"Proud to pay more": The billionaires who want to pay more tax

Over 250 millionaires and billionaires have issued an open letter to global leaders encouraging them to implement wealth taxes to combat the cost-of-living crisis.

This comes just as a report by the Oxfam Charity revealed that the global wealth of billionaires have only grown in the last three years despite inflation.

The open letter, signed by super-rich individuals from 17 countries, includes signatories like Abigail Disney, the grand-niece of Walt Disney, Succession actor Brian Cox, and American philanthropist and Rockefeller family heir Valerie Rockefeller.

They said that they would be "proud to pay more taxes" in order to address the inequality.

"Elected leaders must tax us, the super rich," the letter read.

"This will not fundamentally alter our standard of living, nor deprive our children, nor harm our nations' economic growth.

"But it will turn extreme and unproductive private wealth into an investment for our common democratic future."

Austrian heir Marlene Engelhorn is also among the voices demanding that they pay more in taxes.

"I've inherited a fortune and therefore power, without having done anything for it. And the state doesn't even want taxes on it," Engelhorn, who inherited millions from her family who founded chemical giant BASF, said.

The letter was released just as global leaders gather in Davos, Switzerland for the World Economic Forum.

Abigail Disney, whose net-worth is measured at more than $100 million, said that lawmakers need to come together to make a meaningful economic and social change.

"There's too much at stake for us all to wait for the ultra rich to grow a conscience and voluntarily change their ways," she said.

"For that reason, lawmakers must step in and tax extreme wealth, along with the variety of environmentally destructive habits of the world's richest."

A recent survey of almost 2400 millionaires found that 74 per cent of them supported the introduction of a wealth tax to fund improved public services and deal with the cost-of-living crisis.

The open letter also said that one-off donations and philanthropy "cannot redress the current colossal imbalance" of societal wealth.

"We need our governments and our leaders to lead," the letter said.

"The true measure of a society can be found, not just in how it treats its most vulnerable, but in what it asks of its wealthiest members."

Images: Getty

“Proud of my wrinkles”: Twiggy’s guide to ageing gracefully

Twiggy first exploded onto the modelling industry when she was crowned “The Face Of 1966”. The icon has since developed a stellar career and was even made a dame in 2019.

Despite her rapid rise to fame (her photo was spotted by a fashion journalist) and her trusty address book full of celebrity contacts, the '60s icon remains grounded as she shared her love for the “ordinary things”.

“We’ve all met people in the entertainment business who are kind of flying, they’re not quite with the world, are they? And that’s not me,” she said in an interview for the Daily Mail.

“I love going to the supermarket, just ordinary things. I love my job, but my life is real life with Leigh and my kids, my grandkids, my friends”.

Twiggy, whose real name is Lesley Hornby, is a proud grandmother who clearly loves going by adorable nicknames as she prefers to be called “mimi” instead of grandma.

When speaking about her grandchildren, her face lights up. The former model has two biological grandchildren from her daughter, Carly, and three step-grandchildren from her partner, Leigh Lawson’s son, Jason.

“He’s got three now, so when we get a houseful, it is noisy. But I love it. It’s what life’s about, isn’t it?” she said.

Twiggy also proudly shared how different her life as “mimi” looks. The usually glammed up star said that in her day-to-day life she is usually bare-faced, with a ponytail.

“That’s me when I’m out and about. Sunglasses, hair just pulled under a baseball cap,” she said.

Unlike other stars who may have opted to go under the knife, Twiggy is proud of her natural look.

“I’m kind of proud of my wrinkles,” she said.

“I understand when people have little tweaks and maybe I’ll even do it, I don’t know.

“But what I don’t think I’d ever do is all the stuff they inject, when they get those funny cheeks that look like cotton wool balls have been stuffed in them. It would frighten me,” she shared.

She also shared how she embraces ageing by never getting botox.

“It’s botulism, isn’t it?” she said of the procedure.

“And I never fancied the idea of that floating round my body."

She also said that she does Pilates once-a-week which helped her eliminate back pain, which had plagued her since she turned 60.

Twiggy’s life story is going to be told for the first time in a documentary made by actor-turned-filmmaker Sadie Frost, with the final footage for the film taken just last week at the Cannes Film Festival.

In September a Twiggy musical, Close Up, written and directed by Ben Elton is set to be released.

Images: Getty

No child should be able to make school hell for another child day in day out”.

“We all have our breaking points and can only be pushed so far. What is the right course of action here?!

“Also she didn't "bully" back. Bullying is repeated behaviour,” she wrote, defending her daughter’s actions.

Bianca also tweeted that her daughter had no malicious intent and only did it because she wanted to “be left alone to quietly enjoy school”.

Image: Twitter

"He’s a very proud dad": Unearthed snap of Michael Schumacher stuns fans

Max Verstappen has shared never been seen photos of Michael Schumacher with the world.

The back-to-back Formula 1 world champion is currently preparing to secure a third straight crown for Red Bull in 2023.

Before the season begins, F1 fans are being treated to a sneak peek behind the curtain as Netflix’s smash hit Drive to Survive releases its fifth season.

Verstappen is heavily featured throughout episode four of the new season, which was released globally on February 24, focusing primarily on former Haas driver Mick Schumacher.

The episode, titled Like Father, Like Son?, brings to light the struggles the famous young racer endured before he was let go by the Haas team.

However, it's Verstappen who once again steals the show as he shares what it was like to grow up alongside the Schumacher family.

Max’s father, Jos, was teammates with Michael at Benetton, with an old interview filmed in the 2000s showing the pair being asked if they would let their kids become F1 drivers.

“I think this could be the first time we have an argument if our two would be racing,” says the German.

It’s what came next that stole the hearts of many, leaving F1 fans stunned. As Max talks about the relationship between the two families, a clip of Max as a toddler interacting with Michael is played before a never been seen photo flashes on the screen.

“We used to go on holidays when we were little together, the two families, and these kind of memories will stay with me,” explains Max, who is now a 35-time race winner in F1.

“For both of us to be in F1 is amazing and also for Michael, he’s a very proud dad for sure.”

The image shows Michael sitting on a hanging chair with baby Max on one knee and his daughter, Gina-Maria, on the other.

Mick was replaced by F1 journeyman Nico Hulkenberg and will have to sit out 2023 as a reserve driver at Mercedes behind Sir Lewis Hamilton and his teammate George Russell.

Drive to Survive charts Mick’s difficult sophomore season in 2022, including his horror 170mph incident in Saudi Arabia.

Mick’s rough year saw him outscored by his teammate, the returning Danish veteran Kevin Magnussen.

The Netflix series focuses on Mick’s struggles and the pressure that came with racing under the Schumacher name.

“Mick has the lineage of one of the greatest drivers the sport has ever seen,” said F1 journalist Will Buxton.

“But it remains to be seen if he has the same character as his dad.”

Haas boss Steiner said the Schumacher name was a “blessing and a curse” for Mick.

But in characteristically non-nonsense fashion, the famously foul-mouthed team principal says at some point the young German will have “stand up” and be his “own man”.

Mick outlines the struggles surrounding pressure on the show, including the admission “dreams don’t always come true”.

His dad is one of the most renowned F1 drivers of all time, rising to power in the 90s and going on to dominate the sport by the early 2000s.

He raced from 1991 to 2006 and again from 2010 to 2012, a second act of his racing career which became instrumental in setting up the dominant Mercedes team.

The German won five world championships with Ferrari and two for Benetton.

Schumacher retired in 2012, but a year later, he was involved in a life-changing skiing accident while on the slopes with Mick.

He was left in a medically induced coma before being sent home, and no further information has been revealed since the incident.

His family, led by his wife Corinna, protect Michael’s privacy and offer him a quiet life.

There have only been hints and cryptic rumours about Schumacher’s health, with information being drip-fed by friends and anonymous sources.

Jane Fonda reveals which surgery she’s “not proud of”

Jane Fonda has opened up about her beauty procedures, admitting there is one she “is not proud” to have done.

The 84-year-old’s latest interview with Vogue saw her get candid about going under the knife, including her regrets about getting a facelift.

“I had a facelift and I stopped because I don’t want to look distorted. I’m not proud of the fact that I had [one],” Fonda said.

“Now, I don’t know if I had it to do over if I would do it. But I did it. I admit it, and then I just say, OK, you can get addicted. Don’t keep doing it. A lot of women, I don’t know, they’re addicted to it,” she said.

As for her skincare routine, Fonda revealed that face creams weren’t a big part at all.

“I don’t do a lot of facials,” she explained.

“I don’t spend a lot of money on face creams or anything like that, but I stay moisturised, I sleep, I move, I stay out of the sun, and I have good friends who make me laugh. Laughter is a good thing too.”

When asked about her H&M Move campaign, which is focused on “getting the whole world moving”, she told the publication she still felt youthful in her 80s and hoped to help others abate their fears about getting older.

“I’m almost 85, but I don’t seem that old,” Fonda said.

“So getting young people to stop being afraid of being old, helping people realise that just because you’re a certain age doesn’t mean you have to give up on life, give up on having fun … or whatever you want to do.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Jane Fonda (@janefonda)

She added that ageing doesn’t have to be intimidating, and she wants more people to know that it can be positive and healthy.

“I know better than I did even when I was younger that no matter how old you are or who you are or where you are, keeping moving in a way that’s appropriate for your age is absolutely critical to your healthy lifespan.”

Image: H&M

“Proud of my heritage”: Barty’s emotional speech

Image: 9News

Former tennis star turned commentator Jelena Dokic became emotional and teared up as she spoke to Ash Barty for her on-court interview after defeating Ukrainian qualifier Lesia Tsurenko 6-0 6-1 in just 54 minutes.

Much like the rest of the country, Dokic is clearly a big-time Barty supporter, as she found it unmistakably difficult to keep her composure as she chatted on-mic with the superstar on Centre Court after her win, where she immediately recalled another of Barty's victories.

“I want to first congratulate you on your Wimbledon win. I think I speak — not I think, I’m sure — I speak for everyone here, everyone in Australia, around the world, particularly myself — thank you,” Dokic said.

“You gave us so much joy watching that last year. You made us so proud. I get goosebumps right now. I just want to hug you but I can’t.

“There are no words to describe what you’ve done so thankyou for that.

“Now I’m going to lose all my questions.”

Then it was Barty's turn to speak, as she talked about her Indigenous heritage while three young fans waved the Australian Aboriginal flag from the stands.

“I think I’m my most comfortable self when I’m out on the court … I’m a very, very proud Indigenous woman. I love my heritage, I love to celebrate my heritage,” she said.

“It’s what connects me to all of you here today. It’s what connects me to the land.”

The exchange melted hearts. Tennis writer Prajwal Hegde tweeted: “Jelena Dokic’s on-court interview of Ash Barty — Wimbledon, Indigenous heritage, expression — was outstanding. The world No. 1 is Australia’s and is much loved.”

It’s not the first time Dokic has welled up speaking about Barty. After the 25-year-old won Wimbledon last year, Dokic became emotional on live TV as she praised the role the Queenslander’s parents have played in raising her to become such an admirable role model.

“I just want to get this out before I fall apart. So give me 15 seconds,” Dokic told Nine in July.

“I want to give a shout out to her parents, obviously Josie and Rob, because people underestimate the importance of family. She talks about that all the time.

“And as someone who didn’t have that support, it is so important. This will set an example for parents in Australia and around the world, not just how to raise a champion but a genuinely wonderful human being."

“This is how you support them. You don’t pressure them, you’re there for them and this is why she is there, so big shout out to them, well done.”

Prince Charles says he’s ‘proud’ of Prince Harry

Prince Charles has described feeling proud of his sons, Princes William and Harry, for their role in recognising the threat posed by climate change. The essay seems particularly surprising given how frosty relations have been between Prince Harry, his wife Meghan Markle, and the rest of the royal family in recent years.

The 73-year-old heir to the British throne wrote a lengthy essay for Newsweek, urging global leaders to come together and address the growing threat of climate change. In the essay, Charles mentions the work both of his sons have done to advocate for action on climate change, writing, “The scale and scope of the threat calls for regional and global solutions that will require the active participation of every sector of industry, in every country around the world. As a father, I am proud that my sons have recognised this threat.

“Most recently, my elder son, William, launched the prestigious Earthshot Prize to incentivise change and help repair our planet over the next ten years by identifying and investing in the technologies that can make a difference.

“And my younger son, Harry, has passionately highlighted the impact of climate change, especially in relation to Africa, and committed his charity to being net zero.”

Charles continued, “The time is now. The eyes of our children and grandchildren are judging us. Let ours be the generation that can. And does. As we enter a new year, there is not a moment to lose.”

Recent reports have suggested that Harry, his brother and his father have “barely spoken” in recent months, following Harry and Meghan’s resignation from royal duties and move to California in early 2020.

In an interview with Oprah, the couple described feeling hurt by comments made about their son Archie before his birth, speculating as to what his skin tone would be. It was alleged in a recent book that Charles was the family member who made those comments, with Harry revealing that their relationship was strained.

Image: Samir Hussein/WireImage

Young boy who saved his sister is "proud" of his scars

The seven-year-old boy from Cheyenne, Wyoming, in the US, was hailed as a hero last year when he jumped in front of his younger sister to save her from being attacked by a German Shepherd.

Called Bridger Walker, the boy says he’s “proud” of his scars and at the time, he explained his actions by saying: “If someone had to die, I thought it should be me.”

Bridger needed 90 stitches for the damage to his face and he’s since undergone multiple procedures, some pro bono, on his face, which has reduced the scarring, the New York Post reports.

His dad, Robert, told People
magazine that Bridger is still as humble a year later: My wife and I asked him, ‘Do you want it to go away?’ And he said, ‘I don’t want it to go all the way away’,” the father of five said.

“Bridger views his scar as something to be proud of, but he also doesn’t see it as being representative of his brave act. He just perceives it as, ‘I was a brother and that’s what brothers do’. It’s a reminder that his sister didn’t get hurt, and that she is okay.”

Celebrities from around the world — including Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo and Brie Larson — as well as strangers, sent Bridger gifts and letters for his act of courage.
“It was certainly unexpected when everything went viral,” Robert said. “It is not something we’d ever want to relive, but the light certainly outshone the darkness by exponential degrees.”

“Chris Evans, his video was amazing and he sent the shield. Bridger couldn’t have been more delighted,” Robert said. “When he talked to Tom Holland, he was probably the most starstruck because that was a live call so that one certainly left an impression … His emotional recovery was really a worldwide effort and that was so special to us.”

Bridger also attracted the attention of New York dermatologist, Dr Dhaval Bhanusali, who flew him out and treated him at his office for free.

“He gave us so much hope,” said Robert, who said other doctors were pessimistic about how much they could help fix Bridger’s face. “That was kind of our first rainbow after all of this.”

When the pandemic made cross-country trips to see Dr Bhanusali difficult, Bridger began seeing a doctor in Utah who also helped repair his scars.

All of them have since helped reduce Bridger’s scarring and made him smile and feel optimistic again, his father said.

Photo: nicolenoelwalker/Instagram

I love that match-up. She knows her way around this court and I know I need to play well to give myself a chance in that match.

“This is a dream come true.”

Tomljanovic has unfortunately never made it past the round of 16 at a grand slam.

“The match-up felt really bad from my side,” Tomljanovic said. “Felt like she was neutralising my serve with the slice, which kind of set the tone for me and made me really uncomfortable because it was hard to break her.

“She was serving great, and the slice was just really hard to deal with today.”

Barty was still full of praise for her competitor.

“Ajla is an incredible competitor. I’ve practised with her a lot, played with her as Fed Cup teammates. Roger Federer's touching Aussie ritual that will warm your heart: "I hope he would be proud"

Since he began his professional tennis career in 1998, Roger Federer has competed in various tournaments across the world.

But only at the Australian Open does he have a special ritual.

Since 2005, an elderly couple has accompanied the world number three player and his team every year at the Melbourne event.

The pair are Bob and Diana Carter, parents of Federer’s first international coach, Peter Carter.

Federer was just nine years old when Carter took him under his wing. The Australian coach helped Federer develop his signature technique of a one-handed backhand.

“I think if I can say thank you for my technique today, it’s to Peter,” Federer told CNN Sport in January.

Carter died aged just 37 in 2002 in a car accident while honeymooning in South Africa.

According to The Australian, the then-20-year-old Federer “ran through the streets bawling” upon hearing the news.

David Law, a former communications manager at the Association of Tennis Professionals, said on his podcast that the incident prompted Federer to leave behind his temperamental attitude.

“That made Federer grow up incredibly quickly because I don’t think he’d ever had to think about mortality before,” said Law.

“This is someone he knew well, who he saw every day, who he travelled everywhere with.

“It hit Federer incredibly hard and I think that – and this is a feature of Federer as a boy becoming a man – is that at every stage of his life, whatever has happened, he’s digested what has happened and he’s learnt from it.”

Federer said of Carter, “I guess he didn’t want me to be a wasted talent, so I guess it was somewhat of a wake-up call for me when he passed away and I really started to train hard.”

When asked what Carter would think of his 20 grand slams record, Federer said, “I still miss him so much. I hope he would be proud.”

In tribute to the late coach, Federer has reached out to Carter's parents every year since 2005.

Every December, Federer’s team would send an all-expenses paid itinerary to the Adelaide-based couple, including flights and accommodation details and Australian Open tournament tickets.

The Carters can usually be spotted sitting behind Federer’s coach in Rod Laver arena.

This year, Federer finished in the fourth round of the Australian Open after losing to Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas.

"Extremely proud to be making this announcement": Air New Zealand announces major change

Air New Zealand has introduced changes to allow staff to “proudly” display their non-offensive tattoos at work, reversing a controversial long-standing policy.

Starting September 1, the airline’s staff will be able to have tā moko and/or non-offensive tattoos visible when wearing their uniform or normal business dress.

“I’m extremely proud to be making this announcement,” said CEO Christopher Luxon. “It reinforces our position at the forefront of the airline industry in embracing diversity and enabling employees to express individuality or cultural heritage.”

The changes came after five months’ research with Air New Zealand customers and employees, as well as a few high-profile cases of job applicants being turned down due to visible tattoos. The airline has been slammed as hypocritical for preventing staff to display their tattoos while promoting using koru designs.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Air New Zealand (@airnz) on Apr 22, 2019 at 11:02pm PDT

Luxon said according to the company’s research, one in five adult New Zealanders has at least one tattoo, with more than 35 per cent of people under 30 having been inked.

“We want to liberate all our staff including uniform wearers such as cabin crew, pilots and airport customer service teams who will, for the first time, be able to have non-offensive tattoos visible when wearing their uniforms,” said Luxon.

“There is an expectation that Air New Zealand will represent our country and our people authentically to the world and having a workforce who can bring their true selves to work is an important part of that.”

The carrier’s spokeswoman said the appropriateness of the tattoos will be evaluated in the same way as speech: “…in the same way you shouldn't swear, make hateful comments, lewd jokes, or use violent language in the workplace for example, the same goes for tattoos”.

She said, “Where the situation is not clear, we will have a Tattoo Review Panel to assist employees and managers to determine whether a tattoo is aligned with our policy.”

Head of aviation at E tū union Savage said it was a “smart move” for the company. “Aotearoa is a Pacific nation. No one should be surprised to board an Air New Zealand flight or turn up at a New Zealand airport and be attended to by someone with a tattoo and a smile on their face,” said Savage.

“Tā moko, tatau and tattoos are all Pacific artforms.

“Air New Zealand is embracing diversity and inclusiveness to increase workplace wellbeing and productivity and as a union we support that.”
