<p dir="ltr">Even the silliest of actions have consequences, and sometimes these come in the form of scars that constantly remind us of what we’ve done.</p> <p dir="ltr">When we asked our readers about the dumbest ways they’ve gotten scars, this was made all too clear.</p> <p dir="ltr">From wielding axes while barefoot to getting hurt in rock fights - all while figuring out how to explain just what happened to your mum - here are some of the best responses we received.</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>Jenni Garnham</strong> - Riding my bike looking to see what (was) wrong with the pedals and my head went through a caravan window. Got a small scar under my chin.</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>Jo Bolland</strong> - Teasing a boy in primary school on the way home, he turned around &amp; threw a big stone which hit me on the forehead. I called in at the chemists and he put a bandage on it before I dared go home.</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>Susanne Farmer</strong> - Trying to take a hanging spade off the wall, it fell and slashed my face. Still bear the scar to this day.</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>Murray Legro</strong> - Rock fight with my brother. I was hiding behind a corrugated iron sheet looking through it. Brother threw a rock (that) hit the iron which caused the hole to hit me across the top of the eyebrow. Much bleeding and working out what to say to Mum.</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>Neil Whitworth</strong> - When I was a kid, chopping wood with an axe &amp; no shoes on. Axe bounced off the wood into the side of my foot.</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>Abi Secomb Isabel Jones</strong> - As a kid trying to light a candy cigarette! It melted and burnt my knee - I still have the scar almost 60 years later.</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>Diane Christiansen</strong> - Fainted while sitting on the toilet. Hit the shower base! 20 stitches later as the cut was down to the bare bone!</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>Lavonne Pranger</strong> - Trying to walk in my mum’s high heels when I was 5. Had to get stitches and my dad gave me 50 cents for not crying.</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>Carol Madan</strong> - Thinking I could ride our steer, no didn’t work, cut on my chin when I hit his horns.</p> <p dir="ltr"><strong>Kim Reilly</strong> - Running on the verandah when wet. Couldn’t stop. Ran into glass door. Nice scar on my wrist. Mum said don’t run on the verandah. Probably should have listened. Young boy who saved his sister is "proud" of his scars

<p>The seven-year-old boy from Cheyenne, Wyoming, in the US, was hailed as a hero last year when he jumped in front of his younger sister to save her from being attacked by a German Shepherd.</p> <p>Called Bridger Walker, the boy says he’s “proud” of his scars and at the time, he explained his actions by saying: “If someone had to die, I thought it should be me.”</p> <p>Bridger needed 90 stitches for the damage to his face and he’s since undergone multiple procedures, some pro bono, on his face, which has reduced the scarring, the <em>New York Post</em> reports.</p> <p>His dad, Robert, told <em>People</em><br />magazine that Bridger is still as humble a year later: My wife and I asked him, ‘Do you want it to go away?’ And he said, ‘I don’t want it to go all the way away’,” the father of five said.</p> <p>“Bridger views his scar as something to be proud of, but he also doesn’t see it as being representative of his brave act. He just perceives it as, ‘I was a brother and that’s what brothers do’. It’s a reminder that his sister didn’t get hurt, and that she is okay.”</p> <p>Celebrities from around the world — including Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo and Brie Larson — as well as strangers, sent Bridger gifts and letters for his act of courage.<br />“It was certainly unexpected when everything went viral,” Robert said. “It is not something we’d ever want to relive, but the light certainly outshone the darkness by exponential degrees.”</p> <p>“Chris Evans, his video was amazing and he sent the shield. Bridger couldn’t have been more delighted,” Robert said. “When he talked to Tom Holland, he was probably the most starstruck because that was a live call so that one certainly left an impression … His emotional recovery was really a worldwide effort and that was so special to us.”</p> <p>Bridger also attracted the attention of New York dermatologist, Dr Dhaval Bhanusali, who flew him out and treated him at his office for free.</p> <p>“He gave us so much hope,” said Robert, who said other doctors were pessimistic about how much they could help fix Bridger’s face. “That was kind of our first rainbow after all of this.”</p> <p>When the pandemic made cross-country trips to see Dr Bhanusali difficult, Bridger began seeing a doctor in Utah who also helped repair his scars.</p> <p>All of them have since helped reduce Bridger’s scarring and made him smile and feel optimistic again, his father said.</p> <p><em>Photo: nicolenoelwalker/Instagram</em></p>

Scarred for life: henna tattoo turns young boy's Bali holiday into nightmare

<p>A mother has sent out a warning to those who get henna in Bali: Don’t.</p> <p>Despite being warned of what to do and what not to do in Bali, henna had managed to escape the “do not” list.</p> <p>It was only after a woman’s son got a henna tattoo on their last day in Bali,  but it turned red, itchy, raised and sore a week after returning home.</p> <p>“My 10 year old son got what we thought was a ‘henna tattoo’ on our last day in Bali and it wasn’t until a week later, after we’d returned home, that it started turning red, itchy, raised and sore. It wasn’t henna!” she explained to<span> </span><a rel="noopener" href="https://www.news.com.au/travel/travel-updates/warnings/bali-henna-tattoo-leaves-boy-scarred-for-life/news-story/350899ccdd929314b20f9c52da8a566e" target="_blank">news.com.au</a>.</p> <p>It gets worse, as the family has no idea what the dye was mixed with.</p> <p>“We believe it was black hair dye mixed with … God knows what, as apparently it’s cheaper to purchase and mix with chemicals. It may have been mixed with petrol or kerosene we’ve since learned. Please, be very cautious when considering a henna tattoo, especially for your children.”</p> <p>They’re not the only ones to have an adverse reaction to henna in Bali.</p> <p>“Back in the 90’s I had one done on my ankle....my ankle swelled up like a balloon!!!” one person shared.</p> <p>Another said that the same thing had happened to their husband.</p> <p>“This happened to my husband... terrible experience for him. It’s will get worse before it gets better I am sorry to say. It won’t scar for life - use bio oil when it stops blistering and weeping. My husband has no scar.”</p> <p>Others said that it could take a while for the damage to heal.</p> <p>“It took 6 months for my son’s arm to heal from a bad Bali tattoo,” one person explained.</p>

Passenger left “scarred” by in-flight accident

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">An Australian woman is suing Hawaiian Airlines after an incident involving “scalding hot” tea landed on her lap due to an airline hostess’ mistake.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Dimity Plaister, 47, from the Gold Coast, was flying from Brisbane to Honolulu for a ten-day holiday in April, 2017.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">However, as she was settling down and preparing for the long flight, an airline hostess accidentally knocked the cardboard cup of tea off Ms Plaister’s tray table whilst passing a carton of milk.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The black tea landed on her lap, burning her skin and saturating her clothes.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Plaister lodged a statement of claims in the Federal Court in Brisbane, claiming that the incident left her with burns to her hip, thigh and buttocks, permanent scarring as well as an aggravation of anxiety and depression. </span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">According to court documents, Plaister immediately told cabin crew what had happened but was not “offered medical treatment or assistance by cabin crew to dry her lap or ease her pain”.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“As a result of the incident, the applicant suffered burns to her hip, thigh and buttocks as well as psychological injury,” the statement of claim read.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Ms Plaister was unable to enjoy her 10-day booked and paid-for holiday in Honolulu due to her symptoms and the restrictions arising from the injuries she sustained.”</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">She is claiming an unspecified amount of damages from the airline under the Montreal Convention, which is the global treaty that governs the liability of airlines to passengers on international flights.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Hawaiian Airlines revealed their thoughts in a statement to </span><a href="https://www.news.com.au/travel/travel-updates/australian-woman-sues-hawaiian-airlines-after-scalding-hot-tea-lands-in-her-lap/news-story/67afe2ae480de4c0c9b608f4d05fdb04"><span style="font-weight: 400;">news.com.au</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">, saying that they’re “disappointed” the matter has gone to court. </span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“We won’t be commenting on specifics as this matter is in legal process. This was an unfortunate incident which we have investigated internally,” the airline said in a statement.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“We were disappointed to learn of this court case as we are satisfied that appropriate procedures were followed on board. We also continually review our safety procedures against international airline industry standards to ensure the in-flight safety of our passengers.”</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Travel law solicitor Sean Sweeny, from Shine Lawyers, has said that these kinds of incidents are becoming more common.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">He told </span><a href="https://www.news.com.au/travel/travel-updates/australian-woman-sues-hawaiian-airlines-after-scalding-hot-tea-lands-in-her-lap/news-story/67afe2ae480de4c0c9b608f4d05fdb04"><span style="font-weight: 400;">news.com.au</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">: </span><span style="font-weight: 400;">“We are receiving a rising number of inquiries from travellers with scalding injuries, which is a genuine problem in the airline industry,” Mr Sweeney explained. </span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Airline carriers are required to ensure the safety and wellbeing of their passengers on board and should be taking proactive steps to stop burns being sustained in flight.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“We welcome discussion by airlines around steps which might be taken to further protect the safety of those on board.”</span></p>

The reason why you’ll never see Duchess Kate wear her hair up

<p>She’s known for her signature long luscious locks, but there’s actually a reason why the Duchess of Cambridge rarely wears her hair up. And it’s not for style reasons either.</p> <p>Kate wears her hair out to hide a large scar that runs down the side of her hair. News</a></em> that the scar was not a hair extension track as had been speculated at the time, but it was the result of a childhood injury.</p> <p>“The scar is related to a childhood operation,” the Palace said in a statement, but no further information was provided.</p>

Mum shaves head to match her daughter's brain surgery scar

<p>A mum has shown support for her daughter, who is battling cancer, in a truly heart-warming way – getting a haircut to match her little one's brain surgery scar.</p> <p>Faith May, has just undergone surgery to remove a brain tumour that was pushing on her optic nerve and destroying her pituitary gland.</p> <p>Love What Matters shared a post about her journey to their Facebook page. It reads: " Every superhero has a side kick who picks them up, dusts them off and makes them feel stronger than ever."</p> <p>Faith was feeling a little down when she noticed that her doctors had to shave some of her hair during the procedure.</p> <p>"In true sidekick fashion," the post continues, "Faith's mom, Jamie Dawn Beckstead, went home during a shift swap and came back looking just like Faith!"</p> <p>And that smile says it all.</p> <p>In a similar show of support, earlier this year, <a href="http://www.stuff.co.nz/life-style/parenting/big-kids/81326346/dad-gets-tattoo-to-match-sons-cancer-scar"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Kansas father Josh Marshall got a tattoo to match his eight-year-old son Gabriel's brain surgery scar</strong></span>.</a> After confiding in his dad that the scar made him feel like a "monster", Marshall wanted to help boost Gabriel's confidence.</p> <p>"I told him if people wanted to stare, they could stare at both of us," he said.</p> <p>What an amazing example of wonderful parenting.</p> <p><em>Written by Ariane Beeston. Cancer survivors prove scars are beautiful

<p>After 22-year-old Jasmine Gailer’s surgery to remove her osteosarcoma left her with a 30cm-long scar on her leg, she set herself a mission – to prove that scars were beautiful.</p> <p>“My whole body image had changed and I was focused on hiding my scar,” Gailer told the <a href="http://www.aww.com.au/latest-news/health/im-not-ashamed-of-my-scars-21741?adbsc=social_20160719_63938886&amp;adbid=10153196186363621&amp;adbpl=fb&amp;adbpr=349591763620&amp;adbid=10153949486543621&amp;adbpl=fb&amp;adbpr=349591763620" target="_blank"><em><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Australian Women’s Weekly</span></strong></em></a>. “I was ashamed of it and I was ashamed of my story.”</p> <p>That’s how she came up with the idea for <a href="http://www.scarstories.org/" target="_blank"><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Scar Stories</span></strong></a>, a project to help show the beauty and courage in the scars of cancer survivors, all while raising money for cancer charity CanTeen.</p> <p>Take a look at some of the inspiring images in the gallery above.
