Danish royals recreate iconic Diana Taj Mahal photos

Crown Princess Mary and Crown Prince Frederik have marked the beginning of their India tour with some stunning images that throwback to the late Princess Diana.

The royals began their tour on Sunday, and opted for the Taj Mahal in Agra as their starting point. Specifically, the same bench upon which Princess Diana had posed for photos in 1992.

Perched together on the bench, smiling in the sunshine, Mary and Frederik made for quite the happy pair. A far cry from the solo Diana when her image was captured there.

The Danish couple are not the first to have paid tribute at the site, known to many as ‘Princess Di’s Chair’, with the British Royals having posed in previous years too. Most notably, the Duke and Duchess of Wales made their way there in 2016. And in 2008, Sweden’s Crown Princess Victoria visited the world heritage site, as well as the famous bench.

Mary and Frederik appeared to enjoy their day exploring, with the Danish Royal Family’s Instagram account even sharing some photos taken by the princess.

Despite the sightseeing, the main focus of their trip - their first overseas one of the year - is on India’s “green transition”, and strengthening the relationship between their countries.

They’re set to visit New Delhi and Chennai next, and to lay a wreath at the memorial for Mahatma Gandhi 70 years on from his assassination, with a gala dinner to follow.

Mary’s duties as a patron of the Maternity Foundation will see her visit a hospital, and the couple will enjoy a personal tour of the Presidential Palace and garden from India’s President Droupadi Murmu. Chennai will have them for the third and final day of their visit.

Whether or not the couple will share any more of their own pictures from the trip remains to be seen, but fans of the family have been delighted with Mary’s selection so far, taking to Instagram to thank the royals, and to wish them well on the rest of their journey.

“How beautiful - thank you for taking us,” wrote one.

“Beautiful pictures,” said one, with many similar comments scattered throughout as they added, “brings back lovely memories of my own visit there.”

“Fantastic! I’d love to see more of HKH Kronprinsesse Mary’s photos,” chimed one.

“Beautiful, brings back memories of my visits to India, such an incredible country. I hope that Her Majesty the Queen is recovering well, she is always in our thoughts and prayers,” wrote another, referencing the back surgery that Queen Margarethe II had the previous week.

Maragarethe has taken a break from her duties, with the palace confirming that she’s in good condition and “stable under the circumstances.”

Images: Getty, Instagram

How to deal with holiday stress, Danish-style

The holidays often involve jubilant gift exchanges, renewed connections with family and friends, and treasured traditions.

But the love and cheer can also be accompanied by a host of stressors – chaotic travel, conflicts over COVID-19 preventive measures, difficult dinner conversations with relatives, and worries about affording and finding holiday gifts.

This stress can worsen your mental and physical health. Research even finds that mortality is higher than normal during the holidays.

How can you best find a balance during the holidays so that you are fulfilled instead of frazzled?

Perhaps you can find balance by taking a few cultural cues from the Danes.

Denmark, despite its winters that can be cold and gloomy, is full of people who consistently rank among the happiest in the world.

As a native Dane and a psychologist, I’ll often point to Danish words that can cultivate well-being. These words can be used at any time of the year, but I think a couple are particularly useful for navigating the stress of the holidays.

Going above and beyond

Understanding the Danish word “overskud” can help you find more balance during a period of joy and competing commitments.

“Overskud” is a noun that roughly means “excess.” In an economic context it means profit, but in everyday speech it’s used to refer to having the energy, willingness or resources to tackle a task or a problem.

Having overskud is generally viewed as a good thing – you might go the extra mile at work, plan an elaborate holiday party, find extra thoughtful presents or volunteer at your child’s school.

Danes sometimes combine the noun with other nouns so that you might say that you can make an “overskuds-breakfast” – a fancy breakfast of omelettes, bacon, coffee and french toast. Or you might be an overskuds-dad – the dad who decorates cookies with his kids and their friends.

Although it might seem a bit like bragging to say one has overskud, Danes react to people describing having overskud with authentic applause and support. After all, who wouldn’t want to have extra energy and bandwidth to tackle life?

Some Danish therapists maintain that having more overskud can lead you to experience more contentment, calm and presence.

Your energy isn’t boundless

And yet the holidays can sometimes demand overskud in a number of different areas: Food should be healthy but also fit everyone’s preferences and expectations. Presents should be thoughtful and affordable. Elaborate decorations must come up and go down.

How do you balance it all?

Any psychologist will tell you that maintaining healthy boundaries is associated with better mental health.

Importantly, the word overskud is also used to clearly communicate when people cannot tackle an event, task or obligation.

Instead of saying “I’m swamped,” a Dane might say they don’t have enough “overskud” to go to a party or meet for a glass of gløgg, a mulled Christmas wine. It’s basically a shorthand way to say, in a nonjudgmental way, that something sounds like fun, and you would love to do it, but you simply don’t have the energy.

Danes also use a verb that’s related to overskud, which is a noun. They will say that they cannot “overskue” something – organizing a family holiday event, planning a trip or deep-cleaning the house.

Often, activities that are meant to be fun and invigorating, like going to a holiday party on a weeknight or buying presents for a fundraiser, still require a fair amount of effort. If your store of energy is empty and you’d rather just stay home in your PJs, you might say “I just cannot overskue doing it.”

Essentially, the Danes use the words overskud and overskue to say, “No,” and there’s an unspoken understanding that it’s nothing personal. Saying “no” to some things will give you the time and energy to say “yes” to others, so you can tackle the holidays with vigor and cheer – and be that overskud party planner, cookie decorator or gift giver, should you wish to do so.

The importance of ‘pyt’

People might want their vision for the holidays to go off without a hitch. But reality often smacks people in the face: rude strangers, long lines, decoration disasters, out-of-stock toys, piles of dirty dishes, screaming children and resentful relatives.

You can practice letting go of holiday-related frustrations by simply saying the Danish word “pyt,” which is pronounced like “pid.”

Pyt is similar to saying “oh, well” or “stuff happens” and is used to let go of minor frustrations, hassles or mistakes. Danes might say about their own behavior “pyt, I didn’t do a great job wrapping that present.” Or they might say “pyt” when they sense someone else’s disappointment: “pyt, those cookies do look a bit funny, but they’re still delicious.”

Pyt is about accepting that things won’t go exactly as planned, and embracing that fact.

Don’t let the pressure of a perfect Christmas make you crack. alacatr/E+ via Getty Images

Having very high personal standards is a predictor of poor coping skills and a poor ability to deal with daily stressors. Moreover, stress can be mitigated by accepting imperfection as a healthy and normal part of life.

Another way to get to pyt is to focus on what really counts. Is this long line at the mall really worth ruining your day? Or is it a minor annoyance that will soon be forgotten?

Perhaps you can take a moment while waiting to think about some of the things you’re thankful for or remind yourself that you’re OK. Research shows that self-reflection and self-compassion together are particularly effective in reducing stress. Moreover, self-compassion can lead to acceptance of both your own and other people’s flaws.

One of the benefits of holiday stress – compared to unexpected stress – is that you can anticipate it.

You’ve been here before. If you don’t try to do it all and don’t expect everything to go according to plan, you may just end up having your best holiday yet.

Writen by Marie Helweg-Larsen. Wild allegations suggest Prince Frederik's brother has a "secret crush" on Princess Mary

The feud between Prince Frederik and his younger brother Prince Joachim has made headlines after wild allegations have suggested Joachim has been harbouring a secret crush on his sister-in-law, Princess Mary.

The rumours began when Spanish magazine Vanitatis El Confidencial reported that Joachim had drunkenly tried to kiss the princess.

“With obvious signs of drunkenness, it seems that the youngest son of Queen Margrethe tried to stamp his lips on his sister-in-law’s mouth,” a source told the publication.

“[Mary] got as out of the way as she could and with an unperturbed smile, while [Joachim’s wife] Marie witnessed the embarrassing moment.”

The Spanish magazine went on to allege that Joachim was “deeply in love” with Mary, and “it didn’t help that in 2007 he announced his engagement to a French girl [Marie] with the same name and striking physical resemblance.”

If the shocking allegations prove to be true, it may explain the long-simmering tensions between the royal brothers.

"Fred and Joachim haven't been close for years, and this so-called crush on Mary could very much be the reason why," an insider told Woman's Day exclusively.

"It also explains why Mary and Marie have clearly never been very close, despite being sisters-in-law."

Relationships within the Danish royal family were further fractured recently after Queen Margrethe stripped Joachim’s children of their royal titles.

"Joachim is furious about how it's all played out, and blames Fred's ego and his powers of persuasion over their mother," a source told Woman’s Day.

Danish palace cops backlash after announcing slimmed-down monarchy

Tension is said to be running high in the Danish royal family after Prince Joachim claimed his children were given just five days’ notice that they would lose their royal titles following a decision made by their grandmother Queen Margrethe.

“I was given five days' notice to tell them. In May, I was presented with a plan which, by and large, was that when the children each turned 25, it would happen,” Prince Joachim said.

“Now I had only five days to tell them. Athena turns 11 in January.”

In a bombshell announcement, the Danish Royal Household confirmed that Prince Joachim’s children would no longer be using the title of Prince or Princess of Denmark.

Instead, they would be restricted to using the titles of Count, Countess or Comtesse of Monpezat from the start of next year.

“In April 2008, Her Majesty the Queen conferred the titles of Count, Countess and Comtesse of Monpezat on her sons, their spouses and their descendants,” the statement, released yesterday, read.

“In May 2016, it was also announced that His Royal Highness Prince Christian, as the only one of the Queen's grandchildren, is expected to receive an annuity from the state as an adult.

“As a natural extension of this, Her Majesty has decided that with effect from 1 January 2023, the descendants of His Royal Highness Prince Joachim can only use their titles as Count and Countess of Monpezat, as their previous titles as Prince and Princess of Denmark will lapse.

“Prince Joachim's descendants will henceforth have to be addressed as Excellencies.”

It was confirmed that Prince Joachim’s children would still maintain their places in the order of succession, but would be able to live their lives “without being limited by the special considerations and duties that a formal affiliation with the Royal House of Denmark as an institution involves”.

The statement also hinted that the decision was designed to streamline the monarchy, which follows similar sentiments shared by King Charles II and other European royal households.

However, Prince Joachim, the youngest of Margrethe’s two sons, claimed his children were “harmed” by the news and that he was given little notice.

“We are all very sad. It's never fun to see your children being harmed. They are been put in a situation they do not understand,” he told Danish news outlet Ekstra Bladet.

The 53-year-old royal, who is sixth in line to the throne, shares his two eldest sons Nikolai, 23, and Felix, 20, with his first wife Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksberg, and 13-year-old Henrik and 10-year-old Athena with his current wife, Princess Marie.

Alexandra said the news was like a “bolt out of the blue” and that her two sons felt “ostracised” by their family.

“They cannot understand why their identity is being taken away from them,” she told Danish magazine Se og Hør.

A spokesperson for the Countess told another news outlet that Prince Joachim only learnt of his children’s fate from an aide, with claims that Queen Margrethe didn’t speak to her son or grandchildren about the change.

Queen Margrethe, who is celebrating her Golden Jubilee this year, defended the decision at an event in Copenhagen.

“It is a consideration I have had for quite a long time and I think it will be good for them in their future. That is the reason,” she said.

In another statement, the Royal Household supported the Queen’s claims that it had been a long time coming while conceding that there are “many emotions at stake”.

“As the Queen stated yesterday, the decision has been a long time coming,” it read.

“We understand that there are many emotions at stake at the moment, but we hope that the Queen's wish to future-proof the Royal Household will be respected.”

Since the announcement, there have been reports of an “ice-cold air” between the Queen and her grandchildren.

“There is ice-cold air between Queen Margrethe and her grandchildren after she decided that they will lose their titles as prince and princess from the New Year,” Ekstra Bladet reported.

“The news, which has crushed both the four children and their parents, was not delivered by the queen herself.

“They have not been called to Amalienborg for a cold coke and an explanation as to why they must henceforth be addressed as counts and countesses. Not even that far.”

Image: @detdanskekongehus (Instagram)

They each deserve theirs - so do all the others.”

The twins were born in Copenhagen in 2011, and are Frederik and Mary’s youngest children. Their siblings are Prince Christian, 16, and Princess Isabella, 14.

Just days ago, the couple posted to Instagram to announce the cancellation of a gala banquet at Rosenborg Castle on 4 February 2022 to celebrate Mary’s 50th birthday. The statement said that the couple hoped to be able to reschedule the celebrations for later in the year, while on the day, Mary will celebrate privately with family.

The family lives in Copenhagen, at Frederik VIII’s Palace at Amalienborg. Vincent is fourth in line to the throne, while Josephine is fifth, Vincent having been born 26 minutes earlier than his sister.

Image: Danish Royal House

Princess Mary’s heartbreaking confession

Princess Mary has given a heartbreaking speech at the 20th Anniversary of the Children, Youth and Grief Network.

Speaking about her own experience of loss, as well as the universal heartache that comes with the death of a loved one, the Danish Crown Princess opened up in what is considered to be a rare occasion for a royal.

Taking to the Danish royal family's Instagram page to share her emotional words alongside photos from her speech, Mary reflected on how loss shapes us.

"It is difficult, if not impossible, to find meaning in losing someone you love. But what makes sense, and something that can not be taken from us, is all we had with that person," the caption reads in Danish.

"With those words, I began my speech at Children, Youth and Grief's 20th Anniversary yesterday. Of course, for me it was one of the harder talks to hold.

"But to my own surprise, I was more moved than I would have thought. And so it is with grief, it can strike at any time."

The royal has experienced her fair share of loss throughout the years.

Her mother, Henrietta Donaldson died from a heart condition on November 20, 1997, when Mary was just 25 years old.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by DET DANSKE KONGEHUS 🇩🇰 (@detdanskekongehus)

Mary has confessed before that she battled with loneliness after her mother's passing, telling Danish TV and radio station DR: "I felt alone in my pain.

"As if nobody understood what I was going through and I had come to a standstill while the whole world around me kept moving forwards."

Most recently, Mary lost her father-in-law Prince Henrik of Denmark in 2018.

Mary continued in the Instagram caption: "Yesterday was not 'anytime', it was the mark of an organisation that works to help children and young people through their grief and with the belief that life can become whole again, but… in a new way.

"What touched me on the podium yesterday is a little hard to explain. It was not so much about my own loss, but more about the fact that many of us in the room had something special in common.

"We were common about having lost and I could feel the common understanding that loss provides. It does not require words, it is just there."

She went on to say that "hope is the focal point" of the work Children, Young People and Grief does, adding that the volunteers find "meaning in the meaningless".

The royal concluded by saying that she had learned something about hope herself, and how important it is after suffering a deep loss.

"The hope that you can learn to live with the grief as part of life and take the one you have lost with you," she wrote.

A post shared by DET DANSKE KONGEHUS 🇩🇰 (@detdanskekongehus) on Oct 26, 2020 at 9:10am PDT

And Christmas can’t be celebrated without the perfect holiday outfit, and Princess Mary delivered in the style department.

The Princess opted for a full purple ensemble featuring a loose fitting top with a keyhole neckline as she joined guests at Julemaerkehjemmet Liljeborg in Roskilde.

She paired it with a set of wide-legged trousers and kept her hair straight and simple.

View this post on Instagram

Samfundsansvar, bæredygtighed og klima var på programmet, da Hendes Kongelige Højhed Kronprinsessen i dag uddelte CSR Prisen til Arla Foods, A.P.
