Scarlett Johansson finally offloads NYC penthouse

Nearly two years after first listing it, Scarlett Johansson has finally sold her Manhattan penthouse - with nowhere near the profit she was first hoping for.

The 38-year-old actress bought the two-bedroom, two-bathroom penthouse in 2008 for $3 million ($USD 2.1 million), as reported by The Post.

After listing it in July of 2020 for $3.6 million ($USD 2.5 million), Johansson was forced to slash the price in December by around $880,000, before finally selling it for $2.7 million ($USD 1.87 million).

Despite the $300,000 loss, the Black Widow is unlikely to feel the pinch considering she has a net worth of $237.8 million ($USD 165 million).

The home, which overlooks the East River and boasts skyline views and room for al fresco dining, was also listed for rent while Johansson was looking for a buyer for a hefty $8650 or $NZD 9300 ($US 6,500) a month.

Its other features include hardwood floors, floor-to-ceiling windows, an open kitchen with marble countertops and an expansive walk-in-wardrobe in the master suite.

The new owners will also get to enjoy the amenities that come from being in an apartment building, including a full-time doorman, an additional laundry room, and a parking garage.

Images: Realtor.com

Great-grandparents sell multimillion-dollar penthouse to help COVID-19 research

An elderly couple in Queensland have decided to donate the proceeds of their multimillion dollar seaside penthouse in order to help researchers develop a vaccine for COVID-19.

Keith and Glenda Drake, both in their 80s, decided to auction off their two-storey penthouse on the Sunshine Coast and want to assist in the search for a cure.

The couple moved from the penthouse to an acreage property with their 57-year-old son Neville who requires round-the-clock care as he lives with quadriplegia cerebral palsy.

Keith said that the penthouse was earning rental income but decided as long as they have enough income to look after their son’s needs, the money could be put to better use.

"We have enough, we know what we need for Neville and his condition, and the rest of our family," he said to ABC.

"We won't live forever, we're in our 80s … so I said to Glenda, 'Let's do it' and she said, 'Yes!'.

"I understood the significance of this pandemic, I realised how serious it was, and thought the laboratories must really be needing some money to do what they've got to do.

"Without them coming up with a remedy we could be stuck with this thing for a long time."

The couple had already donated $100,000 to the cause but felt the money “wouldn’t get them very far” and decided to add their proceeds from the penthouse to the donation.

The funds will go towards expanding national trials, testing the effectiveness of two drugs in the treatment of COVID-19 and other medical research projects.

"I couldn't do what they do [medical staff] and that to me is of greater significance than what we are doing," Mr Drake said.

"Giving a material thing is not as valuable as the time and energy put in by these medical people.

"Those people doing the work — carers, people fighting fires — those are the wonderful people who deserve accolades, not people like us who have just been lucky in business."

The funds will go to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (HBWH) Foundation Coronavirus Action Fund, and chief executive Simone Garske said that the family are “incredibly generous”.

"The funds from the sale of the property will allow research projects, such as clinical trials, to occur and be expanded when necessary, so we get answers faster," she said.

Inside Barbara Sinatra's $11 million Los Angeles penthouse

Barbara Sinatra’s Los Angeles penthouse is hitting the market for US$8 million (NZ$11.9 million).

Located on the Wilshire Corridor in Westwood, the apartment was where the late socialite lived after the death of her husband, legendary singer Frank Sinatra.

Before her death in 2017, Barbara used to entertain celebrity guests and friends such as Gregory Peck and Kirk Douglas, and invite them over for poker nights, according to Leonard Rabinowitz, listing agent of Hilton & Hyland and a friend of the Sinatras.

The 520-square-metre property boasts four bedrooms, five terraces, an open floor plan and views of the mountains, ocean and city on all four sides.

The living room features a wood-burning fireplace, along with a built-in bar and cocktail area, and a table that can be flipped over to become a poker table. A set of sliding glass doors connects the living room to the outdoor dining area with sceneries of surrounding mountains.

The formal dining room has a private outdoor atrium and lounge area, while the kitchen is lined with black marble countertops.

Before Frank died in 1998, he and Barbara split their time between their Beverly Hills estate and a Malibu beach house, Rabinowitz said. After the singer’s death, Barbara and her friends were robbed on a Beverly Hills street, prompting her to look for an apartment with additional security.

She bought the 24-hour surveillance Westwood property in the early 2000s from Marilyn and Harry Lewis of the Hamburger Hamlet restaurant chain, according to public records.

Scroll through the gallery above to see inside Barbara Sinatra’s lavish penthouse.
