King Charles shares unseen snap of Princess Kate on her birthday

Extraordinary snaps from around the world for the Nature Photographer of the Year awards

<p>Every year, the <a href="https://naturephotographeroftheyear.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nature Photographer of the Year</a> awards showcase the best that Mother Nature has to offer. </p> <p>For the 2023 competition, photographers from all around the world have captured beautiful snaps of wildlife in their natural habitat, picturesque landscapes and much more. </p> <p>The annual competition is an initiative of Nature Talks, the organisation responsible for the Nature Talks Photo Festival that takes place in the Netherlands. </p> <p>This year, the competition saw entrant from South Africa, Germany, the USA, England, Finland, France, Luxembourg and many more corners of the globe. </p> <p>This year's winner is a photographer hailing from Canada, Jacquie Matechuk, who stole the show with her photo of the Spectacled Bear. </p> <p>Chairman Marco Gaiotti explained why her photo was chosen as the winner, "The Spanish moss hanging from this centuries-old fig tree gives an incredible sense of three-dimensionality while the soft light filtering through the colours highlights the profound connection between species and habitat in this image."</p> <p>"Finally, the pose of this spectacled bear fits perfectly into the texture of the photograph. Crown Princess shares adorable snaps of new baby

<p>Malaysia's Crown Prince Tengku Muhammad Faiz Petra and his wife Crown Princess Sofie Louise Johansson have shared a few adorable snaps of their newborn son. </p> <p>The couple welcomed their first child, a healthy baby boy Johan, on July 17 at the University Science Malaysia Hospital. </p> <p>Just two weeks after his birth, Princess Sofie took to Instagram to share a few snaps from her son's recent Aqiqah - an Islamic tradition performed after a child is born, where they sacrifice an animal and share the meat to the poor as a way of celebrating a new life and expressing their gratitude to Allah for blessing them with a child.</p> <p>"Today we had the Aqiqah for baby Johan," she began the post. </p> <p>"Normally the Aqiqah takes place on either the 7th day or the 14th day after birth." </p> <p>The ceremony was held at the royal palace in Kelantan's capital Kota Bharu.</p> <p>In the photos, baby Johan was pictured sleeping peacefully in a white cot, while in another photo he was resting on a padded stool in a bed surrounded by flowers. </p> <p>In another photo, a family member is pictured giving baby Johan a taste of honey as part of the Aqiqah, as it is believed to reflect the sweetness of the Qur'an. </p> <p>The baby's birth was announced just over a week ago in an official statement released by the Kelantan Sultan Office. </p> <p>"Her Highness and the royal baby are both in good health," the statement read. </p> <p>"HRH the Crown Prince and HH the Crown Princess would like to thank all the employees at [the hospital] who were involved and to all the Kelantanese who prayed for their well-being and the safe delivery of their child."</p> <p>The Crown Prince and Princess wedded in a lavish ceremony attended by over 300 people in 2019. </p> <p>They first met each other in England, when the Crown Prince was studying history at the London School of Economics and Political Science and University College London. </p> <p>The Crown Princess was working as an au pair during that time. </p> <p><em><span style="font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Open Sans', 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;"> Images: Instagram</span></em></p>

Naomi Osaka shares first snaps of newborn daughter

<p dir="ltr">Tennis star Naomi Osaka has shared a few updates for the first time since <a href="https://www.oversixty.co.nz/lifestyle/family-pets/naomi-osaka-is-a-mum" target="_blank" rel="noopener">giving birth</a>.</p> <p dir="ltr">The 25-year-old could not hide her excitement of being a mum as she took to Instagram to share a snap of her newborn daughter and a few other photos - including a glimpse into her nursery</p> <p dir="ltr">“Well that was a cool little intermission, now back to your regularly scheduled program 🎾✌🏾💕” she captioned the photo.</p> <p dir="ltr">Her newborn baby girl wore a white baby romper embroidered with green and pink tennis rackets and tennis balls.</p> <p dir="ltr">In the second photo she shared another picture of her baby bump with a stunning background view from her Beverly Hills house.</p> <p dir="ltr">She shared a few other snaps including one from her hospital bed, and another of her celebrations at home - complete with pink balloons that spell out “mom” and rose petals adorning the picnic blanket.</p> <p dir="ltr">This is Naomi’s first child with her rapper beau, Cordae, who she’s been in a relationship with since 2019.</p> <p dir="ltr">Fans took to the comments to share their well-wishes to the first time mum.</p> <p dir="ltr">“A Girl Mom. <p dir="ltr">Ellen DeGeneres shared a sweet throwback snap of her August 2008 wedding with Portia de Rossi, to mark a very special milestone for LGBTQIA+ love.</p> <p dir="ltr">The 65-year-old comedian took to Instagram to honour the eight anniversary of the Supreme Court legalising same-sex marriages in the United States.</p> <p dir="ltr">"8 years ago today marks an important moment. <p>Priscilla Presley has shared a rare photo with her granddaughters, celebrating an important family milestone. </p> <p>The widow of Elvis Presley posted the snap on her Instagram account, smiling with her granddaughters Riley Keough and twins Finley and Harper Lockwood.</p> <p>The four women posed as they celebrated the Lockwood's graduation, with Priscilla writing, "Happy Graduation girls! Shamoun, told Judge Lynn Scaduto at a court hearing in Los Angeles in mid-May that "the parties would like to report that they've reached a settlement."</p> <p>"The families are happy," Shamoun told reporters outside court. Social media snaps map the sweep of Japan’s cherry blossom season in unprecedented detail

As a byproduct, it also contains a vast trove of information about the natural world.</p> <p>In a <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0367253023001019#sec0024a">new study published in Flora</a>, we show how social media can be used for “incidental citizen science”. From photos posted to a social site, we mapped countrywide patterns in nature over a decade in relatively fine detail.</p> <p>Our case study was the annual spread of cherry blossom flowering across Japan, where millions of people view the blooming each year in a cultural event called “hanami”. The advent of mobile phones – and social network sites that allow people to <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1574954116302321">upload photos tagged with time and location data</a> – presents a new opportunity to study how Japan’s flowering events are affected by seasonal climate.</p> <h2>Why are flowers useful to understand how nature is being altered by climate change?</h2> <p>Many flowering plants, including the cherry blossoms of Japan (<em>Prunus</em> subgenus <em>Cerasus</em>), require insect pollination. To reproduce, plant flowers bloom at optimal times to receive visits from insects like bees.</p> <p>Temperature is <a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0200549">an important mechanism</a> for plants to trigger this flowering. <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1111/j.1461-0248.2008.01269.x">Previous research</a> has highlighted how climate change may create mismatches in space or time between the blooming of plants and the emergence of pollinating insects.</p> <p><iframe id="rtiQ0" class="tc-infographic-datawrapper" style="border: none;" src="https://datawrapper.dwcdn.net/rtiQ0/2/" width="100%" height="400px" frameborder="0"></iframe></p> <p>It has been difficult for researchers to map the extent of this problem in detail, as its study requires simultaneous data collection over large areas. The use of citizen science images deliberately, or incidentally, uploaded to social network sites enables <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_data">big data</a> solutions.</p> <h2>How did we conduct our study?</h2> <p>We collected images from Japan uploaded to <a href="https://www.flickr.com/">Flickr</a> between 2008 and 2018 that were tagged by users as “cherry blossoms”. We used computer vision techniques to analyse these images, and to provide sets of keywords describing their image content.</p> <p>Next, we automatically filtered out images appearing to contain content that the computer vision algorithms determined didn’t match our targeted cherry blossoms. Upon further searching, we discovered that this “unexpected” seasonal bloom had also been noted in <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-45898333">mainstream media</a> in recent years. Dedicated sites like <a href="https://wildpollinatorcount.com/">Wild Pollinator Count</a> are excellent resources to contribute to the growing knowledge base.</p> <p>The complex issues of climate change are still being mapped. "He’s a very proud dad": Unearthed snap of Michael Schumacher stuns fans

<p>Max Verstappen has shared never been seen photos of Michael Schumacher with the world.</p> <p>The back-to-back Formula 1 world champion is currently preparing to secure a third straight crown for Red Bull in 2023.</p> <p>Before the season begins, F1 fans are being treated to a sneak peek behind the curtain as Netflix’s smash hit <em>Drive to Survive</em> releases its fifth season.</p> <p>Verstappen is heavily featured throughout episode four of the new season, which was released globally on February 24, focusing primarily on former Haas driver Mick Schumacher.</p> <p>The episode, titled <em>Like Father, Like Son?</em>, brings to light the struggles the famous young racer endured before he was let go by the Haas team.</p> <p>However, it's Verstappen who once again steals the show as he shares what it was like to grow up alongside the Schumacher family.</p> <p>Max’s father, Jos, was teammates with Michael at Benetton, with an old interview filmed in the 2000s showing the pair being asked if they would let their kids become F1 drivers.</p> <p>“I think this could be the first time we have an argument if our two would be racing,” says the German.</p> <p>It’s what came next that stole the hearts of many, leaving F1 fans stunned. As Max talks about the relationship between the two families, a clip of Max as a toddler interacting with Michael is played before a never been seen photo flashes on the screen.</p> <p>“We used to go on holidays when we were little together, the two families, and these kind of memories will stay with me,” explains Max, who is now a 35-time race winner in F1.</p> <p>“For both of us to be in F1 is amazing and also for Michael, he’s a very proud dad for sure.”</p> <p>The image shows Michael sitting on a hanging chair with baby Max on one knee and his daughter, Gina-Maria, on the other.</p> <p>Mick was replaced by F1 journeyman Nico Hulkenberg and will have to sit out 2023 as a reserve driver at Mercedes behind Sir Lewis Hamilton and his teammate George Russell.</p> <p><em>Drive to Survive</em> charts Mick’s difficult sophomore season in 2022, including his horror 170mph incident in Saudi Arabia.</p> <p>Mick’s rough year saw him outscored by his teammate, the returning Danish veteran Kevin Magnussen.</p> <p>The Netflix series focuses on Mick’s struggles and the pressure that came with racing under the Schumacher name.</p> <p>“Mick has the lineage of one of the greatest drivers the sport has ever seen,” said F1 journalist Will Buxton.</p> <p>“But it remains to be seen if he has the same character as his dad.”</p> <p>Haas boss Steiner said the Schumacher name was a “blessing and a curse” for Mick.</p> <p>But in characteristically non-nonsense fashion, the famously foul-mouthed team principal says at some point the young German will have “stand up” and be his “own man”.</p> <p>Mick outlines the struggles surrounding pressure on the show, including the admission “dreams don’t always come true”.</p> <p>His dad is one of the most renowned F1 drivers of all time, rising to power in the 90s and going on to dominate the sport by the early 2000s.</p> <p>He raced from 1991 to 2006 and again from 2010 to 2012, a second act of his racing career which became instrumental in setting up the dominant Mercedes team.</p> <p>The German won five world championships with Ferrari and two for Benetton.</p> <p>Schumacher retired in 2012, but a year later, he was involved in a life-changing skiing accident while on the slopes with Mick.</p> <p>He was left in a medically induced coma before being sent home, and no further information has been revealed since the incident.</p> <p>His family, led by his wife Corinna, protect Michael’s privacy and offer him a quiet life.</p> <p>There have only been hints and cryptic rumours about Schumacher’s health, with information being drip-fed by friends and anonymous sources.</p> <p><em>Image credit: Getty/Netflix</em></p>

King Charles’ family friend snaps up historical Sydney mansion

<p dir="ltr">A family friend of King Charles III has snapped up a historical home in Sydney’s lower north shore.</p> <p dir="ltr">Edward Dawson-Damer, the son of the seventh Earl of Portarlington and equerry (a senior attendant) to the Queen Mother, and his wife Joanne Grant paid an eye-watering $9.325 million ($NZ 10.04 million) for the 114-year-old Dalkeith mansion, per <em><a href="https://www.domain.com.au/news/king-charles-friend-buys-9-3-million-cremorne-home-2-1185842/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Domain</a></em>.</p> <p dir="ltr">The Cremorne home was built in 1908 by English wool merchant and Freemasons grand master Frank Whiddon and sits on an almost 1500-square-metre block.</p> <p dir="ltr">In the early 1950s, the property was bought by the Norwegian Church Abroad, becoming the Norwegian Seaman’s Mission and providing community services to Scandinavian seamen until 1978, according to <a href="https://www.domain.com.au/8-bannerman-street-cremorne-nsw-2090-2018035301" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the listing</a>.</p> <p dir="ltr">While steeped in history, their new sandstone home has also undergone major renovations and an extension, which the listing described as “contemporary updates”, including an open-plan layout, modern appliances in the kitchen and an alfresco entertainment area with an in-ground pool and sandstone cabana.</p> <p dir="ltr">The home also boasts a billiard room that was formerly used as a chapel, with stained-glass windows and the original pew featured.</p> <p dir="ltr">Inside, the art-nouveau period features have been maintained, and each of the five bedrooms come with adjoining sunrooms.</p> <p dir="ltr">It comes as an upgrade for Dawson-Damer and Grant, who offloaded their home in Vaucluse for $6.45 million ($NZ 6.94 million) last year.</p> <p><span id="docs-internal-guid-756cc629-7fff-9afa-842a-06546a58e632"></span></p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Images: Domain</em></p>

“Goodbye Little Darlin’”: Johnny Cash fan snaps up singer’s former home

<p dir="ltr">After just two months on the market, the sprawling ranch Johnny Cash built in the hills of California has been snagged by a generous local fan.</p> <p dir="ltr"><a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/property/real-estate/walk-the-rooms-inside-the-house-that-johnny-cash-built" target="_blank" rel="noopener">With an asking price of $US 1.795 million</a> ($NZ 3.16 million), the home’s new owner paid an extra $55,000 ($NZ 96,000) for the keys to the six-acre ranch.</p> <p dir="ltr">The Ring of Fire singer reportedly built the ‘60s style compound in Ventura, California, in 1961 as an escape from Los Angeles and a place where he and his wife, Vivian, could raise their two daughters.</p> <p dir="ltr">Unlike other celebrity neighbours, it seems that Cash was on friendly terms with the locals, with residents from the nearby village of Casitas Springs recalling Cash setting up speakers on the hillside outside his home and playing concerts for the people living below, per <em><a href="https://www.realtor.com/news/celebrity-real-estate/johnny-cash-fan-buys-the-singers-former-ranch-in-ventura/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">realtor.com</a></em>.</p> <p dir="ltr">In 1966, the couple divorced, with Cash marrying June Carter two years later and relocating to Nashville.</p> <p dir="ltr">Vivian later offloaded the five-bedroom home in the 1970s.</p> <p dir="ltr">Even after all these years, the property still features details from when Cash called it home, including a wall-mounted timetable and painted ceilings “imbued with glitter”, according to <a href="https://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/8736-Nye-Rd_Ventura_CA_93001_M13740-10847" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the listing</a>.</p> <p dir="ltr">His wood-panelled studio has also been preserved. Jennifer Aniston snaps up Oprah's estate in star-studded neighbourhood

<p>Jennifer Aniston has joined the likes of fellow A-listers Ariana Grande, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, Ellen DeGeneres and Rob Lowe, forking out AUD$22 million on Oprah Winfrey’s former home.</p> <p>The four-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom Tuscan-style farmhouse sits on 1.03 acres and was just one part of Winfrey’s vast property that she sold to the actor, while selling her other half of the estate to long-time personal trainer and property manager Bon Greene for an impressive $2.3 million.</p> <p>Spanning just over 400 sqm, the 53-year-old Friends star, who also owns a $20.97m Bel Air mansion, purchased the main residence of the estate under a trust around the same time as well.</p> <p>Winfrey quietly purchased the estate in early 2021 for $10.5m, which means she is walking away with a $6.5m profit. <p dir="ltr">Hugh Jackman has snapped up a show stopping penthouse in New York City’s Chelsea neighbourhood, just two months after listing a deluxe triplex in Manhattan.</p> <p dir="ltr">The <em>Greatest Showman</em> star bought the four-bedroom condo for $US 21.12 million ($NZD 33.03 million) after it was initially <a href="https://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/100-11th-Ave-Ph-A_New-York_NY_10011_M91893-97530" target="_blank" rel="noopener">listed</a> late last year for $US 25 million ($NZD 39.1 million), according to the <em><a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/hugh-jackman-buys-new-york-city-penthouse-for-21-125-million-11659973523" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Wall Street Journal</a></em>.</p> <p dir="ltr">The 434-square-metre apartment boasts city and river views through 14 floor-to-ceiling windows, a stainless steel kitchen with a glass breakfast bar, and space for a music room, with a piano already set-up.</p> <p dir="ltr">Each of the bedrooms, tucked away at one end of the apartment, include stunning views, with the main bedroom featuring three exposures with views stretching from the Hudson River to the Empire State Building.</p> <p dir="ltr">When it comes to outdoor spaces, the apartment includes a terrace and loggia on the main floor, as well as a sprawling roof terrace including an outdoor kitchen, several dining and lounge areas and views of the Hudson River.</p> <p><span id="docs-internal-guid-85902c90-7fff-813a-2cf9-1c49e359a1c7"></span></p> <p dir="ltr">Housed at the top of a famed building designed by Jean Nouvel, the condo comes with access to an 70-foot lap pool, a fitness centre with a sauna, concierge services and a full-time doorman.</p> <blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF;
