Dating 101: what to wear on a date

Dating and meeting new people are by no means all about looks and what you wear. However, not only will investing a little time in what you wear on a date make you look good, it will also make you feel good and put a positive spring in your step.

Firstly, when pondering your outfit for a first date it’s worth keeping in mind that it’s always best to be on the smarter, slightly over-dressed side rather than under dressed. Presenting yourself well is worth it. If you turn up looking like you've just rolled out of bed, you're not likely to make a great first impression. And first impressions count.

Here are some wardrobe pointers when deciding on what to wear on a first date:

Set the scene
One of the most important considerations to keep in mind when selecting an outfit for a date is, where are you going, what will you be doing and what are others there likely to be wearing. It is also worthwhile seeing if there’s a dress code for the venue. You can usually find this on the website for the place or by giving them a quick call. A successful date will come from you feeling comfortable, so it’s important you don’t look, or feel, out of place. For example, you don’t want to wear a suit to a casual, laid-back dinner spot. Or, don running shoes to a fancy restaurant or bar. Fitting in with your surroundings will make you feel comfortable and allow you to relax. Don’t make things more nerve-wracking than they already are.

Confidence-boosting ensembles
You’d be surprised just how powerful clothes can be in making you feel great. So opt for something you feel good in, as your outfit will impact how confident and natural you feel as well as your comfort levels while on a date. And this works both ways – you’ll want to ensure everything you opt for fits you well and isn’t uncomfortable. New shoes will give you blisters, a top a size too small will make you feel squeezed in, a woollen jumper could overheat your body – all of these things will show in your body language and mood. It’s a good idea to select something that you've worn before and you know makes you feel fantastic as well as attractive.

Finishing touches
The little finishing touches – like an accessory, a splash of perfume and looking fresh – are not be underestimated. If you’ve had a busy day and you’re going straight from one place to a date, take the time to freshen up – use deodorant, have a breath mint, spritz on a scent and tidy up your hair and outfit. Looking fresh and crisp will help impress your date, but furthermore, feeling fresh will energise you.

Images: Getty

Office worker sent home for “distracting” outfit

An office worker has claimed she was sent home from work for wearing a “distracting” dress.

US woman Marie Dee wore a black figure-hugging dress with a high neckline to her office on a standard work day, but a human resources employee allegedly deemed her outfit inappropriate.

The mother-of-two secretly filmed herself being confronted by the “HR girl” who dubbed her dress “way too revealing and distracting” for the office.

“Guys it happened again, I’m getting sent home for my outfit,” Marie said in the viral TikTok video.

“This is getting ridiculous.”

The footage shows Marie walking over to the HR employee’s office to ask what was wrong with her outfit.

“I’m sorry you still can’t wear that. It’s way too revealing and distracting,” the HR woman can be heard saying.

Confused, Marie responded, “It’s distracting?” to which the HR staff member replied, “Very.”

The video has been viewed more than 20 million times, with thousands of commenters jumping to Marie’s defence.

“I’m an HR leader and I think your outfit is professional and polished,” one said.

Another wrote, “You look very professional, I think the HR girl is a bit jealous that you are so beautiful.”

One suggested, “I’m an HR manager and I would wear that myself!”

Another added, “You look great and very professional... I don’t understand. There’s nothing wrong with that.”

Another person said, “HR seems to be overstepping here. I don’t think anything is wrong here.”

"I broke down": Emma Watkins opens up on emotional meaning behind latest outfit

While spotting celebrities in gorgeous gowns isn’t unusual, Emma Watkins’ latest appearance in a pink and gold dress has more meaning than it seems.

The former yellow Wiggle revealed that the frock was designed with a particular person in mind, which she wore as an ambassador for Frocktober.

"The dress that I'm wearing isn't just a pretty dress. [It was] actually created by a beautiful designer, Jaimie Sortino, and it's in honour of his cousin Jenna that passed away,” she told 9Honey.

Jenna Crierie was 33 and eleven years into her battle with ovarian cancer, the most lethal gynaecological cancer, when she passed away.

"I never actually had a chance to meet her, but I've met Jaimie a few times, that's why those pictures and the dress are quite special," Watkins said.

"It really is another reminder of the lives that we've lost due to this disease… even though half of us didn't actually get to meet her, it felt like she was there."

Endometriosis, a condition which affects one in nine Australian women including Watkins, is among the known risk factors for ovarian cancer, though there are no early detection tests.

Watkins recalled how she was brought to tears when she met Leanne Flynn, one of millions of women who had ovarian cancer that was caught too late, for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation’s Frocktober campaign.

"She was telling her story about what she's been going through for the last five years, the multiple surgeries and tests. I basically just cried," Watkins said.

"I broke down in front of the audience, I wasn't expecting to hear such a poignant and connected story to do with the disease itself. Ever since then, I've been highly involved."

As a Frocktober ambassador this year, Watkins is fighting to ensure that experiences like Crierie’s and Flynn’s are no longer as common.

Even pap smears can’t catch ovarian cancer early, which the 33-year-old said said frustrated her.

"That's why it's frustrating, because normally women don't get to pick this up early on. That's the issue," she continued.

"When I found that something wasn't right with me, I was already stage four endometriosis. And the same thing with Flynn, you're just too far along."

With vague symptoms - think abdominal and pelvic pain, boating, appetite loss, unexplained weight changes and tiredness - and nowhere near the same publicity as diseases such as breast cancer, it can be hard for women to find out before it’s too late.

"I think women should be more cautious," Watkins said.

"Even for endometriosis, that wouldn't have been picked up with a pap smear."

While it might be too late for women who have been diagnosed with late stage cancer, Watkins hopes that campaigns like Frocktober can spark change in the years to come.

Images: @emmawatkinsofficial (Instagram)

Why Harry didn't end up wearing military outfit to Queen’s funeral

Prince Harry’s uniform has been the subject of heated discussion following the death of his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II.

The former working royal first made headlines after he was spotted in a suit during royal events where Prince Andrew was wearing his military uniform.

Despite his father, King Charles III, giving Prince Harry permission to wear his dress uniform at Queen Elizabeth II’s vigil over the weekend, the 38-year-old arrived at Westminster Hall in his morning suit during Monday morning’s service.

The prince added his medals to his black suit jacket which he wore while walking in the procession to and from Westminster Abbey during the funeral.

But he wasn’t the only one not in uniform, after Prince Andrew was also prohibited from wearing official military dress during the service.

The changes to uniform permissions came after the palace announced that only working members of the royal family who hold a rank could wear military uniforms at the funeral, with both Prince Harry and Prince Andrew being excluded from that category after leaving royal life.

A source told Page Six last week that Prince Harry was just “prepared to wear whatever his grandmother made plans for”.

“He’s focused on honouring her and that’s it,” they said.

In a statement, the prince said what he wore wasn’t reflective of his military service.

“Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex will wear a morning suit throughout events honouring his grandmother. His decade of military service is not determined by the uniform he wears and we respectfully ask that focus remain on the life and legacy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.”

During the funeral, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were seated in the second row behind King Charles III and Camilla, the Queen Consort.

Meghan was spotted wearing a touching tribute to her grandmother-in-law, donning pearl earrings the Queen gave her in 2018.

After the service, the couple walked behind the Queen’s coffin, with Prince Harry joining male family members for a procession through London streets ahead of her burial at Windsor Castle.

Image: Getty Images

“Keep doing you”: Kyrgios goes head to head with reporter

After cinching a five-set win against Brandon Nakashima, Aussie tennis star Nick Kyrgios shut down a reporter’s attempts to stir up controversy.

During his post-match press conference, one reporter targeted Kyrgios’ wardrobe choices - namely the red Jordans and matching cap he wore for his fourth round clash against Nakashima - but the athlete was having none of it.

Referring to Wimbledon’s dress code rules - where players are required to wear almost entirely white while on the court - the reporter questioned why Kyrgios made such bold outfit choices in light of previous comments he made about controversy seeming to “materialise around” him.

“Because I do what I want,” Kyrgios said.

“So you’re above the rules?” the reporter hit back.

“No. I’m not above the rules,” the 27-year-old answered.

“So what is it? They don’t apply to you?” the reporter asked.

“I just like my Jordans.”

“Keep doing you then champion”: the way Kyrgios fails to get riled up by this line of questioning is a delight to watch pic.twitter.com/M6u6T94Wu0

— Gavin Coote (@GavinCoote) July 4, 2022

Though Kyrgios wasn’t biting, the reporter kept trying to bait the athlete.

“I don’t want to ruin the surprise but the referee’s going to be speaking to you about (his uniform),” the reporter said.

“That’s OK. I’ll wear triple whites tomorrow,” Kyrgios said.

“But that’s fine then. No one else, in both draws, wear …” the reporter began, with Kyrgios interjecting: “But no one else - even after Wimbledon - no one else really walks with Jordans on the court.”

When the moderator tried to interject, the reporter apologised, saying that Kyrgios “just moaned about the controversy that surrounds him”.

“I haven’t moaned. I love it.” Kyrgios said.

“So you just laugh it off then?” the reporter asked.

“Yeah, it’s just more attention for me. What’s that saying? Any publicity is good publicity right?” Kyrgios answered.

“If you say so,” the reporter said, to which Kyrgios replied, “Keep doing you then champion”.

Kyrgios has been the subject of plenty of controversy and criticism, but has said he’s okay with it.

“I just smile,” he said. “It’s so funny. Hilarious. I almost just wake up and read things, I just laugh.

“And I never forget things. Whether it was three, four years ago, I have a massive chip on my shoulder. I sit here now in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon again, and I just know there’s so many people that are so upset.

“None of you know me at all - people love just to have an opinion.”

Image: Getty Images

Marilyn Monroe dress designer weighs in on Kim Kardashian’s Met Gala outfit

The designer who sketched Marilyn Monroe’s original ‘Happy Birthday, Mr President’ dress has weighed in on Kim Kardashion’s choice to re-wear the dress at the Met Gala awards - and his opinion of it is less than glowing.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, 82-year-old costume designer Bob Mackie described Kardashian’s controversial outfit choice as a “big mistake”.

“[Monroe] was a goddess. A crazy goddess, but a goddess,” he told the publication.

"She was just fabulous. Nobody photographs like that. And it was done for her. It was designed for her. Nobody else should be seen in that dress."

Mackie, whose claim to fame includes dressing Lucille Ball, Judy Garland and Cher, sketched the design for Monroe’s gown in 1962.

He then sent the sketch to his boss, French fashion designer Jean Louis, who made the gown a reality.

Kardashian caused a stir after she reached out to Ripley’s ‘Believe It or Not’ museum in Orlando - which famously bought Monroe’s gown for $6.7 million in 2016 - and was allowed to try it in a private fitting.

They then workshopped how she could “fake” fitting into the dress for the 2022 Met Gala, in a move that has caused concern among fashion historians and collectors.

Scott Fortner, a Marilyn Monroe artefact collector, told People that, since the dress was exclusively designed for Monroe and involved her being nude while it was sewn to her body, it can be deduced that some “stress” was done to the dress when Kardashian gave it a try.

“The gown worn by anyone else will not be a precise fit,” Fortner said. “In this case, Kim Kardashian's measurements are somewhat different than Marilyn's. It's logically assumed the fabric and seams were stressed."

Alicia Malone, the Aussie TV host of Turner Classic Movies and the network’s new fashion series Follow the Thread, also told Entertainment Weekly that there’s an issue with Kardashian wearing an item so intrinsically tied to Monroe.

"I don't know what Kim Kardashian sees in Marilyn herself, or how much she knows about her history, but definitely now, Kim will be tied to that dress as Marilyn is," she said.

"So it'll be the Marilyn Monroe dress that Kim Kardashian also wore to the Met Gala."

Images: Getty Images

Where we've seen Diana's statue outfit before

The Princess of Wales will stand forever in the gardens of Kensington Palace, as a sculpture meticulously curated over several years with painstaking detail, which has finally been presented to the world.

Prince William and Prince Harry have been central in the making of their mother’s statue, having commissioned the project in 2017.

Diana’s face, along with the three children depicted with her, "will be seen forever as a symbol of her life and her legacy", her sons said in a joint statement.

The brothers reunited on July 1, in honour of Diana’s 60th birthday, to unveil the statue in the Sunken Garden.

The clothing in the statue is likely to have been inspired by the Princess of Wales' 1993 Christmas card.

In that photo Diana is adorned in a blue collared shirt with a high neck, the buttons undone, a black belt with a large golden buckle and a black pencil skirt.

While it is not confirmed, the statue of Diana bears a striking similarity to the outfit.

The 1993 Christmas card came at a pivotal time in Diana's life, just one year before she separated from Prince Charles.

In 1993 Diana and Charles chose to send out separate Christmas cards – a public display to signify that their marriage had well and truly come to an end.

The royal used the separation to her advantage, however, and carved out a new role for herself by throwing her energy into her charities.

In a statement Kensington Palace said that “the statue aims to reflect the warmth, elegance and energy of Diana, Princess of Wales, in addition to her work and the impact she had on so many people.

"The portrait and style of dress was based on the final period of her life as she gained confidence in her role as an ambassador for humanitarian causes and aims to convey her character and compassion."

Diana is surrounded by three children "who represent the universality and generational impact of The Princess' work".

Prince William and Prince Harry wanted the statue to recognise their mother's positive impact across the world.

Fiery debate erupts over news reporters’ risqué outfit choice

A fiery debate has erupted over a Belgian journalist and a former pro cyclist, when he made a crude comment towards a young female reporter’s clothing choice while covering the Vuelta a San Juan in Argentina.

Former pro cyclist Sven Spoormakers referred to the reporter’s low-cut top after taking a screenshot of her interviewing one of the riders for television, asking in Dutch: “Is it cool in Argentina?”

The young female reporter was working on the Vuelta a San Juan in Argentina.

The response was bitter and fiery after numerous fans and pundits condemned him for allegedly sexually objectifying the young reporter.

Australian journalist Sophie Smith criticised Spoormakers on his remark, writing: “Seriously? Please tell me this is lost in translation and you did not just publicly objectify a young female reporter.

“Speaking from experience, let me say she does the exact same job as you but has to work and withstand twice as much still because of bulls*** like this.”

Spoormakers refused to back down from his controversial statement, however and shot back a fiery response: “Objectify, really? Come on. Don’t draw the feminist card on this one. Or calling it a disgrace.”

Smith then incredulously hit back: “So it’s her fault because you can’t stop looking at her boobs?

Sven Spoormakers competing in the Amstel Curacao Race 2010.

“What’s she meant to do, wear a potato sack so you don’t get excited?

“If I take a picture of you at work, post it and comment on how small your d**k looks in a pair of shorts would you be all right with that?”

British reporter Ned Boulting added his opinion to the conversation to lend his support, quoting one of Smith’s tweets and writing: “Over and over and over again, my female colleagues have to defend themselves from institutional disrespect.

“I take your voice, Sophie, and I add mine.”

Spoormakers’ tweets were also taken by upset fans, with one writing: “Mate, she’s wearing a top. That’s it. What’s the problem? Jesus Christ you’re a dinosaur.”

Another added: “She isn’t exposed in any way Sven. You commented inappropriately as if her body is available for you to simply discuss. That’s objectifying her. Not cool.”

While another person on social media added: “Absolutely frustrating. @SvenSpoormakers your comment is inappropriate.

“We are more than the clothes we wear. If you can’t understand why your comment is inappropriate I suggest getting some training around sexism.”

How the Queen conveys messages through her eclectic outfits

The Royal Family often use their wardrobes and fashion choices to reflect a statement, or even share messages without having to say anything.

It is a move flagrantly used by the Duchess of Cambridge and Sussex, who usually go out of their way to wear local designers and emblems when they are on royal tours overseas.

However it is not just the younger royals who use their wardrobes to convey a message as the Queen has used her brooches, hats and other accessories to make a statement for decades.

On Wednesday, Her Majesty wore a striking purple coat and dress with a matching hat while visiting the Royal British Legion Industries Village in Kent.

It is one of a series of events the Royal Family will be attending in commemoration of Remembrance Day.

Along with the stylish outfit, the royal wore a shining amethyst brooch that once belonged to Queen Victoria’s mother.

HELLO! magazine noted the brooch can be interpreted as a gesture of comfort for the veterans, and the gem in general is viewed as a stone for alleviating sadness and grief during a period of mourning.

It is also a stone perceived to be one of peace, with a calming presence, and even protection against harm.

However, it could just be possible the Queen enjoyed the colour of the brooch as she is one for colour coordinating.

The most senior royal has worn the brooch previously for military-related occasions, including a visit to the Poppy Factory and a Walking with the Wounded reception.

Royal sleuths love to consider the statements the Queen is making by what accessories she wears, and the speculation rammed up when the US President visited the UK.

It did not go unnoticed that the day Donald Trump landed in the UK, the monarch sported a brooch that had been given to her by former president Barack Obama.

It is nicknamed the American State Visit Brooch, and was hand selected by the Obamas to give to Queen Elizabeth during their State Visit to the UK in 2011.

While the royal did opt for a different accessory when she officially met with Trump, royal watchers were convinced that Obama’s gift was a deliberate choice.

On the second day of the president's visit, she wore a Sapphire Jubilee Brooch - a gift from Canada.

Scroll through the gallery above to see the Queen’s brooches that royal watchers say are a “message.”

Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan’s royal tour in South Africa has already reached well past its halfway mark and it is clear she didn’t leave her beloved style game back at Frogmore cottage.

This trip is the first one the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have taken with their four-month-old son, Archie.

However, seeing the adorable bub isn’t the only thing that has made headlines all across the world.

For her first solo outing of her and Prince Harry’s tour, the royal opted for a plain black jumpsuit which she had previously worn while filming the Forces for Change video published to the @Sussexroyal Instagram account. To glam up the look, she added gold statement earrings and black Manolo Blahnik pumps.

One of the most memorable outfits from the Duchess has got to be the daring blue printed frock she wore while toting around her gorgeous son Archie in front of the cameras, for the first time ever.

While meeting with Archbishop Desmond Tutu and his daughter at their legacy foundation in Cape Town, the royal looked fresh and at ease in an ultra-chic blue-printed Club Monaco silk dress with a dainty tie waist and navy blue pumps.

Another look sported by the 37-year-old mother was one many Aussies and Kiwi’s might remember, as she first showed it off while travelling through the South Pacific for a royal tour.

It was a favourite among many - a striped maxi dress by Martin Grant, accessorised with black porcelain earrings, which were designed and created by local South African jeweller Nina Bosch.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have just one more day left, where they will visit a township near Johannesburg and meet young people and entrepreneurs who are working to tackle the rising unemployment challenge in South Africa.

The couple will also take the opportunity to meet with Mrs Graça Machel, widow of the late former President Nelson Mandela.

Scroll through the gallery above to see all of Duchess Meghan’s gorgeous looks while on tour in South Africa.
