Priscilla Presley's reaction to movie based on her life

Priscilla Presley has shared how "emotional" she became after watching the new movie based on her life with her late rock star husband.

The 78-year-old attended the premiere of the new film Priscilla, which was based on her 1985 memoir Elvis & Me.

Priscilla took to the red carpet at the Venice International Film Festival on September 4th alongside director Sofia Coppola and the cast.

"It was very difficult to sit and watch a film about you, about your life, about your love," she explained at a media call following the premiere screening.

"Sofia did an amazing job. She did her homework, we spoke a couple of times and I really put everything out for her that I could," she added.

Priscilla went on to explain why she thought her love story was so intriguing to a public audience, as she spoke about the early days of her relationship with the late rock star.

"It was very difficult for my parents to understand that Elvis would be so interested in me and why, and I really do think [it was] because I was more of a listener," she said.

"Elvis would pour his heart out to me in every way in Germany: his fears, his hopes, the loss of his mother which he never, ever got over. And I was the person who really, really sat there to listen and to comfort him. That was really our connection."

She continued, "Even though I was 14, I was actually a little bit older in life, not in numbers. That was the attraction. People think, 'Oh, it was sex.' No, it wasn't. I never had sex with him. He was very kind, very soft, very loving, but he also respected the fact I was only 14 years old."

Euphoria star and Aussie actor Jacob Elordi plays Elvis in the new film, with Cailee Spaeny in the title role of Priscilla, which traces Priscilla's early years and relationship with the music icon.

Elvis Presley estate officials reportedly slammed the movie, with TMZ claiming unnamed officials were displeased with news of the production, labelling it a "money grab."

Actors leave their own movie premiere

The A-list cast of Oppenheimer have abruptly left the London premiere of the highly-anticipated movie.

Stars of the film such as Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, and Florence Pugh disappeared from the premiere, shortly after appearing on the red carpet.

The film, about Robert Oppenheimer who was key in the creation of the nuclear bomb, is set to be one of the biggest films of the year, with thousands of fans turning up to London’s Leicester Square to celebrate its premiere.

However, before the movie could even begin inside the theatre, the stars walked out, leaving director Christopher Nolan to wonder where they were.

Nolan later told Variety that the actors walked out of the event in solidarity with a just-called Hollywood actors strike.

“You’ve seen them here earlier on the red carpet,” he said.

“Unfortunately, they’re off to write their picket signs for what we believe to be an imminent strike by SAG, joining one of my guilds, the Writers Guild, in the struggle for fair wages for working members of the unions, and we support them.”

SAG-AFTRA is the Screen Actors Guild which represents 160,000 performers including A-list stars.

SAG members will now go on strike, joining writers in the first industry-wide shutdown in 63 years after last-ditch talks over dwindling pay and the threat posed by artificial intelligence failed, with nearly all film and television production set to grind to a halt.

“SAG-AFTRA’s national board unanimously voted to issue a strike order against the studios and streamers,” said the union’s chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland.

At the Oppenheimer premiere, Matt Damon warned on the red carpet that he and his fellow stars were about to bail.

“Once the strike is officially called, we’re going to walk obviously in solidarity”.

“That’s why we moved this [event] up because we know the second it’s called, we’re going home,” he said.

Amazing audio of Cleo's rescue, plus Premier owes her a new pair of shoes

WA Police have released audio of the moment 4-year-old Cleo Smith was rescued. One officer can be heard reassuring Cleo as they pick her up, saying “I’ve got you bubby”, while another asks Cleo, “What’s your name, sweetheart?” To this, she responds, “My name is Cleo”, to which the officer responds, “Your name is Cleo”, while another says “Hello Cleo”.

It’s a heartwarming moment, as is the moment Cleo is carried outside the house she was found in, which police released video footage of on Wednesday soon after announcing she had been safely located and returned to her family.

"My name is Cleo." pic.twitter.com/xiy59x4kjP
— WA Police Force (@WA_Police) November 4, 2021

The moment Cleo was rescued 👏 pic.twitter.com/arusYi9kCa
— WA Police Force (@WA_Police) November 3, 2021

In a press conference earlier today, Detective Senior Sergeant Blaine said that Cleo was found awake in a room with the lights on, playing with toys. The home was in Carnarvon, the Western Australian town where the Smith family lives. She had been missing for 18 days when she was finally found around midnight on Wednesday.

Blaine said that Cleo appeared to be in good spirits, "From our point of view, I'm amazed she seems to be so well-adjusted and happy, it was really, heart-warming to see.

“She is playing in the backyard, exactly how you would expect, like how my daughter did when she was four-years-old."

Premier Mark McGowan had the opportunity to meet her on Thursday, bringing with him two teddies – one for Cleo, and one for her younger sister Isla. They named the teddies Cameron and Rod, after the detective who rescued her and the lead investigator on the case, but he wasn’t sure if those names would stick, joking to reporters that “Cleo didn’t seem too enamoured with those names.”

McGowan also revealed an embarrassing moment that transpired during the meeting. “I unfortunately trod on her new Barbie shoes and broke one of them, so I owe her a pair of shoes,” he said. Despite that unfortunate incident, the Premier said she was a “very bright, upbeat, sweet little girl” and described the Smith family as “very humble” and “very well adjusted” considering their ordeal.

“It was a lovely experience to meet her. She was, I thought, very well adjusted considering and the family were very appreciative of everything that has been done for them. They’re ... fundamentally decent, honest human beings ... they’re really lovely people and it’s great to meet them and acknowledge what they’ve been through.

“Obviously, there’ll be a way to go from here but they’re certainly on the right pathway.”

Image: WA Police

"No hesitation": WA Premier announces huge reward in Cleo Smith search

Image: Instagram

A $1 million reward for information about missing four-year-old Cleo Smith has been offered by The Western Australian government.

The decision comes as the search enters its sixth day. The focus has now been switched to the prospect the little girl was abducted.

The ground search around the campsite north of Carnarvon in WA’s Midwest was back in full swing on Thursday.

It’s becoming increasingly unlikely that Cleo will be found alive around there.

Acknowledging someone must know something about her disappearance, the WA government is now offering a $1 million reward.

“All Western Australians’ thoughts are with Cleo’s family during what is an unimaginably difficult time,” WA Premier Mark McGowan said.

“We’re all praying for a positive outcome.”

“We want to ensure police have everything they need to solve this case and that’s why my government has no hesitation in supporting police with this reward offer.”

The reward is for $1 million for information resulting in finding Cleo or leading to arrest and conviction of the person or persons involved in her suspicious disappearance.

It is the equal largest reward offered in WA history.

A number of other high profile disappearances and murders have also attracted a $1 million reward, including for information about the murder of 11-year-old Gerard Ross in 1997, the disappearance of 12-year-old Lisa Mott in 1980 and the disappearance of Lisa Govan in 1999.

Evidence is mounting in the Cleo Smith case that a third party was involved.

Police say there is crucial evidence that includes the tent were Cleo, her mother Ellie, stepfather Jake, and baby sister Isla were sleeping. The zipper on the front of the tent had been opened to a height that made it impossible for Cleo to have opened it herself.

Added to that, the little girl’s sleeping bag was missing and has not been found.

Cleo was last seen inside the tent around 1:30 am on Saturday when her mum gave her a drink of water.

At 6 am they awoke to give the younger child a bottle, Cleo was gone.

A massive land and sea search was mounted in rough country with a treacherous coastline.

Twenty registered sex offenders are currently living in and around the town of Carnarvon and have all been questioned.

The state government have offered million-dollar rewards before but never this soon after a suspected crime was committed, signalling the urgency to find Cleo quickly.

“I urge anyone who knows what happened to little Cleo to come forward with the information police need to find her.”

Duchess Catherine dazzles in red frock at musical premiere

The Duchess of Cambridge took a night off from the chaos of motherhood and palace life, stepping out to the opening night of the new London production of 42nd Street, which served as a fundraising event for the East Anglia Children’s Hospice (of which Catherine is royal patron).

Of course, all eyes were on the young royal’s fashion choices, and she certainly didn’t disappoint. Kate took a risk with a tea-length red dress, perfectly matching the red carpet, and it absolutely paid off. She paired the lacy Marchesa frock with matching Kate Spade earrings and a burgundy clutch and pumps.

The mother-of-two was presented with a pair of golden tap shoes from the musical’s producers Michael Grade and Michael Linnit as a thank you for sparing the time to attend. “We all would like to thank you all for the magnificent reception to our little show tonight. More specifically we would like to thank the Duchess of Cambridge for making our very special evening a very memorable occasion.”

Kate also met with some of the young children who will directly benefit from the money raised on the night. “I feel very good about meeting Kate,” 12-year-old Ollie told reporters of his meeting with the Duchess. “She’s very pretty and I want to talk to her about the hospice and how I like going there. I also want to tell her about Pokémon.”

Premiers and chief ministers ban together and call for Australia to become a republic

State and territory leaders have signed a joint declaration calling for an Australian head of state, in a move that has been hatched by the Australian Republican Movement.

WA Premier Colin Barnett is the only state leader who hasn’t lent his name to the statement, which reads, “We, the undersigned premiers and chief ministers of Australia, believe that Australians should have an Australian as our head of state.”

Australian Republican Movement chair Peter FitzSimons contends this is a clear declaration of desired independence from the Commonwealth, by almost all state and territory leaders.

"It is time to get moving, and I must say I was thrilled by how enthusiastic the premiers were," FitzSimons said. All of Australia's political leaders now support an Australian head of state, including [Prime Minister] Malcolm Turnbull and [Opposition Leader] Bill Shorten. Never before have the stars of the Southern Cross been so aligned in pointing to the dawn of a new republican age for Australia."

The declaration is expected to reignite debate of an Australian republic.

Related links:

Massive wave highlights just how dangerous Sydney’s Figure Eight Pools can be

10 captivating photos observing different animal’s eyes in extreme close up

81-year-old gran returns to childhood town for one last game of knock and run

"Return of the Catalina'' film to have southern premiere in Wanaka

Warbirds Over Wanaka is hosting the South Island premiere of the film Return of the Catalina, which tells the story of top secret long-distance flights to England after the fall of Singapore in World War II.

Warbirds Over Wanaka general manager Ed Taylor says the November 4 screening at Cinema Paradiso brings attention to the unsung war heroes who reconnected Australia and New Zealand to their northern allies.

The screening is a fundraiser for the NZ Catalina Preservation Society, which looks after New Zealabnd's only airworthy flying boat. It has been a crowd favourite at Warbirds Over Wanaka International Airshows.

"The Catalina is returning to the airshow in 2016 after a major refurbishment so will be a special sight, especially seeing it landing on the lake," Taylor said.

The Catalina crews provided a vital lifeline for the allied war effort, carrying secret cargo and VIPS across enemy territory in unarmed flying boats for up to 32 hours.

They were in the air for so long they were named Double Sunrise Flights.

Daniel Bunker's feature length documentary follows a band of aviators as they restore and fly a 70-year-old Catalina flying boat from Spain to Australia in order to recognise the unacknowledged war heroes.

First appeared on Stuff.co.nz

Related links:

8 iPhone photo tips you’ll want to know about

Social media good for older people’s health

8 people who utterly failed at technology
