"One people, one family": King Charles breaks silence after cancer diagnosis

Amidst concerns and heartfelt wishes, King Charles III has released a statement following his shocking cancer diagnosis.

In his first public comments since beginning his treatment, the monarch, while recuperating at Sandringham, expressed his sincere regrets for not being able to attend a significant upcoming event. His words, filled with warmth and gratitude, were directed towards the people of Grenada, a nation close to his heart.

As Grenada celebrates its 50th anniversary of independence, King Charles III, although physically absent, sent his love and congratulations, reminiscing about his cherished visit to the Caribbean gem in 2019.

“I can only say how sorry I am that I cannot be with you in person to mark this momentous milestone," he wrote. “My thoughts are with everyone across Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique – ‘one people, one family’ – as you celebrate everything you have achieved and all that your future holds. My family join me in sending our heartfelt congratulations to you all.”

Despite undergoing treatment, King Charles III's commitment to his duties remains unwavering. Buckingham Palace has reassured the public that while he may step back from public gatherings, he will continue to fulfil his constitutional responsibilities, including regular meetings with the British Prime Minister.

The positive update on King Charles III's health was echoed by Queen Camilla, who, during her recent appearance at Salisbury Cathedral, shared encouraging news about her husband's progress. Surrounded by the tranquility of the cathedral, she expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and well wishes they have received during this challenging time.

In a video shared by ITV royal reporter Chris Ship on X, the queen said: "He's doing extremely well under circumstances. We are very touched by all of the letters and messages."

Images: Getty

You have a beautiful life with your gorgeous family, which, unlike others, doesn't have to involve Netflix!!!"

Loos responded to this supportive message on Instagram, expressing her gratitude and resilience, stating, "Thank you 🙏🏼 am taking in the nasty comments with as much humour as I can," and ending her comment with a heartfelt red heart emoji.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by REBECCA LOOS (@rebeccaloosofficial)

Numerous other users also came forward to support Loos on her most recent Instagram post, where she was pictured practicing yoga with the reflective caption: "Letting go and finding strength in the mountains of life."

One individual commented, "I have always admired your strength Rebecca! Keep being strong!" while another person hoped she was doing well and encouraged her not to let the negativity of others affect her soul.

Another fan commented on the renewed criticism and social media attacks on a woman they don't even know, urging people to "do better."

Back in 2004, Loos was accused of having an affair with Manchester United star David Beckham while she was working as his personal assistant. At the time, Beckham had been married to Spice Girls singer Victoria Beckham since 1999, and the allegations became a significant media sensation.

On October 4, Netflix released the documentary series Beckham, which delves into the football player's career and marriage, including addressing the rumours of his infidelity in the early 2000s. Both David and Victoria Beckham discuss the impact of tabloid rumors on their marriage during the series.

Victoria, in an individual interview for the series, admitted, "It was the most unhappy I have ever been in my entire life," and she shared how challenging it was, especially because they felt pitted against each other. David also acknowledged the difficulty of that period, emphasising Victoria's importance in his life and how hard it was to see her hurt but doubling down on their determination to overcome it together.

Images: Instagram

"I will die sorry": Phillip Schofield breaks his silence on his career-ending affair

Former This Morning host Phillip Schofield has broken his silence over his affair with a colleague 30 years his junior in an interview with The Sun.

And while the disgraced British television star shared that he had been left feeling “utterly broken and ashamed” over the whole ordeal, he stressed that any rumours of grooming were not true.

“I did not,” he told the publication, after a week of the social media rumour mill running riot. “I did not [groom him].”

“I know the photos of us circulating on Twitter look shocking, but I’m not a groomer,” Phillip insisted.

He noted that “there are accusations of all sorts of things”, but claimed that had never been an abuse of power, as “we’d become mates … but of course I understand that there will be a massive judgement, but bearing in mind, I have never exercised that anywhere else.”

According to Phillip, the two remain friends. And although the ex-show runner had been 30 years younger than him at the time of their affair, he added that the relationship had only begun after the man was 20 years old, when “something just happened between us that changed everything.”

“I assume somebody, somewhere, assumed something was going on, correctly” he shared, “and didn't say anything.

“At the time I did not think about it possibly ruining my career. I really probably only thought about it when I saw the rumour mill, and saw it growing.

“Then I saw the link with the drama school photo [from] all those years before, and thought, ‘this looks shocking’."

However, as Phillip said, he hadn’t lied in order to protect his own career, but instead because the other man in the affair hadn’t wanted “his name in public. He wanted his own life.”

Phillip explained that “the lies grew bigger and bigger and bigger”, and that it was starting to have a deep effect on both of them.

“It got to the stage where it was out of control,” he said, “and for whatever cost, it had to stop.

“I have massive guilt, and regret. I’ve made a mistake, I’ve had an affair at work.”

“I think my greatest apology must go to him,” Phillip revealed. “It has brought the greatest misery into his totally innocent life, his totally innocent family, his totally innocent friends.

“It has brought the greatest grief to them.”

He added that the pair hadn’t spoken since the story broke - and that he also no longer speaks to his former friend and co-host Holly Willoughby - but that when things began to spiral out of control, he’d “paid for his lawyers to independently work on his behalf.

“I am deeply sorry and I apologise to him because I should have known better. I should have acted the way I have always acted. I should not have done it.

“I’m sorry. And I will forever be sorry. I will die sorry. I am so deeply mortified.”

Images: Getty

Assault victim breaks silence after Rolf Harris' death

Warning: This article contains information about sexual assault which some readers may find distressing.

One of Rolf Harris's victims has spoken out about the "impact of evil" the disgraced entertainer had on her life, after the news of his death broke around the world.

Karen Gardner, a presenter for the the BBC, accused the convicted pedophile of assaulting her three times when she was his 16-year-old bag carrier for the show Star Games in 1977.

Upon hearing the news of his death, Gardner wrote on Twitter, "Very few of us escape the impact of evil people. What we have to do is expose them, share and stand together to dilute the pain."

"For me it was Rolf Harris but he inflicted much worse on other girls."

Ms Gardner shared the details of her harrowing experience in the recent ITV documentary Rolf Harris: Hiding in Plain Sight, which aired just last week.

She told the program, "In the space of I guess about 35 minutes, he assaulted me three times in plain sight. And it was horrible because you're surrounded by people, and he had a method of operating."

"I won't talk about the actual details, but he was paying me attention, he was saying how great I had been, and he, he hugged me, and that that's when, when it happened. And it was humiliating and degrading and awful and your, your blood turns to concrete."

"And then it was mid-afternoon and they had organised a couple of taxis and one of the cars came to get him. And I had to get in the back seat of the car."

Ms Gardner said Rolf got beside her and assaulted her again, adding, "Maybe because there wasn't anyone there, I did tell him to f**k off. And he said something, which makes, still makes me feel sick now. He said to me, 'You're irresistible.' I was 16. He was 48. He was 10 years older than my dad."

Harris was acquitted of assaulting Ms Gardner after the jury could not reach a verdict at two trials.

Rolf Harris' death was confirmed on May 23rd, while his death certificate states he died at the age of 93 on May 10th, after a battle with neck cancer.

Image credits: ITV / Getty Images

Courteney Cox breaks silence over Spare claims

Courteney Cox has finally addressed her unexpected cameo in Prince Harry’s memoir Spare, debunking the Duke’s claims.

In the book, Prince Harry shared an anecdote about going to the Friends actress’s home where he’d helped himself to a “box of black diamond mushroom chocolates” in her fridge that led to a wild, hallucinatory trip.

After unveiling her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the 58-year-old actress confirmed to Variety that the royal had once stayed at her house for “a couple of days”, but denied she’d been the one offering up the mushrooms.

“He did stay here for a couple of days — probably two or three. He’s a really nice person,” she said.

“I haven’t read the book. I do want to hear it, because I’ve heard it’s really entertaining. But yes, it’s gotten back to me about it. I’m not saying there were mushrooms! I definitely wasn’t passing them out.”

In Prince Harry’s best-selling memoir, he admitted he had become a “Friends fanatic” after becoming engrossed in the series while dealing with mental health issues and panic attacks after his second tour of Afghanistan in 2013.

In the years following, during a trip to Los Angeles with a friend, he’d spontaneously crashed at Cox’s house while party-hopping.

“We went from the home of [my friend] Thomas’ girlfriend to the home of Courteney Cox. She was a friend of Thomas’ girlfriend, and had more room. Also, she was travelling, on a job, and didn’t mind if we crashed at her place,” Harry wrote.

“No complaints from me. As a Friends fanatic, the idea of crashing at Monica’s was highly appealing. And amusing. But then … Courteney turned up. I was very confused. Was her job cancelled? I didn’t think it was my place to ask. More: Does this mean we have to leave?”

“She smiled. Of course not Harry. Plenty of room,” he said. “Great.”

The story was one of many eyebrow-raising revelations in Harry’s memoir, including details of private clashes with Prince William, a story about losing his virginity, and recounting having a frostbitten penis while he attended William and Kate’s wedding.

“We are devastated”: Family break silence over daughter’s intense Madeleine McCann claims

Julia Wendell’s story has been all over the internet in the past week, with one question on the tip of everyone’s tongue: is she telling the truth?

Julia, a 21-year-old from Poland, is convinced that she is the missing Madeleine McCann, who would only now be 19.

While highlighting the similarities between the two girls, Julia has also declared that she has been unable to source photographs from her childhood, and her own birth certificate. It has also been widely reported that Julia’s parents, who have denied her claims, have refused to partake in a DNA test.

“For us as a family,” they said in a statement to a Polish missing persons website, “it is obvious that Julia is our daughter, granddaughter, sister, niece, cousin, and step niece.

“We have memories, we have pictures. Julia also has these photos, because she took them from the family home with the birth certificate, as well as numerous hospital discharges.”

They spoke of how they tried to “get [Julia] back on her feet” after she left the family home, and opened up about how she sought fame when she was younger, with her eye on becoming something like a singer or a model.

“What’s happening now is she has got 1 million followers,” her family said. “The internet won’t forget, and it’s obvious that Julia isn’t Maddie. We are devastated at this current situation.”

At this time, neither London’s Metropolitan Police nor the Find Madeleine campaign have issued statements about Julia’s claim. However, they have previously provided updates on other potential leads, suggesting that they don’t put much stock into Julia.

Regardless, the Polish woman is pressing forward, with reports that she intends to go to court over DNA testing with her parents.

Dr Fia Johansson - who has been acting as Julia’s representative in a series of Instagram videos, and is a psychic medium and private investigator - announced the move.

As Dr Johansson told 7News, “when I’m talking to her … she’s crying and saying ‘I just need to understand the truth, all I want is for my mum and dad to do the DNA test with me’.

“But basically her father said, ‘no, we are not going to’.”

She went on to explain that if her parents were going to refuse, then they would be forced to take legal action. And while speaking to The Sun, despite the media frenzy Julia has sparked across the globe, Dr Johansson claimed they want to “be very respectful” in their approach.

“We want to be very respectful to the McCann family, and respect the privacy of them and their kids while we don’t know exactly who Julia is.

“My feeling is that we need to force the mother, or a member of Julia’s family, to take the DNA test rather than disrupt the peace of Kate and Garry, which is not necessary.

“If a current family member will take a DNA test we could solve this, but they are refusing to.

“I have been personally talking to Julia’s mother and told her we will make her safe and secure in any way she needs, but she is still refusing to take the test. She claims she has Julia’s birth certificate, but our worry is that you can easily forge this.”

Images: Instagram

Harry and Meghan break their silence on "boring and baseless" South Park episode

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have broken their silence after being portrayed in an episode of South Park, in which they were ruthlessly mocked and ridiculed.

The animated TV show released their newest episode, titled The Worldwide Privacy Tour, which depicted the royal couple embarking on a promotional tour for the Prince's new book titled "Waaaah".

After the episode aired, reports emerged that Meghan Markle was left "upset and overwhelmed" by their merciless slating on the show, while a royal commentator speculated that the couple's lawyers were "casting an eye" over the cartoon series.

Despite these claims, a spokesperson for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle has debunked rumours that they would be suing South Park over the episode, blasting the claims as "boring and baseless" in a statement given to Newsweek.

The statement did not mention Harry and Meghan's personal feelings towards the episode, nor did it address claims that the couple's lawyers will be monitoring the show in order to see whether South Park's creators launch any fresh attacks on the pair in the future.

U.S. royal commentator Kristen Meinzer also told Newsweek that is was easy to see why the couple were not taking legal action.

She said, "I highly doubt Meghan and Harry are suing a satirical cartoon that famously ridicules everyone."

"If anything, they'll know they're in good company with other decent people who've been raked over the coals by the show."

"For example, South Park has repeatedly ridiculed Al Gore and his efforts to combat climate change. They made fun of Steve Irwin for being killed by a stingray just a few weeks after his death."

"They turned Rob Reiner into a punchline because of his weight. They've never been a bastion of good taste, and they've absolutely been offensive, but again, they're also a cartoon, not a news outlet—and Harry and Meghan are unlikely to take a cartoon to court."

Silence of the poets – has an ancient tradition of commemorative verse died with the Queen?

Not so long ago, the death of a monarch would have been a cue for outpourings of elegies and poetic commemorations. One might have thought the end of the second Elizabethan era would prompt something similar – but apparently not.

So far, the death of Queen Elizabeth II has had only a muted response from our poets, both in the United Kingdom and here in Aotearoa New Zealand. Does this reflect shifting priorities in the national imagination? Are we witnessing the demise of poetry on public occasions?

We need only look back at the death in 1936 of the queen’s grandfather, George V, for comparison. John Betjeman and John Masefield were among the poets who marked the occasion. Betjeman was England’s poet laureate from 1972 until his death in 1984, and also wrote on the birthday of the queen mother and the marriage of Charles and Diana.

Betjeman stood in a long line of British poet laureates stretching back unbroken to John Dryden in 1668, and to poets such as Geoffrey Chaucer before that. But the culture of poetry responding to monarchs’ deaths has flourished outside the official post, too.

The unexpected death in 1612 of the 18-year-old Prince Henry, son and heir to James VI and I, prompted an outpouring of poetic tears. John Donne wrote an elegy, as did George Herbert, John Webster and Sir Walter Raleigh.

Elegiac energy

Particularly voluminous was the the flood of poetry that met the execution of King Charles I at the height of the English Civil Wars in 1649. His dramatic beheading on a scaffold erected outside Whitehall Palace made him a martyr to his loyal followers.

Literary historian Nigel Smith has described the way elegy became a royalist genre, as the death of the king “sucked all elegiac energy into its own subject”.

And there are close connections nearby to these elegies on King Charles I. Melbourne’s State Library Victoria holds the John Emmerson collection of over 5,000 early modern English books, among which poems, pamphlets and other publications on the death of Charles I feature prominently.

Poetic treasures in the collection include a copy of Monumentum Regale: Or a Tombe, Erected for that Incomparable and Glorious Monarch, Charles the First, a volume of elegies and poetic “sighs” and “groans” published three months after the king’s execution. Royalist poets grapple with how they can possibly commemorate an “incomparable” king. The Earl of Montrose declares he has written his poem with “blood”, “wounds” and the point of his sword.

In Aotearoa New Zealand, the Alexander Turnbull Library is famous for its collection of works by a poet from the other side of the 17th-century political divide, John Milton. Turnbull (1868–1918) had a personal interest in Milton, an ardent republican. Even Turnbull’s collection, however, contains a notable number of volumes celebrating Charles I, including multiple editions of Eikon Basilike (The King’s Book), which represented Charles I as a Christ-like martyr.

Public poetry isn’t dead

This vast body of public poetry about previous monarchs is in sharp contrast to the response to Queen Elizabeth II’s death. Even in the United Kingdom, the current poet laureate, Simon Armitage, seems to have struggled. The form of his poem “Floral Tribute”, an acrostic on the name “Elizabeth”, seems archaic at best and banal at worst.

New Zealand’s poet laurate, Chris Tse, inaugurated only a few weeks ago, has been notably silent. When I asked him why, he said writing a poem for the queen “would be a backwards step in terms of where I want the role to go”.

Tse’s reticence perhaps echoes the complicated thoughts of Selina Tusitala Marsh, a recent former laureate, on performing her poem “Unity” for the queen in 2016. For Marsh, the British Crown’s colonial legacy (as she put it, “Her peeps also colonised my peeps”) made writing and performing the poem a complex commission to accept.

As laureate, Marsh preferred to write poems on occasions such as the birth of a prime ministerial baby. But the fact New Zealand even has a poet laureate in 2022 suggests there is still an appetite for public poetry, even if the days of poems on the death of a queen are numbered.

The modern monarchy itself, of course, provides rich material for poetry of a less commemorative kind. Bill Manhire, New Zealand’s inaugural laureate, speculated on Twitter that we are awaiting an acrostic on “Andrew”. And the most remarkable poem of the morning we awoke to news of the queen’s death was essa may ranapiri’s “The Queen is Dead”.

Immediate and visceral, it’s an unabashed anti-colonialist spit in the face of monarchy. Some will find it shocking, others will gasp with appreciation. But even those taken aback by its frank approach and timing may share the sense of distance it captures, in its formal displacement of the news from afar by scrambled eggs, spring sunlight and the joy of quotidian love as a new day begins.

Public poetry isn’t dead. But our poets’ responses to the death of the queen – the silent, the awkward, the confrontational – tell us much, as ever, about the societies we live in.

This article originally appeared on The Conversation.

"Price I'm willing to pay": Novak breaks silence

Novak Djokovic has broken his silence on being kicked out of Australia last month over his anti-vaccination status.

The famous men's tennis player had refused to publicly reveal his COVID-19 vaccination status until recently.

He confirmed in a tell-all interview with BBC he is not vaccinated against the virus which has brought the world to its knees over the past two years. However, he doesn’t consider himself to be an anti-vaxxer.

"I was never against vaccination," he told the BBC.

"But I've always supported the freedom to choose what you put in your body.”

"The principles of decision making on my body are more important than any title or anything else. I'm trying to be in tune with my body as much as I possibly can."

Djokovic was originally granted an exemption to enter Australia despite not being vaccinated, which the Victorian government and Tennis Australia had said was mandatory to play the Open in January.

But the federal government stepped in and sensationally cancelled his visa, before locking him up in hotel quarantine in Melbourne and then deporting him after a failed appeals hearing.

Djokovic was kicked out of the country and Rafael Nadal won the Open, pushing ahead of Djokovic and Roger Federer to set a new record for grand slams won.

Djokovic hasn't spoken publicly about the saga until now, saying he was “really sad and disappointed with the way it all ended for me in Australia," he said.

"It wasn't easy."

His vaccination status has already cost him one major tournament, and now the French Open has said it will also blacklist Djokovic unless he gets vaccinated.

But the world No.1 is prepared to miss grand slams to hold fast in his beliefs.

"Yes, that is the price that I'm willing to pay," Djokovic said.

Image: Getty

Insider breaks silence on Princess Diana's last words

A fire chief who was one of the first people to help Princess Diana after her fatal car crash in Paris has spoken for the first time about her final moments.

Sergeant Xavier Gourmelon told The Daily Mail that when he arrived at the scene in August 1997, Diana was still “moving and talking”.

“She spoke in English and said, ‘Oh my God, what’s happened?’ I could understand that, so I tried to calm her.
