Hall of Fame fighter hospitalised after saving elderly parents from fire

In the heart of Ohio, a story of heroism and sacrifice has emerged from the flames of a devastating house fire.

Mark Coleman, a revered figure in the world of mixed martial arts (MMA) and the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship), found himself in the midst of a harrowing ordeal, where his actions transcended the octagon to demonstrate unparalleled bravery and love for family.

On a fateful Tuesday morning, as the dawn painted the sky over Fremont, Ohio, tragedy struck the Coleman household. Details of the fire initially emerged through local news outlets, shrouded in anonymity. However, it wasn't long before the truth surfaced – it was Mark Coleman, the UFC legend, who had selflessly rushed into the inferno to rescue his elderly parents from imminent danger.

Reports indicated that Coleman, aged 59, wasted no time in the face of adversity. With unwavering determination, he courageously carried both of his parents, Dan and Connie Foos Coleman, to safety, braving the engulfing flames that threatened to consume their home. Yet, his valour knew no bounds as he plunged back into the fiery abyss, driven by an instinctive urge to save another beloved member of the family – their loyal dog, Hammer.

Tragically, despite his desperate efforts, the canine companion did not survive the blaze. Coleman's daughter, Kenzie, revealed on social media that Hammer's persistent barking had roused her father from slumber, ultimately saving his life. This heartbreaking loss added another layer of sorrow to an already traumatic event.

As news of Coleman's heroic act spread, an outpouring of support and prayers flooded social media platforms. His second daughter Morgan, in an emotional Instagram post, recounted her father's selfless deeds and pleaded for continued prayers during this trying time. To the Coleman family, Mark wasn't just a UFC pioneer; he was a beacon of strength and resilience, a cherished father and a beloved friend.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Morgan Coleman (@mocoleman18)

Mark Coleman's legacy in the world of MMA is undeniable. Dubbed "The Godfather of Ground-and-Pound", he etched his name in the annals of UFC history as the organisation's inaugural heavyweight champion in 1997. His contributions to the sport earned him a well-deserved place in the UFC Hall of Fame in 2008, solidifying his status as a true icon.

However, beyond the glitz and glory of the octagon, Coleman's journey has been marked by personal struggles and triumphs. In 2020, he battled a heart attack, a testament to his resilience in the face of adversity. A year later, he confronted his demons, seeking rehabilitation for alcoholism, and emerged stronger, embracing a healthier lifestyle.

Author Jonathan Snowden, who shared a close bond with Coleman and was poised to document his remarkable life story, offered a glimpse into the aftermath of the fire. Through poignant images capturing the devastation, Snowden provided a raw and unfiltered portrayal of the ordeal.

This is what's left of the house Mark Coleman and his family were in last night.

Mark's dog Hammer woke him up to a house in flames. The journey to this point has been marked by adversity, as the couple had previously experienced the loss of two children during pregnancy. Kaitlin underwent a surgical procedure called a cerclage, a delicate intervention aimed at preventing further losses by temporarily sewing the cervix closed with stitches.

The Vilasuso family's openness about their highs and lows has endeared them to many, and as Lucy fights for her health in the NICU, the couple is once again relying on the support of their community to pray for a miraculous healing for their precious daughter.

Images: Instagram

Kevin Spacey hospitalised

Kevin Spacey's recent health scare made headlines as he was rushed to the hospital during a film festival in Uzbekistan.

The 64-year-old House of Cards star was attending the festival when he experienced a frightening moment of numbness in his left arm, lasting approximately eight seconds. Concerns arose that he might have suffered a heart attack, prompting immediate medical attention.

Spacey's health incident occurred in the historic city of Samarkand while he was exploring the Afrasiyab Museum. Without delay, he was transported to the Innova Diagnostic Clinic, where he received prompt and professional medical care from the clinic's dedicated staff.

Following a series of medical tests, including an MRI, the actor received reassuring news from doctors. Fortunately, it was not a heart attack, and he was given a clean bill of health. With his health concerns behind him, Spacey resumed his participation in the Tashkent International Film Festival.

Addressing the festival's audience, the Oscar-winning actor candidly shared details of his unexpected health scare during the closing ceremony. "I was looking at these extraordinary murals on the walls, and I suddenly felt my entire left arm go numb for about eight seconds," he revealed. "I shook it off, but I immediately told the people I was with, and we went immediately to the medical centre."

During his afternoon at the clinic, Spacey underwent a battery of tests, all of which yielded reassuring results. Expressing gratitude that the situation was not more severe, he commended the medical expertise available in Samarkand. "Human life is very fragile and short, so everyone should live together and support each other," he urged the audience.

In addition to addressing his health scare, Spacey applauded the film festival for being a haven of "peace, progress, and enlightenment". He had hosted a master class at the event the previous day and emphasised the importance of creating an environment conducive to nurturing new ideas.

"The workshops that have taken place have allowed professionals to help young aspiring filmmakers learn and grow," Spacey noted. Drawing from his own experiences growing up in similar programs, he recognised the significance of such opportunities. "It's extraordinary that the Central Asian region is coming together, working together, and giving this opportunity to so many people," he stated. "You should be proud of the work that you're doing, and I'm honoured to stand here with you today and support you."

Spacey concluded by teasing a self-proclaimed "comeback" and asserting that his "best roles were ahead of him".

Image: Instagram

As recently as days before his incident, Jamie had been seen recording scenes with co-star Cameron Diaz in England.

Cameron had previously announced her retirement from acting, but credited Jamie with getting her back on board when she signed up to star alongside him - in their third film project together - when she declared on social media that “only you [Jamie Foxx] could get me back in action. I can’t frickin’ wait it’s gonna be a blast!”

And while rumours have swirled that Cameron intended to resume her retirement following the reported on set ‘drama’, a source stressed to Page Six that this was not the case.

“When you are in a position of authority, sometimes you have to make decisions to let people go who do not share the same vision as you,” the source said, before explaining that they would be surprised to learn of any lingering tensions between the film’s two stars.

“Cameron is a businessperson and understands that this is necessary at times and, honestly, Jamie is the only reason that she is doing this film and they are still very close.”

Images: Getty

Pope Francis hospitalised

Pope Francis, 86, was hospitalised in Rome's Gemelli hospital on Wednesday with a respiratory infection that requires him to remain under observation for a few days.

"In recent days Pope Francis has complained of some breathing difficulties," Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said in a statement.

The pope was taken to hospital for medical checkup, which then revealed the respiratory infection.

Bruni added that tests have shown it was not Covid, but the infection “will require a few days of appropriate hospital medical treatment".

“Pope Francis is touched by the many messages received and expresses his gratitude for the closeness and prayer,” Bruni added.

The statement comes after the Italian media questioned whether the pope was unexpectedly hospitalised, or if he actually went for a scheduled checkup, as a TV interview scheduled with the pope Wednesday afternoon had been cancelled at the last minute.

Earlier that day, the pope appeared to be in good spirits as he greeted the general audience at the Vatican in his popemobile.

A Vatican source has also confirmed that the pope’s activities on Thursday were cancelled, and others were likely to follow, in what is his busiest period with Easter Sunday coming up on April 9.

Pope Francis has had part of his lungs removed in his early 20s after almost dying when he developed pleurisy, so he is generally more exposed to respiratory problems.

He also suffers from diverticulitis, which is a condition that can infect or inflame pouches in the digestive tract, and has had surgery for it in 2021.

In January, he said that the condition had returned and did not elaborate further.

The pope also has a problem with his knee, which has led him to cancel or limit activities last year and alternates between using a cane and a wheelchair in public.

Despite all of his health issues, the pope has said that he has no plans to resign soon, unless his health deterred him from doing his job.

Image: Getty

"How did you live with this much pain?": Bindi Irwin hospitalised

Bindi Irwin has issued an emotional statement on social media after undergoing surgery for endometriosis.

The beloved Australian conservationist has been battling with the condition for 10 years, and detailed in her post what it had been like to struggle with “insurmountable fatigue, pain & nausea.”

She confessed that she had spent a long time wondering whether or not she should share her story, but ultimately believed it to be her “responsibility” to share her story for others like her who haven’t been able to get the help they desperately need for their condition.

“I’m aware of millions of women struggling with a similar story,” Bindi wrote, “there’s stigma around this awful disease. I’m sharing my story for anyone who reads this & is quietly dealing with pain & no answers. Let this be your validation that your pain is real & you deserve help. Keep searching for answers.”

According to the World Health Organisation, endometriosis - a chronic disease for which there is no known cure - affects approximately 10% of the world’s population of women, girls, and gender diverse individuals of a reproductive age (that’s roughly 190 million people). It is associated with severe pain during periods, bloating, nausea, fatigue, and even infertility.

However, the symptoms can be so varied that healthcare professionals often struggle to diagnose the condition, and that many sufferers don’t know enough to put a name to it. Due to this, there are often large spans of time between first noticing symptoms, getting a formal diagnosis, and getting help.

“These last 10yrs have included many tests, doctors visits, scans, etc.,” Bindi explained in her caption. “A doctor told me it was simply something you deal with as a woman & I gave up entirely, trying to function through the pain.”

“I decided to undergo surgery for endometriosis,” she continued, after noting that a friend had helped steer in the right direction. “Going in for surgery was scary but I knew I couldn’t live like I was. Every part of my life was getting torn apart because of the pain.

“To cut a long story short, they found 37 lesions, some very deep & difficult to remove, & a chocolate cyst. @seckinmd’s [Bindi’s doctor] first words to me when I was in recovery were, ‘How did you live with this much pain?’”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Bindi Irwin (@bindisueirwin)

Bindi, in true Irwin fashion, took the time to pay tribute to the support of her family and friends who had been on that journey with her for over a decade, and wrote of the “indescribable” relief at the “validation for years of pain”.

“THANK YOU,” she gushed, “for encouraging me to find answers when I thought I’d never climb out. John Farnham hospitalised after cancer diagnosis

Australian music legend John Farnham has revealed his recent cancer diagnosis.

The 73-year-old's family issued a statement confirming his condition, while also saying he is due to undergo surgery on Tuesday.

"We have recently discovered that John has a cancerous growth. He has been admitted to hospital this morning for surgery and ongoing treatment," the statement said.

Despite the diagnosis, Farnham is remaining positive that he can fight through.

"Cancer diagnosis is something that so many people face every single day, and countless others have walked this path before me," the singer said.

"The one thing I know for sure is that we have the very best specialist healthcare professionals in Victoria, and we can all be grateful for that. I know I am."

Veteran entertainment reporter Peter Ford said Farnham's family was "quietly confident things are going to be fine".

"They don't want people panicking. His wife is there, his two sons are there with him. The doctors are confident that they're able to get it," he said on Sunrise.

The revelation comes weeks after the Australian music industry was rocked by the death of Farnham's long-time friend and collaborator, Olivia Newton-John, following her ongoing battle with breast cancer.

The Farnham family expressed their "love and sympathies" to Newton-John's family in a statement following her death on August 8th.

"Behind that iconic smile was a tenacious fighter. A beautiful voice and a loyal friend. She will be greatly missed," the statement read.

Michael Slater hospitalised

Australian cricketer Michael Slater has been hospitalised as domestic violence charges against him were dismissed on mental health grounds.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Lachlan Kirby told Waverley Local Court - where Mr Slater was due to appear to appeal the charges - that the cricketer had been detained by police and paramedics on Tuesday night and taken to a mental health facility on the Northern Beaches.

The 52-year-old had appealed for the charges to be dealt with under the Mental Health Act prior to his hospitalisation.

Mr Slater’s barrister, Richard Pontello, appeared at the hearing via video link and consented to Magistrate Ross Hudson making his decision in Mr Slater’s absence, according to news.com.au.

The former Test cricketer was first charged late last year for allegedly using a mobile phone to harass his former partner between March and October, as well as stalking and intimidating her in Randwick on October 12 and 13.

He was arrested for a second time in December and charged with contravening an Apprehended Violence Order (AVO), as well as another charge of using a carriage service to menace, harass or intimidate his former partner.

Mr Slater sent 66 messages and called his ex 18 times in a period of two-and-a-half hours on the night of December 14, the court heard.

The court also heard that although his former partner blocked his number, Mr Slater sent multiple messages to her via WhatsApp that were signed under the name “MJS”.

Last week, Mr Pontello told the court Mr Slater was suffering from several mental illnesses, including major depressive disorder and ADHD at the time of the offences, but was in remission.

Mr Pontello previously told the court Mr Slater spent 108 days in a rehabilitation facility between January and March this year, and argued that it was in the public interest for Mr Slater to be dealt with under the Mental Health Act so his treatment could continue.

The police prosecution opposed the application due to the seriousness of the charges and the fact that he was out on bail for the second round of charges.

Mr Hudson noted that Mr Slater was seeking treatment for his mental health before ruling that the charges be dealt with under the Mental Health Act.

“He has a significant illness and has done significant work since that period of time, and he should be proud of that,” Mr Hudson said.

He ordered Mr Slater abide by a treatment plan for 12 months.

Mr Slater will also be the subject of an AVO from his former partner for five years.

Image: Getty Images

"Trauma is a beast": Grace Tame hospitalised

Content warning: This article includes discussions of suicide and mentions of sexual assault, abuse, and domestic violence.

Two former Australians of the Year have spoken out about the toll of speaking out about the worst moments in their lives and being an advocate, warning that “trauma is a beast”.

Grace Tame and Rosie Batty spoke about their experiences during a talk titled ‘Protecting the Outspoken’ at the 2022 All About Women festival at the Sydney Opera House on Sunday.

Grace Tame says she likely wouldn’t be alive today if it weren’t for her fiancé and has had to call ER in recent days. There is a disproportionate amount of shame that is still pointed towards people who do not understand yet what has happened to them,” she said.

“And that shame needs to be pointed squarely, not (at) these people who are trying to figure out what the f**k happened to them, it needs to be pointed at the perpetrators of domestic violence, of sexual assault and child sexual abuse.”

Ms Batty, who has campaigned for domestic violence reform following the murder of her son, Luke, by his father in 2014, said her place in the public eye had been “bittersweet”.

“I think it’s overwhelming. I think imposter syndrome. I think, ‘all these people I’ve (been) nominated against, you know, have done amazing work for decades. Who am I?,” she said of receiving the Australian of the Year award in 2015.

“I always felt very conflicted. Am I just getting this award because my son was murdered?”

Ms Batty said it took her many years to process her grief and had poured herself into her work to avoid the “deep trauma” of her son’s death.

“I was so afraid of failing and not being good enough or perhaps overcompensating and poured myself into it,” she said.

“I mean, this is eight years since I lost Luke. And it is an overwhelming journey.

“I had a sense of purpose and meaning that gave me a reason to get up every day. So ultimately, it was my drive. It was my reason to keep living. So I would never change that.

“But what it did do was isolate me, disconnected me, and I couldn’t understand why people didn’t keep in touch with me anymore.

“I can tell you during the first year of Covid lockdown when other people were working out, and feeling dissatisfied or frustrated or pushing back on government restrictions, I was finally choosing which urn to put Luke’s ashes in. And it was uncomfortable and it was painful, but you have to eventually sit with pain. And we do avoid it, we drink, we smoke, we take drugs, we do anything to avoid pain.”

Ms Tame also spoke about the backlash she faced over a campaign she was involved in to fight for women’s rights, after complaints emerged that it featured too many white, middle class faces.

She has urged feminists and progressive campaigners to avoid exclusionary language and said she was still learning about the language and history of feminism.

“There’s been a lot of criticism, and that’s part and parcel of the landscape. But, you know, people bring their heart and soul to this. And there’s a lot of trauma in it,’’ she said.

“I’m accountable for my mistakes. And that’s one thing that I’ve tried to do as best as I can, especially as someone who, you know, I didn’t go to university. I didn’t do gender studies. You know, and I don’t have as good a knowledge as I could have of feminist history, and all the terminology, but I do my best to understand and to learn.”

Image: Roy Vandervegt / Adelaide Festival

Rod Marsh hospitalised

Australian cricket legend Rod Marsh has been rushed to hospital after reportedly suffering a massive heart attack.

According to The Australian, Marsh remains in a critical condition after his heart stopped beating for several minutes on Thursday morning.

He was reportedly in Bundaberg for a charity event, suffering the heart attack while travelling to a hotel in a car with Bulls Masters officials John Glanville and David Hillier.

“John and Dave deserve so much credit because the doctor said if they had waited for an ambulance he would not have made it,’’ Bulls Masters boss Jimmy Maher told The Australian.

“The medical staff at the Bundaberg Hospital were wonderful. We are all shocked. It’s terrible."

“I could not believe it. Rod landed at 10.05am and rang me from the car at about 10.30. He said he could not wait to have a beer with me."

“Then soon Dave rang me from the car and told me what had happened. Hospitalisation of children sparks concern over Omicron Covid variant

A South African doctor has expressed concern over the effects of the new Omicron COVID-19 variant on children, saying that more have been hospitalised with moderate to severe symptoms as a result.

Dr Rudo Mathivha, head of Intensive Care at Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital, said the number of patients reporting to hospitals has increased exponentially since the new variant took hold.

She said the hospital has reportedly admitted around 5-10 children at a time.

The doctor also spoke of a 15-year-old with the virus who had died after his condition rapidly deteriorated, as well as of a 17-year-old who had been placed on a ventilator in ICU with coronavirus-related pneumonia.

However, it is unclear whether they both had the Omicron variant.

“The situation is pretty concerning,” Dr Mathivha told the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).

The omicron variant is sending more children to hospital in South Africa. And we are seeing a large number of admissions in the middle ages, sort of around 28 to 38.”

Dr Jassat noted that the trend could be due to children under 12 still being unvaccinated, and because parents were more concerned about the new variant, making them more likely to take their children to hospital at the first signs of illness.

“The very young children have an immature immune system and they are also not vaccinated, so they are more at risk.”

Image: Getty Images
