Fergie breaks silence amid second cancer battle

<p>Sarah Ferguson has broken her silence after it was revealed that she had been diagnosed with <a href="https://www.oversixty.co.nz/health/caring/fergie-reveals-second-cancer-diagnosis" target="_blank" rel="noopener">skin cancer</a> on Monday, her second form of cancer in just 12 months. </p> <p>The Duchess of York said she was in “good spirits” and thanked everyone for their support, in a post shared to Instagram. </p> <p>This comes just six months after Fergie had to undergo a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery for her breast cancer. </p> <p>“I have been taking some time to myself as I have been diagnosed with malignant melanoma, a form of skin cancer, my second cancer diagnosis within a year after I was diagnosed with breast cancer this summer and underwent a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery," she began in her post. </p> <p>“It was thanks to the great vigilance of my dermatologist that the melanoma was detected when it was.</p> <p>“Naturally another cancer diagnosis has been a shock but I’m in good spirits and grateful for the many messages of love and support.</p> <p>“I believe my experience underlines the importance of checking the size, shape, colour and texture and emergence of new moles that can be a sign of melanoma and urge anyone who is reading this to be diligent," she continued. </p> <blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; Fergie reveals second cancer diagnosis

<p dir="ltr">Sarah Ferguson has been diagnosed with skin cancer, just six months after undergoing treatment for breast cancer. </p> <p dir="ltr">The Duchess of York shared the health news via her spokesperson, while also urging people to undergo regular skin checks. </p> <p dir="ltr">"Following her diagnosis with an early form of breast cancer this summer, Sarah, Duchess of York has now been diagnosed with malignant melanoma," the statement read.</p> <p dir="ltr">"Her dermatologist asked that several moles were removed and analysed at the same time as the duchess was undergoing reconstructive surgery following her mastectomy, and one of these has been identified as cancerous.”</p> <p dir="ltr">The representative shared that Fergie was "undergoing further investigations to ensure that this has been caught in the early stages."</p> <p dir="ltr">"The Duchess wants to thank the entire medical team which has supported her, particularly her dermatologist whose vigilance ensured the illness was detected when it was," the representative added.</p> <p dir="ltr">"She believes her experience underlines the importance of checking the size, shape, colour and texture and emergence of new moles that can be a sign of melanoma."</p> <p dir="ltr">Despite being “distressed” by a second cancer diagnosis, the Duchess “remains in good spirits” throughout her recovery. </p> <p dir="ltr">The discovery of the skin cancer comes after Fergie revealed she had been diagnosed with an early form of breast cancer in June 2023.</p> <p dir="ltr">The Duchess of York announced a tumour had been found during a routine mammogram, for which she underwent a single mastectomy.</p> <p dir="ltr">In a 2023 wrap-up Instagram post, Fergie opened up about her breast cancer battle, confirming she had "beat" it after undergoing chemotherapy. </p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Image credits: Getty Images</em></p>

Second “royal racist” accidentally named in new book

<p>A second member of the royal family has been accused of being "racist", after the bombshell royal exposé implied them in the scandal over baby Archie's skin colour. </p> <p>In Omid Scobie's new book <em>Endgame</em>, he discusses the comments that members of the royal family made to Meghan Markle when she was pregnant with baby Archie. </p> <p>Markle first shared the bombshell allegations in her tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021, but she refused to name the royal family member who made the comments, saying, “I think that would be very damaging to them.”</p> <p>On Wednesday, reports emerged that copies of the book were being <a href="https://oversixty.co.nz/entertainment/books/new-royal-book-pulled-from-shelves-over-huge-legal-blunder" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pulled from shelves</a> as the Dutch translation of the book accidentally named the person involved in the scandal.</p> <p>Omid Scobie admitted he does know who made the comments, but UK libel laws prevented him from naming them in the book. </p> <p>Now, as copies of the tell-all book have been flying off shelves, it seems another member of the royal family has been implicated in the book, which is now said to be frantically being pulled from shelves.</p> <p>It comes after Mr Scobie denied responsibility for the Dutch translation of his new book “accidentally naming” a member of the Royal Family.</p> <p>Publishers Xander Uitgevers yesterday said they were seeking to remove Mr Scobie’s work from bookshelves saying there had been an “error”.</p> <p>Speaking to Dutch TV on Wednesday night, Mr Scobie defended his book, saying, “The book is in several languages, and unfortunately I do not speak Dutch”.</p> <p>“But if there are translation errors, I’m sure the publishers will have it under control."</p> <p>“I wrote and edited the English version. There’s never been no version that I’ve produced that has names in it.”</p> <p>In the English version, Mr Scobie writes, “In the pages of these private letters [given to Oprah by Markle], two identities were revealed. UK laws prevent me from reporting who they were”.</p> <p>But the Dutch version reads, “In those private letters, an identity was revealed and confirmed” — before going on to name a senior royal.</p> <p>Dutch royal reporter Rick Evers says he was one of only two journalists to be given a manuscript of <em>Endgame</em> last Wednesday.</p> <p>Mr Evers said, “I was shocked that no one else in the world mentioned the fact that a member of the royals was named in the book as the racist”.</p> <p>“That was the main accusation in the book that I noticed and what I put in my (review) article, which was published with a photo of that royal."</p> <p>“I began to question if it was only my manuscript that had the name in it. I went to get the book from a store and it was exactly the same,” Mr Evers said.</p> <p>“A woman called from the publisher saying there was a legal problem and my article had to be removed.”</p> <p>It is unclear how the error occurred, but Mr Scobie confirmed that the first royal family member named in the book is not the one stated in the letters from Meghan Markle. </p> <p><em>Image credits: Getty Images</em></p>

"Beautiful angel": Serena Williams welcomes second child

<p>Serena Williams and her tech entrepreneur husband, Alexis Ohanian, have welcomed their second baby girl! </p> <p>The couple took to Instagram and TikTok to announce the birth of their "beautiful angel" Adira River Ohanian in a series of family photos and a video. </p> <p>"I'm grateful to report our house is teaming with love: a happy & healthy newborn girl and happy & healthy mama. Feeling grateful," proud dad Ohanian captioned the photo of his wife and first-born Olympia meeting her baby sister for the first time. </p> <p>"@serenawilliams you've now given me another incomparable gift — you're the GMOAT," he said referring to her as a the greatest mum of all time. </p> <p>"Thanks to all the amazing medical staff who took care of my wife & our daughter 🙏 I'll never forget the moment I introduced @olympiaohanian to her baby sister."</p> <p>"Your peace would have been like a river, your well-being like the waves of the sea."</p> <p>Williams also made her own special announcement in a TikTok video. </p> <p>In the clip Williams takes a seat next to Ohanian and her first-born Olympia, before getting up and grabbing Adira and sitting back down to make their family complete. </p> <p>"Welcome my beautiful angel," she captioned the photo. </p> <p>The couple <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/lifestyle/family-pets/serena-williams-unveils-exciting-family-news" target="_blank" rel="noopener">first announced</a> their pregnancy at the 2023 Met Gala in a TikTok with the caption: "Was so excited when Anna Wintour invited all three of us to the Met Gala." </p> <p><em>Images: Instagram</em></p>

"Not my King": Second coronation marred by protestors

<p>King Charles has celebrated his coronation a second time during a ceremony in the Scottish capital of Edinburgh, just two months after being crowned King in London. </p> <p>The monarch was joined by Queen Camilla, and Prince and Princess of Wales, who are known as the Duke and Duchess of Rothesay in Scotland, for a Service of Thanksgiving and Dedication held in his honour. </p> <p>During the service inside St Giles Cathedral, the monarch was presented with the symbols of his authority in Scotland – the Crown, the Sceptre and the Sword of State.</p> <p>The new Elizabeth Sword, named in honour of the late monarch, was commissioned to replace the previous Sword of State as it had become too fragile, having been given to James IV by Pope Julius in 1507.</p> <p>The sword was carried into the cathedral by Olympic rower Dame Katherine Grainger.</p> <p>Despite the grand and emotional service, the ceremony was slightly marred by anti-monarch protestors outside.</p> <p>The protestors stood chanting "not my King" for hours on end so loudly, that the voices could be heard from inside the church during the quieter moments of the ceremony. </p> <p>Four protestors were later arrested for their disruption. </p> <p>Prior to the ceremony, Grant McKenzie from the Republic anti-monarchy pressure group, told the BBC's <em>Good Morning Scotland</em> programme that his group would be vocal at the event.</p> <p>"It's being forced upon us," McKenzie said. "We've got an unprecedented cost of living crisis. I don't think the public in the UK are particularly interested in their tax payer money being put towards a parade up and down the Royal Mile in Edinburgh - it's tone deaf.</p> <p>"Of course people are going to be able to enjoy it if that's what they want to do. Protests by their very nature are disruptive, we will be making ourselves visible and heard."</p> <p>The King and Queen didn't let the demonstrators get in the way of the proceedings, which was strengthened by the thousands of crowds who lined the streets of Edinburgh in support of the royal family. </p> <p>The tradition of a second coronation taking place in Scotland dates back over 400 years, with the late Queen Elizabeth also celebrating the event just weeks after her coronation in 1953. </p> <p><em>Image credits: Getty Images</em></p>

Princess Eugenie welcomes her second child

<p>Princess Eugenie has expanded the ranks of the royals with the arrival of her second child - another son with husband Jack Brooksbank. </p> <p>To celebrate, the princess took to her official Instagram account, sharing two pictures of their new bundle of joy - one of the baby by himself, and another with his proud big brother, August. </p> <p>“Jack and I wanted to share the news that we had our little boy,” she captioned the pics, “Ernest George Ronnie Brooksbank on 30th May 2023 at 8.49 weighing 7.1lbs.”</p> <p>Eugenie then made the touching explanation that little Ernest’s name was more than regal, but also meant a lot to the history of their family, too. </p> <p>“He is named after his great great great Grandfather George,” she said, “his Grandpa George and my Grandpa Ronald.”</p> <p>And last but certainly not least, she shared that “Augie is loving being a big brother already.” </p> <p>Some have speculated that Eugenie could be referring to either King George V - who would actually be Ernest’s great-great-great grandfather - or King George VI, while others have noted that the name also honours Jack’s father George, and Sarah Ferguson’s father Ronald.</p> <p>Either way, fans were delighted to hear the happy news, whether from Eugenie or from Buckingham Palace.</p> <p>“Princess Eugenie and Mr Jack Brooksbank are delighted to announce the safe arrival of their son, Ernest George Ronnie Brooksbank," a palace statement read. Rod Stewart’s second grandchild in just three days!

<p>It’s been an exciting week for British icon Rod Stewart as he’s been blessed with a second grandchild just three days after the <a href="https://www.oversixty.co.nz/lifestyle/family-pets/rod-stewart-s-son-gives-touching-nod-to-dad-in-new-baby-s-name" target="_blank" rel="noopener">birth of his grandson</a> Louie.</p> <p>The singer’s daughter has just welcomed a baby boy into the world.</p> <p>Ruby, 35, is the rocker’s daughter, who he shares with ex Kelly Emberg.</p> <p>The new mum announced the news on Instagram, revealing she and fiancé Jake Kalick had welcomed a boy named Otis Stewart Kalick.</p> <p>"This love… unlike any other love I've ever known," Ruby wrote alongside a sweet series of snaps of her new bub.</p> <p>"I am only a mirror of what I feel from you… I can't remember what life was like before you…. Second MAS*H star to pass away in just one month

<p dir="ltr">Actress Eileen Saki, best known for her role as bar owner Rosie in the hit series <em>M*A*S*H</em> has died.</p> <p dir="ltr">The 79-year-old had been fighting pancreatic cancer, and “passed away peacefully in Los Angeles” on May 1, according to <em>PEOPLE</em>. Eileen’s <a href="https://www.oversixty.co.nz/entertainment/tv/m-a-s-h-star-passes-away" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fellow <em>M*A*S*H</em> star, Judy Farrell, had died</a> just one month prior on April 2. </p> <p dir="ltr">Eileen’s manager, Camilla Fluxman Pines confirmed the devastating news in a statement to the publication, writing that “she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in January. </p> <p dir="ltr">"She was a lung cancer survivor in 2004.She got a second chance at auditioning and working in the industry that she loved so much - she shot a couple big commercials shortly before her diagnosis.</p> <p dir="ltr">"She was often recognized by face or even just voice by people who knew they knew her 'from somewhere' - and loved talking to young actors about the journey."</p> <p dir="ltr">Suki’s former co-star Jeff Maxwell, who brought the character Igor Straminsky to life on <em>M*A*S*H</em>, honoured his late friend with a social media post, sharing the news of her passing on the official page for his <em>MASH Matters </em>podcast.</p> <p dir="ltr">“Our sweet Eileen. “Have a second phone”: Aussie spy chief’s warning on social media use

<p dir="ltr">MPs have been urged to use a second phone if they want to access social media apps such as TikTok, after one of Australia’s top spy bosses spoke about how these apps use our personal information.</p> <p dir="ltr">Rachel Noble, the Director-General of the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD), recommended that politicians and their staff should adopt the practice during a Senate estimates hearing.</p> <p dir="ltr">She also said that having a phone without access to social media was the only way to have “absolute certainty” of data privacy.</p> <p dir="ltr">“Our advice was, frankly, for people who are members of parliament who might be particularly targets of espionage … that if you wanted absolute certainty that your social media app couldn’t have access to those things … would be to have a second phone which you exclusively use for that,” Ms Noble said.</p> <p dir="ltr">The warning comes after it was reported earlier this year that the ASD had confidential meetings with politicians and their staff to warn them that some apps undertake excessive data collection and request access to contact lists, location data and photos.</p> <p dir="ltr">Last year, the Department of Home Affairs restricted TikTok use on work phones, joining the Department of Defence in doing so.</p> <p dir="ltr">During the hearing, Ms Noble said that in some cases social media apps were collecting additional information extending “beyond the content of messages, videos and voice recordings”.</p> <p dir="ltr">“Social media apps are monetising what you do on your phone, what you access, what you look at for how long, who your friends are – they will seek to get demographics of your friends in order to push you the information and get you to buy things,” she said.</p> <p dir="ltr">With some apps headquartered outside Australia, such as China, Ms Noble said the information collected could be accessed legally or be subject to covert collection.</p> <p dir="ltr">Sectors of the Australian public service aren’t the only ones restricting use of social media apps on work phones, with parliaments in the United States and New Zealand warning against using TikTok on government devices.</p> <p><span id="docs-internal-guid-4a365f66-7fff-12a0-c84b-6e36f0ce1003"></span></p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Image: Getty Images</em></p>

<p>If you’re not a car expert, buying a used car can be tricky. Here’s a few simple tips to make the process easier. </p> <p>Second hand or used cars are an affordable option when you’re looking to purchase a vehicle that will get you from A to B. However, if you’re not a car expert, it can be difficult to determine if the pre-loved vehicle you’re buying is reliable and trusty, or will need extensive repair work to make it roadworthy. Having said that, you can buy a used car without having studied exactly what makes a car run.</p> <p>Your insurance company won’t cover the costs of damage that was already on the vehicle when you purchased it. These costs will need to be covered by you. It’s for this reason that it’s important to do a thorough check of the vehicle, both internally and externally, before buying it. Follow these basic guidelines to help ensure you buy a gem and not a lemon.</p> <p><strong>Take a sniff</strong><br />“The first thing to do is check the interior of the car really closely,” says David Skapinker from over 50s insurer, Apia. “If there has ever been water damage to a car it might only show under the carpeting, but ultimately it could lead to rust issues. What we suggest is to take a bit of a sniff around the car. It sounds funny but the water damage may actually show itself as a musty smell.</p> <p>“We would also suggest people check for things like scuffing, loose trimming and upholstery tears. Basically, anything that is considered pre-existing damage to when you take out an insurance policy won’t be covered by that policy, so the costs to repair that really will be up to you.”</p> <p><strong>Don’t forget the boot</strong><br />Another key area to check is the car’s boot. Take a look inside the boot to check if the vehicle has any internal damage, which could be the result of a previous incident.</p> <p>“If the car you’re buying has had a rear-end accident the external damage may have been fixed, but it’s very hard to fix the internal damage easily,” Mr Skapinker explains. “Take a good look at the exterior very closely too. If panels are slightly different colours, this might mean that damage from an accident has been repaired. There may be nothing wrong with that, but it’s worth getting an independent check of the quality of past repairs before you commit to buying the vehicle.”</p> <p>Check for rusting, small scratches and dents, and if you’re happy to live with these, then go ahead with your purchase. However, if you’re hoping to get these fixed, keep in mind a new insurance policy wouldn’t cover it as pre-existing damage is not included. .</p> <p><strong>Getting mechanical</strong><br />From the boot to the bonnet, it’s important to check the mechanics of the car as well. “If you are someone who is comfortable taking a look under the bonnet, common things to look out for are blocks or wear and tear around the carburettor, fuel injector, timing belts and spark plugs,” Mr Skapinker says. “For those who wouldn’t know where the carburettor is located, there are companies you can get in touch with who send out independent inspectors to thoroughly check the vehicle for you.”</p> <p>After giving your potential purchase an inspection, take it for a test drive as this is one of the most important steps in purchasing a second hand car. When you’re taking the car for a spin around the block, check the wheel alignment is not pulling the vehicle to the left or right, ensure the tyres and brakes work properly and that there are no odd sounds coming from under the bonnet. “Listen out for sounds like knocks and rattles,” Mr Skapinker says.“This can be a good indicator that something may be wrong.”</p> <p>Remember, this is a large purchase so take your time before making a decision. Be prepared in knowing what you want, what to look out for and what your limits are.</p>

<p dir="ltr">Johnny Ruffo made the (literal) last-minute decision to apply to the <em>X-Factor</em> auditions – a move which he now credits for his life changing irrevocably.</p> <p dir="ltr">The 34-year-old was still tossing up between whether or not he should apply for the singing show in 2009, and when he did he only had 30 seconds to do so before the cut-off kicked in and he would miss his chance forever.</p> <p dir="ltr">Of course, he went on to wow the judges and made it to the top three – which eventually saw him rise to fame and head off on tour tour with <em>One Direction</em> and <em>The Backstreet Boys</em>.</p> <p dir="ltr">“I was fairly happy with the path that I made for myself,” Ruffo says.</p> <p dir="ltr">“I had concerts, I was doing performances and shows, and I was really quite happy with how everything was going.”</p> <p dir="ltr">It was a few years later, in 2017, when Ruffo was <a href="https://oversixty.com.au/health/caring/johnny-ruffo-s-devastating-news" target="_blank" rel="noopener">first diagnosed with brain cancer</a> as he struggled with multiple headaches.</p> <p dir="ltr">His girlfriend Tahnee Sims pushed him to go to hospital where he was told that if he hadn’t come in then he wouldn’t have woken up the next day.</p> <p dir="ltr">But the <em>Home and Away</em> actor has now revealed that his cancer is back and it is terminal.</p> <p dir="ltr">As he struggled through the headaches, Ruffo was forced to wait four months before seeing a specialist.</p> <p dir="ltr">“The anxiety levels go up through the roof and you’re just waiting and waiting,” he told <a href="https://7news.com.au/entertainment/celebrity/the-30-seconds-that-changed-johnny-ruffos-destiny-star-opens-up-on-life-after-terminal-diagnosis-c-8067616" target="_blank" rel="noopener">7 Entertainment</a>.</p> <p dir="ltr">“And it’s like it feels like six months, but it’s only a week. And that’s just honestly... a day feels like a month.”</p> <p dir="ltr">It was only when he suffered 11 seizures in four days that Ruffo was rushed to hospital where he underwent an MRI scan.</p> <p dir="ltr">There they found multiple tumours and determined that he would have to start treatment immediately.</p> <p dir="ltr">“It felt like another kick in the teeth... yeah, dammit,” he said.</p> <p dir="ltr">The terminal diagnosis gave Ruffo a new “goal” in which he is <a href="https://oversixty.com.au/health/caring/he-is-everything-to-me-why-johnny-ruffo-is-hanging-on-for-christmas" target="_blank" rel="noopener">waiting for Christmas</a> where he will reunite with his brother and “best friend”, who has been away in Ireland for the past three years.</p> <p dir="ltr">He has also released a book, <em>No Finish Line</em>, dedicated to his girlfriend, in which he details his experiences recording music, acting, his girlfriend, family and partying.</p> <p dir="ltr">The title, he explains, is that “it wasn’t the end”.</p> <p dir="ltr">Ruffo is currently receiving chemotherapy injections every three weeks which he says are making him feel like “s***”.</p> <p dir="ltr">I’m always fatigued, just walking up a set of stairs,” he says.</p> <p dir="ltr">“By the time I get to the top I just want to have a sleep.”</p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Images: Instagram</em></p>

"10 seconds left to live": Skydive survivor recalls horror moment

<p>Young Aussie Emma Carey has recalled the gut-wrenching moment she realised she only had “10 seconds left to live” during a freak skydiving accident that happened nine years ago.</p> <p>Emma Carey, now almost 29, is lucky to be alive after her parachute became tangled and then strangled her instructor during a tandem skydive. The pair fell 14,000ft out of the sky.</p> <p>The accident unfortunately went down on the fifth day of her three-month long overseas trip when she decided to skydive in Switzerland alongside her best friend. Emma realised something was seriously wrong when she spotted the parachute flapping out in front of her rather than in the air above. When the parachute was finally deployed it became tangled with the strings of the safety chute and choked her instructor, causing him to pass out almost instantly.</p> <p>“I remember thinking, oh my god Jemma will have to find me on the ground, I remember thinking about my family and the main thing I remember feeling is regret for not embracing myself fully up until that point” she shared.</p> <p>The then-20-year-old copped the brunt of the fall, landing facedown with the instructor on top of her. Quickly trying to roll him off, she became distraught realising she couldn’t feel anything from the waist down. Ms Carey was rushed to hospital where surgeons operated on her back and pelvis. Her spine was broken in two places, rendering her a paraplegic.</p> <p>After recovering from surgery, she was reunited with her family and friends in Australia where she started rehabilitation. By some miracle, she slowly but surely began to get the feeling back in her legs and eventually learned to walk, albeit with a small limp.</p> <p>However, Ms Carey has remained positive throughout the ordeal and now looks at the terrifying moment she felt sure she was going to die as a “rebirth”.</p> <p>“I know how it feels. To think I only have 10 seconds left to live and now I get the rest of my life, whatever that is, so I think it's actually really nice for me to have that memory because it helps to keep me grateful,” she said.</p> <p>Carey has written a book “the girl who fell from the sky” detailing the day her life was changed forever.<br />It has been nine years since the shocking incident and little did she know, nine years later she would be where she is today.</p> <p><em>Image: Nine</em></p>

Could this 10 second balance test determine the longevity of your life?

<p>For adults who fall in the older age bracket, being able to balance briefly on one foot may predict how long they’ll live.</p> <p>People who failed the 10-second balance test, which involves standing on one foot were nearly twice as likely to die in the next 10 years, according to a report in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.</p> <p>Unlike aerobic fitness, flexibility and muscle strength, balance tends to be preserved until the sixth decade of life. After that, balance tends to wane quite quickly.</p> <p>Exactly why a simple balance test can predict risk of death is not yet known, said the study’s lead author, Dr Claudio Gil Soares de Araújo.</p> <p>Poor balance and poor muscular fitness can be linked with frailty in older adults. “Aged people falling are in very high risk of major fractures and other related complications,” Araújo wrote.</p> <p>“This may play a role in the higher risk of mortality.”</p> <p>Checking balance on one foot, even for those few seconds, can be valuable way to determine someone’s risk of falling.</p> <p><strong>How does balance predict longevity?</strong></p> <p>To explore whether a balance test might reveal insight into a person’s risk of death from any cause during the next decade, Araújo and his team reexamined data from the 1994 CLINIMEX Exercise cohort study.</p> <p>This study assessed associations between physical fitness, cardiovascular risk factors, and the risk of developing poor health and dying.</p> <p>For the new report, the researchers focused on 1702 participants from ages 51 to 75 with the average age being 61. At their first study checkup, when weight, waist size and measures of body fat were collected.</p> <p>The researchers included only people who could walk steadily in their analysis.</p> <p>At the first checkup, participants were asked to stand on one leg for 10 seconds without holding onto anything to support themselves.</p> <p>The participants were allowed three tries and were asked to place the front of the uplifted foot on the back of the weight bearing leg, while keeping their arms by their sides and their gaze fixed straight ahead.</p> <p>Overall, one in five failed the test with researchers noting inability to pass the test rose with age.</p> <p>In general, those who failed the test were in poorer health than those who passed, with a higher proportion being obese, having cardiovascular disease and unhealthy blood cholesterol levels.</p> <p>Type 2 diabetes was three times more common among people who failed the test as those who passed.</p> <p>After accounting for factors such as age, sex, BMI, history of heart disease, hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol, the researchers found that the risk of death within 10 years was 1.84-fold higher in participants who failed the balance test.</p> <p>The good news, Araújo said, is “it is never too late to improve balance by specific training. A couple of minutes a day - at home or in a gym could help a lot,” he continued. </p> <p>During a physical, doctors typically check people’s hearts, lungs, cholesterol and blood pressure, but usually don’t measure what shape they’re in. Blak Douglas becomes second ever Indigenous Archibald Prize winner

<p dir="ltr">Western Sydney artist Blak Douglas has won the 2022 Archibald Prize, taking home $100,000 along with the coveted title. </p> <p dir="ltr">The self-taught 52-year-old artist has become the second Indigenous artist to win the prize in its 101 years for his portrait of Wiradjuri artist Karla Dickens.</p> <p dir="ltr">The 2022 competition was Douglas' fifth time as an Archibald finalist, and accepting the prize at the Art Gallery of NSW ceremony, he said: "This painting represents 20 years of taking the risk of pursuing a dream [and] surrendering normalised employment. And I'm sure many of my artist colleagues can relate to that."</p> <p dir="ltr">His winning portrait depicts Karla Dickens, who he describes as a “legendary practitioner”, knee-deep in the muddy floodwaters of her hometown in Lismore, Bundjalung Country — holding a leaking pail of water in each hand, and looking grumpy.</p> <p dir="ltr">His painting reflects on the damage and after-effects of the devastating February and March floods in the Northern Rivers.</p> <p dir="ltr">"I've been up there [to Bundjalung Country] several times; it's a war zone," Douglas told <a href="https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-05-13/archibald-prize-2022-winner-blak-douglas-karla-dickens/101060204">ABC News</a>.</p> <p dir="ltr">"And so to be able to further aid some of my dearest, closest friends up there, through this win — not only metaphorically, but also financially — it's a big plus."</p> <p dir="ltr">Speaking via live video link from her home during the ceremony, Karla Dickens said she was "over the moon", and thanked her friend for "acknowledging everybody up here on Bundjalung Country that has gone through so much".</p> <p dir="ltr">"I'm so proud of you, Adam. Second Olympian killed in same town

<p dir="ltr">A second athlete has been killed in the same town that another Olympian was killed in just a year ago.</p> <p dir="ltr">Kenyan born Damaris Muthee Mutua was found in the town of Iten in western Kenya on Tuesday, the same town record-breaking distance runner Agnes Tirop was found dead in.</p> <p dir="ltr">Police have launched a manhunt for Mutua’s Ethopian boyfriend who is believed to have been the last person to see her. </p> <p dir="ltr">“According to Mutua’s immediate neighbour, her boyfriend was seen in the house on Sunday morning. It’s likely that the incident happened late Saturday or early Sunday since the body was in a state of decomposition,” county police chief Tom Makori told AFP.</p> <p dir="ltr">“We have launched a manhunt for the Ethiopian who is believed to have fled the country.”</p> <p dir="ltr">The 28-year-old was a junior athlete and two times bronze medalist at the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics in Singapore and the East African junior athletics championships in Khartoum, Sudan before deciding to represent Bahrain. </p> <p dir="ltr">Her story is similar to Tirop who was only 25 when she was <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/news/news/lost-a-jewel-olympic-runner-found-stabbed-in-her-home" target="_blank" rel="noopener">found with stab wounds</a> in her abdomen and her husband missing in October last year. </p> <p dir="ltr">Athletics Kenya said the country had “lost a jewel who was one of the fastest-rising athletics giants on the international stage, thanks to her eye-catching performances.”</p> <p dir="ltr">Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta also paid tribute at the time, saying, “It is unsettling, utterly unfortunate and very sad that we’ve lost a young and promising athlete who, at a young age of 25 years, she had brought our country so much glory through her exploits on the global athletics stage including in this year’s 2020 Tokyo Olympics where she was part of the Kenyan team in Japan.”</p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Image: Twitter</em></p>

Do you shop for second-hand clothes? You’re likely to be more stylish

<p>Not only is second-hand shopping good for the planet and your wallet, <a href="https://authors.elsevier.com/a/1eme%7E3SU%7EVoF7C" target="_blank" rel="noopener">our new research</a> finds the more style-conscious you are, the more likely you are to shop for second-hand clothes and accessories.</p> <p>In the 2020-21 financial year, <a href="https://reluv.com.au/sustainability-report-fashion-resale-in-australia/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">72% of Australians</a> purchased at least one item of second-hand clothes – but we wanted to know more about people who were shopping second hand.</p> <p>It is <a href="https://debtbusters.com.au/buying-second-hand/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">often assumed</a> those who shop for second-hand clothes do so to save money or reduce their impact on the environment.</p> <p>In our study, we found the higher people rate on style-consciousness, the more likely they are to shop second hand. In fact, style-consciousness was a bigger predictor of second-hand shopping than being frugal or ecologically-conscious.</p> <p>Style-conscious shoppers are very different from fashion-conscious shoppers. Fashion is all about the “new”: fashion is a novelty and constantly evolving.</p> <p>Style, on the other hand, is about expressing long-term individual identity.</p> <p><strong>The problem with fashion</strong></p> <p>Fashion shoppers are used to a continuous supply of new trends and “fast fashion” products. Fast fashion works quickly to replicate an ever moving stream of fashion trends, generating large volumes of low-quality apparel.</p> <p>The impact of fast fashion on the environment is significant and well-documented. Globally, the fast fashion industry creates <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1002/csr.2166" target="_blank" rel="noopener">92 million tonnes of waste</a> per year and uses 79 trillion litres of water. Less than 15% of clothes are recycled or reused.</p> <p>Poorly made and low-quality fast fashion items are a significant problem for charity stores, who are <a href="https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-01-14/charities-not-accepting-donations-as-bins-overflow/10713158" target="_blank" rel="noopener">forced to send</a> fast fashion items they can’t sell to landfill.</p> <p>But, going against this fast fashion trend, <a href="https://www.thredup.com/resale/#resale-industry" target="_blank" rel="noopener">growing numbers</a> of people are shopping for second-hand clothing and accessories.</p> <p><strong>A growing market</strong></p> <p>It’s difficult to determine the size of the second-hand market because many sales take place in informal settings such as pre-loved markets and online platforms like Facebook Marketplace.</p> <p>However, sales data from online platforms shows an explosion in growth. Each participant was measured for their orientation towards frugality, how ecologically conscious they are, their level of materialism, how prone they are towards nostalgia, their fashion-consciousness and their style-consciousness.</p> <p>While we found there are frugal and ecologically-conscious second-hand shoppers, our research revealed overwhelmingly that style-consciousness is the greatest predictor of second-hand fashion shopping.</p> <p>People who scored highly on the style-consciousness scale were more likely to shop for second-hand clothes than any of the other orientations.</p> <p>A style-conscious person expresses themselves through their clothes. These shoppers want clothes that complement their personal style and values. The perfect poached egg in 45 seconds

<p>A teacher has shared her simple cooking method for poaching the perfect egg in just 45 seconds without using a stovetop.</p><p>Katie Lolas, from Sydney, shared a video on <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CZahE4JJGBh/">Instagram</a>, showing exactly how she made poached an egg in the microwave using just a glass of water.</p><p>“If you don’t have a poaching contraption on hand and hate the taste of vinegar in your poached eggs, then this is for you,” she said.</p><p>“Whether it’s for eggs Benedict or avocado toast, this is the foolproof way to make poached eggs in the microwave.”</p><p>She started by adding a quarter of a cup of water to a microwave-safe glass.</p><p>“Crack an egg into the water ensuring that the egg is covered with water,” she explained.</p><p>“Poke the whites around the egg yolk three times with a fork or knife so the whites cook well .”</p><div id="taboola-mid-article-thumbnails"></div><p>Katie then cooked the egg on high for 45 seconds in the microwave.</p><p>“Cook in extra 15 second blasts if the egg isn’t cooked to your liking,” she said.</p><p>Once it’s cooked, strain the egg and serve with your dish of choice.</p><p>Katie said if you’re cooking more than one egg, you should always use fresh cool water.</p><p>“Never use the same water twice in the microwave - it will get too hot,” she said.</p><p class="css-1316j2p-StyledParagraph e4e0a020" style="margin: 0px 0px 1.125rem;line-height: 1.7;color: #292a33;font-size: 15px;background-color: #ffffff"><img src="https://oversixtydev.blob.core.windows.net/media/2022/02/Eggs-2.jpg" alt="" width="563" height="370" /></p><p>The video has since been viewed more than 80,000 times with many saying they couldn’t wait to give the method a go.</p><p>“Oh my god no way! Love it.”</p><div> </div><p>Those who tried the microwave method confirmed their eggs were poached perfectly every time.</p><p>“Love it! I do this at home as well. Never fail,” one wrote.</p><p>Another said: “I do this in the office microwave. Minds were blown. Unvaccinated couple die of COVID within seconds of each other

<p dir="ltr">An unvaccinated American couple died of complications from COVID-19 “within seconds” of each other. William and Carol Stewart, of New Hampshire, died in hospital on December 30 while holding hands. They had not been vaccinated against the virus.</p> <p dir="ltr">Mrs Stewart, who was 69, had been on life support for two weeks, while Mr Stewart, 73, had suffered from lung and renal failures.</p> <p dir="ltr">The couple’s daughter, Melissa Noke, said that her parents were the “true definition of soulmates” and had known each other since they were children, telling local TV station WMUR, “They’ve known each other since they were four, been together 45 years, married 44 years.”</p> <p dir="ltr">On the day they died, hospital staff wheeled the couple into the same room so they could be together. Nike said, “Placed both beds side-by-side, placing my mother’s hand into my father’s hand.</p> <p dir="ltr">“As soon as they touched hands, my father took his last breath, and then my mother 10 seconds later.”</p> <p dir="ltr">Ms Noke said that she hoped sharing her parents’ story would encourage others to get vaccinated. At the time of writing, only 62.3% of the US population was fully vaccinated, with that figure increasing to 67.4% for New Hampshire.</p> <p dir="ltr">The couple’s nephew Tim Stewart has started a GoFundMe to help cover medical and living expenses. On the fundraising page, he explained, “Carol and Bill do not have life insurance and I am hoping to help my family by alleviating them with some the financial stress and so they can focus healing through this difficult time.”</p> <p dir="ltr">Updating the page with news of their passing, Stewart wrote, “It is with the heaviest of hearts to share that last night at 9:12 pm Bill and Carol peacefully passed away hand in hand with their loved ones bedside. They fought a long and hard battle with covid, both intubated and on life support. “They were taken from us”: White Island survivor marks second anniversary of tragedy

The day that ripped us apart,” she wrote, sharing a series of photos of her family and her recovery.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“For a lot of burn survivors they call it their “burnversary”, a day where they can celebrate their achievements, accomplishments and the fact they survived such awful tragedy’s (sic) on this very date.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“I truly want to celebrate all that I have accomplished since I was severely burnt, just like other burn survivors do.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Unfortunately today’s not only the day I survived the unimaginable, it’s the day I lost my dad, Paul and sister, Krystal.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“It’s the day they were taken from us.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“My accomplishments mean nothing to me knowing they aren’t shared with my sister and dad by my side.”</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Stephanie added that she was “grateful” for making it home to her mother, but “heartbroken that only I made it back”.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“My heart hurts when I remember what I felt that day, but it hurts more not knowing what my dad and sister felt, that I wasn’t next to them during their last moments,” she continued.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Today marks two years of accomplishments but also loss, pain and never ending grief.
