66 million-year-old perfectly preserved dinosaur embryo found

Images: Courtesy Shoulin Animation & Getty

Scientists are showing off a perfectly preserved dinosaur embryo fossil that was preparing to hatch from its egg, much like a modern-day chicken.

The embryo fossil, nicknamed “Baby Yingliang,” was discovered in Ganzhou, Jiangxi Province in southern China, and is believed to be at least 66 million years old.

Researcher Dr. Fion Waisum Ma told the AFP News Agency that this discovery is “the best dinosaur embryo ever found in history.”

According to a study, researchers at a Chinese mining company, Yinagliang Group, found the egg fossil more than 20 years ago, but put it in storage with other fossils for 10 years.

When construction began on the company’s natural history museum, the fossil storage was sorted, and museum staff pulled the dinosaur eggs from the collection for closer examination. That’s when they noticed some bones on the broken cross section of one of the eggs.

Researchers say the egg belonged to a toothless theropod dinosaur, or oviraptorosaur. Ma and fellow colleagues found Baby Yingliang’s head below its body, with its feet on either side and back curled. This posture is familiar in modern birds but not previously seen in dinosaurs.

Researchers believe the animal was on the verge of hatching, but it was likely preserved when it was buried by a sudden mudslide.

Oviraptorosaurs, one of the closest relatives to the bird, evolved earlier from small, feathered dinosaurs. This group of dinosaurs was still blossoming and diversifying during the last few million years before an asteroid struck Earth about 66 million years ago, wiping out the dinosaurs.

The baby dino measures about 27 centimetres long and is currently on display at the Yinglliang Stone Natural History Museum. Most likely a herbivore, it would have grown to be about three metres long if it lived to adulthood.

“We were surprised to see this embryo beautifully preserved inside a dinosaur egg, lying in a bird-like posture. This posture had not been recognized in non-avian dinosaurs before,” Waisum Maof of the University of Birmingham, told CBS News.

Despite fossilised dinosaur eggs having been found during the last 100 years, a well-preserved embryo is extremely rare, the researchers said in their study. Paleontologists have found them over the years only six times.

This incredible Rube Goldberg machine is timed perfectly with Tchaikovsky

Rube Goldberg machines have entertained us for years with their intricate, complicated and convoluted ways of completing tasks or getting from A to B.

But one creative machine maker has just taken it to the next level, perfectly syncing his contraption to Tchaikovsky’s “Waltz of the Flowers” from The Nutcracker.

Mark Robbins, a YouTuber and “kinetic artist” from Minnesota in the US has made a name for himself on the popular video sharing website for using ordinary objects like wooden blocks, magnets and marbles to create incredible moving artworks.

The one you’re about to see is the result of what must’ve been hours and hours (if not days) of hard work, which Robbins himself admitted drove him a little mad.

“After listening to parts of this song hundreds of times to match things up, I went a bit crazy,” he captioned the incredible video, which you can see below. Prepare to have your mind blown!

Tell us in the comments below, have you ever made a Rube Goldberg machine?

TV shows that ended perfectly

Many TV shows don’t get the gift of a perfectly planned ending – too often they’re unceremoniously cancelled, or given the flick prematurely, leaving audiences wondering just what might have been if the writers had been given ample notice that the end was coming. Unfortunately, it’s rare for a TV show’s ending to satisfy, so if you prefer not to be disappointed, then these are the shows you should be adding to your list. Obviously, spoilers abound. You have been warned.

1. Friends

The Friends finale was one of the last big television events. With anticipation high, and tens of millions of people tuning in around the world, the stakes were high. Fortunately, the writers played it perfectly, finding a way to end the series that felt like an ending for us, but a new beginning for the characters we’d loved for 10 years. Gathered in Monica and Chandler’s empty apartment as they all prepare to move on to the next chapter of their lives, the emotion is high, and when all is said and done, we’re left with the poignant shot of six keys left behind – never to be used by our friends again.

2. Six Feet Under

If you’re familiar with Six Feet Under, you’ll no doubt be aware of the familiar episode openers that always feature a death. In keeping with the series’ exquisite style and power to move its audience, the series changed things up for the final episode. Instead of opening with a death, it began with a birth. Then, the final ten minutes were dedicated to showing the deaths of each of the lead characters we’d grown to love – flashing forward into the future in what is one of the most sublime television endings ever aired.

3. The Sopranos

This ending was much discussed and argued in the days and weeks following its airing. Controversial isn’t quite the right word to describe it, but it certainly stirred up passion amongst fans of the mobster drama. A television that made its name with violence and bad language was expected by many to go out with some kind of bang. Instead, the show’s final moments occur in a diner, with Tony Soprano and his family waiting to order. The sound of the diner’s door opening announces the arrival of someone else in the diner, right before a now infamous fade to black. Arguments still rage about whether it was Tony’s daughter, or someone arriving to kill him. The not knowing is what makes this finale so perfect.

And special mention goes to M*A*S*H: The final episode of M*A*S*H was watched by over 120 million people in the USA alone, and millions more around the world, as families gathered around their televisions to say goodbye to this long-running sitcom.

What’s your favourite television ending?

5 tips to help you perfectly organise your freezer

Freezers can be an incredible tool when it comes to saving time in the kitchen, avoiding food waste, and saving valuable dollars. But a disorganised freezer can be worse than no freezer at all. After all, if you’re not making the most of your freezer, the money it costs to run are eating into any savings it might be making for you. That’s why we’ve put together a list of some simple things you can do to make your freezer more efficient.

1. Label, label, label

If you’re not labelling the food in your freezer, you’re skipping a simple step that could save you so much time during meal prep. Instead of hunting around, trying to figure out which container has the meatloaf, a sticky label applied to the container or bag before it gets the big freeze eliminates all the fuss.

2. Portion control

There’s something so satisfying about the ability to reach in to your freezer and pull out the perfect amount of meat/sauce/rice for your next meal. Many different plastic bags can lead to a shambles on the shelves, and ends up wasting an awful lot of plastic, which clutters up landfill. So give this a try: fill a zip-lock bag with whatever you wish to freeze – sauce, mince, etc – then break it into single-serve portions inside the bag. When you need a little pasta sauce, open the bag and squeeze one of the portions out. Voila – portion control with a minimum of mess and waste.

3. Categorically organised

If you don’t organise your freezer by food type, you’re missing a handy trick. Try stacking prepped meals on one side, raw meats on the other, berries and dessert together, and bread in the middle. Odds are you’ll always know exactly where to look when you next go to the freezer.

4. Flat-out like a lizard

Instead of trying (and failing) to stack lumpy bags of food – they will fall – take care to lay things down flat to freeze them. Press the food to fill all the space of the bag so that it freezes as flat as possible. Then, you can easily stack them on top of one another, or even vertically inside a basket/container.

5. Vacuum-packed

If you find yourself constantly baffled by what’s in a frosted over container, then it might be worth investing in a vacuum sealer. Aside from locking your valuable food away in an air-tight environment, the plastic’s proximity to the contents makes it laughably easy to see exactly what’s inside. You’ll never defrost the wrong thing again.

Do you already use any of these organisational methods in your freezer? Share your best freezer tip in the comments.

Related links:

5 new uses for baking paper

Amazing tricks that will change your kitchen habits

20 things around your home with surprising cleaning powers

Couple married for 56 years perfectly describe love without using the word love

We all know love when we feel it but saying “I love you” is the easy part. After all, it’s only three little words. Truly expressing how you feel is a little harder – especially without using the world “love” itself.

As part of a Valentine’s Day campaign earlier this year, Hallmark asked real-life couples to describe their relationships without using the world “love”. In this video, Bob and Kim, a couple who’ve been married for over 56 years, are asked separately about each other. They then come together to watch their answers and well, things start to get a bit teary for them (and for us). It’s clear their feelings are so perfectly in sync that these two not only truly love each other but belong together.

“They say two become one and that really has happened,” Bob says.

“He's a part of me... I can't imagine life without him,” Kim says.

Related links:

People aged 0 to 100 define what is love

Old school dating expressions that have different meanings now

83-year-old couple prove it's never too late to tie the knot

2 tips to make perfectly-cooked rice

Rice can be one of those infuriating grains to cook. For those who cook rice on the stove, it can be a constant battle against overcooking and crunchy grains to get it <just> right.

The team at Oh, Sweet Basil have discovered two genius hacks to take the guess work out of cooking rice.

Tip 1: Rinse and drain

If your rice often comes out clumpy, with grains stuck together, Oh, Sweet Basil believes the answer is to drain it more thoroughly.

“Wash it a few times until the water runs clear, and then set it aside for 20 minutes or until no water remains,” says writer Carrian.

“Washing the rice rinses a lot of the starch off of the rice, which allows it to cook without clumping.”

Tip 2: Add lemon

To stop rice from turning dull coloured while cooking, add lemon juice.

“During the cooking process you can also add 2 drops of lemon juice which will not only help keep the rice from sticking together, but it will help the rice become bright white instead of dull!”

Related links:

Salmon quiche

Orange, ricotta and rosemary cheesecake flan

Apple berry cream-cheese scrolls

10 steps to perfectly pack carry-on luggage

As more airlines opt to charge additional fees for check-in baggage, there’s never been a better time to travel light.

Learn how to pack like a pro with this simple, step-by-step guide.

Step 1: Measure up

Before you get started, make sure your suitcase fits with your airline’s carry-on luggage size restrictions. For example, Jetstar allows bags that are 56c high x 36cm wide x 23 cm high. Failure to comply can result in a fine, not to mention pre-flight frustration.

Step 2: Favourites first

Take a look at what your normal wardrobe staples are. If there’s a particular outfit you wear all the time at home, pack that first.

Step 3: What matches?

Rifle through your wardrobe for items that match your staples. Add them to the pile.

Step 4: Edit

Lay the items on your bed with the staples in a row at the top, and each item’s matching pieces underneath. Remove any double ups or items that don’t go with at least two staples. Consider versatility and whether the fabric is appropriate for the climate of your destination. A jumper that can be dressed down during the day or finish a dinner-time look is perfect. Opt for multi-tasking pieces.

Put any items you’re unsure of to the side in a ‘maybe’ pile.

Step 5: Embrace packing squares

Packing squares are small fabric cases that allow you to easily separate types of clothing. They’re a great travel hack to organise carry-on bags. You can find them at most travel specialty outlets or online retailers like ebay.

Stock up on a minimum of three packing squares- two large and one small. Use the two large squares for tops and pants/other, and keep the small square for socks and underwear. It’s a good idea to buy packing squares in different colours, so when you open your luggage you can select which one you want at first glance.

Note: don’t forget to put the clothes you’re going to wear on the flight to the side!

Step 6: Layer

Time to layer your bags, so that each item has its place. It’s best to put heavier items at the bottom of the suitcase, so that all clothes stay relatively in place when in transit. Layer shoes and appliances at the bottom, followed by the two clothing packing squares, with toiletries at the top. Keep any items you might want to use in transit- like an extra cardigan- in a front pocket.

Step 7: Prevent leaks

Divide toiletries in their own clear bag and make sure they fit within the airline’s size restrictions, which is a maximum of 100ml in Australia. Toss out aerosols and razers- all of your luggage will go through customs so you’ll need to buy these items when you land at your destination.

Prevent liquids from leaking by unscrewing the lid and covering the opening with a double-layer of cling wrap, before screwing it back on.

Protect any cords or important devises in clip seal bags.

Step 8: Review your ‘maybe’ pile

Take another look at your ‘maybe’ pile- the clothing that didn’t quite make the edit of must-have items. If you have additional room in your bag add two of these items in.

Step 9: Wear heavy items

If you’re heading to a cold climate destination, heavy items like big coats and boots might tip your luggage over the limit, not to mention take up precious space. Keep these items to the side to carry or wear on the flight.

Step 10: Make the most of an extra handbag

Most airlines permit one carry-on bag and one small handbag. Make the most of the extra handbag and use this for easy-access items on the flight, like books and ear plugs.

Remember to check in online before your flight! Since you’re travelling without check-in luggage you can express the queues at the airport.
