Dentist slams dangerous “aesthetic” teeth hacks

A dental surgeon has slammed a series of online hacks that show people attempting their own DIY dental work to achieve the perfect smile.

Prominent Queensland dental surgeon Dr Heath Fraser has argued against grim TikTok viral trends that have people trying to whiten and straighten their teeth at home, saying these “tips” can cause serious damage.

Among the worst offenders was a woman who filmed herself filing down her teeth using a nail file and promoted the tactic as a cheap way to get a straight smile.

The bizarre video amassed thousands of views, with copycat users claiming they had also tried the hack and experienced no lasting damage.

Dr Fraser, however, revealed people who filed their teeth could be setting themselves up for “invasive procedures such as fillings, crowns, veneers and even root canal treatment to resolve the erosion issue”.

He described filing teeth as “highly irresponsible” and explained that “once tooth enamel has been removed it is impossible to regenerate”.

“Even when performed in the dental chair by a professional, patients run the risk of eroding their tooth enamel,” he said.

Other problematic “hacks” saw millions of TikTok users exposed to highly dangerous teeth whitening methods involving the use of household cleaners and hydrogen peroxide as a teeth scrub.

Dr Fraser said there were enormous consequences for people who used these products on their teeth, saying they posed “irreversible risks to the health of your teeth”.

Other users were desperate to straighten their teeth, as they shared how they tried using elastic hair bands in place of braces.

Dr Fraser condemned the method, as one video racked up millions of views promoting the use of elastic bands.

“Using elastic bands may work to move your teeth, but not in the aesthetic way you probably desire. The thin, tight elastic bands used by users on social media can penetrate the gum, severely damaging the soft tissue in your mouth which may ultimately lead to serious irreversible damage, including your tooth falling out from the root,” he said.

Dr Fraser reminded people that for any dental work, attending a dentist is always the safest and most effective option.

Christmas wonderland created using thrifty crafting

A Sydney mum has taken her Christmas decorating to another level, using a clever Kmart hack.

Toni Mackie began a collection of miniature Christmas trees in 2016, which soon grew into an extensive pair of villages covering two kitchen benchtops.

She estimates that 90 percent of the villages - originally brightly coloured with red roofs and glitter - came from Kmart.

Toni then spent three nights transforming them into pale pink and white homes dusted with pearl glitter (also sourced from Kmart).

Five years later, Toni is still creating her Christmas villages and has expanded to above her fireplace, as well as Christmas elves donned in a variety of pastel colours.
<blockquote style="background: #FFF; Meet the DIY blogger who thrives on aesthetically-pleasing organisation

When it comes to home organisation, Adelaide blogger Iryna Federico has taken it to the next level.

The blogger has become known for her pastel aesthetics after her dreamy, candy-shop inspired pantry went viral online.

The pantry took her two years to finish, and she even began designing the space “before the builder even broke ground” on the house.

Image: @fromgreatbeginnings / Instagram

“I had our builder remove any shelving and ended up with a blank room. I then found a local cabinet maker here in Adelaide who brought my design to life,” she told Better Homes and Gardens.

She then filled the space with various containers and baskets that hold everything from baking ingredients to packets of food.

“I am a firm believer in using big baskets to organise my space,” she said.

“They’re nice and deep which means I can hide all the ugly and messy packaging of items like chips and biscuits, and the space always looks tidy.”

Inside Iryna’s garage. Image: @fromgreatbeginnings / Instagram

Since then, Iryna has given her followers a look inside her incredibly organised freezer, her two children’s wardrobes, laundry, and her garage.

Though her spaces appear luxe and incredibly stylish, Iryna picks up most of her storage gear from Kmart, Target and Ikea.

“I love Kmart for all their little organisation tools that make a nice addition to any space, in particular their three-tier shelves. They lift items from the back and make them easily reachable,” she said.

In her pantry, Iryna’s one pricey indulgence has been on Oxo containers.

“I love them because they are BPA free and completely clear - they seal really well and are very easy to clean,” she said.

“Being fairly pricey individually, I bought mine in bulk sets from Costco and did a bunch of 50 cent surveys to be able to justify the cost to myself.”

But so far, her best purchase has been on Ikea’s $5 spice racks.

“I painted those pink and added my cook books and cooking utensils and it really brought the whole space together,” she added.

Image: @fromgreatbeginnings / Instagram

Since starting her Instagram account in June 2016, Iryna has amassed a following of more than 140,000 people.

Unlike other bloggers who have pursued social media as a career, Iryna also has a day job as a business development manager.

“I’m a business development coordinator at an aerospace engineering company - nothing at allllll to do with organisation,” she wrote on Instagram.

“It’s purely just a side hobby :)”.

Image: @fromgreatbeginnings / Instagram
