Oprah reveals measly salary from The Color Purple

<p dir="ltr">Oprah Winfrey has shared the shockingly low salary she received for starring in the 1985 film <em>The Color Purple</em>. </p> <p dir="ltr">Ahead of the release of the reimagined movie musical, Oprah opened up about the experience making the original film, and the measly salary she received for her role. </p> <p dir="ltr">She revealed that “they were only offering $35,000 (A$55,500) to be in this film,” but she deemed it “the best $35,000 [she] ever earned.”</p> <p dir="ltr">“It changed everything and taught me so much,” she said. “It is God moving through my life.”</p> <p dir="ltr">The film was a global sensation, grossing nearly $100 million in 1985 dollars (the equivalent of $286 million when adjusted for inflation) and earning 11 Academy Award nominations, including Best Supporting Actress for Winfrey. </p> <p dir="ltr">In an interview with <em>Essence</em> conducted between Winfrey, who is an executive producer on the upcoming film adaptation, and some members of the new cast before the SAG-AFTRA strike, Winfrey said that she couldn’t “even begin to tell [them] what it means to [her]” that they chose to take on this project.</p> <p dir="ltr">“A person who wanted nothing more in my life than to be in <em>The Color Purple</em>,” she continued. </p> <p dir="ltr">“God taught me to surrender — that was the big lesson for me.”</p> <p dir="ltr">During the interview, Danielle Brooks, who is taking on Winfrey’s iconic role of Sofia in the adaptation, thanked Winfrey for “laying the blueprint for Sofia.”</p> <p dir="ltr">“Because I know that she’s changed your life, and I can feel that mine is about to shift, too,” she added. </p> <p dir="ltr">“Thank you for leaving space for me but also being there, to hold my hand and answer that phone call when I needed you. Margot Robbie's enormous Barbie salary revealed

<p>Margot Robbie is set to take home her biggest pay cheque yet for her portrayal in the <em>Barbie</em> movie, as the highly-anticipated film hits the $1 billion mark at the global box office. </p> <p>Robbie, who started her acting career on <em>Neighbours</em>, both starred in and produced the Barbie film, which was directed by Greta Gerwig. </p> <p>According to reports from <a href="https://variety.com/2023/film/news/barbie-pay-margot-robbie-salary-box-office-bonuses-1235695563/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Variety</em></a>, the 32-year-old Aussie actress made an upfront fee of $19 million to portray the Mattel doll, but that figure will make a significant jump after the lucrative sales, bringing Margot's salary to $77 million. </p> <p><em>Barbie</em>, which was made on a budget of approximately $220 million, hit the coveted $US1 billion mark at the global box office earlier this month, just two weeks after it hit cinemas.</p> <p>Robbie was instrumental in the making of the <em>Barbie</em> film, as her production company, LuckyChap, purchased the rights from Mattel in 2018. </p> <p>She then pitched the film to Warner Bros. and managed to convince Gerwig to both write and direct the blockbuster movie, with Gerwig's partner Noah Baumbach jumping in to help write the screenplay.</p> <p>Speaking of her commitment to making <em>Barbie</em> happen, Robbie recently said she was “overselling” the project in early meetings with executives to get the project off the ground. </p> <p>“I think my pitch in the green-light meeting was the studios have prospered so much when they’re brave enough to pair a big idea with a visionary director,” Robbie said in an interview with <a title="collider.com" href="https://collider.com/barbie-margot-robbie-interview-ryan-gosling/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Collider</em> </a>in July.</p> <p>She added, “And then I gave a series of examples like, ‘dinosaurs and [Steven] Spielberg’ – pretty much naming anything that’s been incredible and made a ton of money for the studios over the years. </p> <p>“And I was like, ‘And now you’ve got <em>Barbie</em> and Greta Gerwig.’ And I think I told them that it’d make a billion dollars, which maybe I was overselling, but we had a movie to make, OK?”</p> <p><em>Image credits: Getty Images</em></p>

Prince William's enormous salary leaked

<p>Prince William's extraordinary salary has been revealed, with the Prince of Wales set to rake in an eight-figure sum for the last six months alone. </p> <p>According to the Duchy of Cornwall’s 2023 annual report, the 41-year-old royal received a private income of just under £6 million (A$11,434,000) this year. </p> <div id="story-primary"> <p>William became the Duke of Cornwall following the death of Queen Elizabeth and his father, Charles’ ascension to the throne, meaning he is now also entitled to any surplus of profits from the dukedom.</p> <p>In the financial year of 2022 to 2023, the Duchy recorded net profits of £24.048 million ($45,800,000), according to the report, which was up £1.02 million ($1,944,260) from £23.024 million ($43,886,000) from the year before.</p> <p>The Prince of Wales would usually be entitled to the full $45.8 million profit as his private income, but because he only became heir halfway through the financial year, he received a fraction of his income. </p> <p>The Palace also asked that as a “one-off associated with the change in Dukes of Cornwall”, the Duchy team retain a proportion of the surplus for “working capital purposes” – i.e. the day-to-day costs of running of the estate.</p> <p>William was therefore left with an income of £5.9 million, or about $11 million AUD for his work. </p> <p>In a foreword for the Duchy’s financial accounts, Prince William paid tribute to his father for leaving an “indelible mark” on the dukedom and promised to work hard to make a difference in his new position.</p> <p>“I am committed to the cause of tackling climate change and I am proud of the estate’s efforts to contribute to this challenge,” William wrote.</p> <p>“If we can also help respond to social challenges such as mental health and homelessness, I will feel my term as Duke has been worthwhile.”</p> <p><em>Image credits: Getty Images</em></p> </div>

A job with a $500K salary and free house has no takers

<p dir="ltr">Healthcare can be hard to access in rural areas, but even one Aussie town’s tantalising offer of a hefty salary and free home has yet to successfully attract any doctors.</p> <p dir="ltr">Julia Creek’s McKinlay Shire Council, located 600km west of Townsville, Queensland, has put together an enticing package for a GP looking to go bush and help their tight-knit community.</p> <p dir="ltr">Despite offering a salary of up to $513,620 ($NZD 572,056) and a rent-free house on a decent piece of land, the council have had no takers so far.</p> <p dir="ltr">Currently, temporary doctors fly into the community for two days each week to support local hospital staff - with residents needing care on the other five days of the week forced to travel two hours or 200km to Mount Isa.</p> <p dir="ltr">Deputy Mayor Janene Fegan told NCA NewsWire that the package was first offered three months ago, but their search for a permanent GP in the community has been ongoing for the past 18 months.</p> <p dir="ltr">“It’s not only about the money, it’s also about the lifestyle,” she said.</p> <p dir="ltr">Ms Fegan first moved to the area for a temporary posting to work as a nurse, but three months has since become three decades.</p> <p dir="ltr">“It’s just a nice, easy, simple lifestyle,” she said.</p> <p dir="ltr">“We have plenty of room, plenty of space.”</p> <p><span id="docs-internal-guid-cbd9db93-7fff-6c3b-d448-e7d71e705311"></span></p> <p dir="ltr">With a tight-knit community of 500 residents, Ms Fegan said Julia Creek boasts warm sunny days, a gym that will only set you back $30 a month, and a pool that costs just $2 to use.</p> <blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; Margot Robbie’s eye watering movie salary revealed

<p dir="ltr">Margot Robbie has become the highest paid Hollywood actress thanks to her role in Greta Gerwig’s live action <em>Barbie </em>movie.</p> <p dir="ltr">The Australian actress, 32, takes on the lead role of <em>Barbie </em>in the upcoming film and received an eye watering USD$12.5 million (AUD$18.1 million) for it. </p> <p dir="ltr">This hefty sum now places Margot on the top of the list of Hollywood’s highest paid actresses. </p> <p dir="ltr">Her salary definitely soared since her last blockbuster <em>Birds of Prey</em> which saw her earn USD$10 million (AUD$14.6 million).</p> <p dir="ltr">Her co-star, heartthrob Ryan Gosling was reportedly paid the same amount for playing the lead male role in the film. </p> <p dir="ltr">Margot said that she is excited for the film to be released and it will certainly bring in a different type of audience. </p> <p dir="ltr">“We like the things that feel a little left of center. <p dir="ltr">A woman who earns $104,600 a year has shared how she spends her lavish pay cheque. </p> <p dir="ltr">The 24-year-old producer based in Melbourne, Australia, submitted her salary and breakdown of her spending habits to Smart Women Society.</p> <p dir="ltr">The breakdown is then shared into a short clip on TikTok revealing how much money goes where.</p> <p dir="ltr">After tax, HECS and superannuation, the young woman is left with $5,468 to take home. She also has a side hustle which brings in $1,000 monthly.</p> <p dir="ltr">The woman’s main goal is to set aside at least $60,000 for a house deposit, as well as having a safety emergency fund.</p> <p dir="ltr">A breakdown of her monthly spending habits shows $1,424 on rent, $140 on bills, $40 on her phone, $50 on transport, $90 on the internet, $74 on insurance, $300 on groceries and $160 on psychologist appointments. </p> <p dir="ltr">Once she’s got the important stuff out of the way, the woman is left with $3,728 of which $700 of it goes towards her home savings and $300 to the emergency fund.</p> <p dir="ltr">The only debts she has are a $363-a-month Invisalign treatment and her $26,000 HECS which is automatically taken out from her pay. </p> <p dir="ltr">She is then left with $2,582 for “fun” stuff such as shopping and eating out. </p> <p dir="ltr">Viewers shared their suggestions to the woman saying it would be better to put more toward the home savings.</p> <p dir="ltr">“That's a lot of money spent on 'fun' - I think I would try and save $1500 for my house,” one commented.</p> <p dir="ltr">“You need to live like you actually have a mortgage now and add those extra bills into it because when you have a mortgage you don’t get 2500 a month fun,” another added.</p> <p dir="ltr">“I’d be dropping an extra bit of cash into the house/emergency fund,” someone else shared.</p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Images: Shutterstock</em></p>

Top CEOs make workers’ yearly salaries in just FOUR days

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Leaders of some of the UK’s biggest companies will have made more money by 9am local time (10pm NZDT) on January 7 than the average UK worker earns in a year.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">A new </span><a rel="noopener" href="https://highpaycentre.org/high-pay-day-2022/" target="_blank"><span style="font-weight: 400;">analysis</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> from the High Pay Centre, a UK think-tank that campaigns for fair pay for workers, suggests that a FTSE 100 chief executive (working at any of the 100 companies listed on the London Stock Exchange) will have earned more than an average full-time UK worker’s annual salary.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The High Pay Centre’s calculations are based on government statistics relating to pay levels across the economy, as well as previous analyses of CEO pay disclosures in annual reports.</span></p> <blockquote class="twitter-tweet"> <p dir="ltr">Today the median FTSE100 CEO's earnings for 2022 will surpass the median annual wage for a full-time worker in the UK<br /><br />Such extreme inequality is immoral, unacceptable & unsustainable. In previous reports, CEOs have typically surpassed the average yearly wage by January 6.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">According to data from 2020 - the latest full-year figures - FTSE100 CEOs were paid £2.7 million ($NZD 5.43 million) on average that year, which is nearly 86 times the average salary of £31, 285 ($NZD 62,948), as reported by </span><em><a rel="noopener" href="https://www.theguardian.com/business/2022/jan/07/ftse-bosses-pay-average-9am" target="_blank"><span style="font-weight: 400;">The Guardian</span></a></em><span style="font-weight: 400;">.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The 2020 financial year saw the average wage for CEOs fall, with many bosses taking wage cuts and cancelling their bonuses during the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdown.</span></p> <blockquote class="twitter-tweet"> <p dir="ltr">Today is <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/HighPayDay?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#HighPayDay</a>. <br /><br />Just prior to 9am today, CEOs' earnings for 2022 will surpass the median UK full time salary. <br /><br />As key workers face a cost of living crisis, we need urgent action to ensure wealth is shared more fairly in our society. <a href="https://t.co/RC5ah2daxs">https://t.co/RC5ah2daxs</a></p> — High Pay Centre (@HighPayCentre) <a href="https://twitter.com/HighPayCentre/status/1479347068330123269?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">January 7, 2022</a></blockquote> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Though most companies are yet to release figures for the financial year ending in 2021, the High Pay Centre’s report found that 57 percent of those who have done so have recorded increased wages for CEOs.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The country’s biggest unions have said the disparity between bosses and ordinary workers was “disgraceful”, demanding that companies be forced to appoint a frontline worker to executive pay committees.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“The pandemic has shown us all who keeps the country going during a crisis,” Frances O’Grady, the general secretary of the Trade Union Congress, said.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“There are millions of hardworking people in Britain - from carers, to delivery drivers, to shop floor staff - who give more than they get back, but greedy executives are taking home millions while ordinary workers face yet another year of pay squeezes.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“As we emerge from the pandemic we need to redesign the economy to make it fair, and that means big reforms to bring CEO pay back down to earth.”</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Ms O’Grady said committees that set CEO pay must be “required to include workforce representatives who can speak up for a fairer balance of pay with ordinary workers”.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Incentive schemes for company directors should be replaced by profit-share schemes that include the whole workforce,” she added.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Too much wealth is being hoarded at the top.”</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Top earners in the UK included Pascal Soriot, the CEO of vaccine-maker AstraZeneca, who received £15.5 million ($NZD 31.2 million), Berkeley’s Rob Perrins, who collected £8 million ($NZD 16 million), and Experian’s Brian Cassin, who earned £10.3 million ($NZD 20.7 million).</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Meanwhile in Australia, the </span><em><a rel="noopener" href="https://www.afr.com/work-and-careers/leaders/revealed-australia-s-50-highest-paid-ceos-20211117-p599rf" target="_blank"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Australian Financial Review</span></a></em><span style="font-weight: 400;"> found that the paychecks of the country’s top bosses increased on average by 24 percent in the 2020-21 financial year, with Macquarie Group CEO Shemara Wikramanayake topping the list of high-earners with a reported pay of $15.97 million ($NZD 16.93 million).</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">As for New Zealand, a survey conducted by </span><em><a rel="noopener" href="https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/126432044/bosses-of-our-biggest-companies-can-earn-nearly-40-times-more-than-their-workers" target="_blank"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Stuff</span></a></em><span style="font-weight: 400;"> found that Kiwi CEOs received between 16 and 36 times worker pay, and that only half of the country’s 20 biggest companies were willing to disclose their median pay.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">According to the publication, Fletcher Building CEO Ross Taylor was the country’s highest earner, receiving $7 million. Though the company refused to disclose its workers’ median pay, Mr Taylor made nearly 90 times that of his workers if they received the survey’s mean pay of $80,000.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Sharon Graham, the general secretary of Unite the Union, took to twitter to criticise the continued heft of CEO salaries despite the pandemic.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Is it the nurse in an intensive care unit saving the lives of those struck by Covid, or an elite investment banker making millions, who contributes most to society?” she wrote on Twitter.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">“Which of them stood up for all of us during the pandemic?”</span></p> <p><em><span style="font-weight: 400;">Image: Getty Images</span></em></p>

Keanu Reeves donates his Matrix salary to cancer research

<p>Hollywood's nicest guy Keanu Reeves has reportedly donated 70% of his salary from <em>The Matrix</em> to cancer research. </p> <p>The 57-year-old Canadian actor made $14 million for the 1999 sci-fi hit film, before earning another $49 million after its impressive release at the box office. </p> <p>According to <a rel="noopener" href="https://www.ladbible.com/entertainment/latest-keanu-reeves-donated-70-of-his-matrix-salary-to-leukaemia-research-20211228" target="_blank">Lad Bible</a>, Keanu gave approximately $44 million of those earnings to leukaemia research, after his sister Kim was diagnosed with blood cancer in 1991. </p> <p>Kim, who is now 55-years-old battled the condition for 10 years before entering remission, as Keanu put his career on hold - which included the back-to-back <em>Matrix</em> sequels - to take care of her. </p> <p>He later started his own cancer fund, but didn't make it known to the public for several years. </p> <p>“I have a private foundation that’s been running for five or six years, and it helps aid a couple of children’s hospitals and cancer research,” Reeves told Ladies Home Journal in 2009.</p> <p>“I don’t like to attach my name to it, I just let the foundation do what it does.”</p> <p>The foundation provides critical funding for research into cancer, while also supporting both children's wards and kids' hospitals. </p> <p>This is not the first time Keanu Reeves has parted with his impressive movie salary to help others, as he has previously given up to $125 million to save at-risk jobs so people could stay employed. </p> <p><em>Image credits: Getty Images</em></p>

Queen under fire over abysmal job salary

<p>The royal family have come under fire after a job advertisement has been described as "disastrously" out of touch. </p> <p>The latest vacancy at Buckingham Palace is for the position of Personnel Security Adviser for the royal family, which requires applicants to have <span>a degree in security, experience and the confidence to "deliver vital work".</span></p> <p>The ad tells applications of the job that they will <span>"make important decisions every day" and will be "helping to protect a world-famous institution."</span></p> <p>The position oversees tasks at Buckingham <span>Palace, Windsor Castle, Sandringham and Balmoral, with the potential applicant working five days a week.</span></p> <p><span>Despite the importance and high-ranking position of this job, the pay rate has been labelled a "meagre" rate of only $24 an hour.</span></p> <p><span>The salary amounts to roughly $48,000 per year, and has been blasted by </span>royal critics who have described the rate as next to nothing compared to <span>the royal family's "incomprehensible" wealth.</span></p> <p>A reporter for The Mirror said the Queen's wealth is <span>"double-edged sword" and said the advertisement was "disastrous", considering the family costs the UK public approximately $128 million a year.</span></p> <p><span>"Everyone knows the monarchy brings money into the country — but is it an excuse to offer such low pay in comparison to their own wealth?" he said.</span></p> <p><span>The pitiful wage has coped global </span>scrutiny, given the opulent and exclusive lifestyle ledgy the royal family, particularly in terms of weddings.</p> <p>Reports show that the cost of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding expenses was around $61million, while the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton cost roughly $48million. </p> <p>These royal events also feed money back into the country's economy through global tourism opportunities, with reports of Harry and Meghan's wedding made the UK over $1.8billion in tourism revenue. </p> <p><em>Image credit: Getty Images</em></p>
