Unlocking Japan: Insider tips and mistakes to avoid for first-time travellers

Traveling to a new country for the first time can be both exciting and a little overwhelming. With so much information online, it can be tough to keep track of what to do and what to avoid.

While it is important to consider the rules of etiquette in Japan, there are a few uncommon things that you might miss if you're a first-time traveller.

Here are a few of our do's and don'ts:

DO use a luggage transfer service to travel "hands-free"

Japan is all about efficiency, and one of the things you can do to make sure you can travel more freely is to use a luggage transfer service.

We recommend Yamato Transport a luggage transfer service that delivers all of your bags from the airport to your hotel and from hotel to hotel.

Prices depend on the weight and size of your bags, but for same-day delivery, it was around $40-50 AUD for two 30kg bags.

Depending on where you are staying, your hotel may or may not provide the Yamato services directly, but if they don't, you can always check with the nearest Family Mart as some convenience stores will do it for you.

Alternatively, you can search for the nearest Yamato on Google maps.

It is important to note that there may be delivery delays depending on road and traffic conditions, and in some cases they don't do same-day delivery to the airport, so it's good to double check.

DON'T listen to the influencers

With the rise of influencer culture, a lot more restaurants and tourists spots have become even more popular.

Avoid queuing in line for over an hour for the hottest restaurant that's always "so good" and pull out Google or Apple maps, as you can find more hidden gems that the locals visit and are actually worth your time.

DO bring cash

Although most places accept card, places like Kyoto - the ancient capital - still mostly take cash.

A lot of tourist spots like Kiyomizudera, some markets, and buses in Kyoto only take cash.

On another note, if you have an IC card like the Suica or Icoca, you can also use these as a form of payment at certain vending machines, shops and restaurants. (It's kind of like using your Opal card to pay for things).

DON'T lose or damage your JR Pass

Most travel blogs recommend that you get the JR pass ,which is a rail pass that offers unlimited rides on the JR trains for one, two or three weeks, and allow you to travel nation-wide.

What they don't tell you is that they only hand out physical passes that you cannot lose or damage, as they will not re-issue another card until your current one expires.

With the cost of the JR passes increasing in October, it might also be worth booking one-way travel tickets instead, as they might be cheaper depending on which region you're travelling to.

DO bring good socks and wear your comfiest shoes

There is a lot of walking involved, and sometimes lifts can be hard to find – especially at certain stations – so make sure you wear shoes with a lot of padding (or whatever's best for you).

You will have to take off your shoes more often than you think, especially in changing rooms and certain traditional accommodation. So leave your hole-y socks at home or wear slippers wherever you go!

DON'T book that morning flight

Check-in for a lot of places is usually at 3pm and you want to avoid the morning rush, especially if you're catching public transportation.

These are a few of our tips, are there any we've missed?

Images: Getty/ Supplied

"I can’t a fjord it": Inside one of the world’s most extreme restaurants

One of the world's most extreme restaurants has gone viral and not only for its unique location and shape, but also its exclusive dining experience that's eerily similar to 2022 horror film The Menu.

Restaurant Iris is located inside a giant silvery orb in Hardangerfjord, the second largest Fjord in Norway.

The four-storey structure, called the Salmon Eye is inspired by - you guessed it - the shape of a fish eye, and it is quite a sight to behold.

The Salmon Eye is covered in 9,000 steel plates to emulate fish scales, weighing a whopping 1,256 tonnes and an impressive diameter of 25 metres, with one sub-surface floor that boasts a panoramic view of the Fjord.

The restaurant itself can only be accessed by an electric boat off the shore of Rosendal, as guests are treated to "an exclusive expedition dining-journey" which offers an 18-course meal and panoramic views.

The 24-seat restaurant is run by Head Chef Anika Madsen, and prior to having their main meal, guests are taken to the chef's boathouse on the nearby island of Snilstveitoy, for a "welcoming snack".

The menu is designed to showcase "the most local ingredients possible", which reflects Madsen's "commitment to sustainability" and her "passion for discovering new ingredients from the ocean".

Mari Eriksmoen posted the viral video on TikTok which has racked up over eight million views.

"This spectacular just opened in the middle of the Hardangerfjord in Norway," she started in the clip with a shot of the structure floating in the middle of the fjord.

She described the experience of walking into the restaurant "like entering a spaceship," and was mesmerised by the "insane views".

Once the evening kicks off, guests indulge in a multi-sensory experience where they were instructed to pick a "cracker" hanging from the ceiling after watching a "short movie about food waste".

Another TikTok user compared it to the extraterrestrial spacecraft from the 2016 sci-fi film Arrival.

However many other users compared the dining experience to 2022 horror film The Menu, where a group of guests eat at an exclusive restaurant on a remote island and face dire consequences.

"Did we learn nothing from The Menu?" commented one user with the crying face emoji.

"I know how this movie ends," wrote another user.

"I can’t a fjord it," joked a third.

The dining experience aims to "blend gastronomy and activism on a global scale" as they hope to raise awareness on the the challenges and threats to the global food system.

"The menu at Iris reads like a story, " a statement said.

"A story about the challenges and threats to the global food system, but also with ideas and suggestions for future innovations, that can help bring us closer to solving them."

The tasting menu itself is priced at 3,200 Norwegian Krone ($316) with an optional wine pairing for 2,500 Norwegian Krone ($247).

For those who want to visit the Salmon Eye, but don't want to dine in, they can buy a ticket for a two-hour "learning experience" at the centre priced at 349 Norwegian Krone ($34).

Images: Salmon Eye Website/ Instagram, TikTok

Make sure you remove old flight tags

Reddit user aurelius said, “Not a secret, just common sense; the reason some bags miss their flight or get misrouted is because passengers don't remove old tags. It confuses handlers as well as the conveyor belt scanners. I see it happen all the time.”

4. It’s a good idea to be kind to employees

Reddit user ihatcoe said, “The nicer you are to us, the more we can do for you… Your neighbour is noisy? Tell us nicely and we might be able to get you a better seat.”

5. Buy or fly on a Tuesday in the US

Redditor Drama_Llama said, “I work Revenue Management for an airline. On average, the cheapest time to BUY a ticket is Tuesday afternoon. The cheapest time to FLY is Tuesday, Wednesday, or Saturday. This applies to US flights in my experience.”

6. If you’re travelling with a pet, put its name on the carrier

Redditor RabbitMix said, ““If you checked your dog there's about a 30 percent chance it's terrified before it even gets on the plane, who knows how scared it gets during the actual flight. Bag room agents will usually try to comfort a scared animal, but all we can really do is talk to it, so if you write your pet's name on their carrier it usually helps a lot.”

Images: Getty

Mother’s car stolen with baby still inside

A woman who suffered injuries while trying to stop an allegedly stolen car with a baby in the backseat said her “blood ran cold” when she realised what was happening.

Phone Halson said she and her sister were out for a day at the zoo in Yeppoon, Queensland on April 19, 2023, when the incident occurred.

Speaking to Today, Halson said, "As soon as we got out of the car we heard tyres screeching and a woman screaming, so me and my sister ran over. I had my son in my arms,”

"At first we saw the baby's capsule laying on the ground and we were thinking, 'Oh my God, this baby has been hit’."

She said she and her sister then saw a woman screaming, "They took my baby”.

"We are trying to console this mother still in the loading bay where you get your groceries, and the car did, like, a turnaround," she continued.

"It has come flying through the exit-way. Me and another woman were still standing there. We were trying to call out, 'Stop, stop, there is a baby, stop', and she wasn't stopping.”

Halson said she turned to protect her son, who was still in her arms when she was struck by the car.

She revealed she suffered fractured ribs and internal bleeding and went through a two-week recovery period.

The allegedly stolen car then returned, and Halson said the mother was “absolutely hysterical”.

"It was madness. There were people trying to jump in front of the cars. Some succeeded in getting the baby," she said.

"But, yes, some people were just screaming in horror. Other people were crying. There were some chasing after the car. It was absolute madness.”

She said it was one of the most terrifying experiences of her life, although added that when the mum was reunited with her baby, it was “beautiful”.

"You could see the relief on her face as soon as the woman put that baby in her arms," Halson said.

"She just pretty much melted holding that baby.”

Fortunately, the baby was left unharmed as the car drove away.

Authorities said that around 4 pm that same day, they discovered an allegedly stolen grey Nissan Patrol at Bungundarra, north of Rockhampton, and arrested a 24-year-old woman and a 36-year-old man.

The 24-year-old Cobraball woman has been charged with one count each of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, abduction of a child, and driving without a licence.

The 36-year-old Mount Morgan man has been charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

They have both been denied bail and are due to appear in court on April 20.

Daughter discovers life-changing hack inside deceased mum’s closet

Cynthia, from the US, was cleaning out her mum’s closet a year after she passed away and discovered the secret system that will make you go: hang on a minute, that’s pretty smart.

If you’re tired of seeing piles of “technically clean” clothes lying around waiting to be washed, this system is perfect for you. All you need is a hanger, some clothes pegs, and a pen.

“[My mum] numbered clothespins and would put them on the hanger of an item she wore. Once she wore it 3 times … in the wash it went. This kept her from piling up clothes in a chair,” she shared in a post to a Facebook group.

Many were impressed with this simple tidiness trick and shared their own hacks.

“What a great idea! I put the hanger backwards after the first wear and into the laundry after the second. Your mum's method may be even better,” wrote one person.

“'I use different colour hangers. Whites are fresh, red has been worn once, and for a short period of time,” commented another.

One woman shared that she uses dividers to separate parts of her closet for clothes she wears often, and clothes she doesn’t.

“I use the 'left' system - I check the left side of my closet every six months because I hang everything I wash to the right of a separator. You can also use them for clothes that need to go in the laundry,” she wrote.

Others have commented about their tried-and-true, which mostly include the sniff and stain test, with the general rule: “If it doesn't smell and has no stains, I guess I'm wearing it”.

However, others were horrified that people don’t wash their clothes after every wear.

“I personally can't wear anything (nightgown sometimes is an exception) without washing it. If I wore it for an hour, I have to wash it before wearing it again,” wrote one woman.

“Don't you wash most clothes after every wear? Maybe it's because I live in a hot country, but I would never wear a shirt twice. Jeans maybe, everything else is in the wash after every wear,” commented another.

Image: Kmart Hacks and Decor Facebook

Strange things happening inside your body

Our bodies do an amazing job of keeping us healthy and happy. How they do that however can be a little on the stomach churning side. Here are five completely normal but slightly disgusting things your body is doing right now.

Producing huge amounts of sticky mucous – While we only really associate mucous with having a cold, our body is producing it constantly. Up to one litre a day is made to help prevent pathogens from making their way into our bodies.

Processing food using gastric juices – The path from your mouth to the other end is quite remarkable. After you eat, the food travels to your stomach where it’s broken down by litres of gastric juice. It then travels through metres and metres of intestine before finally being “expelled”.

Dust mites are colonising your eyelashes – According to recent research, there are two types of dust mite that make their home on your eyelashes where they live happily and uninterrupted for months on end.

Your tonsils are storing plenty of stuff – If you’ve still got your tonsils, chances are good they are stashing plenty of stuff. Tonsils are filled with nooks and crannies which often fill with dead cells, mucous and bacteria. While most people can manage this build up perfectly fine, others find that they develop tonsil stones from too much build up.

You’re producing litres of saliva – The body seems to love producing liquid. Case in point? Saliva. We produce one to two litres of the stuff a day to help break down food and aid digestion.

Related links:

Best high-protein foods for your diet

An easy at-home weights workout

The simple thing that's proven to fight depression

What's inside the $126k Oscars gift bags?

For many actors, being awarded an Oscar is the greatest gift of their career.

However, if an actor misses out in their category, it doesn't mean they'll walk away with nothing.

The Oscars' gift bags have long been jam-packed with a selection of luxury goods, bringing the total value of the goodies well into the six-figure mark.

This year is no exception, with the Los Angeles-based marketing company Distinctive Assets once again sending out its infamous "Everybody Wins" swag bags to the top nominees.

The bags are worth an impressive $126,000 this year, with 26 nominees in acting and directing categories going home with the goodies.

The celebrities will be offered thousands of dollars worth of luxury goods, and even more in vouchers for things like vacations and cosmetic procedures.

Among the contents is a luxury getaway to Canada, which is said to be valued at $40,000, vouchers for cosmetic procedures like liposuction and micro-needling, luxury skincare and gourmet foods, and and "the first-ever chocolate box with a personalised video embedded inside."

Also in the goodie bag is one unusual gift that has caused outrage with Indigenous Australian communities: a plot of land in regional areas of Australia.

Pieces of Australia is one of a number of brands to pay $4,000 to secure a spot in the Oscars gift bag, offering a small parcel of land in outback Australia as part of its “Conservation Gift Packs”.

The land parcels all come with a “certificate of land licence”, but the terms and conditions go on to state that “you have purchased a symbolic souvenir … of the land” and people who own a “pack” may not “take possession of the parcel; use the parcel; enter upon the parcel and/or the land without the licensor’s express written consent”.

The digital “member’s handbook” which comes with the pack referenced the Indigenous Carbon Industry Network (ICIN) without the company's permission, causing outrage with the traditional owners of the land.

In a statement, ICIN said it “has not granted permission for any of our information, publications or photos to be reproduced to support the Oscars ‘Goodie Bag’ or ‘Pieces of Australia’.”

“The Indigenous Carbon Industry Network is a 100% Indigenous-owned charitable company owned by 23 Indigenous organisations across Australia,” it said.

“ICIN is seeking legal advice regarding this matter and will be able to provide further statement once we have sought appropriate advice.”

The Pieces of Australia founder, Niels Chaneliere, said the intention of his organisation was to provide “land licence agreements (where there is no land title transfer at any point) as novel/symbolic gifts for people around the world to engage and participate positively in conservation efforts”.

Toxic pollutants can build up inside our homes. Here are 8 ways to reduce the risks

We know everything in our homes gathers dust. What you probably don’t know is whether there are toxic contaminants in your house dust, and where these might come from.

Our newly published research found most of the dust inside homes came from outside and contains potentially toxic trace metals such as lead, arsenic and chromium.

Worryingly, we found some contaminants can accumulate at higher concentrations inside homes than outside. This happened in homes with certain characteristics: older properties, metal construction materials enriched in zinc, recent renovations and deteriorating paint.

Fortunately, you can take some simple steps to reduce your exposure, which we explain later.

What’s in house dust?

Our study explored the connected sources, pathways and potentially harmful exposures to trace metals at homes across Sydney. We collected and analysed 383 samples from nearby road dust (51 samples) and garden soil (166), as well as indoor dust (166).

We found the dust in homes comes from a range of sources including outdoor environments and soil, skin, cleaning products, pet hair and cooking particles.
Nearly 60% of dust particles inside the homes originated from their immediate outdoor environment – it was dirt from outside! Wind, your shoes or your pets can carry in soil and dust-related contaminants.

The remaining 40% of home dust came from indoor sources. These included fibres from clothes, carpets and furnishings, cleaning products, skin and hair.

Some dust sources can carry a cocktail of potentially harmful contaminants including:

microplastics

persistent organic pollutants

perfluorinated chemicals (PFAS)

trace metals

bacterial communities

antimicrobial resistance genes.

The nature of the risk is related to how much of the contaminant you’re exposed to and for how long. The risks are greatest in children under the age of five. This is because they are small, closer to the floor and have frequent hand-mouth contact, which increases ingestion of contaminants.

How do contaminants build up in homes?

Industrial activity has left a marked legacy of contaminants in many city neighbourhoods. We analysed road dust, garden soil and vacuum dust samples from 166 homes in Sydney to see how this risk translated to inside homes. We used high-magnification microscopy and lead isotopic ratios to understand trace metal composition in the samples.

On average, concentrations of trace metals arsenic, chromium, copper, manganese, lead and zinc were all higher inside homes than outside. This means homes are not only “accumulators” of trace metal contaminants but also important sources of a significant proportion of harmful contaminants that we can be exposed to.

The lead isotopic ratios, or the lead “fingerprints”, of each home and its garden soil matched. This confirms the soil is the main source of lead inside homes.

Most of this lead is the result of the pre-1970s use of high concentrations of lead in paints and petrol, which contaminated many garden soils. Even low levels of lead exposure can be harmful. Lead levels in some Sydney backyards pose a risk for urban veggie growers and backyard chickens and their eggs.

High-magnification images of house dust showed mineral particles that have been blown in or tracked in on shoes. The rest of the dust was elongated fibres and hair from indoor sources.

Which homes are most at risk?

We also collected information about each house, relevant activities and renovations at the property. We found house age, proximity to the city centre and renovations had the greatest influence on levels of lead and other trace metals in the home.

All homes more than 50 years old had higher concentrations of arsenic, copper, lead and zinc in their garden soil and house dust. They are typically located closer to city centres, where early industrial activity has contaminated soils.

As older homes in former industrial areas are renovated, trace metal loads in these homes and gardens can increase. Walls and ceilings contain decades of dust. Old paint buried under more recent layers can also be released, causing lead exposure risks.

It is critical that home renovators take appropriate remediation steps or employ a qualified paint professional so lead dust isn’t spread across the area.

8 ways to reduce your risk

We spend about 70% of our time at home, which the pandemic has increased. Understanding the environmental conditions and contaminants we encounterand their effects on our health is more important than ever.

Armed with this knowledge, though, you can take some simple steps to reduce your exposure to contaminants in your home and garden:

regularly vacuum carpeted areas with a good vacuum cleaner fitted with a HEPA filter

wet mop and wet dust hard surfaces

mulch areas of exposed soil in your garden

use a quality doormat and wash it regularly, which can roughly halve the amount of lead in your home within three months

leave your shoes at the door as they can bring all sorts of nasties into the home

wash your hands and your veggies thoroughly

close windows on windy days

when renovating, use dust-mitigation strategies and personal protective equipment (PPE).

You can dig a little deeper into what’s in your own home environment by sending your soil to VegeSafe Australia or EPA Victoria’s GardenSafe for analysis. If you live in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom or Australia you can also send your vacuum dust to DustSafe for testing. You will receive a report outlining what was in your sample, with links and advice on what to do next where necessary.

This article originally appeared on The Conversation.

“There was a hole inside of me”: Rebecca Gibney's secret struggles

TV star Rebecca Gibney has opened up about her mental health, revealing she has battled with crippling panic attacks.

The Kiwi actress spoke about her struggles during Monday’s episode of This Is Your Life, saying her mental health began to falter in the 1990s when she was rising to fame and her marriage to musician Irwin Thomas broke down.

“It was pretty tough,” she told the program.

“And that was the hard thing, you do put on a front. My career was going great guns.

"I just couldn't verbalise there was a hole inside of me and I was tumbling into it."

The Packed to the Rafters star said that at one point she was having 15 panic attacks a day, and recalled one of her lowest moments on a flight from France to Australia on which she said she needed five Valium to “survive”.

"I had anxiety attack after anxiety attack. I was in such a hole, and I thought I'm not going to make it," she said.

"I was struggling, and I couldn't verbalise what was wrong. I just knew there was a hole inside me and it was getting bigger and bigger, and I was tumbling into it.

"I didn't even tell Mum, I couldn't even tell my family, because I couldn't explain it.

"It's so important that now, people talk about their struggles. Australia Zoo insider claims Bindi Irwin never wanted to follow her father's footsteps

An insider at Australia Zoo has claimed that Bindi Irwin never wanted to follow in the footsteps of her late father.

Justin Lyons, a cameraman who was there the day Steve Irwin died from a stingray attack in 2006, said in a recent interview that Australia Zoo is almost "cult-like" with Steve's imagery looming everywhere, reminding him of the day the original wildlife warrior died.

Among his stunning revelations, he claims the now 24-year-old Bindi initially "didn't really want" to follow in her famous dad's footsteps.

"Bindi and I spent a lot of time together," Justin told Woman's Day. "We'd go up to Far North Queensland and while they were doing whatever, Bindi and I would go off. She'd say to me, 'I don't really like bugs', but she was expected to do all this crazy stuff."

The allegations are a far cry from Bindi's own words, given that in 2018 she told Insider, "Ever since I can remember, I've always said, 'When I grow up, I want to be just like Dad.'"

However, some sources close to the Irwin family say there "may be a layer of truth" to Justin's comments.

"She couldn't have predicted it back when she was a little kid wandering around the bush with Justin, but the reality is Bindi is in a tough position," says an insider.

"She was a big star for a time in America and for a while it looked like she was set to break the big time in Hollywood, but now she's back at the zoo learning the ropes to take over when her mother retires, and as it is currently, its glory days are long over."

The insider claimed Bindi feels torn between two worlds, as she strives to make her parents proud with her ongoing work at Australia Zoo, but also the pull back to the US, where she has the potential to make a name for herself in her husband Chandler Powell's home country.

"Bindi and Chandler have often toyed with the idea of moving to the States, especially now they have baby Grace, and they've barely seen Chandler's parents in recent years," says a source.

"But Bindi feels tied to the zoo, whether she wants to be or not."

Expectation vs reality: Reporters share inside look at what cruises are like now

Four reporters have shared their experiences on some of the most popular cruising lines - revealing that their expectations weren’t quite met by the reality of their trip.

For Joey Hadden, who booked her first ever cruise on the Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas, her sessions of relaxing in the sun came with unexpected crowds and difficulties in finding a chair.

“I spent more time waiting in lines than I had anticipated. And I saw much of the world from behind other people's heads,” she wrote of her experience in Insider.

She shared that when she first boarded the ship and excitedly went to watch the ocean as they sailed away from the port, that tall, thick glass and not being able to find a spot to stand stopped her from doing so.

Fellow Insider reporter Monica Humphries said her experience with crowds aboard Carnival Vista, which was at partial capacity during her trip in July 2021, saw her waiting in long lines to disembark at each port and for help from the service desk.

Buffets were another source of contention and crowds for the two reporters, with Humphries also finding that issues with how food was labelled meant she accidentally ate meat twice despite asking what was in her food due to being pescatarian.
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; Baby found to have suffocated to death inside mum’s sling

A three-week-old baby boy most likely suffocated to death while inside a sling worn by his mother, a NSW coroner has found.

Harvey McGlinn was found pale and motionless when his mother, Tattika Dunn, unwrapped him from the sling at a Central Coast community health centre in 2019.

When Ms Dunn took her son in for his appointment, 25 minutes after arriving at the centre, the nurse with her began performing CPR.

After a doctor from the medical centre next door, paramedics, and a doctor from CareFlight continued attempts to revive Harvey for another 30 minutes, he was pronounced dead.

In findings delivered on Thursday, the coroner said evidence established that Harvey’s airway was compromised due to the position of his neck, with his head on his chin, in the sling.

Harvey was Ms Dunn’s third son with fiancé Bill McGlinn.

“It’s still very raw and my heart feels like it’s been ripped in a million pieces,” she wrote in a Facebook post a month after her son’s death.

She declined to be involved in the inquest, and there is no suggestion that duty of care was breached.

Staff at the health centre and the manufacturer of the sling were cleared of liability over Harvey’s death.

“Harvey’s relatively low weight may have resulted in less muscle and head control resulting in a difficulty in maintaining a patent airway from the way that Harvey was positioned in the sling,” the coroner said.

Witnesses told the coroner that the baby boy’s entire body was inside the loosely fitted sling.

According to the coroner’s report, RN (Registered Nurse) Kovacs saw Ms Dunn arrive “wearing a blue, sling-like carrier around her” with a “bulge-like presence” at the bottom of the sling, which Kovacs descried as below the level of Ms Dunn’s belly button and horizontal.

The nurse said that if she “recognised or believed there was a baby inside the sling” at the time, “she would have considered there was an element of risk” with how the baby was being carried.

RN Percy, a second nurse at the centre, saw Ms Dunn arrive at reception at 9.01am but stated that she “did not recognise that Tattika was wearing a baby carrier and instead thought that she was carrying a bag of some kind around her neck”.

Since the incident, the coroner said NSW Health has made changes to the advice about the risks of baby slings.

Deborah Martha, the NSW Health director of maternity, child and family, told the inquest that banning slings may be the only way to eliminate the risk, but noted that their customary place in some cultures and their use by some disabled people meant that a ban would be difficult.

A new acronym, TICKS, has been created to help prevent the same tragedy from occurring.

The acronym stands for Tight, In view, Close, Keep chin off chest and Supported, and advises parents on how to best use slings.

The baby should be held tight and high, in view of the parent at all times, be close enough to kiss, and in a position so that their chin is off their chest and that they back is well-supported and in a natural position.

Image: GoFundMe

A photographer has come across something quite sinister during a photoshoot of a multi-million dollar luxury estate.

Taking to Facebook, the photographer shared photos of a two-way mirror in the master bathroom of the home along with some cables and coax.

He thought it would have led him to a television as some people like to watch shows while enjoying a bath but it just left him with so many questions.

"Technically found in a closet, but a two-way mirror into a bathroom," the photographer wrote.

"I work in real estate photography and found this in the master bath of an older multi-million-dollar luxury estate for sale.

“There is a power strip along with cables and coax.

"It was easy to find, leading me to believe it was for a television (that was a thing) or if it were for video, it was consensual between all parties. Still really weird to find!"

Social media users were shocked at the finding and doubted that the cables were there for a TV but instead for something possibly worse.

"I SERIOUSLY DOUBT it was consensual if someone was filming there. If it was for a TV in a mirror I think I'd have left the TV THERE to prove what it was for!" someone wrote.

"That was for no TV with a mirror in front of it. And why not just a window if consensual? I don't think this was consensual at all and I find it terrifying!" another commented.

"That's a murder house," someone else wrote.

Later in the post, the photographer explained that these findings were quite common in expensive homes.

"Luxury homes had two-way mirror TVs. It was a thing back when box TVs were a thing," he explained.

Others agreed, giving examples of when they were in the same situation.

"Someone told me they had a TV in the mirror of her hotel bathroom," one wrote.

"I stayed in a fancy hotel in Chicago with a TV behind the mirror. It was pretty cool,” another shared.

"More than 5 years ago, it was 'in' for homes to have a TV hidden inside a mirror. I actually know a handful of friends that had 'hidden' TVs in their master bath," someone else added.

Images: Facebook

See inside the top-secret museum you can’t enter

While most museums aim to educate the public, there’s one that most of us won’t be allowed to enter that holds artefacts that have shaped key historical moments - and it’s located in the headquarters of the CIA.

The US intelligence agency has its very own in-house museum at its headquarters in Langley, Virginia, with a collection recently renovated to mark its 75th anniversary.

According to the BBC, whose journalists were among a select group given access during a media tour, the 600 artefacts on display include everything from old-school spy gadgets to models of the compound that housed Osama bin Laden.

The Cold War gadgets included the likes of a ‘dead drop rat’, in which messages could be hidden, a covert camera inside a cigarette packet, an exploding martini glass and even a pigeon with its own spy camera.

A pipe radio receiver is among the hundreds of items on display in the museum. Image: Getty Images

Some artefacts have never gone on display before, such as a model of the sunken Soviet K-129 submarine created for the expedition the CIA embarked on with billionaire Howard Hughes to recover the ship.

That mission was only partially successful since the submarine broke apart while a ship called the Gomar Explorer was trying to bring it up from the ocean’s depths.

"Most of what they found aboard that submarine is still classified to this day," Robert Z Byer, the museum’s director, told the BBC.

The mission also marked the creation of an iconic phrase the CIA still uses; after news broke of the mission before the rest of the submarine could be extracted, officials were told to say they could “neither confirm nor deny” what had happened.

A model of the K-129 submarine was created by the CIA during the mission to recover the sunken Soviet vessel and has never been displayed before. Image: Central Intelligence Agency

Others have only been declassified recently, including a model of the compound where al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri was killed earlier this year. The model was used to brief President Joe Biden on the proposed mission.

Though the museum moves chronologically through the CIA’s successes and failures, including the failed Bay of Pigs mission to overthrow Fidel Castro, some of the agency’s more controversial acts are less visible, such as the 1953 joint operation with Mi6 to overthrow a democratically-elected government in Iran, or recent involvement in the torture of terrorist suspects after 9/11.

The museum’s visitors are restricted to CIA staff and official visitors, with Mr Byer saying it serves to educate CIA officers on the agency’s history.

"This museum is not just a museum for history's sake. This is an operational museum,” he explained.

“We are taking CIA officers [through it], exploring our history, both good and bad," says Mr Byer.

"We make sure that our officers understand their history, so that they can do a better job in the future. We have to learn from our successes and our failures in order to be better in the future."

While the public isn’t allowed to visit it currently, officials say some exhibits will be available to view online.

Images of the museum are also expected to be shared on social media, with the aim being that members of the public are given the chance to unscramble the various coded messages displayed on the museum’s ceilings.

Image: Getty Images
