“Goodbye Little Darlin’”: Johnny Cash fan snaps up singer’s former home

After just two months on the market, the sprawling ranch Johnny Cash built in the hills of California has been snagged by a generous local fan.

With an asking price of $US 1.795 million ($NZ 3.16 million), the home’s new owner paid an extra $55,000 ($NZ 96,000) for the keys to the six-acre ranch.

The Ring of Fire singer reportedly built the ‘60s style compound in Ventura, California, in 1961 as an escape from Los Angeles and a place where he and his wife, Vivian, could raise their two daughters.

Unlike other celebrity neighbours, it seems that Cash was on friendly terms with the locals, with residents from the nearby village of Casitas Springs recalling Cash setting up speakers on the hillside outside his home and playing concerts for the people living below, per realtor.com.

In 1966, the couple divorced, with Cash marrying June Carter two years later and relocating to Nashville.

Vivian later offloaded the five-bedroom home in the 1970s.

Even after all these years, the property still features details from when Cash called it home, including a wall-mounted timetable and painted ceilings “imbued with glitter”, according to the listing.

His wood-panelled studio has also been preserved. Built with high windows, the studio was designed so the six-foot singer could look out without others being able to see in.

The panelled walls, wagon wheel chandeliers and curved brick fireplace in the living room also add to the rustic feel of the home’s interior.

Outside, you’ll find cypresses and oak trees, a large pool and spa, and a hillside barbecue area where Cash taught his daughters to shoot - with spent shells still being found there sometimes.

With the property being zoned for livestock and plenty of fields ready for planting, it’ll be up to the new owner to decide on the fate of the iconic home.

Images: Realtor.com / Getty Images

“You feel free”: Meghan Markle opens up on life in her new home

After leaving royal life for the celebrity haven of Montecito, California, two years ago, Meghan Markle has revealed that her new home has brought with it freedom, tranquillity and peace of mind.

Meghan and her husband, Prince Harry, bought the nine-bedroom, 16-bathroom home for a hefty $US 14.65 million ($NZ 24.3 million) in 2020, becoming neighbours with the likes of Oprah Winfrey and Ellen DeGeneres.

In an interview for The Cut, the 41-year-old Suits star detailed how her California home is “healing” and allows her to “feel free”, feelings that pushed her and Harry to snap it up when they could.

“We did everything we could to get this house,” she told writer Allison P. Davis. “Because you walk in and go … Joy. And exhale. And calm. It’s healing. You feel free.”

The couple bought the home - which comes complete with rose gardens, a tennis court, a tea house, and a two-bedroom guesthouse - shortly after leaving the royal family.

The 1700 square-metre home is reportedly the first both Harry and Meghan have owned, with the pair now embarking on renovations including the fixing of pipes.

With Harry and Meghan working on various projects through their company Archewell, they share a home office which includes two plush club chairs side-by-side in front of a desk.

In the sitting room, cozy chairs and rosewater candles are included along with a grand piano, gifted to the couple by actor and director Tyler Perry as a housewarming present after they spent the pandemic living in his multimillion-dollar mansion in Beverly Hills.

But, the couple initially resisted viewing the home when they were looking to establish themselves in the area, with Meghan revealing that it wasn’t within their means initially.

“We didn’t have jobs, so we just were not going to come and see this house. It wasn’t possible,” Meghan said.

When they did finally take a tour of the house, she said they had only seen the grounds when they told the realtor they had to have it.

“One of the first things my husband saw when we walked around the house was those two palm trees,” Meghan recalled.

“He goes, ‘My love, it’s us’.”

Image: @CampbellAddy (The Cut / Twitter)

Beloved US musician and his wife found dead on desert road

A beloved US musician and his wife have been found dead near California under mysterious circumstances.

Larry Petree and his wife Betty, who had been married for more than 60 years, were found dead on a desert road in a bizarre tragedy, leaving family members wondering what happened.

“When deputies arrived, they found the bodies of an adult male sitting in the driver’s seat and adult female leaning against the rear tire,” the Kern County Sheriff’s Office said.

Criminal activity is not suspected in the case, so homicide detectives didn‘t respond to the scene, while investigators added that it appeared the couple had run out of petrol.

It is unclear where the couple were heading, and an official cause of death has yet to be revealed.

Larry was known for his musical talents and played the pedal steel guitar, contributing to the iconic Bakersfield Sound era.

He was playing shows in the area up until his passing, with Larry‘s final show being with a band called The Soda Crackers.

“We had the honour of having Larry as our steel guitarist at our first ever show in Bakersfield and had the even greater honour of playing with him for his last show a few weeks ago,” the band wrote in a Facebook post on Monday.

“We send our condolences to the Petree family and the greater Bakersfield Sound community.”

Larry’s cousin, Laurie Sanders, told The Californian that Larry had been disoriented recently and got lost when attending his own gig.

He failed to show up for the performance, and a family friend had to pick him up and take him to the concert.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s home targetted by intruders

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s California mansion has been the target of intruders twice in just two weeks.

The Sussexes were inside their $14 million mansion in the town of Montecito with their children Archie, three, and Lilibet, one when the alarm went off.

Santa Barbara Police arrived at the home on May 19 at 5:44pm following reports of a trespasser.

Then 12 days later on May 31 at 3.21pm, the alarm was once again triggered, just hours before the Sussexes were due to leave for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Police attended the home once again and reported the incidents as trespassing, property crimes and “suspicious circumstances” by police.

Their mansion has been broken into a total of six times in 14 months.

It comes as Prince Harry won a case to sue the Home Office who cut his police protection after he left the Royal Family.

Shaeed Fatima QC, who is representing Harry in court, said the Prince believes the Queen’s private secretary, Sir Edward Young “should not have been involved” in the decision.

The couple have had to hire ex-President Barack Obama's former bodyguard Christopher Sanchez and Michael Jackson's former security chief Alberto Alvarez to keep them safe.

Images: Getty/Sotheby's International Realty

How Meghan Markle earned her new nickname

Meghan Markle has been given a new nickname thanks to her behaviour in California.

The Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry have been living in the American state after leaving the British Monarch.

And Meghan seems to be making an impression on the locals that she has been dubbed “Princess of Montecito” because of her bizarre requests.

“If she’s going into Beverly Hills or West Hollywood for lunch or dinner, she’ll generally call ahead and request a table that is completely secluded,” a source told the UK’s Closer magazine.

The source alleges that Meghan’s favourite restaurants aren’t well known but when she goes to high-end places, she ensures the place is perfect for her arrival.

“But, generally speaking, these days she likes higher-end hangouts like Cecconi’s, Sunset Tower, Sugarfish or Lucky’s steakhouse in Montecito, which was recommended by Oprah,” the magazine reported.

“It’s become their favourite, and they’re waited on hand and foot.”

Montecito is best known to host some of the most popular celebrities including Oprah, Ellen DeGeneres and Serena Williams.

The source said that Meghan spend quite a bit of time with Oprah where they talk about her future, issues in the UK, and Harry.

It comes as Harry and Meghan were seen leaving Oprah’s house in June with rumours swirling that another tell-all interview is on the way.

Harry appears to be content with his life in California as he wakes up to feed the kids and drive his wife to meetings before coming back, the source alleges.

But questions are swirling on how much longer he would be comfortable with the lifestyle.

“With all this speculation around her political career ambitions, everyone thinks Harry would be happy at the idea of being first gentleman if she accomplishes her long-term goal,” the source continued.

“Having said that, he might be fine with it right now — but you have to wonder for how much longer.”

Image: Getty

"Walk the rooms": Inside the house that Johnny Cash built

Johnny Cash's former home has hit the market, with the California property expected to sell for up to $1.8 million.

Cash, who passed away in 2003 at the age of 71, shared the property with his first wife, Vivian Liberto, and the home is adorned with the relics of Johnny's love for music.

The house features a wood-panelled recording studio, wall-mounted turn tables and a country motif living room.

The artist reportedly built the 4,500 sq. ft. home in Casitas Springs, California, back in 1961 as an escape from his demanding lifestyle.

Johnny and Vivian, along with their three daughters, spent six years in the homestead retreat, which was rumoured to be built to Cash's exact wishes.

According to the listing agents of Douglas Elliman, "Johnny bought the land and built the house to his exact specifications, walking the rooms and deciding on exact placement and layout. He created a secluded sanctuary, unique to this rural small-town enclave. Longtime locals recount stories of Johnny setting up speakers on the hillside outside the house and playing concerts for the townspeople down below."

Inside the five bedroom home, most rooms remain original to Johnny and Vivian's vision, with painted ceilings featuring a touch of glitter, an original wall-mounted turntable and intercom system, and curved brick fireplace in the family room.

Despite a modern uplift in the his and hers suites, the property is undeniably Cash's with custom wood built-ins, exposed brick walls, natural wooden beams and a country motif living room.

The grounds are equally mesmerizing with live oaks, verdant gardens, a sparkling swimming pool, and corrals and fields ready for horses, pigs, goats, chickens or other rural uses.

225kg "Hank the Tank" bear ransacks wealthy neighbourhood

Residents of a wealthy California neighbourhood have been terrorised by a 225kg black bear, nicknamed Hank the Tank by authorities.

According to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) , the one bear has been linked to "property damage at 38 different properties" in the affluent Tahoe Keys neighbourhood.

The trouble-making bear has been the source of more than 150 calls between law enforcement and wildlife personnel in recent months.

Peter Tira, a spokesperson for the CDFW said Hank has been spotted more and more as he has developed a taste for pizza, and has yet to be deterred by efforts from local police to scare it off with paintballs and sirens.

“It’s easier to find leftover pizza than to go in the forest,” Tira said

“This is a bear that has lost all fear of people,” he added. “It’s a potentially dangerous situation.”

Due to the heightened number of sightings and complaints about Hank, the CDFW has been setting up traps to catch the beast, but to no avail.

“The trapping activity is a measure of last resort to capture and euthanise a specific and what we call a severely habituated or human-food conditioned black bear,” Tira said.

Despite the potential danger, the bear hunt has sparked an outcry from local residents, who tried to sabotage them by trying to scare away the bear, playing loud music, and even spray-painting “Bear Killer” on the government’s trap.

A bear activist group called the BEAR League has been coordinating with the CDFW for Hank the Tank to be relocated to a wildlife sanctuary instead of euthanised.

“The BEAR League reached out to the director of an excellent out-of-state wildlife sanctuary who agreed he has room and would be very willing to give this bear a permanent home,” said executive director Ann Bryant.

“We notified [the California Department of Fish and Wildlife] on Tuesday morning asking that this option be seriously considered rather than killing the bear.”

While talks to relocate Hank are still ongoing, the CDFW has urged residents to practice preventive measures to keep bears out, such as securing garbage properly and keeping trash out of cars.

According to the New York Post, when people relocated to Tahoe Keys to work from home due to the pandemic, these new residents did not adhere to preventive measures, prompting Hank the Tank to come out of the woods and forage for food.

Image credits: Facebook - BEAR League

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry rumoured to be selling their California mansion

Rumours have emerged that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may be attempting to offload their regal home in Montecito, California, and purchase another in the area.

The couple purchased the home just 18 months ago for $USD 14.65 million, and several months after images emerged of the home from a previous listing.

While some may wonder whether there was something wrong with their nine-bedroom, 16-bath Mediterranean mansion, real estate agent Jill Nelsen of The Agency in Montecito and Santa Barbara has shot those claims down.

“To be clear, there is absolutely nothing ‘wrong’ with the lovely estate Harry and Meghan purchased,” she said.

“It’s located within a beautiful, hedged, and stonewalled enclave in the heart of Montecito. Like many properties in town, most buyers would choose to update the interiors with new finishes and technology, as the couple has reportedly chosen to do.”

Instead, many royal fans believe the area may not be quite private enough for them.

Though their property is gated, the community it is located in isn’t, meaning that they could be followed right up to their home.

Information obtained by the British PA news agency under the Freedom of Information laws has found that police were called to the Sussexes residences nine times over nine months, as reported by Realtor.com.

These included two incidents on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day in 2020, when a trespasser identified as Nikolas Brooks drove 3700 kilometres from Ohio to pay the couple an unwanted visit. He was arrested during his second attempted visit.

“This must be terribly disconcerting for Harry, who grew up in the royal family in a very controlled environment,” said Peter Lorimer, the vice president of Corcoran Global Living, Beverly Hills, and a former London resident.

“Living in a home of that size, an intruder could enter and be undetected for some time.”

As for where the couple may move to next, Lorimer suspects they won’t have any trouble finding a new place to call home and that they may have access to properties that aren’t for sale to the general public.

“I imagine people who might not have thought seriously about selling might entertain the thought and open their homes in hopes that the prince will come for tea,” he said, laughing.

Image: @archewell_hm (Instagram) / Zillow

Hero jogger rescues family pets from burning home

Image: Youtube

A good Samaritan has been caught on a California home's Ring security camera rescuing a cat, a rabbit and two dogs from a stranger's house.

The hero, who has since been identified as Paul Murphy, was jogging past on the street when he saw smoke surrounding the family home.

The homeowners, who were not home at the time, had no idea what was happening nor that their four pets were in danger until Murphy contacted them through their Ring surveillance camera.

Courtney Polito, one of the homeowners, said she saw Murphy "running back and forth" on their porch.

"So I answered it and he said, 'Hello, do you see there's smoke coming out of the top of your house?'" Polito said.

Polito proceeded to share the home access code with Murphy as smoke alarms started going off.

Murphy then ran in and out of the house to save the Politos' four pets. Had Murphy not helped when he did, the family would have lost everything.

"The fire department said 10 more minutes and the house would have been gone," Polito said.

Polito's husband, Tony, also told the outlet that to enter a stranger's house when it's on fire to rescue pets "takes a certain type of person."

Murphy was able to get out of the house by the time firefighters arrived to extinguish the fire, but it's unclear what Murphy did in the meantime with the animals.

Courtney Polito said she is looking forward to showing Murphy how grateful she and her family are for his help, and is looking forward to giving him "a hug.

Bear breaks into people’s home to steal their KFC

A man in California was in for quite a surprise when he arrived home to a bear in his kitchen. Not just that, but the bear was helping itself to his KFC!

Sierra Madre resident John Holden found the bear in his kitchen, and said there was at least one other bear in the house and a third outside. He told ABC7, "I've had a lot of other encounters with them. I've actually had them bump into me a couple times in the backyard, but definitely never in the house like that.”

He said that the bears made a mess of his house, and he finally got them to leave by making loud noises. Despite that, they simply retreated to his backyard, lazing around after what was obviously a filling meal.

The Californian city of Sierra Madre is in Los Angeles County, in the foothills of the San Gabriel Valley, below the southern edge of the Angeles National Forest. What that means is that bear sightings aren’t particularly uncommon, although catching them eating KFC certainly remains a rare occurrence.

Just last week, a bear wandered around the grounds of an elementary school in San Dimas, before making itself comfortable in a tree at a nearby home. That bear was tranquilised, caught, and released into the wild. A cub was also spotted near the elementary school, but its whereabouts are unknown. Wildlife officials believe the adult was a mother bear looking for the cub.

Black bears are the only species of bear native to California, but they come in a number of colours, ranging from solid black to shades of brown. The last California grizzly bear, the bear found on the Californian state flag, was seen in 1924.

Heroic mum fights off mountain lion with her bare hands

A mother in California is being hailed a hero after fighting off a dangerous mountain lion that attacked her son.

The woman used her bare hands to fend off the animal after it lunged at her five-year-old son and dragged him along the front lawn of his home.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife said the boy was playing near his house, west of Los Angeles, when the mountain lion attacked.

After the mother heard the boy's screams, her protective instincts kicked in and she rushed to the rescue.

"She ran out of the house and started punching and striking the mountain lion with her bare hands and got him off her son," Department spokesman Patrick Foy told the Associated Press.

"The true hero of this story is his mom because she absolutely saved her son’s life."

Once the boy was free from the jaws of the mountain lion, he was immediately taken to the hospital where law enforcement were notified of the attack.

Mr Foy shared that the five-year-old boy had sustained traumatic injuries to his head and torso.

Authorities also confirmed that following the attack, the mountain lion has been shot and killed by a wildlife officer.

The officer was sent to the scene shortly after the attack, arriving to find the mountain lion crouching in the bushes with its “ears back and hissing” at him.

“Due to its behaviour and proximity to the attack, the warden believed it was likely the attacking lion and to protect public safety shot and killed it on site,” the wildlife department said in a statement Saturday.
