Russell Crowe unveils new look not seen in over 20 years

Russell Crowe, the man of many faces – literally, his beard has its own postcode – is making headlines again. Not for his stellar performances or his knack for embodying iconic characters, but for something far more groundbreaking: he shaved.

Yes, you read that right. Russell Crowe has gone from grizzly lumberjack chic to smooth operator in what can only be described as a follicular metamorphosis of epic proportions.

In a tweet that shook the internet harder than a magnitude 9 earthquake, Crowe proudly announced, "The actor prepares #20. First shave since 2019".

The actor prepares #20.
First shave since 2019. pic.twitter.com/e48ctxh9GY

— Russell Crowe (@russellcrowe) February 19, 2024

Now, to put this into perspective, in 2019 we were all living in a blissful ignorance of the chaos that awaited us in the years to come. So, the fact that Russell Crowe has finally decided to bid farewell to his facial foliage is nothing short of a miracle.

In the accompanying photo, Crowe stares into the camera with the seriousness of a man who has just discovered a rare species of moth living in his beard. His face, now liberated from the tangled web of hair, appears decades younger, causing fans to collectively question if time travel is, in fact, possible.

But let's not forget, this isn't Crowe's first rodeo with a clean-shaven face. Even though he cites "2019" in his caption, the last time he showcased such ephemeral smoothness was back in 2012 while promoting Les Miserables – a time when the world was still recovering from the shock of "Gangnam Style" and debating the colour of a certain pinstriped dress. So, it's safe to say, Crowe's clean-shaven look is rarer than a blue moon on a leap year.

Of course, fans couldn't contain their excitement. One Twitter user exclaimed, "20 years younger instantly!" Another fan, probably needing a moment to catch their breath after witnessing the transformation, simply stated, "oh THERE you are". And let's not overlook the fan who eloquently remarked, "Looks good! It’s nice to change it up and shave. You have a nice face it was hiding behind all that hair." Ah, poetry in the age of social media.

But what prompted this seismic shift in Crowe's appearance? Well, he didn't spill the beans on which movie role necessitated the razor, but we can only imagine the possibilities. Perhaps he's playing a time-travelling barber who inadvertently alters the course of history with each stroke of his razor. Or maybe he's set to star in a reboot of The Santa Clause as the titular character who decides to trade in his bushy beard for a more aerodynamic look. The possibilities are as endless as the hairs on Crowe's chin once were.

Whatever the reason, one thing's for sure: Crowe's fresh shave has left an indelible mark on the internet. And as he gears up for roles in everything from historical dramas (he’s pegged to play Hermann Göring in the film Nuremberg) to MMA action flicks (such as The Beast In Me, which traces the life of a commercial fisherman who avenges his brother's death by fighting in a cage match), we can only hope that his newfound smoothness becomes a permanent fixture.

After all, in a world of chaos and uncertainty, sometimes all it takes is a clean shave to restore our faith in humanity.

Images: Poker Face / Twitter (X)

Russell Crowe loses best friend in tragic accident

Gladiator star Russell Crowe has announced the tragic passing of his puppy, Louis.

The actor broke the news on Twitter, explaining that his “tiny, cheeky, [and] brave” boy had been hit by a truck, and despite the best efforts of vets, had lost his life.

"This is Louis the Papillion. 16 months old. Tiny, cheeky, brave. He won my heart," he wrote alongside an image of the pup.

“Unfortunately today, on the second anniversary of my fathers passing, Louis was hit by a truck.

"We tried to get him to the vet, but he died in my arms while I was telling him how much we loved him."

Condolences poured in through Russell’s comment section, with many noting that their hearts were breaking for his family in this difficult time.

“We are heartbroken for you and so deeply sorry for your loss. Louis will be in your heart forever. Sending all of our love, comfort, and strength,” wrote animal rights group PETA.

“So sorry to hear this Russel. My heart goes out to you,” said fellow actor Vincent D’Onofrio.

“I am so sorry! What a beautiful face and those eyes. I like to think our pets wait for us to join them one day, loyal as ever,” self-proclaimed ‘dog devotee’ Alicia Rancilio shared.

And as Today’s Michelle Stephenson summed it up, “Well this is just so heartbreaking”.

This is Louis the Papillion.
16 months old.
Tiny, cheeky, brave. Today, although the sun is shining and the torrential rain has abated, this date will forever be tinged with sadness.

“My dear old man, my beautiful dad, the most gentle of men, has passed away.”

Despite the grief sure to be weighing heavily on his shoulders, Russell and his family will always have their happy memories with Louis - and Russell’s dad - to hold on to.

Like the dress up day Russell and Louis shared in December 2021, where Russell overcame his distaste for “dressing dogs up” to match his little friend.

After sharing that it wasn’t his thing - as well as a photo of the two with their heads together and a smile on Russell’s face - he went on to explain in a tweet that a friend had bought a Ralph Lauren polo shirt for “little Louis … so he can match with dad.

“I think the other dogs on the farm are going to get jealous. Pretty funny.”

I’m not at all a fan of dressing dogs up, but, a friend bought little Louis a ⁦@RalphLauren⁩ polo so he can match with dad. Russell Crowe and girlfriend denied entry at restaurant

Actor Russell Crowe and his girlfriend Britney Theriot were refused entry at a Melbourne restaurant for not meeting the smart-casual dress code, according to a report.

The pair went to eat at Mr Myagi, a Japanese-fusion establishment in Melbourne, wearing outfits they had played tennis in earlier that day, and the staff were quick to deny them entry.

“He went there wearing a brand new Ralph Lauren polo, having just played a game of tennis and was turned away,” Crowe’s manager Grant Vandenberg told the Daily Mail Australia.

Mr Miyagi describes itself as “casual but fancy” where “work gear, activewear, singlets, and thongs” are forbidden.

The restaurant’s management doubled down on their decision to deny the pair service, saying no one is above their rules.

“We treat everyone the same. It doesn’t matter who you are or if you are Russell Crowe. We’ve got a dress code that we push across every level,” restaurant owner Kristian Klein told The Herald Sun.

“We are consistent with it and I don’t feel like it’s unreasonable," Klein added. “But I know personally if I’m in my thongs and my boardies, I’m not going to try and go to a nice restaurant, because I wouldn’t be dressed appropriately.”

Klein said the staff member that denied Crowe’s entry did not know who the Gladiator actor was, and it was a “very unfortunate situation for everyone”.

The restaurant had some fun with the situation, posting an updated dress code policy on Instagram.

“Dress smart casual, unless you’re Russell Crowe, then wear whatevs,” the sign read.

Mr Myiagi also addressed Crowe to clear the air.

“Dear Russell, During your last visit it seems we got off on the wrong foot. After much reflection on what occurred, we have made a permanent change to our dress code,” the caption read. “We would love to see you again in the future, you’re always welcome at Mr. Miyagi.”

According to the Daily Mail, radio broadcaster Steve Price and his partner were turned away from Mr Miyagi just days later for the same reason.

Crowe has now joined the list of recent A-listers who were denied service from restaurants.

Talk show host James Corden was banned from Balthazar, Keith McNally’s restaurant in Manhattan, in October 2022 after he allegedly mistreated the restaurant’s staff.

Other celebrities that have been turned away from establishments include Ariana Grande, who was banned from a California doughnut shop after being seen on a surveillance camera licking unattended pastries.

"Stone the crows": Who made Ray "Alf" Meagher cry

Home and Away legend Ray Meagher has broken down on Channel Seven's This Is Your Life after a series of emotional tributes.

The 78-year-old actor was discussing his life and career at Summer Bay when his past co-stars surprised him with endless praise for his role as Alf.

The first tribute came from Chris Hemsworth, who thanked Ray in a pre-recorded message for his kindness and support during Chris's time on Home and Away.

“Ray Meagher, godfather of Australian television, Australian icon, a flaming legend, my hero. Mate, what can I say?” he began.

“I remember very vividly the first time I walked onto a Home and Away set, the first time I met you. I was teaming with excitement and nerves — mostly about meeting you, the man, the myth, the legend."

“The moment arrived. I remember the doors busting open, and there you were down the end of the hallway, silhouetted by the sun, bathed in glorious light.

“We locked eyes, we got closer. I took a big deep breath and I thought, ‘He’s probably not a hugger’. I lifted my hand…and dived off into the costume department because I had lost my nerve.”

The audience chuckled at the Thor star’s hilarious recollection, but his next admission left Ray fighting back tears.

“Sure enough, you came up to me and you said, ‘Chris, wonderful to meet you. You’re gonna do great here’. You were kind, genuine and supportive, and you’ve remained that through my entire career. Thank you so much buddy, I love you. You’re a dear friend.”

Already overcome with emotion, Ray was presented with another surprise.

Kate Ritchie, who played the role of Sally Fletcher on Home and Away for 20 years alongside Ray, walked onto the set and embraced her co-star.

The pair watched a set of Home and Away scenes from 1990-2008, finishing with their on-screen goodbye at Palm Beach.

“Ray is really so much of what I learned as a person, but also as a performer,” she began, before grabbing Ray’s hand.

“And for both of us, we’ve played those characters for such a long time, that it is inevitable there is so much of us within them."

“When I watch that footage…I actually see two friends. He’s watched me grow from a girl into a woman, and he’s really proud of me. So I’m glad I’ve made you proud, thank you."

The Aussie icon told his former co-star that he’s still proud of her to this day, and his words "still stand".

“You mean a lot to me Ray, you know that,” Kate added, causing Ray to wipe his tears away with a tissue.

Ray has played Alf Stewart since 1988 and currently holds the Guinness World Record for the longest-serving actor in an Australian series.

His appearance on This Is Your Life moved many Home and Away fans online, with floods of people sharing their gratitude for the veteran actor.

"So emotional, tears are flowing. Congratulations Ray!! What a fantastic life!! You’re a wonderful man and a great actor,” one wrote on social media.

“Crying happy tears. It was so lovely to see Ray (Alf) get recognised like this. ‘Stone the crow’ as he would say. I hope he keeps going on the show,” a second added.

Russell Crowe "put through a wall" on crazy night out

NRL great Bryan Fletcher has opened up about his encounter with Russell Crowe that left the two scrapping on a boozy night out.

Featuring on Brett Finch’s 'Uncensored' podcast, Fletcher revealed the wild night he had with his South Sydney teammates and Crowe in the mid-2000s.

Fletcher was the Rabbitohs captain in 2003 when he joined the club from the Roosters, however the team had suffered a nightmare season after winning only three games.

The 47-year-old said he'd never met Crowe before his move to South Sydney, but had heard a rumour that the Hollywood star had promised to take the 2002 team to the Playboy Mansion if they made the finals.

Fletcher says he was left with his mind in a scramble after Crowe contacted him near the middle of the 2003 season.

Fletcher however believed it was not actually Crowe on the other end of the line, and instead one of his teammates was pranking him.

“I said, ‘How’s Meg? Is she good in the cot?’” Fletcher told Finch, referring to Meg Ryan who Crowe was dating during that time.

“I said something more crude than that.

“Then there was awkward silence and he goes, ‘Fletch, it’s Russell. Russell Crowe’.

"And when he dropped his voice I knew straight away it was him and I’ve just gone, ‘F***, how do I get out of this?’”

It turns out Crowe had wanted the South Sydney players to bring a pair of nice clothes after their training in order to take them out.

“My imagination just starts going so by the time I get to Sutto (John Sutton) who’s the 17th bloke, I said, ‘Sutto, you’re not going to believe this bro, we are going to the Playboy Mansion’,” Fletcher said.

“Everyone is frothing, thinking they’re going to the Playboy Mansion.”

Sadly enough, the Rabbitohs didn’t go to LA, but instead arrived at a hotel in Woolloomooloo where cricket greats Shane Warne and Merv Hughes were waiting to kick them into gear with some inspirational words.

However the night took a turn around 9 pm when Crowe brought out some bottles of Absinthe.

“We went through 10 bottles. Ten bottles later and we’re going mad. It’s on. Blokes are cheering and carrying on,” Fletcher said.

He went on to say Crowe had challenged him to some footy.

“It was an odd time but I’m thinking, ‘You’ve got to humour Russ, he’s put this drink on for us’,” Fletcher said.

“So Russell comes running at me and I tackle him how I always have my whole career and I miss him. He runs behind me and dives down behind an imaginary set of posts.

“I said, ‘Good on you Russ’ and kept walking. I take two steps and I get pushed in the back. It’s Russ. He just stops in front of me and he goes, ‘You f***ing dog. You’re a f***ing cat. You’re a waste of money, you’re South Sydney’s worst ever captain’.

"He was right but he didn’t have to say it to my face.

“The boys have jerried to what’s going on … I got the s**ts and said, ‘Let’s just do this again’.

“He basically gets up and runs at me and I get under his ribs and drive him … and put him through a wall and the boys are just going, ‘What the f*** are you doing? Why are you doing this?’

“Russ pops up, just shakes his head and goes, ‘That’s what I want to see!’ That was his motivation, so we end up having a terrific night, getting on the p***.”

Crowe's motivational tactics seemed to do the job as the Rabbitohs would go on to thrash Melbourne Storm that weekend.

However their victory was short-lived.

“We beat them 42-10 and we did not win another game all year,” Fletcher admitted.

Images: Getty

“Sworn to secrecy”: Aussie dad finally able to crow about daughter’s royal moment

As one of the four-person choir that sang at Prince Philip’s scaled-back funeral, Miriam Allan also stood out as the only woman. Back in his Newcastle home, her father watched on proudly.

Chris Allan said he has known his daughter was incredibly talented since she was a “musically precocious” six-year old.

Ms Allan performed Jubilate Deo, Benjamin Britten’s sacred choral composition, alongside the choir at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor on Saturday. But, this wasn’t the first time she’s sung the song, having performed it since she was a child growing up in New South Wales.

Before her latest performance and the establishment of her international renown as a soprano, her father said she would perform it at Newcastle’s Christ Church Cathedral.

“The Britten that they sang during the service, she’s been singing since she was a little kid,” Mr Allan said.

Having since moved to England in 2003, Mr Allan said his daughter would use him as a “sounding board”. He watched as her career blossomed, taking her on tours around the world with leading orchestras and choirs.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Miriam Allan (@miriamsoprano)

Reminiscing on fond memories of accompanying his daughter on piano, as a composer, and singing together, he said, “I played for her and gave her music to sing and so forth when she was younger.”

“There were many times when we sang or played together - I would play the piano and accompany her.”

The pair have performed on some of the same programs since she was a teenager. Russell Crowe remembers hilarious prank Nicole Kidman pulled on Jay Leno

Nicole Kidman may have pulled off the greatest television prank of all time – and it’s taken years for anyone to realise.

The Australian Oscar-winning actress known for her class and poise once tricked late night talk show host Jay Leno into using a very crude Aussie slang term countless times on his show, as he had no idea what the word meant.

Many were surprised the term was in Kidman’s vocabulary.

Kidman was left giggling after she had convinced the host that “crack a fat” meant something far more innocent that its true meaning (relating to male arousal).

Leno then casually dropped the phrase every chance he got according to the star’s close friend, Russell Crowe.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, Crowe recalled the hilarious incident which happened a few years ago.

“She said it (‘crack a fat’) and Jay kept repeating it over and over again, and Nicole realised the hole she’d dug herself into,” Crowe explained.

“Jay kept saying things like, ‘We’ll be right back after this break to crack a fat with Nicole Kidman!’ And that sent Nicole into giggles.”

Crowe and Kidman have been close friends for years, after they met in Sydney many years ago.

Crowe apparently did a “shoey” (the act of drinking an alcoholic beverage out of someone's shoe) at a party that Kidman had thrown.

“It was at a house party that I threw in Darlinghurst with my then-boyfriend,” Kidman, 53, told News Corp in 2018 of meeting Crowe.

She went on to say their friendship blossomed when they both began working in the US.

“I have an enormous amount of love and affection for him because we have been friends literally our whole life. It’s an admirable thing when you forge your way through, decade after decade.”
