"Impunity for macho actions is over": Why the entire Spanish World Cup team has quit

Luis Rubiales, the head of Spanish soccer, has rejected calls for his resignation despite facing widespread backlash for his actions following Spain's Women's World Cup victory.

Rubiales came under fire after he was seen grabbing star player Jenni Hermoso's head and kissing her on the lips during the medal ceremony. The incident has led to a revolt among 56 national team members and condemnation from the government for what they deemed to be "macho actions".

A collective statement, issued through their union, was signed by all 23 members of the winning squad, including Hermoso, as well as 32 other team members. In the statement, they declared their refusal to participate in international matches as long as Rubiales remains at the helm of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF).

Within the same statement, Hermoso refuted Rubiales' assertion that the kiss was consensual (see below for the statement in full). The controversial kiss occurred at the medal ceremony after Spain's victory over England in the World Cup final in Sydney.

Rubiales' elderly mother, Angeles Bejar, has now taken an extreme stance in support of her son, initiating a hunger strike and seeking refuge in a church, citing a perceived "inhumane witch-hunt" against him. In parallel, the regional presidents of the Spanish football federation have called for Rubiales' resignation.

This series of events coincided with Spanish prosecutors' announcement of a preliminary investigation into Rubiales' conduct during the World Cup final, focusing on the kiss with Hermoso. The Spanish national court stated that the investigation would explore whether Rubiales' actions could be considered sexual assault.

Despite facing pressure to step down, Rubiales has resisted these calls and maintained that the kiss was just a “little peck” that was “spontaneous, mutual, euphoric and consensual”. He also claimed that he asked Hermoso if he could kiss her and that she said “OK”.

The Spanish government, lacking the authority to directly remove Rubiales from his position, has sought legal avenues to suspend him using a sports tribunal. Victor Francos, the head of the state-run sports council, emphasised the government's determination to ensure accountability in this matter, comparing it to a Spanish soccer "Me Too" movement.

Criticism of Rubiales' behavior has escalated since Spain's victory, with Acting Labour Minister Yolanda Diaz condemning his actions as "unacceptable." The government has been urged to take swift action against such behaviour and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

“The government must act and take urgent measures: impunity for macho actions is over. Rubiales cannot continue in office,” Diaz wrote on social media.

In response, FIFA initiated disciplinary proceedings against Rubiales, prompted by Hermoso's statement expressing her union's commitment to defending her rights and condemning acts like the one she experienced.

The situation remains tense as Rubiales continues to face demands for his resignation, while he remains defiant and resolute in his position as the head of Spanish soccer.

Hermoso’s full statement:

“After achieving one of the most desired successes of my sports career and after a few days of reflection, I want to wholeheartedly thank my teammates, fans, followers, the media and all of you who have made this dream come true; Your work and unconditional support have been a fundamental part of winning the World Cup.

“In reference to what happened today. Although it is true that for my part I do not want to interfere with the multiple legal processes in progress, I feel compelled to denounce that the words of Mr. Luis Rubiales explaining the unfortunate incident are categorically false and part of the manipulative culture that he himself has generated.

“I clarify that at no time did the conversation to which Mr. Luis Rubiales referred to take place and that, far from it, his kiss was consented. In the same way I want to reiterate as I did at the time that this fact had not been to my liking.

“The situation caused me a shock due to the context of the celebration, and with the passage of time and after delving a little deeper into those first feelings, I feel the need to denounce this fact since I consider that no person, in any area work, sports or social should be a victim of this type of non-consensual behaviour.

“I felt vulnerable and the victim of aggression, an impulsive, sexist, out of place act and without any kind of consent on my part. I just wasn’t respected. I was asked to make a joint statement to take the pressure off the president, but at that moment in my head I only had the idea of enjoying the historic milestone reached together with my teammates.

“For this reason, at all times I informed the RFEF and its different interlocutors, as well as the media and people I trust that I would not make any type of individual or joint statement on this matter, since I understood that, if I did, I would still remove more prominence to such a special moment for my colleagues and me.

“Despite my decision, I have to state that I have been under continuous pressure to come up with a statement that could justify the act of Mr. Luis Rubiales. Not only that, but in different ways and through different people, the RFEF has pressured my environment (family, friends, colleagues, etc.) to give testimony that had little or nothing to do with my feelings.

“It is not up to me to evaluate communication and integrity practices, but I am sure that as the World Champion National Team we do not deserve such a manipulative, hostile and controlling culture. This type of incident joins a long list of situations that we players have been denouncing in recent years, so this fact, in which I have been involved, is just the straw that breaks the camel’s back and what everyone has been able to see, but attitudes like this have been part of the day-to-day life of our team for years.

“For all these reasons, I want to reinforce the position I took from the beginning, considering that I do not have to support the person who has committed this action against my will, without respecting me, at a historic moment for me and for women’s sport. from this country.

“In no case can it be my responsibility to assume the consequences of transmitting something in which I do not believe, which is why I have refused the pressures received. ZERO TOLERANCE with these behaviors. I want to close by making it very clear that although I am the one expressing these words, it is all the players in Spain and the world who have given me the strength to come out with this statement.

“Faced with such a show of disrespect and inability to recognise one’s own mistakes and assume the consequences, I have made the decision not to play for the National Team again as long as the current leaders continue. Thank you all for the messages of support and words of encouragement received. I know I am not alone and thanks to all of you we will get ahead more united. I leave this issue to the people I trust TMJ and FUTPRO and they will continue working on the next steps based on recent events.”

Image: Channel 7

Return of the dream team: Cameron Diaz’s huge announcement

Beloved Hollywood actress Cameron Diaz is set for a massive comeback to our screens after retiring in 2014.

The Charlie’s Angels star will star alongside Jamie Foxx in a Netflix movie called Back in Action.

Foxx announced the exciting news on Twitter in the form of a three-way phone call between himself, Diaz and NFL player Tom Brady.

Brady, who earlier in the year announced his retirement from the game but retracted it a few weeks later, was advising an “anxious” Diaz on how to come back into the spotlight.

Foxx and Diaz have a quick chat where he is asking how she’s feeling, trying to calm her nerves before surprising her with Brady on the other line.

“I was talking to Jamie and he told me you need a few tips on how to un-retire. I’m relatively successful at un-retiring,” Brady says to a laughing Diaz.

“Honestly, exactly what I needed,” Diaz responds.

Cameron I hope you aren’t mad I recorded this, but no turning back now. Had to call in the GOAT to bring back another GOAT. @CameronDiaz and I are BACK IN ACTION - our new movie with @NetflixFilm. I’m not looking to, but will I? I don’t know. I have no idea,” Diaz previously said.

“Maybe, never say never, but I couldn’t imagine being a mum now where I’m at as a mother with my child at her first year to have to be on a movie set that takes 14 hours, 16 hours of my day away from my child.”

Images: Getty

Meet the women who helped Afghanistan’s women's soccer team escape

When the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in August 2021, a goalkeeper for the country’s female soccer team had to make the decision whether she and her teammates should stay in their home country or leave it and their loved ones behind.

Fati, whose name and age have been withheld to protect her family’s identity, played with her teammates for years, representing an Afghanistan where women had more opportunity and freedom - and was free of the Taliban’s rule.

“I accepted that Afghanistan was over,” Fati told the BBC.

“I thought there’s no chance for living, no chance for me to go outside again and fight for my rights. No school, no media, no athletes, nothing. We were like dead bodies in our homes.

“For two weeks I never slept. I was 24 hours with my phone, trying to reach out to someone, anybody for help. All day and all night, awake, texting and searching social media.”

Fati and her teammates managed to escape, thanks to an invisible, international network of women.

Haley Carter, a 37-year-old goalkeeper, former US marine and Afghanistan’s assistant coach from 2016 to 2018, described it as a “little virtual operation running out of WhatsApp”.

“Never underestimate the power of women with smartphones,” she added.

Using WhatsApp and other encrypted messaging apps, Carter was sharing intelligence about the situation in Kabul with other marines and National Security staff in an operation dubbed ‘Digital Dunkirk’.

She had been enlisted to help Fati and the team flee by Khalida Popal, a former national team captain who left Afghanistan in 2011 because of death threats over her involvement in the sport, and has lived in Denmark since.

Khalida Popal knew time was of the essence for Fati and her teammates, and enlisted the help of Haley Carter to secure their escape. Image: Getty Images

With time not on their side, Popal knew Fati and her teammates had to act quickly, with their sporting involvements making them particularly vulnerable to Taliban investigations.

She told the team to delete their social media accounts, burn their soccer gear and bury their trophies - a decision Fati said was hard to do.

“Who wants to burn their jerseys?” she said. “I thought, if I survive, I will make [the achievements] again.”

At the same time, Carter was working to get the team onto a military plane out of Afghanistan at the earliest opportunity.

“Khalida texted all of us saying, ‘girls, be ready to leave the airport together, just one backpack each’,” Fati recalled.

“She said: ‘We can’t tell you that we are even sure that you will go inside the airport. But if you fight, you will survive’.”

When it was time to go, Fati carried as little as possible and wrote Carter’s phone number on her arm in case her phone was stolen or confiscated. Carter also told Fati that they should rotate having their phones on to preserve battery life.

At the airport, they were among thousands who had congregated with the hope of leaving - but for many, the struggle would be in vain.

“If your name was not on a list, or there wasn’t somebody inside the airport coming out to get you, you weren’t going in,” Carter said.

“So we had to work extra hard to make sure that marine counterparts at the gates had their information to make sure that they could get in.”

Carter told Fati to meet “a guy” at the airport’s north gate with a password that would get them in.

When they were turned back, Carter had to recalibrate the plan all the way from Houston.

Meanwhile, Fati decided she and the players would try again at the south gate - though they would have to get past the two Taliban checkpoints in the way.

After being separated from her brother - who was badly beaten - at the first checkpoint and being kicked and hit herself by men with rifles at the second, Popal’s text message gave her the push to keep going forward.

“It was a thing that lighted up that darkness,” Fati said. “Suddenly, there was something telling me to get back up and I started again in a strong way.”

The team regrouped, taking advantage of a moment when the Taliban guards were distracted to make a dash for Australian soldiers at the south entrance.

“There were so many people but we managed to get past the last checkpoint,” Fati said. “We saw the Australian soldiers and shouted phrases like, ‘national team players’, ‘Australia’ and ‘football’.

“They looked at our documents and let us through.”

Along with some Afghan Paralympians, Fati and her teammates boarded a C-130 military transport plane heading to Australia.

“The plane just took off and there was just noise and the fear that we had. Looking around, there were just scared faces,” Fati said.

“I was thinking, you will never be able to see this beautiful place where you made memories and grew up. It’s your last time.”

She sent a photo and message to Carter, reading: “I made it. We made it”.

“I still can’t get my head around what they’ve been through & what they’ve come from but they just turn up to every session, always have a smile on their face”

For @gomvfc coach Hopkins, working with @AfghanWnt’s reminded him why he got into coaching.https://t.co/vf0w0B7y8g pic.twitter.com/mT7rIcRrte

— Sacha Pisani (@Sachk0) May 27, 2022

In February, Fati and her teammates trained together for the first time, after Melbourne Victory provided facilities and coaches. She described the feeling as “amazing” and a source of “new hope” for the team.

“I’ve locked those smiles in my memory. And I thought, I’m successful. We will not be lost,” she said.

Two months later, they played their first match against a local non-league team, though the backs of their jerseys had no names and just numbers out of concern for the safety of their relatives back home.

Though their chances of competing internationally in an official competition requires the backing of the Afghan Football Association and the Taliban, Fati still has hope.

“The goals instead will be for us to make the national teams of Australia or the country that we are in. Still we are Afghans and, somehow, we will be the representatives of our nationality,” Fati said.

Image: Getty Images

How a team of hungry GOATS is helping to fight fires

After the devastating bushfires that ravaged Australia in 2019 and 2020, the RFS is looking to unusual method to prevent history from repeating.

A new tactic adopted by the Rural Fire Service has been to put some furry friends to good use by doing what they do best: eating!

Hungry goats have been given the job of protecting towns that have been identified as an extreme bushfire risk this summer by grazing on all the grass and shrubs.

A herd of bucks and billies have been placed at Clandulla village near Mudgee in NSW's Central West, after being loaned to the area by two local farmers.

They will be grazing on the land in Clandulla for the next two months, eating their way through the foliage that poses a fire risk.

"Goats will eat up shrubs, small tree saplings and eat woody weeds some of your other animals won't," farmer Michael Blewitt said.

While this unique method of containing fires is a first for Australia, the tactic has been used and proven to work in the US, Spain and Portugal.

These goats are expected to clear more than two hectares over the next three weeks, creating a buffer zone to the village of 200 people.

While back burning is an efficient way of clearing fire hazards, it is often dependant on weather conditions, where goats are happy to clear away grass, shrubs and bushes in rain, hail or shine.

Team GB rocked by doping controversy at Tokyo 2020 Olympics

Great Britain's men’s track team is in danger of having their silver medal being stripped, after one of its athletes tested positive for banned substances.

Britain's Olympic 4x100m relay silver medallist Chijindu 'CJ' Ujah has been provisionally suspended for allegedly breaching strict anti-doping rules at the games.

The Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) reported that athlete had returned an Adverse Analytical Finding (AAF) from a test carried during the Olympics in Japan.

The substances detected were Ostarine and S-23, which are both classified by the World Anti-doping Organisation, as they have similar effects to steroids.

The substances have been banned from the Olympics for some time, as they help build muscle and enhance overall sporting performance.

CJ responded to the news of the doping scandal with a cryptic Instagram post that said, “Stay focused… Because truth is madder than fiction.”

CJ is allowed to request independent analysis of the sample to prove his innocence and keep his Olympic title.

If he is found guilty of using performance-enhancing drugs, it could be devastating for his fellow members of the relay team.

Zharnel Hughes, Richard Kilty and Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake will also be at risk of being stripped if the positive is confirmed.

The news comes after three other track and field athletes were suspended during the Games for suspected doping.

Moroccan-born Bahraini 1,500m runner Sadik Mikhou, Georgian shot putter Benik Abramyan and Kenyan sprinter Mark Otieno Odhiambo were listed for using performance-enhancing drugs, and remain under investigation by the AIU.

"WOW!" Beach handball team responds to Pink's amazing offer

Popstar Pink has offered to pay the fines issued to the Norwegian beach handball team for wearing shorts instead of bikini bottoms during a match.

After the match between Norway and Spain last weekend, the European Handball Federal (EHF) handed the Norwegians’ a $240 fine per player for “improper clothing”.

The organisation said the shorts violated the athlete uniform regulations.

The fines, totalling $2410, caused widespread backlash with athletes and celebrities taking to social media to criticise the decision, including Pink.

The popstar even said she was “happy to pay” the fines for the team, and praised them for protesting the “very sexist” uniform rules.

I’m VERY proud of the Norwegian female beach handball team FOR PROTESTING THE VERY SEXIST RULES ABOUT THEIR “uniform”. Thank you so much for the support,” the team wrote.

The ruling also drew criticism from Norway officials, who argue that the womens’ uniform requirements were not practical.

“In 2021, it shouldn’t even be an issue,” Norwegian Volleyball Federation president Eirik Sordahl told national news agency NTB.

While beach volleyball players have not been required to wear bikinis since 2012, rules from the International Handball Federation (IHF) state that “female athletes must wear bikini bottoms” which have a “close fit”, be “cut on an upward angle towards the top of the leg”, and a side depth of 10 centimetres or less.

Male players, on the other hand, are allowed to wear shorts.

Here are the rules for the men’s vs. women’s uniforms. It is so embarrassing,” she said.

“First we were told about a fine of 50 euros ($AUD 80) per person per match, something that would have landed us a fine of about 4,850 euros ($AUD 7760). Australia's only scientist on Wuhan team delivers COVID-19 origin update

Australian scientist Professor Dominic Dwyer believes that COVID-19 started in China and had been circulating around the community much earlier than December 2019.

Dwyer is involved in the inquiry into the origins of COVID-19 and his views have been challenged by the Chinese scientists in the World Health Organisation joint investigation who believe the disease might've been brought into China on frozen food packets.

Dwyer, a microbiologist and infectious disease expert with NSW Health Pathology said that the evidence is "very limited" for an origin outside of China.

He was the only Australian in a 14-strong team working for the World Health Organisation.

WHO experts said last night that COVID-19 most likely appeared in humans after jumping from an animal, dismissing claims that the virus leaked from a Chinese lab.

"I think it started in China, I think the evidence for it starting elsewhere in the world is actually very limited," Professor Dwyer told 9News from hotel quarantine in Sydney.

"There is some evidence but it's not really very good.

"I think it's most likely that it came from a bat. We know that other viruses that are closely related to (COVID-19) are present in bats.

"We know that other viruses like MERS and SARS back in 2003 also came from bats. Now these bats don't respect borders of course so they are present not just in China but in other parts on South East Asia and indeed elsewhere around the world."

#EXCLUSIVE: Aussie scientist Dominic Dwyer has spoken to @9NewsAUS after returning from Wuhan, where he was on the WHO team investigating #COVID19
"I think it started in China. There's clearly a lot of work that needs to be done, not just in China but in the region and elsewhere around the world."

For decades, movie mogul Harvey Weinstein got whatever he wanted, when he wanted it.

That included sex with Hollywood’s biggest names and those who aren’t as well known – even if that meant by force.

But now, the tide has turned as the disgraced Oscar-winning producer was convicted today on two of five sexual assault charges, ending a high profile rape trial in New York.

After five days of deliberation, a jury unanimously agreed that Weinstein was guilty of raping an aspiring actress in a Manhattan hotel room in 2013 and forcibly performing oral sex on another woman, TV and film production assistant Mimi Haleyi, in 2006.

The 67-year-old was convicted of first degree sexual assault and third degree rape. He is facing up to 29 years in prison and will be sentenced on March 11.

The first charge carries a sentence of 5-25 years behind bars with the second carrying a minimum probationary period and a maximum four year jail term.

Speaking to news.com.au, Weinstein’s lawyer Arthur Aidala said that his team will appeal the convictions which he said is “disappointing”.

“Harvey was unbelievably stoic and strong and powerful,” said Mr Aidala.

“The words he said over and over again to me is: ‘I’m innocent, I’m innocent, I’m innocent. How could this happen in America?”

Donna Rutonna, lead defence lawyer told reporters outside court that “the fight is not over”.

“Harvey is very strong. Harvey is unbelievably strong. He took it like a man,” she said.

Meanwhile, a slew of global celebrities took to social media to express their heartfelt reactions to the verdict:

Gratitude to the brave women who’ve testified and to the jury for seeing through the dirty tactics of the defense .we will change the laws in the future so that rape victims are heard and not discredited and so that it’s easier for people to report their rapes
— Rosanna Arquette🌎✌🏼 (@RoArquette) February 24, 2020

off he goes to prison - where he belongs - over 80 women accused him of rape - imagine the total number? #HarveyWeinsteinGUILTY #RAPIST and lets not forget #trumpSEXcrimes #guilty
— ROSIE (@Rosie) February 24, 2020

For the women who testified in this case, and walked through traumatic hell, you did a public service to girls and women everywhere, thank you.#ConvictWeinstein #Guilty
— ashley judd (@AshleyJudd) February 24, 2020

The beginning of #justice. Cricket world reacts to hilarious wedding photo

The cricket world has reacted to a hilarious moment taken on the night of a bride and grooms wedding night.

While marriage is about the celebration of true love, it seems the bride played second fiddle to her husband’s one true passion on their special evening.

Living in America poses its own challenges as Tasleem is forced to watch his favourite sport, cricket, at odd hours in the day, and said that if the opportunity arrives to watch the game, he takes it - even if the sport interrupts what should be the most special day of his life.

The newly married hubby sent a snap of he and his wife to the International Cricket Council (ICC), where he reflected on the moment he came home from his wedding procession to find out Pakistan was playing Australia in the first game of their three-match T20 series at the SCG on the weekend.

As a prolific fan of the game, there was no other option than to sit down with his new wife and watch the match.

“Hello, as a diehard cricket fan, I wanted to submit a photo from my wedding this past weekend,” Tasleem wrote in his letter to the ICC.

“As per tradition, after the completion of the wedding the bride is brought back home for a little traditional welcoming ceremony amongst the close family.

Here's a message we got from a fan in the US 👫#CoupleGoals

You know it's love when ... pic.twitter.com/4YuGImuXjW
— ICC (@ICC) November 6, 2019

“As we came home (around midnight in Detroit, Michigan, USA) the Pakistan vs Australia T20 game was getting underway.

“Over the years residing in North America I’ve stayed up at all sorts of odd hours of night to catch Team Pakistan play.

“Even though it was my wedding night, I wasn’t going to miss this game.”

Australian skipper Aaron French found the post hilarious, and couldn’t help but acknowledge how funny it was he took centre stage during the couple’s wedding.

Haha glad I played such a special part in your day!! 😂😂
Take note @_AmyFinch https://t.co/MbG4YGJad8
— Aaron Finch (@AaronFinch5) November 6, 2019

The cricket world quickly reacted to the sweet image, with the post garnering in over 10,000 likes.

One Twitter user and die hard cricket fan couldn’t help but compare the hilarious photo to one taken on his parent’s wedding night in 1983.

“Not quite the same but can't resist sharing. Place: Mumbai. These are guests at my parents' wedding on 30 Oct 1983, huddled around a radio, listening to the second day's play of the Kotla test match against,” the user wrote.

Not quite the same but can't resist sharing.
Place: Mumbai. Dude first go and check out the schedule as match is more important than any other event of life!”

Unfortunately for Tasleem, the match ended on a bad note for Pakistan as the game was called off due to rain and the country went on to lose game two of the series in Canberra.

Mother and daughter team are close to discovering a vaccine for Alzheimer's

A mother and daughter have worked together to start a biotech company that has developed what could be the world’s first Alzheimer’s vaccine.

Dr. Chang Yi Wang, Ph.D. is a prolific bio-inventor who teamed up with her daughter Mei Mei Hu and son-in-law Louis Reese to create United Neuroscience four years ago.

Mei Mei urged her mother to focus all of her efforts on working on an Alzheimer’s vaccine through the company.

In January, 2019, United Neuroscience Inc announced the first promising results from a pilot clinical trial on an Alzheimer’s vaccine called UB-311 in 42 human patients.

“We were able to generate some antibodies in all patients, which is unusual for vaccines,” Yi tells Wired.

“We’re talking about almost a 100 percent response rate. So far, we have seen an improvement in three out of three measurements of cognitive performance for patients with mild Alzheimer’s disease.”

The vaccine contains synthetic versions of amino acid chains that trigger the antibodies to attack Alzheimer’s protein in the blood.

What makes this vaccine different is that it attacks the protein without any side effects.

According to Yi’s research team, the vaccine can delay the onset of the disease by five years.

“You’d want to see larger numbers, but this looks like a beneficial treatment,” Aston University Research Centre for Healthy Ageing director James Brown was quoted as saying, according to NextShark.

“This looks like a silver bullet that can arrest or improve symptoms and, if it passes the next phase, it could be the best chance we’ve got.”

Over-60s team embark on 16,000km charity rally to Mongolia

Five kiwi "old buggers" are taking part in a 40-day trip across 22 countries, traversing 16,000km from Belgium to Mongolia for charity.

The 'Kiwi Nomads', a group of five childhood friends from Christchurch, are preparing for the annual charity rally across Europe which kicks off in July.

All in their 60s, 'Kiwi Nomads' Jim Davis, Phil Trengrove, Graeme Blair, Mike Trengrove, and Terence Coakley will be driving to Mongolia the long way – 16,000km overland from Belgium through Eastern Europe, south to the Black Sea region into Central Asia to the Mongol capital of Ulaanabaatar.

The men on the adventure drive are raising money for rally organiser UK charity Go Help for medical and educational projects in Mongolia and for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand.

"It started as a boys adventure but it's morphed into a charitable venture," said Davis.

"We're going about one-third of the way around the planet.

The Kiwi Nomads' vehicles for their trip from the United Kingdom to Mongolia.

"It's going to be a bit of an adventure... We're all looking forward to it."

All Cantabrians, except Phil Trengrove who now lives in Sydney, the group leaves for London in late June, starting the rally alongside 13 other teams from all over the world on July 1.

Another New Zealand team will be taking on the challenge this year, team Kiwi Traveller, made up of three young Canterbury men Scotty Bamford, Ben Irwin and Mitchell Pannett raising money for Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue.

"The only reason we're all doing this is we're a bit weird... it's not that we're hard-out adventurers, we just don't mind roughing it," Davis said.

Davis learned about the rally from a thrill-seeker friend and knew his childhood mates would be keen to get involved.

"We've all known each other for so long, I knew they'd be into this," Davis said.

Charity Rallies' rally commander Jo Meade said the Kiwi Nomads were the oldest men on the trip this year, and said every year Kiwis and Australians supported the rally.

The group raised around $40,000 for their rally vehicles - a Toyota Hilux and an Ambulance truck - which will be donated at the end of the rally.

The group was donated their return flights by Singapore Airlines, QV health insurance, a drone for filming and data coverage to keep their social media up-to-date.

"We've had a truck load of support we didn't expect," Davis said.

To complete the "marathon-type event" in the planned 40 days, the group needs to be travelling around 400km a day.

"It is an adventure. While it will be fun, it won't be easy.

"If you think about it, we've got to drive from Christchurch to Dunedin each day and do it for 40 days, except you're not on roads like in Christchurch.

"By the time we've finished, we'll need a holiday," Davis said.

Davis said the group chose to support the Prostate Cancer Foundation because "it's about five old men aligning themselves with a charity that any one of us might need some day."

Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand chief executive officer Graeme Woodside said one in eight Kiwi men will get prostate cancer, and fundraising efforts such as this rally allowed them to continue their work.

"It's great these guys are doing this rally and have chosen to support us. We really value that," he said.

"Whatever they raise is money we would use to increase awareness of prostate cancer and to support the men with prostate cancer."

Written by Monique Steele.
