New photos capture devastating reality of helicopter collision

Warning: This article contains images that some readers may find disturbing.

Four of the survivors of the deadly Gold Coast helicopter collision have released a series of photos that document the immediate aftermath of the tragedy.

New Zealand couples Marle and Edward Swart, and Elmarie and Riaan Steenberg, were on board the descending helicopter that was struck by one just taking off.

The ascending helicopter crashed to the ground, killing four people on board and wounding three other passengers.

On Sunday, the four New Zealand survivors issued a collective statement, sharing how they are still struggling to come to terms with the tragedy.

"We want to express our deepest sympathies and sincere condolences to the injured, deceased, and their families," they said.

"Our hearts are deeply saddened by the loss. This has been traumatic for us as survivors, and we cannot imagine the terrible sadness their families and loved ones must be feeling."

The couples also offered their gratitude to those who helped them, including their "hero" pilot Michael James, bystanders who rushed to their aid and emergency and medical personnel who helped them.

"Their care and heroism changed our lives," the statement said.

"Our pilot, Michael James. You are our hero. You landed the helicopter safely and kept the bystanders and us safe. We are eternally grateful to you."

"Unidentified bystanders who ran to our assistance. The person on the jet ski who was first on the scene and helped us out of the helicopter, the off-duty paramedic who ran to our assistance, the holidaymakers who brought us hats, towels and water, and chairs."

"Every police officer and emergency services personnel both on the scene of the crash and later in the hospital. The staff of Villas de la Mer who helped our children to visit us and kept them safe. There are no words to describe our gratitude."

"Every staff member involved in our care at Robina Public Hospital. Your discretion and compassionate care during our stay brought us much comfort. We will always remember your kindness."

"Our community in New Zealand for all their well wishes and messages of comfort.

"Our dear family and friends in Australia who have supported us over this period. We appreciate you so very much."

"Craig and the staff of Sea World Helicopters for their support. We also want to express our deep condolences for the loss of pilot Ashley Jenkinson."

"The reality of the last five days' events is sinking in and is a heavy weight to carry," they said.

The four survivors also shared a series of images of their recovery in the hospital, as well as a photo snapped from inside the wreckage of the helicopter.

The four said they would continue to help the Australian Transport Safety Bureau and Queensland Police with their investigation into the incident as needed.

They are headed home to New Zealand, where Elmarie and Marle will continue their lengthy recovery.

Image credits: The Swart and Steenberg families

Expectation vs reality: Reporters share inside look at what cruises are like now

Four reporters have shared their experiences on some of the most popular cruising lines - revealing that their expectations weren’t quite met by the reality of their trip.

For Joey Hadden, who booked her first ever cruise on the Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas, her sessions of relaxing in the sun came with unexpected crowds and difficulties in finding a chair.

“I spent more time waiting in lines than I had anticipated. And I saw much of the world from behind other people's heads,” she wrote of her experience in Insider.

She shared that when she first boarded the ship and excitedly went to watch the ocean as they sailed away from the port, that tall, thick glass and not being able to find a spot to stand stopped her from doing so.

Fellow Insider reporter Monica Humphries said her experience with crowds aboard Carnival Vista, which was at partial capacity during her trip in July 2021, saw her waiting in long lines to disembark at each port and for help from the service desk.

Buffets were another source of contention and crowds for the two reporters, with Humphries also finding that issues with how food was labelled meant she accidentally ate meat twice despite asking what was in her food due to being pescatarian.
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; “This has shattered us”: BBC reality star Jasmine Burkitt has passed away

British reality star Jasmine Burkitt, known as Jazz to her loved ones and friends, has died aged 28.

Burkitt was known for her 2011 documentary, Small Teen, Bigger World, a four-part series on BBC Three where she gave viewers an insight into her life as a teenager with dwarfism.

Her fiancé, Lewis Burke, confirmed the news of her passing on social media earlier this week, per 9Honey.

“She is the most incredible human that ever walked this planet, she is the strongest, funniest, most kindest and purely decent person I’ve ever known,” he wrote on their shared Facebook page.

“I am truly devastated. She changed my life forever and I’ll never be the same.”

Burke, who was in hospital for a heart operation at the time of her passing, said Burkitt had passed away “after a long battle with a serious mental illness”.

According to multiple media outlets, Norman Burkitt, Burkitt’s grandfather, said Burke’s mother found her body in a tent where she and Burke had been living since 2021.

The couple had been documenting their life living in a tent in Bodelwyddan, Wales, on their Facebook page, Join our Journey, after struggling to get council accommodation.

“We’re a differently abled couple who happen to live in a tent outdoors, in the UK,” the introduction on their page reads.

“Although this wasn’t really our first choice, we are still determined to remain happy and productive throughout!! We are turning our homelessness from something negative to something positive.”

Burkitt’s grandfather said the couple’s situation highlighted the “desperate” housing situation in Wales, since the couple couldn’t get public housing together as they were from two different parts of the country.

“The coroner has rang us to say there will be a post mortem. They were living in this tent because they could not get a house,” he said.

He described his granddaughter as a “fantastic girl” who was “so clever and bright”, emphasising her love of art and her television success.

“She broke all sorts of viewing records at the BBC and got two awards,” he said. “This has shattered us, we have had no sleep. Everyone will miss her.”

While Burkitt was filming her show, she was a registered carer for her mother, who later died from lung and breathing problems in 2014. Both had an undiagnosed form of dwarfism, which doctors couldn’t find the cause for.

Her grandfather revealed she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and had a heart valve issue that meant she was taking three different types of medication and had to have hospital check-ups every six months.

In January, Burkitt shared with her followers on Instagram that she had been hospitalised due to her physical and mental health at the end of the previous year, adding that she was “so happy to be much more stable” and couldn’t wait to be back with Burke and their dog, Loki.

Image: @joinourjourneyinsta (Instagram)

Daunted by therapy? Virtual reality could be the answer

If opening up to a therapist seems like a near-impossible task, new research shows that you’re not the only one - and proposes a new option that could soon be available.

A study from Edith Cowan University, published in Frontiers in Virtual Reality, found that 30 percent of people surveyed would rather talk about negative experiences with a virtual reality (VR) avatar than a real-life person.

Researchers created a ‘realistic motion avatar’ that appeared similar to its real-life counterpart, then compared the social interactions between people talking to the avatar versus a real person.

Participants then rated their experience on factors such as enjoyment, comfort, awkwardness, perceived understanding, and how much they think they disclosed about themselves.

Dr Shane Rogers, a psychology and communication researcher involved in the study, said participants found VR and face-to-face interactions to be quite similar in all but one way.

“Overall, people rated VR social interaction as similar to face-to-face interaction, with the exception of closeness, where people tended to feel a little closer with each other when face-to-face,” Dr Rogers said.

“This technology has the potential for broad application across a number of areas such as casual conversation, business, tourism, education and therapy,” he said.

“The study found that 30 percent of people preferred disclosing negative experiences via VR. This means that therapy might be opened up to new people who don’t feel comfortable with traditional face-to-face interactions.”

Virtual reality has been used in video games for several years now, but new research shows it can also be used in mental health settings. Image: Getty Images

Though VR has been around for several years, the new research is among several new studies and initiatives applying the technology to treat mental health conditions.

In the United States, veterans with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are being treated with the assistance of VR, which can transport them back to traumatic experiences - even if they struggle to remember the event or other details.

The tech has also been used in “empathy training”, where clinicians wear VR headsets to better understand what patients in their care are experiencing, particularly for veterans with dementia or older LGBTQ veterans.

“Now what you hear and what you see in front of your eyes is the same thing as a patient who’s experiencing dementia or an LGBTQ vertan who’s ageing,” Anne Lord Bailey, a pharmacist and director of clinical tech innovation involved in the scheme, told FedTech.

“All of a sudden, people start talking to you and what you hear is muddled, or your vision doesn’t see what you should be seeing. It looks distorted, or I can’t hear things because they’re not clear, even though I can tell that people are talking to me. Or, I get disoriented: I try to turn to the right, and things are shifty or crooked.”

Meanwhile, the UK NHS launched a treatment plan last year using VR to treat patients with trypanophobia, or a phobia of needles, ahead of their Covid vaccinations. Patients are treated by being exposed to scenarios such as a medical waiting room or blood draw, to help therapists treat patients’ fears in a controlled environment.

“VR is very effective at bridging the gap between real-life exposure and what the patient feels able to do at the time they enter treatment,” Vanessa Dodds, a cognitive behavioural therapist involved in the UK program, told Medical Device Network.

Dr Rogers echoed this sentiment, adding that improvements in the technology will improve its affordability and accessibility as a treatment option - with applications beyond therapy as well.

“It might also enable therapists to conduct therapy more effectively at a distance, as a person can be in the therapist room (in virtual reality) while seated in their own home,” he said.

“More powerful computers are becoming more affordable, VR headsets are continuing to develop, and more user-friendly VR interaction software platforms are becoming more available and being updated.”

Following the work by Dr Rogers and his colleagues, future steps will involve more investigation of how different aspects of the avatar affect user experience, as well as how VR can be used in therapeutic settings.

Image: Getty Images

Princess Charlene’s sad reality without her kids

Princess Charlene of Monaco has given a glimpse into her recovery from surgery, after weeks of “painful” separation from her husband and children.

The 43-year-old former Olympic swimmer took to Instagram to share several snaps from her call with her two twins, six-year-old Princess Gabriella and Prince Jacques.

“Spending time with Jacqui and Bella,” she wrote.

“Making blankets for the crèche next door. The devastating reality behind Steve Irwin’s unearthed letter

A bitter family feud has taken centre stage after Bindi Irwin accused her grandfather of psychologically abusing her.

The embattled family’s long standing issues are a far cry from the heartbreaking letter uncovered in 2016.

It was a note Steve wrote when he was 32, and in it he detailed his gratitude for his parents and their strength.

Image: Supplied

“At 32, I am finally starting to figure it out. In good times and in bad, you were there. Your strength and endurance to raise me will not go unrewarded. My love for you is my strength,” the legendary croc hunter penned.

“For the rest of my life I will reflect on the unbelievably GREAT times we’ve shared and will continue to share. You’re my best friends!”

Irwin’s letter would not be found for almost a decade, but four years after writing it, the conservationist would give birth to his daughter Bindi with Robert closely following behind.

Image: Supplied

Today’s bitter feud is nothing short of devastating, with Bindi insisting her grandfather has never had a kind word to say about her.

The star made the unsettling allegations against Bob in her Father’s Day post (Father’s Day outside of Australia was June 20), which she dedicated to her own father, her husband, Chandler Powell, and her father-in-law.

When Bindi was asked why she left Bob out of the tribute, the new mum did not hold back in her reply.

“Unfortunately my grandfather Bob has shown no interest in spending time with me or my family,” she wrote.

“He has returned gifts I’ve sent him after he opened them, he has ignored my correspondence and from the time I was a little girl he has ignored me, preferring to spend time doing anything else rather than being with me.

“He has never said a single kind word to me personally. It breaks my heart but it is not healthy to engage in an abusive relationship.

Image: Supplied

“I hope everyone remembers to be kind to one another but most of all care for your own mental health,” she added.

“I have struggled with this relationship my entire life and it brings me enormous pain.”

Close friends and family members of Bob Irwin quickly rebutted the claims, including his biographer Amanda French.

French, who co-wrote Bob’s 2016 autobiography The Last Crocodile Hunter, spoke to Brisbane radio show Stav, Abby and Matt to express her immense grief over Bindi’s comments.

According to Amanda, Bob resigned from Australia Zoo in 2008 and hasn’t seen his grandkids since.

“It’s a surprise with what Bindi came out and said. There were some pretty weighty terms that were thrown around, psychological abuse and all that stuff. You’d have to have some pretty big evidence to back that. It’s a pretty big call to make,” she said.

Another member of the Irwin family, Bethany Wheeler, went on to angrily dispute Bindi’s claims in a Facebook post.

Bethany revealed that she is the “the granddaughter of Bob Irwin via marriage of my father and my Stepmother Mandy as a very young child.”

She went on to call Bob “the most genuinely beautiful human on this planet and has NEVER spoken out or put down anybody! He is a man who sits silently and battles his demons alone, in what is great sadness. He doesn’t retaliate, only prays for his grandchildren’s safety and good lives.”

Wheeler wrote that her “sisters and brothers will happily back me up when I say that Bob Irwin is a passive and beautiful human and these lies need to stop”.

Image: Supplied

Amanda revealed Bob and Terri Irwin’s relationship suffered after the death of Steve, as the conservationist’s father did not agree with how management quickly began to change.

“He’s maintained a very neutral position about it [resigning] even when he published his autobiography.

“The reason why he did that is because he knew there would be consequences for Australia Zoo. He didn’t see eye-to-eye on issues to do with Australia Zoo at the time and some of the animals.”

In the wake of the international media storm, Bindi announced she would be “taking a break” from social media as a means to protect her mental health.

“I’m taking a break from social media and most of my work in the public eye for a month to be with my beautiful daughter and my wonderful family,” she wrote on Instagram.

“I feel tremendously grateful to share our life and conservation work with you but I need some time to focus on the happiness that is my family (both human and animal).”

Terri Irwin also posted a cryptic yet seemingly pointed message on her own social media.

Taking to Twitter, she shared a post about “avoiding certain people” just days after the family’s feud made headlines.

The full quote was penned by author and military veteran Steve Maraboli, and reads: “Avoiding certain people to protect your mental health is not a weakness … It’s wisdom.”

She captioned the snap, “Thank you @SteveMaraboli. Another jewel. Caring for others seems to be easier than caring for ourselves.

“It takes courage to follow through on what we know is the right thing to do. Wishing everyone the best to be brave and wise. It’s worth it!”

A social media influencer has raised over £1m (AUD$1.8m) in less than a day to help his daughter get life-saving treatment for leukaemia.

Ashley Cain, who appeared on the MTV series Ex on the Beach, wrote on Instagram on Saturday that he and his partner Safiyya Vorajee, also an influencer, "are on our knees asking for help" after their seven-month-old, Azaylia, had a leukaemia relapse.

The baby requires a year-long CAR-T therapy, plus a haplo transplant, for the best chance of survival, Cain wrote.

It only took 16 hours after the post went up for Cain to hit the £1m target after more than 83,000 people donated.

The 30-year-old said: “After long discussions and a global outreach for treatment, our consultants along with consultants from around the world have come to the conclusion that the ONLY option to save a minimum period of 1 year.

“Because of the aggressiveness of Azaylia’s disease, we don’t have time on our side and we may have to fly out within a matter of weeks. Azaylia is such a strong little girl who has fought through every near impossible battle so far and she has done it all with love in her heart and a smile on her face!”

Cain and Vorajee welcomed Azaylia in August, and learned their baby was suffering from leukemia at eight weeks old.

“Azaylia had a frighteningly high leukemia count plus tumours in her spleen, stomach, lungs and kidneys which put her in critical condition and resulted in her being put into intensive care,” Cain wrote on the fundraising page.

“The doctors warned us that there was a high probability that she wouldn’t survive past the first round of chemotherapy due to the aggressiveness and rareness of her disease combined with her age.”

The couple, who have already surpassed their fundraising target, said they will donate any extra money to “other children and their families in the same situation”.

The shocking reality about Charles and Diana’s honeymoon

They honeymooned on board the royal yacht Britannia

After Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s “wedding of the century” at St Paul’s Cathedral in July 1981, the royal pair set off for Gibraltar on Spain’s south coast, where they boarded the Royal Yacht Britannia. The yacht cruised around the Mediterranean, including the Greek islands, for 14 days. The couple ended their getaway at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. It was a luxurious itinerary – but what really went down during those first few days of the couple’s doomed marriage? Turns out, a lot more drama than you might think.

Diana was still reeling over this engagement comment

While most people head out on their honeymoon with the impression that their partner is totally in love with them, Diana wasn’t so sure. Her insecurity stemmed from an awkward interview at the time of her and Charles’ engagement. “We had this ghastly interview the day we announced our engagement,” she told her speech coach on a tape that was later used for the Channel 4 documentary Diana: In Her Own Words. “And this ridiculous [news] man said, ‘Are you in love?’ “I thought, what a thick question. So I said, ‘Yes, of course, we are,’ and Charles turned round and said, ‘Whatever love means.’ And that threw me completely. I thought, what a strange answer. It traumatised me.”

Charles called Camilla every chance he got

Although Charles’ former flame Camilla Parker Bowles had already been married to her first husband, Andrew Parker Bowles, for eight years, Charles still found a way to call her from the Mediterranean. “The Prince simply had to be in constant contact with Camilla or he couldn’t function properly,” his valet Stephen Barry said in the book The Diana Chronicles. “If he went without his daily phone call, he would become tetchy and ill-tempered.”

The pair didn’t enjoy their first night together

“That first night was nothing special,” Charles told a friend, according to Tina Brown’s The Diana Chronicles. “It was pleasant enough, of course. But she really was painfully naive.” According to Brown, “Charles had enjoyed women who led him, mastered him, and mothered him. He was used to being served, not required to seduce.”

Charles wore a gift from Camilla on the honeymoon

As if calling Camilla wasn’t bad enough, Charles also received a gift from her. “On our honeymoon, cufflinks arrive on his wrists,” Diana said on the Channel 4 tapes. “Two C’s entwined like the Chanel ‘C’. Got it. One knew exactly. So I said, ‘Camilla gave you those, didn’t she?’ He said ‘Yes, so what’s wrong? They’re a present from a friend.’ And boy, did we have a row. Jealousy, total jealousy. And it was such a good idea – the two ‘C’s – but it wasn’t that clever.”

The couple’s incompatibility became extremely apparent

Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s 12-year age gap had always been known, but never was it more apparent than aboard the Brittania. The 32-year-old prince envisioned spending his honeymoon sunning, swimming, reading, painting, and writing thank-you letters. “He’d taken along his watercolours, some canvases and a pile of books by the Afrikaner mystic and writer Laurens van der Post, which he’d hoped he and Diana might share and then discuss in the evenings,” wrote Penny Junor in her book The Duchess. “Diana, however, was no great reader. She hated his wretched books and was offended that he might prefer to bury his head in one of them rather than sit and talk to her. She resented him sitting for hours at his easel, too, and they had many blazing rows. One day, when Charles was painting on the veranda deck of Britannia, he went off to look at something for half an hour. He came back to find she’d destroyed his painting and all his materials.”

Diana’s bulimia spiralled out of control

Princess Diana had been struggling with bulimia for months by the time her honeymoon came around. “[During our engagement], my husband put his hand on my waistline and said: ‘Oh, a bit chubby here, aren’t we?’ and that triggered off something in me,” she told her biographer Andrew Morton. “And the Camilla thing. I was desperate, desperate. I remember the first time I made myself sick. I was so thrilled because I thought this was the release of tension.” The disorder only got worse aboard the Britannia.

Diana felt hopeless about the marriage by day two

While the world watched the prince and princess in awe, Diana began to feel despair. She told her biographer Andrew Morton that her “tremendous hope was slashed by day two.” At one point, she wrote “I feel so small, so lonely, so out of my depth,” according to Tina Brown’s book. The couple announced their separation in 1992 and divorced in 1996.

IMAGE: Shutterstock

Written by Juliana LaBianca. Duchess Meghan to star in Netflix reality show

The Duchess of Sussex’s first post-Royal TV gig will be a Canadian reality show about second weddings, revealed The New York Post.

The 38-year-old is said to make a number of appearances on I Do, Redo joining her best friend, Toronto wedding stylist Jessica Mulroney, who is the star of the Netflix show, according to a source close to the production team.

The source revealed that Meghan’s role will be “sporadic” but didn’t reveal if the Duchess would be getting paid.

Union scale for a guest role on Canadian TV is $588 a day, which could kickstart the couple’s newly announced effort to become “financially independent”.

The 10-part series “revisits first-time wedding disasters before remaking the wedding dreams of 10 devoted couples,” reads a press release.

No one can deny that the former actress, who was once divorced before marrying Prince Harry, is perfect for the job as the role helps brides remarry their own Prince Charming in the wedding of their dreams.

The American had her own fairytale wedding only two years ago in a star-studded ceremony in Britain, which cost over $42 million. Her bespoke wedding dress was designed by French luxury brand, Givenchy, and her custom-made engagement ring was made from a diamond sourced from Botswana and two smaller stones from Harry’s mother – Princess Diana’s – collection.

Meghan is currently residing in a billionaire’s mansion in Vancouver with her son, Archie since her and Harry announced their separation from the British royals in January.

It is believed that she is looking for a Hollywood agent, according to reports.

The problem with virtual reality is endless possibilities

Just a few years ago, virtual reality (VR) was being showered with very real money. The industry raised an estimated US$900 million in venture capital in 2016, but by 2018 that figure had plummeted to US$280 million.

Oculus - the Facebook-owned company behind one of the most popular VR headsets on the market - planned to deliver 1 billion headsets to consumers, but as of last year had sold barely 300,000.

Investments in VR entertainment venues all over the world, VR cinematic experiences, and specialised VR studios such as Google Spotlight and CCP Games have either significantly downsized, closed down or morphed into new ventures. What is happening?

Recent articles in Fortune and The Verge have voiced disdain with VR technology. Common complaints include expensive, clunky or uncomfortable hardware, and unimaginative or repetitive content. Sceptics have compared VR experiences to the 3D television fad of the early 2010s.

As a VR researcher and developer, I understand the scepticism. Yet I believe in this technology, and I know there are “killer apps” and solutions waiting to be discovered.

Last week, Western Sydney University hosted a global symposium on VR software and technology, at which academics and industry partners from around the world discussed possible ways forward for VR and augmented reality. Among the speakers were Aleissia Laidacker, director of Developer Experience at Magic Leap; University of South Australia computing professor Mark Billingurst; and Tomasz Bednarz, director of UNSW’s Expanded Perception and Interaction Centre.

Virtual reality, literal headache

One problem discussed at the symposium is the fact that VR experiences often cause health-related issues including headaches, eye strain, dizziness, and nausea. Developers can partially deal with these issues at the hardware level by delivering balanced experiences with high refresh and frame rates.

But many developers are ignoring usability guidelines in the pursuit of exciting content. Gaming industry guidelines used by Epic, Oculus, Marvel, and Intel recommend that games completely avoid any use of induced motion, acceleration or “fake motion”, which are often the main cause of discomfort and motion sickness.

Yet the vast majority of available VR experiences feature some kind of induced motion, either in the form of animation or by basing the experience on user movement and exploration of the virtual environment.

I have met many first-time VR users who generally enjoyed the experience, but also reported “feeling wrong” – similar to enjoying the clarity of sound in noise-cancelling headphones but also having a “strange sensation” in their ears.

Killing creativity

Queasiness is not the only turnoff. Another problem is that despite the near-limitless potential of VR, many current offerings are sorely lacking in imagination.

The prevailing trend is to create VR versions of existing content such as games, videos or advertisements, in the hope of delivering extra impact. This does not work, in much the same way that radio play would make terrible television.

A famous cautionary tale comes from Second Life, the virtual world launched in 2003 which failed spectacularly to live up to its billing. Real-world businesses such as Toyota and BMW opened branches in Second Life, allowing users to test-drive badly programmed versions of their virtual cars. They lasted mere months.

Why would we prefer a humdrum virtual experience to a real one? No one needs a virtual Toyota. We need to give users good reasons to leave their reality behind and immerse themselves in a new one.

There have been some notable successes. Beat Saber, made by Czech indie developers, is the one of the few games that have explored the true potential of VR – and is the only VR game to have grossed more than US$20 million.

The VR Vaccine Project helps to take the sting out of childhood needles, by combining a real-world vaccination with a superhero story in the virtual world, in which the child is presented with a magical shield at the crucial moment.

I really hope VR is on its way to becoming more mainstream, more exciting, and less underwhelming. But we scientists can only present new technological solutions, to help make VR a more comfortable and enjoyable experience. Ultimately it is down to VR developers to learn from existing success stories and start delivering those “killer apps”. The possibilities are limited only by imagination.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag.
A US mum has been praised for her candid post about the realities of living with a member who has childhood cancer.

Her son has been diagnosed with leukaemia and has opened up on the ways that the diagnosis in 2015 has impacted the whole family.

Kaitlin Burge has documented her son Beckett’s cancer experience on Facebook and has shared a heartbreaking image of her other child Aubrey comforting Beckett during a bout of nausea.

"My two kids, 15 months apart, went from playing in school and at home together to sitting in a cold hospital room together," the mum writes.

"My then four-year-old watched her brother go from an ambulance to the ICU.

"She watched a dozen doctors throw a mask over his face, poke and prod him with needles, pump a dozen medications through his body, all while he laid there helplessly.”

Kaitlin explained that her daughter Aubrey struggled to understand what was happening to her brother.

"She wasn't sure what was happening. All she knew was that something was wrong with her brother, her best friend."

"He never wanted to play. She didn't understand how he was able to walk before this, but now he can't even stand unassisted," the post continues.

"Why couldn't they go to their favourite trampoline park anymore? ... Why didn't he have to go back to school, but she did?"

Kaitlin said that Aubrey never left her brothers side, which is something that Kaitlin strongly supported.

"She spent a fair amount of time, by his side in the bathroom, while he got sick. She stuck by him," she continues.

"She supported him and she took care of him, regardless of the situation. To this day, they are closer. She always takes care of him.

"Vomiting between play sessions. Waking up to throw up. Standing by her brother's side and rubbing his back while he gets sick ... This is childhood cancer. Take it or leave it."

The comment section was flooded with supportive messages from other families who praised Kaitlin for shining a light on childhood cancer.

"You are highlighting an often overlooked fact that cancer affects the entire family, especially childhood cancer," one writes.

"Your daughter has a loving and compassionate heart and is showing that by the way she is helping her brother."

"My other two children are much older but they break down watching their sister go through the motions. I can definitely relate," another says.

Scroll through the gallery to see Beckett and his sister on his journey through childhood cancer.

New study discovers sleep texting is a reality for users

Sleeping is a time for your body to rest, repair and reprogram itself before the next day. Although for some people it can also be a time to eat, talk, walk and – a new study has discovered – text.

The research was published in the Journal of American College Health, where 372 students were surveyed at two separate universities in 2013 on their quality of sleep and mobile phone usage as they slept.

Researchers asked questions such as “how many hours do you sleep a night?” and “where do you keep your phone?” amongst other things.

The results were astounding.

More than 25 per cent of people surveyed revealed they texted in their sleep. 72 per cent of those sleep texters had no recollection of having sent the text until they looked at their phone the next day.

The people who reported sleep texting were more inclined to say they experienced interrupted sleep and said they kept their phone in bed with them at night.

The survey also included an open-ended question where the students could discuss how they coped with sleep texting.

One student reported she went to the extreme length of wearing mittens to bed to prevent herself from texting as “moving the phone from being in my bed to next to the bed is not an option, I have to keep my phone with me.”

The sleep texters revealed that the quality of their texts are not entirely comprehensible and are often just a bunch of random words with no meaning.

The lead author of the study, Elizabeth Dowdell, began the research after several of her undergraduate students spoke about their sleep texting habits.

Most of the students who sleep text are female and most check their phones first thing in the morning to see if they had texted in their sleep.

“The majority were unwilling to turn off their phone at night,” Dowdell revealed.

What is the cause of this strange new sleeping habit?

Board-certified sleep medicine researcher and neurologist W. Christopher Winter, MD, of Charlottesville Neurology and Sleep Medicine as well as author of the book The Sleep Solution: Why Your Sleep is Broken and How To Fix It, provided insight into the situation during an interview for Yahoo Lifestyle.

“A small percentage of these people probably have a parasomnia, which is an abnormal wakening during deep sleep. But instead of walking or eating things they don’t remember, they’re texting.”

Another explanation included the delayed formation of memories once awoken from a deep sleep, “we can have automatic behaviour,” explained Winter, “that’s why you can have a conversation with your partner in the middle of the night, not remember the first part, and wake up when you’re already into the conversation.”

Drinking alcohol can also influence the likelihood of sleep texting, Winter adding, “alcohol can absolutely influence both behaviours and having that sort of amnesia for what you’re doing.”

How to prevent sleep texting

Winter recommended not sleeping with your mobile in your bed and instead keeping it “really out of your proximity.”

If you are someone who likes to keep your phone in your room, Winter suggested placing it across the room where you sleep so if you want to answer a text in the middle of the night your body is forced to go through multiple movements that should wake you up.

Winter also recommended keeping your phone on silent so it doesn’t wake you with noise, and even getting a phone lock that requires solving a math problem or replicating a pattern which will be hard to accomplish while asleep.

“Who controls technology? We control it. We’re the ones who turn it on and we’re the ones who turn it off,” reinforced Dowdell.

“If you can’t turn it off, consider putting some boundaries around it like sleep mode or program it so that only certain people can text through at night. Also, don’t sleep with your phone in bed."

Try a scoop of ice-cream from the Movenpick Ice Cream Bar.

The Living Reef

One of the best things about Daydream Island was the resort’s “living reef” and we’re delighted that it is back.

The free-form coral lagoon wraps around the central hotel building. It will hold 1.5 million litres of water and meander for 200m. Keep your eyes peeled for seastars, sea cucumbers and crabs – they are all in there.

Getting there

Daydream Island Resort is one of seven islands of the Molle Group of the Whitsundays. Getting here is easy – with access from Queensland’s Airline Beach and Proserpine Airport.

The island is small – just 1km in length and 400 m at its widest point. You can watch sunsets over the water and take walks around the island at sunrise. The highest point on the island is 51 metres above sea level. Grab a kayak and paddle all the way around the island after breakfast. Then flop down by the pool for the afternoon.

Daydream Island is surrounded by reefs – offering a great chance from some gently snorkelling. Dive in and explore the marine world below. You will be able to see tropical fish, stingrays and the occasional turtle.

The resort will also arrange tours out the edge of the Great Barrier Reef, where you can see the famous Heart of the Whitsundays and find Nemo hidden in the coral.

Written by Alison Godfrey. The weird reality of what Baby Sussex's life will be like

With the world waiting with bated breath for the announcement of Baby Sussex's arrival, who is due any day now, many have started to wonder what kind of life the newest member of the royal family will lead.

As it’s Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan’s first child, many are curious as to whether or not the baby will live the same life as its cousins, Prince George, 5, Princess Charlotte, 3, and Prince Louis, 1.

However, there are many differences between Baby Sussex and his/her royal cousins.

Non-working royal

It’s likely Baby Sussex will be in the spotlight of heavy media attention but won’t have a job working full-time for the Queen.

This is the case for Prince Harry and Princess Beatrice. Prince Harry works full-time for the Queen, whereas Princess Beatrice is close to the throne, but not close enough for full-time jobs with the Queen.

Beatrice’s sister Eugenie explained to Vogue magazine how difficult it is being a “working royal”.

“There is no precedent, there is no protocol,” Eugenie told Vogue back in 2018. “We are the first: we are young women trying to build careers and have personal lives, and we’re also princesses and doing all of this in the public eye.”

Not being close enough to the throne to have a full-time job with the Queen could be a blessing in disguise. Royal commentator Victoria Murphy told The Sun that Baby Sussex will have more freedom:

“There’s no chance (Harry and Meghan’s baby) will ever be king or queen — this baby has so much more freedom than William and Kate’s children do,” she said.

She also added they “will not be expected when they get older to carry out full-time royal duties”, meaning they can potentially “carve their own path”.

The same can’t be said for George, Charlotte and Louis, as they will be expected to work as full-time royals throughout their lives.

Social media

Baby Sussex could have a personalised Instagram, as the same restrictions that were posed to Meghan before she was engaged to Prince Harry are unlikely to be forced on her child.

View this post on Instagram

Just one week ago, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex asked that you kindly consider supporting various organisations around the world in lieu of sending gifts for the upcoming arrival of their first born. YOU chose to be part of the collective good, and you have made a real difference. Whether a $5 donation, £1000 contribution, offering to volunteer, or spreading the word – you’ve played your part.
