Legendary Star Wars and James Bond actor passes away

The galaxy far, far away has dimmed a little with the passing of Michael Culver, a distinguished British actor whose name became etched in the annals of cinematic history, particularly for his role in the iconic 1980 film Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back.

Culver, who portrayed Captain Needa, the unfortunate Imperial officer, met his demise in one of the franchise's most memorable scenes at the hands of Darth Vader. However, his legacy extends far beyond the realms of science fiction, encompassing a career spanning over five decades of stage, screen and political activism.

Born in 1938 in Hempstead, North London, to esteemed parents within the theatre industry, Culver was destined for a life under the spotlight. His father, Roland Culver, was a notable West End stage actor, while his mother, Daphne Rye, served as a casting director in London-based theatre. Following in their footsteps, Culver honed his craft at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, laying the foundation for a prolific acting career.

Culver's journey in the performing arts began in the late 1950s, with appearances on Broadway in Shakespearean classics such as King Henry V, Hamlet, and Twelfth Night. His talent soon graced the West End stage in 1962, marking the start of a distinguished theatrical career. Transitioning to the small screen, Culver made his onscreen debut in 1961, captivating audiences with his versatile performances in British television series and movies.

However, it was Culver's portrayal of Captain Needa in The Empire Strikes Back that solidified his status as a cultural icon. Despite his character's brief appearance, Culver left an indelible mark on audiences worldwide, immortalised in one of cinema's most unforgettable moments. His confrontation with Vader, culminating in a chilling demise, remains etched in the memories of countless fans, a testament to Culver's ability to captivate audiences with his presence.

Beyond his intergalactic exploits, Culver's talents graced a multitude of productions, including notable roles in Sherlock Holmes, A Passage to India, Secret Army, and even appearing in two James Bond movies – From Russia With Love and Thunderball – in uncredited roles. His versatility and dedication to his craft earned him admiration and respect from peers and audiences alike. Yet, Culver's contributions extended beyond the realms of entertainment; in the early 2000s, he shifted his focus to political activism, leveraging his platform to advocate for causes close to his heart.

Despite bidding farewell to the limelight, Culver's legacy endures through the countless lives he touched and the memories he forged on stage and screen.

An extended message on the Alliance Agents Facebook page, who represented Culver, read as follows:

"We are very sad to confirm the passing of our friend and client Michael Culver. A career spanning over 50 years with notable roles in Sherlock Holmes, A Passage to India, Secret Army and of course one of the most memorable death scenes in the Star Wars franchise. Michael largely gave up acting in the early 2000's to concentrate his efforts into his political activism. It's been an honor to have represented Michael for for the last decade and to have taken him to some of the best Star Wars events in the UK and Europe. A real highlight was taking Michael to Celebration in Chicago in 2019. He was lost for words when he saw his queue line with nearly 200 people waiting to see him. We worked with Michael just 3 weeks ago at his last home signing with our friends at Elite Signatures. Michel died on Tuesday 27th February at the age of 85."

"We miss him."

His passing leaves a void in the hearts of fans and colleagues, a reminder of the fleeting nature of life's curtain call. As we reflect on his remarkable journey, let us celebrate the life and legacy of Michael Culver, an actor whose talents transcended galaxies and whose spirit will continue to inspire generations to come.

In his memory, let us heed the timeless words of Captain Needa himself: "We shall double our efforts."

Rest in peace, Michael Culver. The force will always be with you.

Images: IMDB / Wookiepedia

My Captain! Our fearful trip is done..."

The Pogues, founded in 1982 by MacGowan and a group of like-minded musicians, redefined the musical landscape with their fusion of Celtic punk, traditional Irish melodies, and rock'n'roll energy. I don't know how we will do it without you but we will," he ended the tribute, before asking loved ones to share "a note that was a comfort or joy" that they shared with Casey.

He also shared details of Casey's memorial service and revealed his wife's last act of kindness, where she hoped to "celebrate" her life by setting up a fundraiser to help pay off others' medical debt.

"We will celebrate her life by anonymously purchasing medical debt and then anonymously forgiving it, hopefully with a bonfire if they will let us," Andrew wrote.

As of today, $47,343 out of their $50,000 goal has been raised in honour of Casey.

Tributes have poured in from loved ones in the comment section of her post.

"Casey, in April 2019 on a phone call, you dreamed such big dreams for a book I didn’t yet believe in. They all came true. Your authors and colleagues were so lucky to have your humour, wit and light," wrote one friend.

"You have left a beautiful legacy and you will be deeply missed. All my love to your family and your beautiful baby Grace. ❤️"

"Casey you were so funny and sharp and beautiful and that light that shone through your eyes lit up the world," wrote another.

Images: Instagram

Original Lois Lane passes away aged 96

Phyllis Coates, a trailblazing actress known for her iconic role as Lois Lane in the early days of television's superhero adaptations, has passed away at the age of 96.

Her legacy as the first Lois Lane continues to captivate the hearts of fans worldwide. Coates, born Gypsie Ann Evarts Stell on January 15, 1927, in Wichita Falls, Texas, left an indelible mark on the world of entertainment.

Coates' journey into the world of showbiz began in the 1940s when she ventured to Hollywood. Her early career saw her working as a chorus girl, where she honed her talents and stage presence. Notably, she supported the United States Organisations (USO), touring the country and entertaining the brave men and women of the US Armed Forces and their families.

A decade later, Coates transitioned into film and earned small but significant supporting roles in movies like Smart Girls Don't Talk (1948) and My Foolish Heart (1949). Her versatility was on display as she also appeared as Alice McDoakes in several Joe McDoakes comedy shorts.

In 1951, Coates had a pivotal moment in her career when she was invited to audition for the role of Lois Lane in the low-budget feature film Superman and the Mole Men. Starring alongside George Reeves as Superman, this movie was essentially a de facto pilot for what would become the iconic "Adventures of Superman" series.

Coates's portrayal of the tenacious Daily Planet reporter captured the imaginations of audiences, making her an instant sensation. She brought depth and charisma to the character, establishing a template for future interpretations of Lois Lane. Her presence on screen, alongside Reeves, created an enduring partnership that would forever be etched in the annals of television history.

However, after the first season of Adventures of Superman, Coates made the difficult decision to leave the show due to conflicts with producers and other projects she had on her horizon. The show continued for an additional six seasons, with Noel Neill taking over the role of Lois Lane. Tragically, plans for a seventh season were abandoned following George Reeves's untimely death in 1959.

Coates's contribution to the entertainment industry extended far beyond her time as Lois Lane. She made numerous appearances in popular TV shows of the 1950s and 1960s, such as The Lone Ranger, Lassie, Leave It To Beaver, Hawaiian Eye, Rawhide, Perry Mason, The Untouchables, The Virginian, and Death Valley Days. Her ability to adapt to various roles showcased her talent and versatility.

In the 1970s, she further solidified her presence with a role in the TV-movie The Baby Maker, starring alongside Barbara Hershey. Her remarkable career in entertainment continued through the years, concluding with her final on-screen appearance in two episodes of Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman in 1994.

Phyllis Coates was not only a talented actress but a woman of resilience and determination. Throughout her life, she was married four times and is survived by her daughters, Laura and Zoe, as well as her granddaughter Olivia. Her legacy as the original Lois Lane of television remains a testament to her enduring impact on the entertainment industry.

Image: Getty

We will forever hold his memory in our hearts."

We are incredibly saddened to hear of the passing of Sir Michael Gambon. Phelps hailed Gambon as both a legend on and off the camera, describing him as funny and always willing to share his knowledge.

Gambon embarked on his acting career in the early 1960s, initially treading the boards of the stage before transitioning to television and film. His filmography boasted remarkable performances, such as his portrayal of a psychotic mob leader in Peter Greenaway's The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover in 1989 and his portrayal of the elderly King George V in Tom Hooper's The King's Speech in 2010.

Despite an early start in engineering apprenticeship, Gambon's passion for acting remained unwavering. He recounted to The Herald newspaper in 2004 that he always knew he would become an actor. His breakthrough came in 1962 when he auditioned for the legendary Laurence Olivier, who subsequently appointed him as one of the founding members of the National Theatre at the Old Vic, alongside emerging talents like Derek Jacobi and Maggie Smith.

Gambon's reputation soared on the stage, with his portrayal of Galileo in John Dexter's Life of Galileo in 1980 being a standout moment. In the 1980s, his lead role in the TV series The Singing Detective garnered widespread acclaim, earning him one of his four BAFTA Awards. Additionally, he clinched three Olivier Awards and two Screen Actors Guild Awards for ensemble cast performances in Gosford Park (2001) and The King's Speech.

Acknowledged for his contributions to drama, Gambon was honoured as a Commander of the British Empire in 1992 and subsequently knighted in 1998. Despite these prestigious titles, he often displayed a mischievous side, weaving tales such as showing fellow actors a forged signed photograph of Robert De Niro, among other playful antics.

In 2015, Gambon retired from the stage due to long-term memory issues, yet he continued to grace the screen with his talent until 2019. In a 2002 interview, he expressed that his work made him feel "the luckiest man in the world".

Images: Getty / Instagram

Little House on the Prairie star passes away

Hersha Parady, renowned for her role in Little House on the Prairie, has passed away at the age of 78.

According to a statement provided to The Hollywood Reporter by her son, Jonathan Peverall, Parady passed away at her residence in Norfolk, Virginia on Wednesday August 23. Her son had been actively seeking financial assistance before her demise, as Parady had been diagnosed with meningioma, a prevalent type of brain tumour.

Peverall initiated a GoFundMe campaign with the intention of aiding his mother's escalating medical expenses. In a heartfelt plea on the fundraising page, he recounted how the illness had depleted her vitality, memory and vibrant demeanour, rendering her predominantly bedridden and struggling with day-to-day tasks.

Relocating his mother to his own home, Peverall worked diligently to ensure she received the necessary medical attention. He emphasised that the associated costs extended beyond medical procedures, encompassing aspects such as moving expenditures, at-home nursing care and medical equipment.

"While we contemplate a surgery to potentially ameliorate her condition, the path to recovery is an arduous one," he stated, acknowledging the substantial financial burden posed by these circumstances. Balancing a full-time job and caring for his three children added to the challenge, yet he reassured that they were providing the best care they could, regardless of external contributions.

"Rest assured, we are taking care of her to the best of our ability, and we will continue to do so, regardless of any contributions made here," Peverall wrote. "This GoFundMe is about improving my Mom’s quality of life and giving her the support she needs during this difficult time. It's also about showing her that she is not alone in her fight.

"Her family and friends have been here supporting her through everything, but there is only so much help she is willing to accept from the people she loves. My Mom has always been a fiercely independent woman, and asking for help isn't in her nature. That's why I'm stepping in to do it on her behalf."

Peverall expressed his gratitude and urged supporters to rally around Parady, demonstrating that her on-screen "Little House" family was united in this battle, just as she had been a presence in their lives through the show.

In an update dated August 1, Peverall shared that his mother had undergone a "successful" surgery. However, complications arose as Parady developed pneumonia during her recovery, leading to her admission to the intensive care unit. Unfortunately, her condition deteriorated to a point where she couldn't regain full consciousness. The medical team at the hospital launched an investigation into her condition.

Peverall maintained ongoing communication with the medical professionals, seeking insights to guide the best decisions for her care. Despite the trying circumstances, he expressed hope and called upon others to remain optimistic.

Parady embarked on her career in theater after graduating from Berea High School in 1963. Her journey took her to Los Angeles, where she secured a role opposite Jon Voight in a production of A Streetcar Named Desire. Subsequently, she transitioned to the silver screen, featuring in an episode of Bearcats!.

However, it was in 1977 that Parady achieved widespread recognition for her portrayal of school teacher Alice Garvey in the fourth season of Little House on the Prairie. Appearing in 35 more episodes, her character, Alice, met a tragic end in season six, perishing in a fire. The actress also appeared in other shows including Kenan & Kel, The Phoenix, and The Quest, and movies like The Break and The Babysitter's Seduction.

Parady is survived by her son Jonathan Peverall and her three grandchildren.

Images: GoFundMe / Instagram

Sandra Bullock mourns the passing of her longtime partner after private illness

Hollywood star Sandra Bullock's beloved partner, Bryan Randall, has passed away at the age of 57, with the heart-wrenching news confirmed by his grieving family in a statement shared on Monday.

“It is with great sadness that we share that on Aug. 5, Bryan Randall passed away peacefully after a three-year battle with ALS,” the statement read.

“Bryan chose early to keep his journey with ALS private and those of us who cared for him did our best to honour his request. We are immensely grateful to the tireless doctors who navigated the landscape of this illness with us and to the astounding nurses who became our roommates, often sacrificing their own families to be with ours. At this time we ask for privacy to grieve and to come to terms with the impossibility of saying goodbye to Bryan.”

The statement was signed with a poignant, "His Loving Family".

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a merciless neurological affliction that ravages motor neurons that command delicate voluntary muscle movement. Regrettably, there is currently no remedy for the condition.

Bullock, aged 59, crossed paths with model-turned-photographer Randall when he was summoned to capture her son Louis’ birthday celebration in the early days of 2015. Their connection was immediate and profound.

The mother-of-two, and an actress who has fiercely guarded her privacy over the years, chose to unveil fragments of her relationship's intimacy during a candid appearance on Red Table Talk in 2021.

“I found the love of my life. We share two beautiful children — three children, [Randall’s] older daughter. It’s the best thing ever,” Bullock said at the time.

“I don’t wanna say do it like I do it, but I don’t need a paper to be a devoted partner and devoted mother … I don’t need to be told to be ever present in the hardest of times. I don’t need to be told to weather a storm with a good man.”

She added that Randall was also a superb “example” to her two children: “He’s the example that I would want my children to have... I have a partner who’s very Christian and there are two different ways of looking at things. I don’t always agree with him, and he doesn’t always agree with me. But he is an example even when I don’t agree with him... I’m stubborn but sometimes I need to sit back and listen and go, ‘You’re saying it differently but we mean exactly the same thing.’

“It’s hard to co-parent because I just want to do it myself.”

"He was so happy, but he was scared. I'm a bulldozer. My life was already on the track, and here's this beautiful human being who doesn't want anything to do with my life but the right human being to be there."

Images: Getty
