Cause of death revealed for "Yacht Rock" legend Jimmy Buffett

Iconic American singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett, renowned for his timeless 1977 hit "Margaritaville," has passed away at the age of 76.

In a heartfelt statement posted on his official website, Buffett's family shared the news of his peaceful passing on the night of September 1st, surrounded by his loved ones, music and faithful canine companions.

The statement poignantly expressed, "He lived his life like a song until the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many."

Recent reports have disclosed that the Yacht Rock icon lost his battle with skin cancer. The announcement of his demise came via his website, while sources close to the artist confirmed the cause of death to TMZ.

Tragically, what initially began as a diagnosis of skin cancer ultimately developed into lymphoma. A source divulged, "He lived his life in the sun, literally and figuratively."

Buffett entered hospice care the previous Monday, and in his final weeks, he was fortunate to receive a visit from none other than Paul McCartney. Despite his illness, he continued to tour for many years, but concerns about his health arose when he had to postpone concerts in May following a hospitalisation.

Jimmy Buffett, epitomising the laid-back "beach bum" culture, held a special place in the hearts of his fans. His journey to stardom began rather humbly, as he was relatively unknown until he penned the iconic hit "Margaritaville" in 1977, which became an anthem for those seeking a carefree, low-key life. This song played a pivotal role in the yacht rock movement, becoming a symbol of a particular state of mind.

Buffett once shared, "There was no such place as Margaritaville. It was a made-up place in my mind, basically made up about my experiences in Key West and having to leave Key West and go on the road to work and then come back and spend time by the beach."

Expanding the Margaritaville brand worldwide, Buffett ventured into restaurants, authored books, and even ventured into the world of cruise lines. His diverse investments ultimately made him one of the wealthiest musicians globally, with an estimated net worth of $1 billion.

Buffett embarked on his music career as a country artist in 1970 with the release of "Down To Earth." Initially, he earned his living as a busker, and while the album didn't make a significant impact, a fateful busking tour with fellow country artist Jerry Jeff Walker in Key West birthed his easygoing "beach bum" persona. Buffett skilfully fused elements of country, rock, calypso, and pop to craft his signature tropical sound.

Buffett's artistic output was prolific, with 29 studio albums released up until 2020. However, it was his diverse business ventures that proved to be most lucrative. In 1993, he launched his own record label, followed by his beer company in 2006, the Margaritaville Casino in 2013, the Margaritaville online game in 2012, and the Margaritaville retirement village in 2021. In 2018, Buffett even introduced the Coral Reefer marijuana brand.

A legendary musician and astute businessman, Buffett serves as an enduring testament that a career in music can follow a multitude of paths. His signature tune, "Margaritaville," was rightfully inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2016, immortalising its cultural and historical significance as the quintessential sound of Key West, Florida and countless unforgettable karaoke nights.

Images: Instagram

iPad-controlled superyacht hits the market for $22 million

Looking for an addition to your vehicle collection? This might be up your alley – a $22 million superyacht, which can be controlled by an iPad, just hit the market.

Created by John Shuttleworth, the 140-foot (42.5 metre) Adastra has won numerous design awards thanks to its environmentally friendly construction. This is due to the design that allows only 20 per cent of the lightweight glass and carbon boat to be submerged in the water, reducing drag and improving efficiency.

“Inevitably, there has to be a trend for reducing fuel consumption – and I think superyachts will have to look something like this in the future,” Shuttleworth told CNN in 2013.

The yacht boasts five bedrooms, four bathrooms and an open-air bar, and can be controlled by an iPad from up to 50 metres away. $1 billion mega-yacht with 2 pools and 2 helipads

The Admiral X Force 145 would not be your everyday mega-yacht. The 465-foot concept vessel takes luxury to eye-popping new heights.

Not only is the yet-to-be-built boat huge, its lavish interiors would be punctuated by crystal chandeliers and solid marble floors.

Two pools, two movie theatres, two helipads, a garage, multiple gym facilities, and a bi-level pool area merely scratch the surface of what this incredible boat will offer.

Though the price is only available on request, The Daily Mail estimates it will cost over $US1 billion (NZ $1.5b).

Would that make it the world's most expensive yacht? Only if it gets built before spring 2018, when 4Yacht's Triple Deuce, a 722-foot leviathan, is set to be completed.

The Italian Sea Group project was dreamed up by Dobroserdov Design in a partnership with Admiral Centro Stile. They provided us an artist's rendering of what the ship will look like when it's commissioned and completed.

Written by Dennis Green. Wild Oats XI owner Bob Oatley has died

Businessman, winemaker and yachtsman Bob Oatley has died of illness, aged 87, on Sunday morning.

Wild Oates XI won the iconic Sydney to Hobart race for the eighth time in 10 years in 2014, but had to pull out of the Boxing Day race last month due to damage to the mainsail caused in bad weather.

Forbes magazine last year estimated Oatley's net worth to be A$910 million ($967m), while he was listed at number 49 on last year's BRW Rich List, with an estimated wealth of A$1 billion ($1.06b).

While yachting is where he made his name, it was in wine that he made his fortune, via the Rosemount Estates wine company. Oatley sold Rosemount wines for an extraordinary A$1.4 billion ($1.49b) in 2001 to Treasury Wine Estates, after building it up as a private company over three decades from meagre Hunter Valley beginnings in 1969.

In 2003, he purchased the iconic Hamilton Island in the Whitsundays in Queensland, where he hosted the annual race week. He also owned retirement homes and a clifftop villa in Sardinia.

He more recently owned the boutique label Robert Oatley Vineyards.

His ancestor, James Oatley, was Australia's first clockmaker, according to Forbes magazine.

Oatley is survived by his wife and three children.

First appeared on Stuff.co.nz.

Related Links:

8 reasons why dogs are the bee’s knees

10 signs your pet is sick

11 ways cats are like “psychopaths”
