Woman baffled by mother-in-law’s insane ask over baby name

A woman has gone head-to-head with her mother-in-law over the name she has chosen for her unborn child.

The pregnant woman took to Reddit to share her unusual predicament, explaining how her mother-in-law has demanded she change the name of her baby.

The soon-to-be mum shared how she recently had dinner with her husband’s family, where she decided to reveal the baby’s gender and name.

She had been keeping the information secret, but with only a few weeks of her pregnancy left, she decided to share the happy news that she was having a baby boy and had chosen the name Shawn for her son.

But not everyone shared her happiness over the moniker, as her mother-in-law went pale with shock and demanded she choose a new name.

“My in-laws got quiet for a moment before asking if there were other options we'd considered. Apparently, Shawn is the name of my 17-year-old sister-in-law Ashley's former bully who tormented her [for years],” the pregnant woman explained on Reddit.

While she empathised with her in-laws, she didn’t want to change the name as it was the only one her and her husband agreed on for their son.

She also explained that she hadn’t known about the family connection when they picked the name, and hadn’t picked it out of any malicious intent.

“We took forever to pick a name,” she said. “Shawn is the only one we could agree on.”

The dinner party soon ended after the argument began, but the mother-in-law didn’t back down, sending the expecting mum demanding messages.

“She texted me and my husband again to ask us to find a new name for Ashley's sake.”

“Would I be the a**hole for not wanting to change it? We were only able to agree on it a few weeks ago.”

Commenters were torn over the subject, with many rushing to the pregnant woman’s defence, saying she can pick whatever name she wants for her son.

“My spouse and sibling have the same name. Somehow, you just compartmentalise it,” one shared.

“I feel like if a new baby in my family shared a name with my bully I'd just adapt,” another wrote. “After all, Shawn is a VERY common name, so I can't freak out every time I hear it and survive in this world.”

However, a select few sided with the mother-in-law, sharing how stunned they were that the couple couldn't find enough compassion to pick another name.

One person said, “I understand the difficulty of finding a name that feels right, but for me, after learning this, Shawn would quickly become another name that didn't work. It's only been decided on it for a few weeks so I'd just go back to the drawing board.”

“My sister-in-law announced she was pregnant at my child’s funeral”

A woman has asked for advice on how to navigate her relationship with her sister-in-law, after the woman overheard an inappropriate conversation at her child’s funeral.

The grieving mother, a 28-year-old named Melissa, took to Reddit to share the heartbreaking story of how her toddler passed away after a battle with cancer.

Melissa described the time as the “hardest in my life”, explaining how she felt she lost “a part of herself” after the funeral.

While Melissa expected her toddlers’ memorial service to be difficult, she never predicted a family member would make it even harder.

The mother said that when she heard her sister-in-law telling people about her pregnancy, she thought the move was just cruel.

“She didn't make a big announcement but more than ten people at the service 'heard' and it's what everyone was talking about. To understate it, I was livid,” Melissa wrote on Reddit.

Melissa’s post then asked social media users for advice, as she was unsure how much of a relationship she wanted to have with her sister-in-law after the stunt.

The 28-year-old shared that she had fallen pregnant herself, and was facing pressure to have a party in celebration, but she didn’t want her whole family in attendance.

“I've been working on who I want to invite, and I really don't want my SIL there,” she said.

“Besides what she did, she's a vindictive and mean person and I cannot stand her.”

“I mentioned it to my husband and he says he couldn't care less whether she's there or not. But for the sake of saving face, I want opinions before I do this.”

She asked the online forum if she would be “an a**hole” for not inviting her, addin that she would still be inviting her husband's other sister and husband's brother's wife.

“The original SIL will be the only one not invited,” she clarified.

The post was flooded with comments as many backed up Melissa, slamming the sister-in-law for her selfish behaviour.

“I wouldn't want someone like that around me. Announcing a pregnancy at a child's funeral is insane,” one said.

“Cut her off and ignore everyone close to her. You are right to have nothing to do with her. She's totally classless.”

However, others encouraged her to have an adult conversation with her sister-in-law in an attempt to mend their relationship.

“Please let it go,” one person began. “This happened on a terrible day during a bad time for you. It's possible that could be clouding how you're looking at this, she may not have been malicious at all.”

The sky’s the limit: A brief history of in-flight entertainment

Olusola Adewumi John, University of Regina

As the winter holidays draw near, many of us are already booking flights to see friends and family or vacation in warmer climates. Nowadays, air travel is synonymous with some form of in-flight entertainment, encompassing everything from the reception offered by the aircrew to the food choices and digital content.

These services all add value to flying for customers. Passengers are now so familiar with in-flight entertainment that to travel without it is unthinkable.

The in-flight entertainment and connectivity market grew to US$5.9 billion as of 2019, a testament to its economic impact on both the airlines and the GDP of countries with airline carriers.

In-flight entertainment is so ubiquitous that, even if all other airline services were offered, the airline ensures a refund is made to the passenger affected if television content cannot be accessed.

A brief history

In-flight entertainment has evolved significantly over the years. Before in-flight entertainment media was introduced, passengers entertained themselves by reading books or with food and drink services.

The original aim of bringing in-flight entertainment into cabins was to attract more customers, drawing inspiration from a variety of sources, including the theatrical and domestic media environments. It was not initially for the comfort and ease of travelling, as it is today.

Inflight entertainment began as an experiment in 1921, when 11 Aeromarine Airways passengers were shown the film Howdy Chicago! on a screen hung in the cabin during the flight. Four years later, another experiment was carried out in 1925 when 12 passengers on board an Imperial Airlines flight from London were shown the film The Lost World.

It wasn’t until the 1960s that in-flight movies became mainstream for airlines. Trans World Airlines became the first carrier to regularly offer feature films during flights, using a unique film system developed by David Flexer, then-president of Inflight Motion Pictures.

Starting in 1964, in-flight entertainment evolved to include various media types like 16-mm film, closed-circuit television, live television broadcasts and magnetic tape. In the 1970s, for example, airplanes might feature a large screen with a 16-mm projector in one part of the plane, while small screens hung overhead in another section.

Seatback screens were introduced in 1988 when Airvision installed 6.9-centimetre screens on the backs of airline seats for Northwest Airlines. They have since morphed into the larger screens we are familiar with today, which are found on nearly every airline.

In-flight entertainment today

Most airlines nowadays have personal televisions for every passenger on long-haul flights. On-demand streaming and internet access are also now the norm. Despite initial concerns about speed and cost, in-flight services are becoming faster and more affordable.

In-flight entertainment now includes movies, music, radio talk shows, TV talk shows, documentaries, magazines, stand-up comedy, culinary shows, sports shows and kids’ shows.

However, the rise of personal devices, like tablets and smartphones, could spell the end for seatback screens. A number of U.S. airlines, including American Airlines, United Airlines and Alaska Air, have removed seatback screens from their domestic planes.

This decline is par for the course. To arrive at the complex system used by aircraft today, in-flight entertainment went through a number of different stages, as identified by aviation scholar D.A. Reed.

It started with an idea phase, which saw the conception of the idea, followed by an arms race phase where most airlines adopted some form of it. Currently, airlines are facing challenges in the final — and current — phase of evolution, and are dealing with failures linked to business concept flaws or low revenue.

Now that most air travellers carry electronic devices, fewer airlines are installing seatback screens. From an economic standpoint, this makes sense for airlines: removing seatback screens improves fuel costs and allows airlines to install slimmer seats, allowing for more passengers.

More than entertainment

At some point in the evolution of in-flight entertainment, it started to serve as more than just a form of entertainment or comfort. Now, it’s also a competitive tool for airline advertisements, and a form of cultural production.

In-flight entertainment has become an economic platform for investors, business people, manufacturers and entertainment providers, especially Hollywood. It also plays a key role in promoting the national culture of destination countries.

However, the evolution of in-flight entertainment hasn’t been without its challenges. As a form of cultural production, it often reflects the interests of advertisers, governments and business entities. It also follows that certain ideas, products and cultures are sold to passengers via in-flight entertainment.

The lucrative practice of capturing and selling passengers’ attention to advertisers was not limited to screens, either. In-flight magazines have always been packed with advertisements, and by the late 1980s, these advertisements had spread to napkins and the audio channels.

Despite its shortcomings and precarious future, in-flight entertainment still offers passengers a sense of comfort, alleviating concerns about being suspended over 30,000 feet above sea level. If you end up flying during the holidays, remember your comfort is partly thanks to this innovation.

Olusola Adewumi John, Visiting Researcher, Centre for Socially Engaged Theatre, University of Regina

This article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license. Bring a plate! What to take to Christmas lunch that looks impressive (but won’t break the bank)

Lauren Ball, The University of Queensland; Amy Kirkegaard, The University of Queensland; Breanna Lepre, The University of Queensland, and Emily Burch, The University of Queensland

Christmas lunch is at your friend’s house this year, and they’ve asked you to bring a plate. Money is tight. So, you find yourself wondering, “What’s cheap, healthy but also looks impressive?”

While a tray of mangoes would certainly be a cheap, healthy and colourful contribution, you want to look as if you’ve put in a bit of effort.

If you’re struggling for inspiration, here are some tried and tested ideas.

First, choose your ingredients

Check your pantry for inspiration or ingredients. Crackers, dried fruit or nuts are great ideas for a charcuterie board. You can use herbs and spices to add flavour to dishes, or you could use up packets of dried pasta to make a pasta salad. This is also a great way to clean out your pantry.

Focus on fruit and vegetables that are in season, so are cheaper and more readily available. Keep an eye out at your local fruit and veggie shop or market as it will usually have in-season fruit and vegetables in bulk quantities at reduced prices. Check out this seasonal food guide to help you plan your Christmas menu.

Ask around for deals by chatting to your local butcher, fishmonger or grocer and let them know your budget. They may suggest cheaper cuts of meat (such as, oyster, blades, rump caps). Try cooking corned beef or roast chicken in a slow cooker with lots of vegetables. Slow-cooked meals can be frozen and can come in handy for left-overs.

Lean into legumes. These are packed with fibre, protein, vitamins and minerals. They are also budget-friendly and a great way to add texture to salads. Tinned chickpeas, or cannellini, kidney, or butter beans are quick and easy additions that can make filling dishes go further. You could even turn tinned chickpeas into homemade hommus for a healthy and delicious side dish. Check out these healthy legume recipes.

7 ways to keep food costs down this Christmas

1. Plan ahead

Plan your menu by asking how many people are coming and checking for any food preferences or dietary requirements. Check for items you already have at home, and make a shopping list for only what you need.

2. Use free recipes

Use free online recipe collections and e-books tailored for budget cooking that can help you design your Christmas menu to meet your budget. This one was created by a group of accredited practising dietitians and has healthy, budget friendly recipes and ideas. You could also try this budget friendly collection of Christmas recipes from taste.

3. Involve the family

Get together with other family members and make it a challenge to see who can make the cheapest, most delicious dish. Get the kids involved in fun activities, such as making a DIY gingerbread house or putting together mixed skewers for the barbecue.

4. Pool your resources

Larger quantities of a single dish will be cheaper than multiple different dishes (and easier to prepare).

5. Frozen is fine

Use frozen fruits and vegetables if you need to. These can have just as many vitamins and minerals as fresh, are often cheaper than fresh produce and last longer. Try using frozen berries to decorate the pavlova or add them to your favourite cake, muffin or pie.

6. Make your own drinks

You could make your own drinks, such as home-brewed iced tea. See if anyone in your family has a soda stream you can borrow to make sparkling mineral water. Add some freshly squeezed lemon or lime for extra flavour.

7. Reduce waste

Use your own crockery and re-use leftovers to reduce waste. After all, washing up is cheaper than buying plastic or paper plates and better for the environment. Remember to save any leftovers and re-use them. Leftover fresh vegetables could be used to make a hearty soup or chutney.

It doesn’t have to be perfect

Christmas comes and goes quickly. If your cooking ideas don’t work out, it’s not the end of the world. Choosing healthy foods on a budget is important all year around, so you may like to think about trying these tips throughout the years to come.

Lauren Ball, Professor of Community Health and Wellbeing, The University of Queensland; Amy Kirkegaard, Postdoctoral Research Fellow, School of Human Movement and Nutrition Sciences, The University of Queensland; Breanna Lepre, Research Fellow, Mater Research Institute, The University of Queensland, and Emily Burch, Dietitian and Researcher, The University of Queensland

This article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license. Meg Ryan is back after a "giant break"

Meg Ryan is back and she has spilled it all, ahead of her first rom-com release in nearly 15 years.

In an interview with People Magazine, the When Harry Met Sally star revealed the reason why she took a step back from her career.

"I took a giant break because I felt like there's just so many other parts of my experience as a human being I wanted to develop," she told the outlet.

"It's nice to think of it as a job and not a lifestyle. And that is a great way of navigating it for me."

The 61-year-old also shared the inspiration behind her first rom-com What Happens Later, which she directed, wrote and starred in.

"It came to me during lockdown," she gushed.

"The essence of it is these two people who are stuck together. I just love that idea that we're held in a space, even if it feels conflicted, maybe for reasons that heal them."

This is the first rom-com that she has acted in for over a decade, with her last film in that genre being Serious Moonlight back in 2009.

In another another conversation with Interview magazine's Carol Burnett, she opened up about the process of making her film.

"Truly, the easiest part was acting in it," she told the publication.

"I want to direct again just so I can sit in the chair, because I’m sure there’s a lot of things I missed."

"I hadn’t done a role in a really long time, but it was fun with David," she added, referring to co-star David Duchovny, known for his role as Fox Mulder in The X Files.

"A lot of it was done in two shots. I’m proud of that. I set up everything beforehand so that once we were there, it was just David and I trying to tell the truth."

She revealed that the film was assembled together with a very "deliberate" process and a budget of only $3 million.

"We had to do it really quickly. A lot of those extras weren’t even ours, they were real people," she said.

"We went back in post and made everybody the same palette. There’s a lot of stuff you can do digitally now, thank god."

The actress first shot to fame in 1980 for her girl-next-door image, after playing the love interest in iconic films like the original Top Gun and When Harry Met Sally.

Images: Getty Images/ Edward Berthelot/WireImage

Post break-up Hugh Jackman reveals brand new look

In an inspiring turn of events, Hugh Jackman, the ruggedly handsome Wolverine of our dreams, has ditched his trademark beard, just a month after amicably splitting from his wife, Deborra-Lee Furness. We're not entirely sure if the divorce court stipulated a "no facial hair" clause, but the man's commitment to cleanliness is truly inspiring.

Jackman took to social media to reveal his fresh, beardless face to the world, leaving fans flabbergasted. The Aussie actor, who previously resembled a distinguished mountain man, now flaunts a look that screams "I might be going through a breakup, but my grooming game is still on point."

The transformation was nothing short of astonishing. Instead of the wild and untamed beard we've come to know and love, Jackman shared pictures of himself sporting neatly trimmed facial hair, captured during a visit to a New York barbershop. He even took two street selfies to commemorate this momentous occasion, radiating a vibe that said, "I am ready to tackle life with a jawline as sharp as my wit."

On his Instagram stories, Jackman posted a photo of himself grinning like a Cheshire cat in the barber's chair, with the caption, "Thank you Gabriel!!!" Clearly, he was thankful not just for the fine work of his barber but also for the chance to lighten his facial load.

Fans couldn't contain their excitement over the "fresh" new look. One fan enthusiastically wrote, "Post break-up Hugh is here! Bring it on." Another chimed in, "You look great Hugh, much cleaner and fresher." It seems the internet was united in their appreciation for the change, as one person couldn't help but comment, "OK, that beard was a bit too long. Now it is 👌. Good decision 😁."

Others couldn't resist a good-natured ribbing, with one cheeky commentator joking, "I bet that feels SO much better! We were going to start calling you Grizzly Adams soon 😂." Indeed, Jackman's transformation from a forest-dwelling hermit to a dapper gentleman is a sight to behold.

And, of course, there were those who declared Jackman "handsome as ever". It seems that even without his facial fur, the man can still make hearts flutter.

Jackman and Furness, who were married for 27 years, announced their separation in September. They revealed their intention to part ways for the sake of "individual growth". And it seems that Jackman's journey of personal development begins with a well-trimmed beard.

But what's next for this newly clean-shaven Jackman? Reports suggest that he's on a quest to find love again, with his inner circle placing bets on him "remarrying fairly quickly". Although some reports say he's still "mourning" his past relationship and isn't quite "back in the dating game" just yet, we have no doubt that his fresh face and renewed sense of self will lead to exciting prospects.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Hugh Jackman (@thehughjackman)

In a surprising twist, US Weekly has reported that the actor is "in the early stages" of writing his memoir, promising "big bombshells." Perhaps this newfound style transformation is just the tip of the iceberg in a series of revelations that will leave us all reeling. We can only imagine the epic tales of his time as Wolverine, his love story with Deborra-Lee Furness, and of course, the "No Beard, No Baggage" chapter.

October 12 marked Jackman's 55th birthday, with the actor reuniting briefly with Furness to celebrate at a New York restaurant. The couple enjoyed a "very happy" meal together with friends, and a source reported that it was a "good birthday". A representative for Jackman confirmed, "Yes, it's true. It was a lovely evening," proving that even in the wake of a separation, these two can still dine amicably.

Jackman and Furness are said to be speaking fairly regularly following their separation, and the bond between them remains strong. So, as we look forward to the next chapters in the life of Hugh Jackman, we can only hope they come with more shocking style changes, captivating memoirs, and a dash of his infectious charisma. After all, when it comes to Jackman, it's clear that even without his beard, he'll always be a cut above the rest.

Images: Instagram

"Cutest thing ever": Bride and groom praised for breaking wedding tradition

A bride and groom have been praised online for deviating from the traditional wedding party to include their siblings in an adorable way.

Carla Wehbe took to TikTok to share a video from her cousin Raymond's nuptials to his partner Bella, in which both the bride and groom wanted their siblings standing next to them on their big day.

Raymond had his sister wear a black dress, to match his groomsmen in their black tuxedos, and be given the title best woman.

In contrast, Bella’s brother was given a pink suit to match the pink dresses of the other bridesmaids and was given the title man of honour.

“The reason they did it was because their siblings were their best friends and they wanted them to stand by their side on their special day,” Wehbe said in an interview with Newsweek. “I loved the idea and thought it made the day really special.”

The video has racked up over 65 million views, with thousands of people flocking to the comments to congratulate the newlywed couple, while praising their decision to break with tradition.

“This needs to be done more often,” one comment read.

However, not all of the commenters were on board with the idea, while many traditionalists slammed the act.

Despite the critcs, Wehbe said most of the comments were positive, and that she wanted to use the video to let people know that they can have any kind of wedding they want, whether it breaks tradition or not.

“It will definitely inspire people who may have wanted to but were not sure if it was acceptable,” she said. “People should just do what makes them happy on their special day!”

Woman at the centre of alleged Beckham affair breaks silence

Rebecca Loos has decided to speak out amidst the wave of criticism she's facing in light of her alleged affair with David Beckham. The former model, now 46, is pushing back against the 'disturbing' remarks being made about her on social media, which have resurfaced following the release of the Netflix series about Beckham.

On October 6, a fan expressed their support for Loos amid the renewed attention and online harassment she's enduring. They voiced their disgust at some of the comments they had seen, stating, "Some of the comments on here are disgusting!!!" They went on to offer words of encouragement, saying, "Stay strong. You have a beautiful life with your gorgeous family, which, unlike others, doesn't have to involve Netflix!!!"

Loos responded to this supportive message on Instagram, expressing her gratitude and resilience, stating, "Thank you 🙏🏼 am taking in the nasty comments with as much humour as I can," and ending her comment with a heartfelt red heart emoji.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by REBECCA LOOS (@rebeccaloosofficial)

Numerous other users also came forward to support Loos on her most recent Instagram post, where she was pictured practicing yoga with the reflective caption: "Letting go and finding strength in the mountains of life."

One individual commented, "I have always admired your strength Rebecca! Keep being strong!" while another person hoped she was doing well and encouraged her not to let the negativity of others affect her soul.

Another fan commented on the renewed criticism and social media attacks on a woman they don't even know, urging people to "do better."

Back in 2004, Loos was accused of having an affair with Manchester United star David Beckham while she was working as his personal assistant. At the time, Beckham had been married to Spice Girls singer Victoria Beckham since 1999, and the allegations became a significant media sensation.

On October 4, Netflix released the documentary series Beckham, which delves into the football player's career and marriage, including addressing the rumours of his infidelity in the early 2000s. Both David and Victoria Beckham discuss the impact of tabloid rumors on their marriage during the series.

Victoria, in an individual interview for the series, admitted, "It was the most unhappy I have ever been in my entire life," and she shared how challenging it was, especially because they felt pitted against each other. David also acknowledged the difficulty of that period, emphasising Victoria's importance in his life and how hard it was to see her hurt but doubling down on their determination to overcome it together.

Images: Instagram

8 tips for keeping pets healthy that won’t break the bank

Australia is a nation of animal lovers. Collectively, we have more pets than people (28.7 million pets vs 26.7 million people) and spent $33 billion on them in 2022. Not only is a healthy pet a happy one, but healthy = wealthy with fewer vet bills and medications, plus less time off work to look after them. But how can you keep spending under control without sacrificing your pet’s health? Read on!

1. Choose the right pet

Save yourself considerable drama – and money – by getting the right pet for your family from the outset.

For instance:

Small dogs eat less, making them more suitable for tighter budgets.

Energetic breeds won’t thrive if you can’t exercise them sufficiently.

Low-allergy breeds (like Poodles and Burmese cats) can save allergy suffers on antihistamines and tissues.

2. Secure your yard

Prevention is always better than cure, so a secure yard/enclosure is a worthwhile investment.

The cost of a new fence (especially if split with neighbours) often dwarfs the vet bills if your beloved is hit by a car.

A secure pet is less likely to fight with other animals or eat things they shouldn’t.

Plus, many areas impose fines for unrestrained pets.

3. Be organised

An old phrase says: “For every minute spent organising, an hour is earned.” I’d suggest that hour earned also brings dollars saved.

For pets, organisation includes:

Staying up-to-date with treatments and veterinary visits. Overdue parasite treatments, vaccinations, and check-ups often cause unnecessary and expensive complications.

A tidy home, which saves replacing destroyed shoes etc and fees on overdue bills where the notice was chewed.

Keeping household dangers – e.g., toxic plants, chemicals, foods (chocolate!) – out of your pets’ reach to avoid accidental poisoning.

4. Weigh up insurance

Many people say they’ll put money aside instead of buying pet insurance. But they don’t – the money winds up elsewhere.

When considering insurance, weigh up each policy’s conditions, your pet’s health, and your ability to pay unexpected bills.

Without insurance, small amounts may not be problematic. But unexpected surgeries or specialist tests and treatments could see you thousands of dollars out of pocket.

The more claims you’re likely to make, the more valuable insurance may be.

If you do get insurance, choose a reputable provider with positive reviews for paying claims promptly.

5. Master DIY

Put your hands to work and make your pet’s essentials at a fraction of buying new.

Consider making your own:

Toys – such as uncooked rice or pasta in a PET bottle. (Beware things like sticks, which can cause injuries and splinters.)

Meals – cook in bulk and freeze portions for added savings and convenience. Homemade meals may be healthier too, since you know exactly what they’re eating.

Bedding and towels – from your old clothing, linen etc.

Always use safe materials and ingredients that won’t be a choking hazard. Monitor items for wear and tear.

6. Involve your kids

Getting kids/grandkids involved with animal care is good for everyone – including your wallet.

Kids love animals. Pets love children’s playtime energy. And you’ll save paying someone else to do it when you’re short for time.

Ask them to walk the dog, clean the litter tray, collect the eggs, top up food and water.

You can make it form part of their pocket money – teaching them the value of earning – all while helping them develop important life skills like empathy and responsibility.

7. Consider legalities

Custody and inheritance matters affect furbabies too, so it’s important to have a plan:

Wills – who will have guardianship if you die suddenly? Is that person willing and able? Have you left money to pay for their ongoing care?

Separation/divorce – pets sadly are sometimes used as weapons in a separation. It could be emotional blackmail over custody, or one partner is given custody but cannot afford to keep them on a single income. The stress adversely affects everyone – including your pet.

8. Spend time with them

Companionship is important for your pet’s health – and yours. And it’s free!

Research suggests dog ownership improves heart health for humans and patting pets lowers blood pressure and stress hormones. Plus, you’ll both benefit from being more active and making new friends (such as at the dog park).

So, what are you waiting for? Hitch up the lead or pick up a toy and give your furbaby some love!

Helen Baker is a licensed Australian financial adviser and author of the new book, On Your Own Two Feet: The Essential Guide to Financial Independence for all Women (Ventura Press, $32.99). Helen is among the 1% of financial planners who hold a master’s degree in the field. 5 memorable locations from ‘80s films to check out

Everyone loves a good movie, and everyone loves a holiday, so what do you get when you combine the two? The time of your life!

It’s widely known that the ‘80s spawned a whole host of films that went on to become cult classics - from the likes of Heathers to Footloose, Dirty Dancing, and The Terminator - and forged the way for cultural changes that ring true decades later.

But did you also know that for many of these iconic films, real-life locations served as the inspiration for many memorable scenes?

And while some may have changed slightly in the years since cast and crew flocked to them, some are like stepping into a time capsule - or a stage for you to re-enact the films as you see fit.

Lake Lure, North Carolina - Dirty Dancing (1987)

Anyone who’s seen Dirty Dancing can tell you that ‘the lift scene’ is one of the film’s most iconic moments. And it - along with a few others from the film - were filmed in North Carolina’s very own Lake Lure. And with the spot boasting its very own Lake Lure Inn & Spa - where, coincidentally, the movie’s stars stayed while working on the project - it could be the perfect getaway location for your next holiday.

Guesthouse International Hotel, California - National Lampoon Vacation (1983)

For those embarking on their very own National Lampoon Vacation, you’re in luck - the hexagonal pool is near exactly the same as it was when Chevy Chase’s Clark Griswold enjoyed a nighttime swim with Christie Brinkley’s The Girl in the Ferrari.

New York Public Library, New York - Ghostbusters (1984)

The 1984 film sparked an entire host of sequels, games, parodies, and conventions for avid fans across the globe - as well as one incredibly catchy song. However, for those that would like to go above and beyond just calling their friendly neighbourhood ghostbusters, the New York Public Library’s flagship Stephen A Schwarzman building is the spot where the team had their very first encounter with the film’s ghosts.

Griffith Observatory, California - The Terminator (1984)

Fans of The Terminator should immediately recognise this site as the one where Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator arrived in the nude, and basked in the glory of LA at night. It’s a popular location, and while a must-see for fans of the film, it also makes for a good afternoon out - the observatory itself boasts free entry, stunning views, and a range of fascinating exhibits inside to entertain the keen mind.

The Grand Hotel, Michigan - Somewhere in Time (1980)

The Grand Hotel was the primary location for romantic drama Somewhere in Time, and they’re proud of it. In fact, a poster for the film is reportedly even still on display there, and hosts weekends of celebration for the 1980 hit, too.

The island the hotel is set on doesn’t allow cars, so anyone hoping to throw themselves back in time and fully immerse themselves in a ‘different world’, this National Historic Landmark may be just the place to do it.

Images: Getty, Booking.net
