Holiday protesters are missing the big picture – there are ways to make tourism work for everyone

Brendan Canavan, University of Nottingham

As tourists sip their drinks at sunny pavement cafes this summer, they may feel slight unease that perhaps their presence isn’t entirely welcome. This season has seen a renewed wave of major protests against tourists for pushing out residents and homogenising culture in popular destinations.

Anti-tourist placards and gatherings have appeared in Portugal, Athens, Mallorca and Tenerife. Tourists have even been sprayed with water pistols by angry inhabitants of Barcelona.

Anti-tourism protests are not new, and they do not always share the same motivations. But one common grievance is that local economies are not improved by tourism, while the social costs of hosting mount.

But are these anti-tourism sentiments justified? Tourism contributes around 5% of EU economic activity, supporting jobs and businesses both directly and indirectly. Without tourism many places would be economically poorer. But protesters in Mallorca have argued that tourists take up space on beaches, put a strain on public services and drive the cost of housing above a level that residents can afford.

The economic pros and cons of tourism suggest the protesters have a point. But they are also missing the bigger picture.

An estimated 1.3 billion international tourist trips took place in 2023. These tourists spent over US$1.5 trillion (£1.2 trillion) on their trips. For comparison, that is roughly the size of the Spanish economy. If tourism were a nation, it would be a G20 member.

What’s more, because international travellers earn money in their home country and spend it in another, international tourism is counted as an export. In 2022 international tourists spent almost €370 billion (£312 billion) in the 27 EU countries, for example. This export income helps to balance the cost of imports and pay for things such as food and fuel not available locally.

Nonetheless, there remains a concern that such economic inputs come at too high a cost. In January the then head of Florence’s Galleria dell’Accademia controversially criticised how the city had sold its soul to tourists.

But tourism revenues help provide foreign exchange earnings, create jobs, encourage infrastructure investments and boost tax revenues. In turn these inputs promote economic development and increase welfare, as well as reduce income inequality.

Globally, the tourism industry is a significant source of employment. In 2019, prior to the pandemic, travel and tourism accounted for 10.5% of all jobs. In some Caribbean islands more than 90% of all jobs are in the tourism sector.

Crossover benefits of hosting tourists are felt in other industries too. Food and drink producers sell their products to tourists, for example, and farmers can diversify their incomes by offering tourist experiences such as wine-tasting tours.

Tourism generates a large amount of economic activity, therefore. But research shows that the income that remains in a destination is often limited by leakage rates. There are estimates that for every US$1 million spent by tourists in the Seychelles, less than half of this stays in the local economy. This income can leak out from the destination because of imports such as food and fuel that are not available locally. Leakage also occurs when tourist facilities are foreign owned.

There are undoubtedly downsides to tourism development. The influx of people into popular destinations can add to issues of crowding in public services and shared spaces.

Tourism is also often accused of causing urgent economic problems, such as forcing up the cost of housing for locals. But these are often driven by more complex and alternative factors.

Research in London, a city facing an extreme problem of supply scarcity and growing numbers of “generation rent”, found that Airbnb plays a relatively insignificant part in increasing housing costs. A study in South Carolina in the US meanwhile showed that short-term holiday rentals can boost hospitality micro-entrepreneurs and help residents to maximise the economic potential of their homes by renting out spare rooms.

What can tourists do?

Ultimately, what unites many anti-tourism protesters is a demand for respect. Indeed, research has shown that over-tourism is not merely an issue of overcrowding, but a long-term issue resulting from inappropriate treatment of residents in the process of tourism development.

Tourists can demonstrate that they respect hosts and help to alleviate anti-tourism feelings by finding ways to ensure their holiday is as economically beneficial to the destination as possible.

Spending money at smaller-scale and locally owned businesses puts more money into the local economy. Large multinationals can out-compete local businesses and worsen economic inequality. Foreign-owned businesses typically increase leakage rates as they send profits back to their headquarters.

Choosing more sustainable operators, services and destinations tends to bring economic positives. In Mauritius, for instance, the government has invested in sustainable tourism planning, enhancing economic growth and bringing benefits for residents.

Visiting places that are less typically touristic spreads economic advantages around. In Scotland, nature tourism supports around 39,000 full-time jobs.

It can be easy to scapegoat tourists and tourism for deeper-seated economic problems. Tourists are a highly visible, and frequently very annoying, presence. But without them destinations would be poorer, while persistent economic problems would likely remain. Challenging governments, policy-makers, corporations or institutions might be a better use of protesters’ energy.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. How sustainable is your weekly grocery shop? These small changes can have big benefits

Michalis Hadjikakou, Deakin University; Carla Archibald, Deakin University; Özge Geyik, Deakin University, and Pankti Shah, Deakin University

You might think eating more sustainably requires drastic changes, such as shifting to a vegan diet. While a plant-based diet is undeniably good for the Earth, our new research shows modest changes to your eating habits can also have significant environmental benefits.

We assessed how food products on Australian supermarket shelves stack up against key environmental indicators, such as carbon emissions and water use.

We found swapping the most environmentally harmful foods for more sustainable options within the same food group, such as switching from beef burgers to chicken burgers, can significantly reduce carbon emissions – by up to 96% in some instances.

The last thing we want to do is take the pleasure away from eating. Instead, we want to help consumers make realistic dietary changes that also help ensure a sustainable future. So read on to find out which simple food swaps can best achieve this.

Informing sustainable diets

The environmental impact of foods can be estimated using an approach known as a life-cycle assessment.

This involves identifying the “inputs” required along the food supply chain, such as fertiliser, energy, water and land, and tracking them from farm to fork. From this we can calculate a product’s “footprint” – or environmental impact per kilogram of product – and compare it to other foods.

Most studies of environmental footprints focus on the raw ingredients that make up food products (such as beef, wheat or rice) rather than the packaged products people see on shelves (such as beef sausages, pasta or rice crackers). Of the studies that do focus on packaged foods, most only consider a fraction of the products available to consumers.

What’s more, a lot of research considers only the carbon emissions of food products, excluding other important measures such as water use. And some studies use global average environmental footprints, which vary significantly between countries.

Our research set out to overcome these limitations. We aligned environmental footprints with the products people find on supermarket shelves, and covered a huge range of food and beverage products available in Australia. We also included many environmental indicators, to allow a more complete picture of the sustainability of different foods.

What we did

Key to our research was the FoodSwitch database, which compiles food labelling and ingredient data from images of packaged food and beverages. It covers more than 90% of the Australian packaged food market.

We combined the database with a mathematical method that sums the environmental impact of ingredients, to quantify the footprint of the product as a whole.

From this, we estimated the environmental footprint of 63,926 food products available in Australian supermarkets. We then simulated the potential benefits of making “realistic” switches between products – that is, switches within the same food category.

Our findings

The results show how making a small dietary change can have big environmental consequences.

For a shopping basket composed of items from eight food groups, we simulate the benefits of swapping from high-impact towards medium- or low-impact food products.

Our analysis assumes a starting point from the most environmentally harmful products in each food group – for example, sweet biscuits, cheese and beef burger patties.

A shift to the medium-impact foods for all eight items – such as a muffin, yoghurt and sliced meat – can lead to at least a 62% reduction in environmental impact. Shifts towards the most sustainable choice for all items – bread, soy milk or raw poultry – can achieve a minimum 77% reduction.

This analysis ends at the supermarket shelves and does not include additional food processing by the consumer. For example, raw meat will usually be cooked before human consumption, which will expand its environmental footprint to varying degrees, depending on the method used.

See the below info-graphic for more detail. The full results are available in our study.

What next?

Many people are looking for ways to live more sustainably. Insufficient or complex information can fuel confusion and anxiety in consumers, leading to inaction or paralysis. Consumers need more information and support to choose more sustainable foods.

Supermarkets and retailers also have an important role to play – for example, by giving sustainable products prominent shelf placement. Attractive pricing is also crucial – particularly in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis when it can be difficult to prioritise sustainability over cost.

Government interventions, such as information campaigns and taxing high-impact products, can also help.

Food labelling is also important. The European Union is leading the way with measures such as the eco-score, which integrates 14 environmental indicators into a single score from A to E.

Apps such as ecoSwitch can also empower consumers.

The diets of people in developed nations such as Australia exert a high toll on our planet. More sustainable food choices are vital to achieving a sustainable future for humanity. We hope our research helps kick-start positive change.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Anti-cellulite products are big business – but here’s what the science says

Rebecca Shepherd, University of Bristol

Although 90% of women have cellulite, we’re yet to see it represented as a normal anatomical characteristic in popular culture. In Greta Gerwig’s 2023 Hollywood blockbuster, for instance, Stereotypical Barbie, played by Margot Robbie, develops dimples on her upper thigh as part of her existential crisis – along with other human faults such as halitosis, flat feet and irrepressible thoughts of death.

When Stereotypical Barbie asks doll sage Weird Barbie what the dimples are, she explains: “That’s cellulite. That’s going to spread everywhere. Then you’re going to start getting sad and mushy and complicated.” Barbie’s perfect smooth plastic perfection is marred.

Despite its prevalence, then, cellulite has been constructed as a flaw in need of correction. Consumers, it seems, agree, especially when fed a diet of the photoshop smoothed skin of models, social media influencers – and Hollywood stars.

“NO!” Barbie shouts when Weird Barbie tells her she has cellulite.

Cellulite’s usually found in areas that have greater amounts of subcutaneous fat, when fat deposits push through the connective tissue beneath the skin, leading to a lumpy appearance. It is common, usually painless and harmless.

The human skin is the body’s largest organ, made up of three layers. At the surface, the epidermis acts as our first line of defence against the environment. This outermost, impermeable layer is made up of cells that are constantly renewed and shed, protecting our body from external elements.

Beneath the epidermis lies the dermis, a robust layer containing fibroblasts, the cells responsible for producing essential proteins such as collagen and elastin. These proteins provide structure and elasticity, contributing to the skin’s strength and flexibility.

Deeper still is the hypodermis, also known as the subcutaneous layer. This layer is rich in adipose tissue – mostly made up of fat, which plays a crucial role in cushioning and insulating the body, as well as storing fat that can be used when needed. Beneath these three layers of skin, there is muscle. Running from the muscle to the dermis are bands of connective tissue, that holds the adipose tissue in “pockets”.

Cellulite does not affect health, although some people report that it affects their self-esteem and body image but that’s more to do with the social pressure on women to be physically perfect – or spend money, time and energy trying to be as close to perfect as possible.

Cellulite, then, has become big business for the beauty industry. In the lead up to summer especially, companies will promote all manner of products from creams and serums to gadgets and pills, all aimed at creating perfectly smooth limbs. The most popular question seems to be, “Do these treatments work?” but as an anatomist I think the more pressing question is, “Why are healthy women’s bodies considered something to treat, cure or correct?”

The beauty and wellness industry has long capitalised on societal standards of beauty. The idea that cellulite is undesirable and should be corrected has been perpetuated since Vogue magazine was the first English language magazine to use the term “cellulite”, introducing the concept to thousands of women. This marketing strategy taps into the insecurities of consumers, particularly women, and promotes an endless pursuit of “perfection” for bodies that have normal anatomical variation.

By framing cellulite as a condition that needs treatment, companies can sell a wide range of products and services, bolstered by celebrity endorsements, which lend credibility and aspirational value to pseudo-medical “smoothing” products. However, there is limited scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of these supplements in treating cellulite. In fact, the first scientific paper on cellulite, published in 1978, referred to it as “so called cellulite: the invented disease”.

Recent product launches include, Lemme Smooth, Kourtney Kardashian-Barker’s latest addition to her vitamin and supplement range. The product’s promotional materials claim that the capsule “visibly reduces cellulite in 28 days”. But what does the science tell us?

Supplements like Lemme Smooth claim to improve skin texture and reduce cellulite from within. Kardashian-Barker’s supplement contains a mixture of french cantaloupe melon, hyaluronic acid, chromium and vitamin C among other ingredients. The body’s ability to absorb and utilise these ingredients in a way that would impact cellulite is still a subject of debate.

There is evidence that ingested hyaluronic acid can migrate into the skin, stimulating the production of collagens within the dermis – and vitamin C has been shown to thicken the surface layer of the skin. However, the lack of standardisation in testing for the use of these ingredients in the treatment of cellulite means it’s still not clear if they will have a significant effect.

Other products marketed to reduce the appearance of cellulite include topical creams and lotions, containing ingredients like caffeine, retinol, and herbal extracts. Cosmetic products are not able to penetrate the epidermis enough to significantly affect the underlying fat deposits and connective tissue.

Some invasive treatments, such as laser therapy, subcision, and acoustic wave therapy can offer more promising results. These procedures work by breaking down the connective tissue bands that cause dimpling and stimulating collagen production in the dermis to improve skin elasticity. While these methods may be more effective, they are often expensive, require multiple sessions to achieve results – and aren’t without risk.

Maintaining a healthy diet, drinking lots of water, and regular physical activity can help improve the overall appearance of the skin and reduce the visibility of cellulite. Losing weight and strengthening the muscles in the legs, buttocks and abdomen may make cellulite less noticeable, but it won’t make it disappear altogether.

The bottom line, though, is that cellulite does not need to be treated. It’s a normal anatomical variation that’s been transformed into a condition driving a lucrative market for cures that don’t exist.

My top expert advice in the run up to summer? Be wary of claims from cosmetic companies and save your money.

The Conversation has approached the Lemme Live brand for comment.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Princess Diana's brother shares "immensely sad" personal news

Princess Diana's younger brother Charles Spencer has shared that he and his wife are divorcing after 13 years of marriage.

The Earl's relationship with his wife, Karen Gordon, reportedly broke down while Spencer was writing his harrowing memoir which detailed the physical and sexual abuse he suffered at boarding school.

Revealing the split to the Mail on Sunday, the 60-year-old said, "It is immensely sad."

"I just want to devote myself to all my children, and to my grandchildren, and I wish Karen every happiness in the future."

Spencer and Gordon, a Canadian philanthropist, first met on a blind date at a restaurant in Los Angeles in 2010, and got married just one year later in June 2011 on the Althorp estate, where Princess Diana is buried.

The couple share a 12-year-old daughter named Charlotte Diana, while Spencer also has four children from his previous marriage to his first wife, Victoria Lockwood, and two children with his second wife, Caroline Freud.

Karen was notably absent at events held at Althorp and Spencer House in London in mid-March to launch the Earl's tell-all book, A Very Private School.

Charles Spencer told the Mail on Sunday that the five years of work on his memoir has deeply affected him and led to him undergoing residential treatment for trauma late last year.

In a March interview with People, Spencer opened up about how “supportive” Karen had been throughout his healing journey as he recalled the traumatic details of his childhood.

“I think it was very challenging for her to have a husband going through what was essentially four and a half years of the most profound therapy with very difficult undertones to it. And she supported the idea of me doing it,” he said.

“I think she always hoped I would come out happier and healthier and that seems to be the case very much. So, I’m grateful to have her standing by me while I went through this, what I now realise was an essential process.”

Princess Diana's brother reveals tragic secret

Charles Spencer has bravely detailed the alleged sexual abuse he experienced as a child.

The younger brother of Princess Diana, now 59, initially made the revelation that he was abused as a child while in boarding school when he was 42.

Now, the 9th Earl Spencer is recalling the alleged trauma in his new memoir A Very Private School, and the first moment he told anyone about the abuse he experienced.

“I was doing a 10-day course of very deep introspection and therapy,” he told Fox News Digital.

“My therapist said to each of us, ‘Whisper to me one secret you’d never told anyone.’ I whispered to him that I was sexually abused as a child by an adult.

"And I remember him looking so shocked, and he had heard it all. Afterwards, he took me aside and said, ‘This is very serious stuff.’”

He added that at that stage, he already had children, and having kids of his own made him realise how devastating his experience was.

“I suddenly put it into context. What if one of my children of either gender had been subjected to this as an 11-year-old? It made my blood boil," he said.

"I then started to allow myself to feel the full devastation of what had happened to me.”

Spencer was eight when he was enrolled at Maidwell Hall, an elite English boarding school, and he claimed that it didn't take long for him to witness and experience incidents of alleged abuse.

He claimed that he was groomed and sexually abused at age 11 by an assistant matron at the school, who was 19 or 20 years old.

“It was a brutal experience,” he claimed in his memoir.

“The headmaster was a sadistic pedophile. He staffed a very small number of teachers in this place who were either … perverted or would never tell tales against him. There wasn’t really anyone to go to.“

He added that the beatings had become "a ritual part of every day," and his parents had no idea the extent of what was going on behind closed doors.

The royal also alleged that one student was whipped so badly he struggled to take off his pants at night because the dried blood and clothing stuck to his skin, and that it took two weeks for him to recover.

Spencer claimed he was allowed to write a letter to his parents once a week, with the messages being supervised so he was unable to tell his parents what was going on.

“We were just left there at the mercy of some really dangerous people,” Spencer alleged.

He said that meeting with other former pupils was what motivated him to write the new memoir, and revisit the painful memories of his past.

The historian recalled the moment he met another former student, who kept quiet about the abuse he experience because it was so traumatising.

"He told me how he was made to feel worthless every day, how he’d been seriously sexually assaulted as a nine-year-old three times by somebody who was meant to protect him," he recalled.

“I took 10 pages of notes, stopped and said, ‘This is too terrible — I can’t tell this story.’ He reached across, grabbed my arm and said, ‘Somebody has to do it – it’s got to be you.’ That convinced me, the truth needed to be shared with the world.”

The 9th Earl also said that he is undergoing “a very effective” post-traumatic stress disorder treatment, as well as Tai Chi and breathing exercises.

“I’ve got a whole armoury of support techniques to try and get to a better place,” he shared.

Image: Getty

The US just returned to the Moon after more than 50 years. How big a deal is it, really?

David Flannery, Queensland University of Technology

In the few short years since the COVID pandemic changed our world, China, Japan and India have all successfully landed on the Moon.

Many more robotic missions have flown past the Moon, entered lunar orbit, or crashed into it in the past five years. This includes spacecraft developed by South Korea, the United Arab Emirates, and an Israeli not-for-profit organisation.

Late last week, the American company Intuitive Machines, in collaboration with NASA, celebrated “America’s return to the Moon” with a successful landing of its Odysseus spacecraft.

Recent Chinese-built sample return missions are far more complex than this project. And didn’t NASA ferry a dozen humans to the Moon back when microwaves were cutting-edge technology? So what is different about this mission developed by a US company?

Back to the Moon

The recent Odysseus landing stands out for two reasons. For starters, this is the first time a US-built spacecraft has landed – not crashed – on the Moon for over 50 years.

Secondly, and far more significantly, this is the first time a private company has pulled off a successful delivery of cargo to the Moon’s surface.

NASA has lately focused on destinations beyond the Earth–Moon system, including Mars. But with its Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program, it has also funded US private industry to develop Moon landing concepts, hoping to reduce the delivery costs of lunar payloads and allow NASA engineers to focus on other challenges.

Working with NASA, Intuitive Machines selected a landing site about 300 kilometres from the lunar south pole. Among other challenges, landing here requires entering a polar orbit around the Moon, which consumes additional fuel.

At this latitude, the land is heavily cratered and dotted with long shadows. This makes it challenging for autonomous landing systems to find a safe spot for a touchdown.

NASA spent about US$118 million (A$180 million) to land six scientific payloads on Odysseus. This is relatively cheap. Using low-cost lunar landers, NASA will have an efficient way to test new space hardware that may then be flown on other Moon missions or farther afield.

Ten minutes of silence

One of the technology tests on the Odysseus lander, NASA’s Navigation Doppler Lidar experiment or NDL, appears to have proved crucial to the lander’s success.

As the lander neared the surface, the company realised its navigation systems had a problem. NASA’s NDL experiment is serendipitously designed to test precision landing techniques for future missions. It seems that at the last second, engineers bodged together a solution that involved feeding necessary data from NDL to the lander.

Ten minutes of silence followed before a weak signal was detected from Odysseus. Applause thundered through the mission control room. NASA’s administrator released a video congratulating everyone for returning America to the Moon.

It has since become clear the lander is not oriented perfectly upright. The solar panels are generating sufficient power and the team is slowly receiving the first images from the surface.

However, it’s likely Odysseus partially toppled over upon landing. Fortunately, at the time of writing, it seems most of the science payload may yet be deployed as it’s on the side of the lander facing upwards. The unlucky payload element facing downwards is a privately contributed artwork connected to NFTs.

The lander is now likely to survive for at least a week before the Sun sets on the landing site and a dark, frigid lunar night turns it into another museum piece of human technology frozen in the lunar regolith.

Win some, lose some

NASA’s commercial approach to stimulating low-cost payload services all but guarantees some failures. But eventually NASA hopes that several commercial launch and landing providers will emerge from the program, along with a few learning experiences.

The know-how accumulated at organisations operating hardware in space is at least as important as the development of the hardware itself.

The market for commercial lunar payloads remains unclear. Possibly, once the novelty wears off and brands are no longer able to generate buzz by, for example, sending a piece of outdoor clothing to the Moon, this source of funding may dwindle.

However, just as today, civil space agencies and taxpayers will continue to fund space exploration to address shared science goals.

Ideally, commercial providers will offer NASA an efficient method for testing key technologies needed for its schedule of upcoming scientific robotic missions, as well as human spaceflight in the Artemis program. Australia would also have the opportunity to test hardware at a reduced price.

It’s worth noting that US budgetary issues, funding cuts and subsequent lay-offs do threaten these ambitions.

Meanwhile, in Australia, we may have nothing to launch anyway. We continue to spend less than the OECD average on scientific research, and only a few Australian universities – who traditionally lead such efforts – have received funding provided by the Australian Space Agency.

If we do support planetary science and space exploration in the future, Australians will need to decide if we want to allocate our limited resources, competing with NASA and US private industry, to supply launch, landing and robotic services to the global space industry.

Alternatively, we could leverage these lower-cost payload providers to develop our own scientific space program, and locally developed space technologies associated with benefits to the knowledge economy, education and national security.

David Flannery, Planetary Scientist, Queensland University of Technology

This article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license. Bride sparks feud for banning her niece from her big day

A bride-to-be has sparked a feud for deciding to ban her sister’s “loud and distracting” toddler from her wedding ceremony, with the bride asking social media users for advice.

The bride was only weeks away from her intimate destination wedding, which included a guest list of only a few friends and close family.

After being met with a difficult decision, the bride took to Reddit to share how a massive family feud had erupted in the weeks before the big day.

“My sister is bringing her one-year-old toddler. The child is more than welcome — she’s part of the family and we want her there as part of the day,” she began.

“However, as she’s still very young (and very loud at times), I’ve asked that somebody takes her out during the ceremony if she’s being distracting, shouting and babbling loudly.”

“I know that this will probably happen as she’s constantly chatting loudly and is never quiet.”

“But it’s only for half an hour and she can be as loud as she likes for the rest of the day.”

“I just want everybody to be able to focus on the ceremony and I don’t want the distraction.”

The bride said she was worried about sounding selfish, but then admitted that she was allowed to be selfish on her big day, and wanted all eyes on her and the groom.

“We want everyone to be able to enjoy them and, to be honest, we want the guests’ attention focused on us,” she said.

However, after the bride told her sister of the plans, things didn’t go down well.

“My sister has told me I’m being an a****** for ‘excluding’ my niece from the ceremony and therefore by default ‘excluding’ my brother-in-law who will be the one to take her out,” the bride said.

“She says that I’m asking him and the one-year-old to go all that way just for the evening meal as they will miss the ceremony and that the toddler will most likely miss that too as it will be after bedtime.”

“I’ve told her that there’s a whole afternoon of relaxing things going on — photos, cake, a little walk outside and late lunch that they will be part of but apparently she’s still really annoyed with me.”

The bride says her sister is now “threatening” to attend the wedding alone, leaving her partner and their daughter at home.

“We’ve called her bluff and said if that’s what she wants to do then we understand,” she said.

“To be honest, she’s p***ing us off so much that we’d be fine with all three of them not coming at this point.”

“I don’t think that I’m asking anything unreasonable.”

“All I want is a peaceful, relaxed ceremony where we can all focus on what’s going on without a toddler babbling away.

“Also, to be honest, even if this WAS an unreasonable ask, surely as it’s my wedding day then it’s up to me? Isn’t it the one day of my life when I can do literally anything I want?”

The post was quickly met with hundreds of comments, with most people flocking to the bride’s defence.

One person wrote, “This is basic event etiquette, but it seems like sis cannot be relied on to follow basic etiquette - or even asked to do so without herself acting like a toddler.”

Another suggested: “Removing a disruptive baby from a formal event would be normal etiquette, but if you specifically had to ask in advance, I’ll guess she’s got a history of not doing so.”

“Your wedding, your rules. You could have gone completely child-free, all you asked was for the common courtesy of taking her outside if she got noisy.”

It was clear that Rebel had put her heart and soul into making this day special for her little girl.

Rebel's Instagram post captured the essence of the day perfectly. In a touching picture, she held Royce in a chapel, presumably her christening, and wrote, "Happy 1st birthday baby." It was a heartfelt message that beautifully expressed the love and affection she felt for her daughter.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Rebel Wilson (@rebelwilson)

And, of course, it wasn't just Rebel who was there to make the day magical. Her fiancée and clothing designer, Ramona Agruma, was by her side, capturing the moments with even more love. In her captions, Ramona used endearments like "my love" and "princess," showing her affection for Royce and the happiness she felt being part of this special day.

We couldn't help but smile when watching the videos of the celebration. In one clip, Rebel and Ramona cried out "Happy Birthday, Roycie!" ... and the one-year-old responded with clapping hands, surrounded by pink balloons and presents. It was a moment of pure delight, capturing the innocence and joy of childhood.

Although Wilson's work often keeps her in the United States, her heart remains in her native Australia. Currently, she is in Sydney directing her first movie, The Deb, and she made sure her family was with her during this exciting journey.

In a world filled with uncertainty and challenges, Wilson surprised everyone last year by sharing the news that she had become a mom through a surrogate. She expressed her overwhelming pride and love for her daughter, describing her as a "beautiful miracle". She thanked everyone who had been a part of her journey and gave a special acknowledgment to her surrogate, who had carried and birthed Royce with grace and care.

Rebel concluded by saying, "Thank you for helping me start my own family, it's an amazing gift. The BEST gift!! I am ready to give little Roycie all the love imaginable." And that love was evident in every moment of Royce's first birthday celebration.

Images: Instagram

"My brother and I are safe and alive": Lil Tay speaks out

Rising to online stardom at the tender age of nine, rapper Lil Tay, the child prodigy, has defied widespread reports of her demise, as confirmed by her recent statement following a death announcement that appeared on her official Instagram page.

Speaking to TMZ, the 14-year-old social media sensation expressed her relief, saying: "I want to make it clear that my brother and I are safe and alive, but I'm completely heartbroken, and struggling to even find the right words to say.

"It's been a very traumatising 24 hours. All day yesterday I was bombarded with endless heartbreaking and tearful phone calls from loved ones – all while trying to sort out this mess."

Those past 24 hours have certainly been harrowing for Lil Tay, having to deal with a barrage of anguished and tearful phone calls from concerned relatives.

Lil Tay has come forward to explain that her Instagram account, which initially held 3.3 million followers and now exceeds 3.5 million, was subjected to a hack before the now-deleted misleading announcement was posted.

"My Instagram account was compromised by a 3rd party and used to spread jarring misinformation and rumours regarding me, to the point that even my name was wrong. My legal name is Tay Tian, not 'Claire Hope'."

Early on the morning of Thursday August 10, a message surfaced on the official Instagram account, proclaiming the "sudden and tragic" passing of the artist – the first post to surface since 2018.

In the heartfelt message, it was conveyed, "Words fail to capture the insurmountable void and inexpressible anguish. This outcome took us by complete surprise, leaving us all in a state of disbelief."

"We have no words to express the unbearable loss and indescribably pain. This outcome was entirely unexpected, and has left us all in shock."

It was also claimed in the statement that Jason Tian, Lil Tay's 21-year-old brother, had also died.

"Her bother's passing adds an even more unimaginable depth to our grief," the statement continued. "During this time of immense sorrow, we kindly ask for privacy as we grieve this overwhelming loss, as the circumstances surrounding [Lil Tay] and her brother's passing are still under investigation."

"[Lil Tay] will forever remain in our hearts, her absence leaving an irreplaceable void that will be felt by all who knew and loved her."

Following the announcement, Variety initially reported Lil Tay's management as confirming her demise. Nonetheless, Insider revealed that Lil Tay's father, Christopher Hope, refrained from commenting on the Instagram post and declined to address queries regarding her current state.

During her brief yet impactful three-month presence in the social media landscape, Lil Tay found herself entangled in various controversies, most notably offering an apology after employing a racial slur in one of her videos.

Yet, as swiftly as her rise to virtual stardom unfolded, Lil Tay faded from view. Lil Tay's ultimate Instagram post before the now-deleted death notice emerged on June 19, 2018. This post was a tribute to the late rapper XXXTentacion, who tragically lost his life at 20 years old the preceding day.

Image: Instagram

Child star and her brother die at just 14

The family of both rapper Lil Tay, 14, and her brother, Jason Tian, 21, have announced on social media that they have both passed away.

Lil Tay, originally known as Claire Hope, was a musical artist and influencer with an enormous, three-million strong following on Instagram, the same account through which the family shared the statement that she passed away suddenly. Their deaths are currently being investigated, as after the controversial social media star's former manager Harry Tsang called into question the legitimacy of the post - which did not mention a cause of death - as police in both Vancouver and LA report that they have no current record of their passing.

The statement expressed the profound grief and pain the family is experiencing due to this apparent unexpected loss.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Lil Tay (@liltay)

Lil Tay gained prominence on social media in 2018 at the tender age of just nine. She became famous for her orchestrated confrontations and videos where she showcased stacks of money while getting in and out of luxurious sports cars. However, she abruptly disappeared from the social media scene due to contractual and custody disputes.

During that time, she mentioned in an interview that she and her mother, Angela Tian, were legally required to move back to Vancouver from Los Angeles to be with her father, citing a court order. She alleged at the time that her father's motivation was financial.

Her father's spokesperson, Charles Wong, denied these accusations, stating that her father wanted her to maintain a more structured public image and a portion of her earnings to be set aside in a trust fund.

After a prolonged absence from social media, Lil Tay's Instagram account, which was supposedly compromised, posted accusations of abuse against her father and his second wife. In response, her father refuted these claims, expressing heartbreak over the situation and stating that false information had been spread online.

He expressed uncertainty about the hacking of the Instagram account and emphasised the potential legal consequences of the actions taken on the platform.

Images: Instagram

Woman divides internet after cancelling her brother's wedding

A woman has divided the internet after admitting to cancelling her brother's wedding without telling him, after consistently being treated poorly by her future sister-in-law.

The 27-year-old shared that the "extreme" moment came after countless mean comments, wedding planning gone wrong and a selection of financial problems.

Writing on Reddit's "Am I The A**hole?" thread, the woman wanted advice on if she was in the wrong.

The woman explained that her brother, 30, and his fiancée Ella, 28, had been together three years but the two women were never particularly close.

"Honestly, we never got along but I always tried to put up a peaceful front because my brother seemed blissfully happy with her," the poster explained on the online forum.

"Ella was mean to me a lot ... She would make comments about my weight, my makeup, and especially my dog. She hated animals and hated that I would bring my lab, Toast, to my parents or my brothers house."

After her brother popped the question, she was shocked when Ella asked her to be her Maid of Honour, given their turbulent relationship.

Despite this, she agreed to the role, thinking it was the "sisterly" thing to do.

"What I failed to realise when I accepted the role was that to her [Maid Of Honour] meant planning the entire wedding. Like I was booking venues, florists, jazz band, everything," the woman wrote.

"Even worse she expected me to put my MY credit card down for all of it... Every time I asked Ella about it, she would say that it would all be paid back by her parents before the wedding."

It wasn't until three weeks before the wedding that the relationship between the two women took a turn for the worst.

"I asked if she had received the updated receipt of everything owed when she exploded," she said.

"She called me a whole line of terrible names but the one that stuck out was her saying 'What do you need the money for anyway? Your sick dog is dead now'."

"My beautiful Toasty died about a month before this after he fought the bravest battle with cancer. He was my soul dog and I was devastated."

Ella's hurtful comments went a step too far, leading the woman to "immediately called the vendors and cancelled any deposit under my card. Every. Single. One."

"After almost 20 calls, all that was left of her wedding was the dress and the flower arch."

The woman told her brother what she had done, and said she would no longer be attending their wedding if it still went ahead after her revenge plan.

She then ignored calls from her future sister-in-law, forcing her to deal with all the wedding fallout.

Most people took to the comments in support of the woman's "revenge", saying she would have been saddled with footing the bill.

"MOH duties do NOT include planning the whole wedding and they certainly do NOT put down all the deposits and pay for the wedding," one person wrote.

"If you ask me, it sounds 100% like they were going to stiff you for the wedding. I don't believe for a minute her parents were paying for it."

Another wrote, "You didn't cancel the wedding. You extricated yourself from an abusive and exploitative situation. They're still free to marry, on their own thin dime."

While most people supported the woman's actions, there were a handful of comments that believed the woman had gone too far with her revenge, but also agreed her sister-in-law treated her very poorly.

After the original post went viral, the poster shared an update that she is now speaking to her brother again and that the couple didn't make it down the aisle.

They are currently on a "break" with Ella no longer in possession of an engagement ring.
