“The stuff of nightmares”: Baked to imperfection

Some people are destined for the kitchen, while others may be better suited to a career in comedy, if these cake decorating disasters are anything to go by.

Even armed with a visual guide and the world’s best intentions, some bakers are just in for a wild time - and thanks to some good-natured social media posts, we can all enjoy the colourful consequences right along with them.

Lucy was one such baker to face a betrayal from her cake. Posting to the Facebook page Woolies/Coles Mudcake Hacks, she shared her experience trying to follow professional baker Tegan ‘Tigga’ Maccormack’s Bluey birthday cake tutorial.

Needless to say, their end results weren’t exactly mirror images.

"Enjoy this absolute abomination - it looked easy on TikTok," Lucy wrote, attaching a picture of her hilarious creation.

Fellow Facebook users loved her attempt, with some even trying to make Lucy feel better.

One informed her that although it was nothing like the inspiration picture, it was “very cute”.

“OMG I genuinely love it!” another declared. “It made me smile, thank you for sharing.”

Meanwhile, one mum wrote that her seven-year-old encouraged Lucy to “keep trying!”, before stating that “it looks so bad she should probably eat the whole thing.”

On Reddit, someone had another unfortunate cake story to share - though this time they weren’t the baker responsible, simply the customer who got something they certainly hadn’t paid for.

“The ice cream cake we ordered vs what we received,” they wrote, sharing the image of two monkey cakes. One, the ‘expectation’ image, was a smoothly iced monkey head. The second, the ‘received’ product, was at least discernible as a monkey, even if the ‘smooth’ icing job left a lot to be desired.

“This was an ice cream cake from Baskin Robbins," it was explained. “They usually come out exactly as pictured online, but this time was truly spectacular."

And while many thought this particular approach to replicating the vision was hilarious, most were of the opinion that this had not actually been a failure, but instead an improvement. According to the majority in the comments, “frosting tastes much better than fondant” anyway.

Another Reddit user referenced a tweet they’d seen of another cake disaster, this time of a Minnie Mouse cake that someone had purchased for their niece, and the nightmare they’d gotten in return.

“I saw that it was posted in Arabic on Twitter, and it was pretty funny,” the Reddit user said, “so I just wanted to share it with a wider audience!"

“The cake's shininess is the stuff of nightmares,” was all one had to say about it.

“I would not have paid for that abomination,” another said.

Thankfully for the individual who had dealt with the cake firsthand, they were able to return it for a full refund.

"The cake was for my sister for her birthday," they told TODAY. "In the beginning, it was a horrible shock for us, but after I posted the picture on Twitter, I was laughing because of people's reactions."

Images: Instagram, Facebook, Reddit, Shutterstock

New photos capture devastating reality of helicopter collision

Warning: This article contains images that some readers may find disturbing.

Four of the survivors of the deadly Gold Coast helicopter collision have released a series of photos that document the immediate aftermath of the tragedy.

New Zealand couples Marle and Edward Swart, and Elmarie and Riaan Steenberg, were on board the descending helicopter that was struck by one just taking off.

The ascending helicopter crashed to the ground, killing four people on board and wounding three other passengers.

On Sunday, the four New Zealand survivors issued a collective statement, sharing how they are still struggling to come to terms with the tragedy.

"We want to express our deepest sympathies and sincere condolences to the injured, deceased, and their families," they said.

"Our hearts are deeply saddened by the loss. This has been traumatic for us as survivors, and we cannot imagine the terrible sadness their families and loved ones must be feeling."

The couples also offered their gratitude to those who helped them, including their "hero" pilot Michael James, bystanders who rushed to their aid and emergency and medical personnel who helped them.

"Their care and heroism changed our lives," the statement said.

"Our pilot, Michael James. You are our hero. You landed the helicopter safely and kept the bystanders and us safe. We are eternally grateful to you."

"Unidentified bystanders who ran to our assistance. The person on the jet ski who was first on the scene and helped us out of the helicopter, the off-duty paramedic who ran to our assistance, the holidaymakers who brought us hats, towels and water, and chairs."

"Every police officer and emergency services personnel both on the scene of the crash and later in the hospital. The staff of Villas de la Mer who helped our children to visit us and kept them safe. There are no words to describe our gratitude."

"Every staff member involved in our care at Robina Public Hospital. Your discretion and compassionate care during our stay brought us much comfort. We will always remember your kindness."

"Our community in New Zealand for all their well wishes and messages of comfort.

"Our dear family and friends in Australia who have supported us over this period. We appreciate you so very much."

"Craig and the staff of Sea World Helicopters for their support. We also want to express our deep condolences for the loss of pilot Ashley Jenkinson."

"The reality of the last five days' events is sinking in and is a heavy weight to carry," they said.

The four survivors also shared a series of images of their recovery in the hospital, as well as a photo snapped from inside the wreckage of the helicopter.

The four said they would continue to help the Australian Transport Safety Bureau and Queensland Police with their investigation into the incident as needed.

They are headed home to New Zealand, where Elmarie and Marle will continue their lengthy recovery.

Image credits: The Swart and Steenberg families

Expectation vs reality: Reporters share inside look at what cruises are like now

Four reporters have shared their experiences on some of the most popular cruising lines - revealing that their expectations weren’t quite met by the reality of their trip.

For Joey Hadden, who booked her first ever cruise on the Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas, her sessions of relaxing in the sun came with unexpected crowds and difficulties in finding a chair.

“I spent more time waiting in lines than I had anticipated. And I saw much of the world from behind other people's heads,” she wrote of her experience in Insider.

She shared that when she first boarded the ship and excitedly went to watch the ocean as they sailed away from the port, that tall, thick glass and not being able to find a spot to stand stopped her from doing so.

Fellow Insider reporter Monica Humphries said her experience with crowds aboard Carnival Vista, which was at partial capacity during her trip in July 2021, saw her waiting in long lines to disembark at each port and for help from the service desk.

Buffets were another source of contention and crowds for the two reporters, with Humphries also finding that issues with how food was labelled meant she accidentally ate meat twice despite asking what was in her food due to being pescatarian.
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; She changed my life forever and I’ll never be the same.”

Burke, who was in hospital for a heart operation at the time of her passing, said Burkitt had passed away “after a long battle with a serious mental illness”.

According to multiple media outlets, Norman Burkitt, Burkitt’s grandfather, said Burke’s mother found her body in a tent where she and Burke had been living since 2021.

The couple had been documenting their life living in a tent in Bodelwyddan, Wales, on their Facebook page, Join our Journey, after struggling to get council accommodation.

“We’re a differently abled couple who happen to live in a tent outdoors, in the UK,” the introduction on their page reads.

“Although this wasn’t really our first choice, we are still determined to remain happy and productive throughout!! We are turning our homelessness from something negative to something positive.”

Burkitt’s grandfather said the couple’s situation highlighted the “desperate” housing situation in Wales, since the couple couldn’t get public housing together as they were from two different parts of the country.

“The coroner has rang us to say there will be a post mortem. They were living in this tent because they could not get a house,” he said.

He described his granddaughter as a “fantastic girl” who was “so clever and bright”, emphasising her love of art and her television success.

“She broke all sorts of viewing records at the BBC and got two awards,” he said. “This has shattered us, we have had no sleep. Everyone will miss her.”

While Burkitt was filming her show, she was a registered carer for her mother, who later died from lung and breathing problems in 2014. Both had an undiagnosed form of dwarfism, which doctors couldn’t find the cause for.

Her grandfather revealed she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and had a heart valve issue that meant she was taking three different types of medication and had to have hospital check-ups every six months.

In January, Burkitt shared with her followers on Instagram that she had been hospitalised due to her physical and mental health at the end of the previous year, adding that she was “so happy to be much more stable” and couldn’t wait to be back with Burke and their dog, Loki.

Image: @joinourjourneyinsta (Instagram)

Readers Respond: What were the best books you’ve read this year?

They say old is gold and nothing compares to holding an actual book to escape reality.

But when was the last time you saw someone reading an actual book? And no, a Kinder or iPad does not count.

(Yes, we’ll completely ignore the fact that you are reading this on a device as well. But this is not a BOOK now, is it?)

It’s quite rare, but nothing beats holding a book and being able to turn the pages, and technology just won’t ever fully replace that feeling.

So we decided to ask our audience about some of the best books you’ve read in the past year.

Some titles were so interesting that we’ve added them to our own list of books to read.

Check out some of your responses below.

Valerie Brown - The Seven Sisters by Lucinda Riley. A story within a story of each book. Have just read the last in the series - The Missing Sister.

Kathy-Colin Macdonald - April Fools Day by Bryce Courtney. I don't like his fiction stories but this is an eye opener. Written with love about his son a haemophilia, who dies of AIDS from a blood transfusion in the 80s or 90s when being gay was definitely not acceptable and AIDS was a gay disease. Truly moving.

Margaret Louise Pavlovic - The Girl Who Left by -Deborah Gravonich wrote this true story about her mother leaving war torn Croatia. Great read.

Helen Ulgekutt - A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles. Great story, easy reading!

Carol Jean - Fall and Rise by Mitchell Zuckoff and Every Day is a Gift by Tammy Duckworth.

Kerri Anderson - Boy Swallows Universe by Trent Dalton.

Robyn Bright - The Happiest Man On Earth by Eddie Jaku.

Peter Baly - Ken Follett’s latest book Never. So close to the truth of what could happen in the current climate when nations start using nuclear weapons against each other. Compelling reading.

Pauline Cox - Too many to count. I don't read, I devour.

If you’d like to share some of your best reads, click here.

Image: Shutterstock

Take a trip through an ancient home in Pompeii

Archeologists have recreated a Pompeiian villa that was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 C.E.

Through the use of VR (virtual reality), researchers have carefully created a digital model of the ancient residence to better understand how visitors would have seen the home, according to the recently published paper in the archaeology journal Antiquity.

The villa, known as the House of the Epigrams, was excavated in the 1870s and so named because it contains mythical paintings accompanied by Greek epigrams.

While the identity of the owner is impossible to determine, researchers have suggested it may have belonged to a Lucius Valerius Flaccus due to a signet ring bearing his sigil being discovered there.

The paper, titled “Re-viewing Pompeian domestic space through combined virtual reality-based eye tracking and 3D GIS,” was written by PhD. candidate Danilo M. Campanaro and Professor Giacomo Landeschi, who are both affiliated with the Department of Archaeology and Ancient History, Lund University, Sweden.

Through extensive research, the authors of the paper have been able to determine what decorations to use in the recreation, as well as uncovering how the opulent villa would be viewed by residents of Pompeii of various social and economic classes.

This recreation is the first of its kind in the studies of ancient Pompeii, with the research findings showcasing a different quality of life for locals before their city was destroyed.

Daunted by therapy? Virtual reality could be the answer

If opening up to a therapist seems like a near-impossible task, new research shows that you’re not the only one - and proposes a new option that could soon be available.

A study from Edith Cowan University, published in Frontiers in Virtual Reality, found that 30 percent of people surveyed would rather talk about negative experiences with a virtual reality (VR) avatar than a real-life person.

Researchers created a ‘realistic motion avatar’ that appeared similar to its real-life counterpart, then compared the social interactions between people talking to the avatar versus a real person.

Participants then rated their experience on factors such as enjoyment, comfort, awkwardness, perceived understanding, and how much they think they disclosed about themselves.

Dr Shane Rogers, a psychology and communication researcher involved in the study, said participants found VR and face-to-face interactions to be quite similar in all but one way.

“Overall, people rated VR social interaction as similar to face-to-face interaction, with the exception of closeness, where people tended to feel a little closer with each other when face-to-face,” Dr Rogers said.

“This technology has the potential for broad application across a number of areas such as casual conversation, business, tourism, education and therapy,” he said.

“The study found that 30 percent of people preferred disclosing negative experiences via VR. This means that therapy might be opened up to new people who don’t feel comfortable with traditional face-to-face interactions.”

Virtual reality has been used in video games for several years now, but new research shows it can also be used in mental health settings. Image: Getty Images

Though VR has been around for several years, the new research is among several new studies and initiatives applying the technology to treat mental health conditions.

In the United States, veterans with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) are being treated with the assistance of VR, which can transport them back to traumatic experiences - even if they struggle to remember the event or other details.

The tech has also been used in “empathy training”, where clinicians wear VR headsets to better understand what patients in their care are experiencing, particularly for veterans with dementia or older LGBTQ veterans.

“Now what you hear and what you see in front of your eyes is the same thing as a patient who’s experiencing dementia or an LGBTQ vertan who’s ageing,” Anne Lord Bailey, a pharmacist and director of clinical tech innovation involved in the scheme, told FedTech.

“All of a sudden, people start talking to you and what you hear is muddled, or your vision doesn’t see what you should be seeing. It looks distorted, or I can’t hear things because they’re not clear, even though I can tell that people are talking to me. Or, I get disoriented: I try to turn to the right, and things are shifty or crooked.”

Meanwhile, the UK NHS launched a treatment plan last year using VR to treat patients with trypanophobia, or a phobia of needles, ahead of their Covid vaccinations. Patients are treated by being exposed to scenarios such as a medical waiting room or blood draw, to help therapists treat patients’ fears in a controlled environment.

“VR is very effective at bridging the gap between real-life exposure and what the patient feels able to do at the time they enter treatment,” Vanessa Dodds, a cognitive behavioural therapist involved in the UK program, told Medical Device Network.

Dr Rogers echoed this sentiment, adding that improvements in the technology will improve its affordability and accessibility as a treatment option - with applications beyond therapy as well.

“It might also enable therapists to conduct therapy more effectively at a distance, as a person can be in the therapist room (in virtual reality) while seated in their own home,” he said.

“More powerful computers are becoming more affordable, VR headsets are continuing to develop, and more user-friendly VR interaction software platforms are becoming more available and being updated.”

Following the work by Dr Rogers and his colleagues, future steps will involve more investigation of how different aspects of the avatar affect user experience, as well as how VR can be used in therapeutic settings.

Image: Getty Images

But now there’s a quicker, safer and environmentally friendlier way to travel to the centre of the galaxy – and you can do it too.

NASA has co-developed a free virtual reality (VR) adventure providing 500 years of travel around the black hole at the centre of the Milky Way. The experience is available to download from two major VR stores, Steam and Viewport, in a non-collapsed star system near you.

And this kind of spacefaring may be the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the potential of virtual travel and tourism.

The virtual travel bug

Simply speaking, VR refers to technology that immerses users in a computer-generated world that removes them from reality. Augmented Reality (AR), however, aims to superimpose virtual imagery over a user’s view of the real world. Pokémon Go is a popular AR game.

VR-based tourism has a longer history than you might think. In the 1850s, it involved staring at stereographs with a stereoscope. With this invention, viewers looked at slightly different images through each eye, which were then assembled by the brain to make a new image providing the illusion of spatial depth (in other words, a 3D effect).

A century later, 1950s Cinerama widescreen viewing inspired cinematic travel though its large, curved screens and multiple cameras.

The 1960s Sensorama foretold a shiny future of multimodal immersive cinematic experiences, playing 3D films with sound, scents and wind to immerse users. In VR circles, Ivan Sutherland became famous for inventing the head-mounted display, as well as augmented reality (AR).

Travel restrictions under COVID-19 present an opportunity for virtual reality travel to finally take off.

In an era of lockdowns and social distancing, we could use VR to travel to remote, distant or even no longer existing places. Remote tourism is here (the Faroe Islands offers a great example), and interest in VR tourism is blossoming.

VR comes in many forms

The word “virtual” can refer to an immersive 3D experience, but also 360° panorama photographs and movies (a cylinder, sphere or cube of photographs).

What is deemed “virtual” varies greatly across different devices and platforms. Let’s look at some of the ways this term is applied.

Desktop virtual environments: these are computer-based 3D environments on a flat screen, without the spatial immersion of VR platforms.

Cinematic VR: these are phone-based panoramic environments. Many desktop experiences of 360° movies or images can be conveyed in low-cost stereoscopic VR through smartphones. Google Street view can be viewed in Google VR on Android and some Apple smartphones, but it’s not real VR.

Head-mounted displays: HMDs such as Google Cardboard and Google Daydream are what many people think of when they hear “virtual reality”. Some HMDs are self-contained, not requiring connection to a computer or console. Arguably, the market is dominated by the Oculus range owned by Facebook, the HTC Vive range, and PlayStation VR.

VR in a pandemic

In a post-coronavirus age, device sharing is problematic. HMDs aren’t easy to clean and VR software can quickly become obsolete, with new headsets sometimes not running two-year-old software. Users also have to deal with costly updates, eyestrain, and having to share displays that sat on someone else’s face.

Developing and sharing content across different devices can be a nightmare but there are increasingly simple and effective ways to create AR and VR content, despite a bewildering range of platforms and equipment (there are more than 140 3D file formats).

Despite this, many VR projects are not preserved – including virtual heritageprojects! Even for the largest HMD companies, supplies can be limited.

Places you can virtually visit now

Nonetheless, there are plenty of VR programs available to help relieve lockdown boredom, with many sites offering lists of their favourite picks.

The Street View app for Google Daydream and Cardboard provides a “virtual tour” of Chernobyl. Google Earth and Google Earth Voyager feature travel sections, too.

Google Earth VR is available on the HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. VRfocus also has an interesting travel section. Princess Charlene’s sad reality without her kids

Princess Charlene of Monaco has given a glimpse into her recovery from surgery, after weeks of “painful” separation from her husband and children.

The 43-year-old former Olympic swimmer took to Instagram to share several snaps from her call with her two twins, six-year-old Princess Gabriella and Prince Jacques.

“Spending time with Jacqui and Bella,” she wrote.

“Making blankets for the crèche next door. Wish me luck,” she added.

Princess Charlene has been in her home country of South Africa for the last few months to undergo anti-poaching work while her husband, Albert and their children remained behind in Monaco.

The royal sported skinny jeans, a green turtleneck jumper and tan boots while blowing kisses to her children via a FaceTime call.

In another photo, Princess Charlene is seen showing several colourful wildlife conservation posts on the wall.

The Zimbabwe-born royal sadly developed a worrying ear, nose and throat infection that required surgery in May.

The royal had a second surgery a month later “to address complications from a previous operation,” the palace confirmed in a statement to PEOPLE Magazine.

Charlene will remain in South Africa “indefinitely” to undergo more procedures, meaning she has not seen her kids and husband since early June when they last came to visit the conservationist royal.

Her recovery also prevented Charlene from returning to Monaco to celebrate her tenth wedding anniversary with Prince Albert on July 1.

"This year will be the first time that I will not be with my husband on our wedding anniversary in July, which is difficult and saddens me," she said in a statement shared prior to the big day.

"However, Albert and I had no choice but to follow the instructions of the medical team, even if it was extremely difficult. He has been the most incredible support to me," she added.

Charlene also opened up about the painful reality being separated from her husband and kids.

"It's been a trying time for me. I miss my husband and children dearly," she told South African News Channel24.

"Albert is my rock and strength and without his love and support I would not have been able to get through this painful time."

Albert and the twins are planning to visit Princess Charlene in South Africa.

Images: Instagram

The devastating reality behind Steve Irwin’s unearthed letter

A bitter family feud has taken centre stage after Bindi Irwin accused her grandfather of psychologically abusing her.

The embattled family’s long standing issues are a far cry from the heartbreaking letter uncovered in 2016.

It was a note Steve wrote when he was 32, and in it he detailed his gratitude for his parents and their strength.

Image: Supplied

“At 32, I am finally starting to figure it out. In good times and in bad, you were there. Your strength and endurance to raise me will not go unrewarded. My love for you is my strength,” the legendary croc hunter penned.

“For the rest of my life I will reflect on the unbelievably GREAT times we’ve shared and will continue to share. You’re my best friends!”

Irwin’s letter would not be found for almost a decade, but four years after writing it, the conservationist would give birth to his daughter Bindi with Robert closely following behind.

Image: Supplied

Today’s bitter feud is nothing short of devastating, with Bindi insisting her grandfather has never had a kind word to say about her.

The star made the unsettling allegations against Bob in her Father’s Day post (Father’s Day outside of Australia was June 20), which she dedicated to her own father, her husband, Chandler Powell, and her father-in-law.

When Bindi was asked why she left Bob out of the tribute, the new mum did not hold back in her reply.

“Unfortunately my grandfather Bob has shown no interest in spending time with me or my family,” she wrote.

“He has returned gifts I’ve sent him after he opened them, he has ignored my correspondence and from the time I was a little girl he has ignored me, preferring to spend time doing anything else rather than being with me.

“He has never said a single kind word to me personally. It breaks my heart but it is not healthy to engage in an abusive relationship.

Image: Supplied

“I hope everyone remembers to be kind to one another but most of all care for your own mental health,” she added.

“I have struggled with this relationship my entire life and it brings me enormous pain.”

Close friends and family members of Bob Irwin quickly rebutted the claims, including his biographer Amanda French.

French, who co-wrote Bob’s 2016 autobiography The Last Crocodile Hunter, spoke to Brisbane radio show Stav, Abby and Matt to express her immense grief over Bindi’s comments.

According to Amanda, Bob resigned from Australia Zoo in 2008 and hasn’t seen his grandkids since.

“It’s a surprise with what Bindi came out and said. There were some pretty weighty terms that were thrown around, psychological abuse and all that stuff. You’d have to have some pretty big evidence to back that. It’s a pretty big call to make,” she said.

Another member of the Irwin family, Bethany Wheeler, went on to angrily dispute Bindi’s claims in a Facebook post.

Bethany revealed that she is the “the granddaughter of Bob Irwin via marriage of my father and my Stepmother Mandy as a very young child.”

She went on to call Bob “the most genuinely beautiful human on this planet and has NEVER spoken out or put down anybody! He is a man who sits silently and battles his demons alone, in what is great sadness. He doesn’t retaliate, only prays for his grandchildren’s safety and good lives.”

Wheeler wrote that her “sisters and brothers will happily back me up when I say that Bob Irwin is a passive and beautiful human and these lies need to stop”.

Image: Supplied

Amanda revealed Bob and Terri Irwin’s relationship suffered after the death of Steve, as the conservationist’s father did not agree with how management quickly began to change.

“He’s maintained a very neutral position about it [resigning] even when he published his autobiography.

“The reason why he did that is because he knew there would be consequences for Australia Zoo. He didn’t see eye-to-eye on issues to do with Australia Zoo at the time and some of the animals.”

In the wake of the international media storm, Bindi announced she would be “taking a break” from social media as a means to protect her mental health.

“I’m taking a break from social media and most of my work in the public eye for a month to be with my beautiful daughter and my wonderful family,” she wrote on Instagram.

“I feel tremendously grateful to share our life and conservation work with you but I need some time to focus on the happiness that is my family (both human and animal).”

Terri Irwin also posted a cryptic yet seemingly pointed message on her own social media.

Taking to Twitter, she shared a post about “avoiding certain people” just days after the family’s feud made headlines.

The full quote was penned by author and military veteran Steve Maraboli, and reads: “Avoiding certain people to protect your mental health is not a weakness … It’s wisdom.”

She captioned the snap, “Thank you @SteveMaraboli. Another jewel. Caring for others seems to be easier than caring for ourselves.

“It takes courage to follow through on what we know is the right thing to do. Wishing everyone the best to be brave and wise. It’s worth it!”

Reality star raises over $1 million in just 16 hours for stricken baby

A social media influencer has raised over £1m (AUD$1.8m) in less than a day to help his daughter get life-saving treatment for leukaemia.

Ashley Cain, who appeared on the MTV series Ex on the Beach, wrote on Instagram on Saturday that he and his partner Safiyya Vorajee, also an influencer, "are on our knees asking for help" after their seven-month-old, Azaylia, had a leukaemia relapse.

The baby requires a year-long CAR-T therapy, plus a haplo transplant, for the best chance of survival, Cain wrote.

It only took 16 hours after the post went up for Cain to hit the £1m target after more than 83,000 people donated.

The 30-year-old said: “After long discussions and a global outreach for treatment, our consultants along with consultants from around the world have come to the conclusion that the ONLY option to save a minimum period of 1 year.

“Because of the aggressiveness of Azaylia’s disease, we don’t have time on our side and we may have to fly out within a matter of weeks. Azaylia is such a strong little girl who has fought through every near impossible battle so far and she has done it all with love in her heart and a smile on her face!”

Cain and Vorajee welcomed Azaylia in August, and learned their baby was suffering from leukemia at eight weeks old.

“Azaylia had a frighteningly high leukemia count plus tumours in her spleen, stomach, lungs and kidneys which put her in critical condition and resulted in her being put into intensive care,” Cain wrote on the fundraising page.

“The doctors warned us that there was a high probability that she wouldn’t survive past the first round of chemotherapy due to the aggressiveness and rareness of her disease combined with her age.”

The couple, who have already surpassed their fundraising target, said they will donate any extra money to “other children and their families in the same situation”.

The shocking reality about Charles and Diana’s honeymoon

They honeymooned on board the royal yacht Britannia

After Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s “wedding of the century” at St Paul’s Cathedral in July 1981, the royal pair set off for Gibraltar on Spain’s south coast, where they boarded the Royal Yacht Britannia. The yacht cruised around the Mediterranean, including the Greek islands, for 14 days. The couple ended their getaway at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. It was a luxurious itinerary – but what really went down during those first few days of the couple’s doomed marriage? Turns out, a lot more drama than you might think.

Diana was still reeling over this engagement comment

While most people head out on their honeymoon with the impression that their partner is totally in love with them, Diana wasn’t so sure. Her insecurity stemmed from an awkward interview at the time of her and Charles’ engagement. “We had this ghastly interview the day we announced our engagement,” she told her speech coach on a tape that was later used for the Channel 4 documentary Diana: In Her Own Words. “And this ridiculous [news] man said, ‘Are you in love?’ “I thought, what a thick question. So I said, ‘Yes, of course, we are,’ and Charles turned round and said, ‘Whatever love means.’ And that threw me completely. I thought, what a strange answer. It traumatised me.”

Charles called Camilla every chance he got

Although Charles’ former flame Camilla Parker Bowles had already been married to her first husband, Andrew Parker Bowles, for eight years, Charles still found a way to call her from the Mediterranean. “The Prince simply had to be in constant contact with Camilla or he couldn’t function properly,” his valet Stephen Barry said in the book The Diana Chronicles. “If he went without his daily phone call, he would become tetchy and ill-tempered.”

The pair didn’t enjoy their first night together

“That first night was nothing special,” Charles told a friend, according to Tina Brown’s The Diana Chronicles. “It was pleasant enough, of course. But she really was painfully naive.” According to Brown, “Charles had enjoyed women who led him, mastered him, and mothered him. He was used to being served, not required to seduce.”

Charles wore a gift from Camilla on the honeymoon

As if calling Camilla wasn’t bad enough, Charles also received a gift from her. “On our honeymoon, cufflinks arrive on his wrists,” Diana said on the Channel 4 tapes. “Two C’s entwined like the Chanel ‘C’. Got it. One knew exactly. So I said, ‘Camilla gave you those, didn’t she?’ He said ‘Yes, so what’s wrong? They’re a present from a friend.’ And boy, did we have a row. Jealousy, total jealousy. And it was such a good idea – the two ‘C’s – but it wasn’t that clever.”

The couple’s incompatibility became extremely apparent

Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s 12-year age gap had always been known, but never was it more apparent than aboard the Brittania. The 32-year-old prince envisioned spending his honeymoon sunning, swimming, reading, painting, and writing thank-you letters. “He’d taken along his watercolours, some canvases and a pile of books by the Afrikaner mystic and writer Laurens van der Post, which he’d hoped he and Diana might share and then discuss in the evenings,” wrote Penny Junor in her book The Duchess. “Diana, however, was no great reader. She hated his wretched books and was offended that he might prefer to bury his head in one of them rather than sit and talk to her. She resented him sitting for hours at his easel, too, and they had many blazing rows. One day, when Charles was painting on the veranda deck of Britannia, he went off to look at something for half an hour. He came back to find she’d destroyed his painting and all his materials.”

Diana’s bulimia spiralled out of control

Princess Diana had been struggling with bulimia for months by the time her honeymoon came around. “[During our engagement], my husband put his hand on my waistline and said: ‘Oh, a bit chubby here, aren’t we?’ and that triggered off something in me,” she told her biographer Andrew Morton. “And the Camilla thing. I was desperate, desperate. I remember the first time I made myself sick. I was so thrilled because I thought this was the release of tension.” The disorder only got worse aboard the Britannia.

Diana felt hopeless about the marriage by day two

While the world watched the prince and princess in awe, Diana began to feel despair. She told her biographer Andrew Morton that her “tremendous hope was slashed by day two.” At one point, she wrote “I feel so small, so lonely, so out of my depth,” according to Tina Brown’s book. The couple announced their separation in 1992 and divorced in 1996.

IMAGE: Shutterstock

Written by Juliana LaBianca.
