13 stylist-approved tricks for having the shiniest hair ever

<p><strong>Rinse with cold water</strong></p> <p>Perhaps you’ve heard that cold water helps constrict pores. Well, it has a similar effect on your hair. According to stylist, Stefani Padilla, cold water seals and smooths the hair cuticle, locking in moisture and adding shine. After using shampoo and conditioner, finish with a blast of cold water.</p> <p><strong>Give gloss a try (at the salon)</strong></p> <p>At your salon appointment, ask your stylist for a gloss treatment. “A clear gloss, with a little gold colour in it, delivers the ultimate shine,” says colourist, Will Francis. “I like to leave it on for at least ten minutes.” The way the light reflects off hair post-gloss makes it look super lustrous.</p> <p><strong>Minimise heat styling</strong></p> <p>Heat styling can wear away hair’s cuticles, so it becomes dry, frizzy and breakage-prone. Padilla advises giving your hairdryer and flat iron a rest in favour of air-drying, at least a day or two a week.</p> <p><strong>Invest in an ionic hairdryer</strong></p> <p>Of course, there will be occasions when you want a bouncy blow-dry. So it’s important to invest in the right type of tool – specifically an ionic blow-dryer, which dries the hair faster than alternatives and helps reduce static. One major blow-dry mistake that may be sabotaging your style? Ignoring the nozzle attachment. It’s there for a reason and that’s namely to smooth strands and enhance shine.</p> <p><strong>Blow-dry like a pro</strong></p> <p>Remember, it’s not just about the tool, but how you use it. Be sure to hold the hairdryer a few centimetres away from your head to moderate heat damage. “Always blow dry from root to end – in the direction of the cuticle,” says celebrity colourist, Michael Canalé. “Keep the brush moving while doing so. The continuous, fluid motion smooths and flattens the cuticle, resulting in shiny hair.”</p> <p><strong>Opt for protective products</strong></p> <p>When it comes to heat-styling, you already know that protecting your tresses is a must. But what you might not realise is that pollution and UV rays also damage hair. The right formula can shield against heat and environmental damage.  A nourishing oil “is great because it protects hair from thermal stress, UV, colour fade and environmental aggressors. I always use it on my clients,” says Francis.</p> <p><strong>Slather on some oil</strong></p> <p>Restore radiance with a nourishing oil. Use it as a weekly treatment (massage into scalp and strands) or smooth a few drops daily on the ends to enhance hydration and sheen. Padilla recommends using a lightweight oil, like a nutrient-rich jojoba oil infused with shine-boosting rosemary, protective Ayahuasca plant essence, and moisturising vitamin E.</p> <p><strong>Up your omega intake</strong></p> <p>Certain nutrients are shown to improve hair health – chief among them omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. “Your body needs these to produce lustrous locks, from the inside out,” says Padilla. Load up on fish, like mackerel and sardines. Don’t love seafood? Consider a fish oil capsule. Other omega-rich foods include walnuts, flaxseeds (and oil), avocado and tofu.</p> <p><strong>Shampoo less frequently </strong></p> <p>You’ve certainly heard this before, but it bears repeating… stylists are begging you to stop shampooing your hair every day. Washing less actually preserves shine by allowing natural oils to do their job, according to Francis. Try to limit cleansing to two or three times a week, and make sure you know how to properly wash your hair.</p> <p><strong>Use a clarifying shampoo - in moderation</strong></p> <p>Clarifying hair is important to avoid build up, which can deplete the shine. Want squeaky clean strands? Consider adding a clarifying shampoo into your rotation once a month (but not weekly as it can dry out your tresses). When it comes to picking the right formula, Padilla recommends steering clear of chemicals and sulphates, which can strip the hair as well as open the cuticle. “The key to shine is to keep cuticle closed and protected,” she says.</p> <p><strong>DIY an apple cider vinegar rinse</strong></p> <p>Another in-shower, shine-booster is a weekly apple cider vinegar rinse – it’s basically a DIY version of a clarifying shampoo. Combine two tablespoons apple cider vinegar with one cup water. After shampooing, saturate strands. Rinse thoroughly, and follow with conditioner on the ends only. “The citric acid in the apple cider vinegar dissolves root build up and any other follicle-clogging bacteria that dulls the hair,” explains Canalé.</p> <p><strong>Try a weekly treatment</strong></p> <p>Topical hydration is so important to maintain hair’s natural gleam. “I suggest my clients use a treatment or mask once a week, as a self-care ritual to heal and preserve hair health,” says Padilla. To use, simply massage into the scalp and pull through dry hair. For maximum hydration, keep it on overnight and wash out in the morning. The natural oils in these formulas lock in moisture and make hair shiny.</p> <p><strong>Brush daily</strong></p> <p>Channel your inner Marcia Brady. Well, not quite. While you don’t need to brush your strands 100 times, Padilla does suggest daily brushing. “Brushing pulls natural oils from the scalp down into the hair, which acts as a natural moisturiser,” she says. You’re probably washing your hair wrong - here’s how to fix it

<p dir="ltr">Unlike many other aspects of life, how to look after our hair isn’t necessarily something we’re taught to do.</p> <p dir="ltr">While there are plenty of tutorials, explainers and hacks for pulling off particular hairstyles, how-to’s for ensuring your hair is healthy (and looks it) seems to still be catching up.</p> <p dir="ltr">Hair expert Zoe Irwin says that many people who are washing hair incorrectly are even inadvertently damaging it, and has gone on a crusade to teach people how to care for their locks.</p> <p dir="ltr">Speaking to <em>The Sun</em>, the creative director at John Frieda Salons said hair is often more of an “afterthought” than other aspects of their physical wellbeing, such as skincare.</p> <p dir="ltr">“Your hair needs the same treatment in order to look its healthiest,” she says.</p> <p dir="ltr">To help your hair look its best and healthiest, here are some of Irwin’s top tips and advice across each stage of the hair-washing process.</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>Less is more when it comes to shampoo</strong></p> <p dir="ltr">According to Irwin, most of us use too much shampoo, and cutting back can not only save you money by making each bottle last longer but can lessen the amount of chemicals from shampoo that ends up in the environment.</p> <p dir="ltr">She suggests using only a small blob of shampoo - slightly smaller than a 50-cent coin - and to apply it by spreading the shampoo over your hand rather than directly onto your hair. This means that when you do wash your hair, the shampoo will be distributed more evenly.</p> <p dir="ltr">Irwin also discourages rubbing shampoo into your hair to create a lather, since your hair is at its most fragile when wet. </p> <p dir="ltr">Instead, massage your scalp by holding your head still and moving your fingers along your scalp.</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>Use conditioner from tip to top</strong></p> <p dir="ltr">After shampoo removes dirt and excess oil, conditioner comes in to nourish and replenish lost moisture - and there’s a way to apply it to avoid the dreaded feeling of a greasy scalp. </p> <p dir="ltr">Irwin says applying conditioner starting from the tips of the hair and working up to the top solves this problem, as the amount of product will dilute as you move towards your scalp. </p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>Take care when drying your hair</strong></p> <p dir="ltr">Finally, Irwin says drying your hair should be done with care - avoiding too much friction of heat on your fragile locks.</p> <p dir="ltr">Instead of rubbing your hair dry with a towel, she suggests wrapping it in a towel or hair wrap and delicately pressing and patting the towel against your head. The longer you do this, the less amount of time you’ll need to use your hair dryer.</p> <p dir="ltr">When you do switch on your hair dryer, it’s best to use it in small sections of your hair on medium heat in circular motions. This helps your hair not only dry faster but also reduces the amount of heat damage inflicted.</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>Wash intuitively and ditch the schedule</strong></p> <p dir="ltr">As for how often to wash your hair, Irwin doesn’t say, but that’s because it's highly subjective. Though there is plenty of debate about washing hair daily, every couple days, once a week or even less frequently, it all comes down to how your hair behaves.</p> <p dir="ltr">Dermatologist Dr Iris Rubin told Cosmopolitan it’s best to shampoo hair as flakiness, excessive grease, itchiness or build-up start to crop up, rather than by following a regular schedule - with finer, straighter hair generally needing more frequent washes compared to thicker, curlier hair.</p> <p><span id="docs-internal-guid-c38228cc-7fff-2500-a403-985e0c9b29c7"></span></p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Image: Getty Images</em></p>

‘Queer Eye’ star's haircare range now available

<p><strong>Easing our hair out of the pandemic</strong></p> <p>In the absence of hairdressers, some of us shaved it off in despair, while others embraced the inevitability of visible greys and creeping lengths, doing away with our straighteners and dyes and balayage.</p> <p>While the very nature of preening and styling our hair can be an immensely important part of feeling ‘ready’ for the day, there is also something quite freeing about a stripped-back beauty approach.</p> <p>During lockdown, searches for the ‘Curly Girl Method’ soared as people tried to recover their GHD-damaged locks, while many of us embraced working from home as a great opportunity to train our hair into less frequent washes.</p> <p>Society frequently conditions older women in particular, to feel as if their hair should be kept short and in a certain style, but as the country begins to slowly prepare for re-opening, many of us will find that we’re actually quite happy to keep up with our new haircare-normal. </p> <p>If you’re looking to ease yourself out of the pandemic without abandoning your low-key ways, here are our top haircare tips.</p> <p><strong>Embrace the greys</strong></p> <p><span>Grey hair will come for us all, and the process of fighting it can often be pretty laborious and expensive.</span></p> <p><span> The part that puts many of us off is the transitional process; ease yourself into it by asking for a ‘colour correction’ at the hairdressers instead of a dye, introducing subtle highlights so that the grey has something to blend into. </span></p> <p><span>Keep any brassiness at bay with a colour-correcting shampoo, and invest in thickeners; grey hair can naturally be thinner or sparser in terms of growth, so an extra boost of keratin or biotin via supplements (as approved by your doctor) might help to improve the overall look and feel of the hair.</span></p> <p><strong>Love your length</strong><span></span></p> <p>Many of us refer to long or ‘grown-out’ hair as if it is a bad thing, but it can be fun to have more to play with when it comes to styling. An awkward fringe or haphazard layers might be causing some embarrassment now it’s time to get back out in the world, but good accessories can work workers.</p> <p>Over-sized clips or bandana scarfs are highly on-trend for this season; use them to sweep hair to one side or hide shorter lengths under longer parts in a braid or twist. </p> <p>The key to quick regrowth is good moisture; deep-conditioning masks should be used every other week for damaged or processed hair (every other week for natural), and styling products should be ones with a thick textural weight, such as a clay or gel, to keep wayward hairs in place.</p> <p><strong>Rediscovering your curls</strong></p> <p>Join the masses of those who are embracing their natural hair texture with the curly girl method. Exact instructions and effects will differ depending on your hair type, but the general aim is to encourage your hair to grow healthier, fuller and with more definition, doing away with the damage of excessive heat-based styling.</p> <p>Start with a ‘resetting’ sulphate-heavy shampoo to remove any silicone build-up from your hair, and then condition until your locks feel fully saturated, detangling with fingers or a wide-toothed comb.</p> <p>While hair is still wet, you can then apply styling gel and ‘scrunch’ hair into shape, allowing it to air dry. This process can then be repeated whenever you wash your hair, swapping the original ‘stripping’ shampoo for a more natural sulphate-free alternative.</p> <p>Teasing out your curls can take time and patience, but if you’re looking to get the look without all the effort, a good-quality salt spray (used judiciously) might help to create or define waves, particularly for those whose hair is on the straighter end of the spectrum.</p> <p>Identifying your hair pattern through a hairdresser or online tutorials might also help to streamline the process, allowing you to tailor your product purchases before you dive into a committed routine.</p> <p><strong>Soak up the sun safely</strong></p> <p>With nice weather finally upon us, it’s incredibly tempting to make up for all that indoors time by rushing out to soak up the rays.</p> <p>As well as sunscreen, it’s important to remember that your hair and scalp needs protection too.
