Man who filmed rollercoaster incident opens up

A traumatised witness of the rollercoaster accident at Melbourne's Royal Show has spoken out about the moment Shylah Rodden was struck by the ride.

Jordan was filming his sister and his partner having fun on the Rebel Coaster ride on Sunday when he captured the tragic moment the 26-year-old was hit by the rollercoaster travelling up to 70km/h.

Jordan said he "hasn't slept since" witnessing the horrific accident, as he saw Shylah get dragged halfway up the ride's next loop before falling nine metres to the ground.

He said he watched Shylah walk to the track and bend down to retrieve something, all without noticing the rollercoaster hurtling towards her.

"It all happened so quickly but so slowly. All of a sudden, I saw someone getting taken up but at the same time I'm thinking 'f**k, my sister, my partner'," he told 7News.

Ms Rodden remains in a coma with "horrific" facial injuries her family has described as "life-changing".

However, the thing that surprised Jordan was how Ms Rodden reacted immediately after she was hit.

"I didn't hear her scream. The screams that I heard came from onlookers, I think. It happened so fast," he said.

Shylah's father told Daily Mail Australia he suspects his daughter will be in a coma for a long time, as she battles to overcome her injuries.

“Obviously I can't talk to my daughter. She's going to be in a coma for quite a while,” Mr Rodden said.

“The injuries are horrific. Even the doctors have said they haven't seen anything as bad as this for a long time.”

Tragic details emerge in rollercoaster incident

New details have emerged about the woman who was struck by a rollercoaster at Melbourne’s Royal Show as her family hits back at online bullies.

Shylah Rodden remains in a critical condition after walking onto a section of the Rebel Coaster ride and being struck by one of the carriages shortly before 6pm on Sunday, suffering severe facial injuries.

Since the tragic incident, it has been revealed that the Rodden family lost Shylah’s brother, Jason, less than two months ago.

In a social media post dated July 27, Shylah said her “world came crashing down”.

"Dad sat me down and told me that my brother had passed away," she wrote.

"He wasn't just my big brother, he was my best friend, my everything, the person I looked up to and inspired to be like.

"He taught me so much in life, he showed me the difference between right and wrong and he was never afraid to tell me how he really feels.

"It doesn't feel real, I keep thinking you'll call me back."

Speaking to the media on Monday, Shylah’s father Alan Rodden said he was still unsure as to what to believe about the incident.

"There are a lot of stories going around and I don't know which one is true and if someone is covering their tracks," he told the Daily Mail.

Mr Rodden said his 26-year-old daughter’s injuries were “horrific” and that she was fighting for her life.

"The injuries are horrific. Horrific. She's brain-damaged. It's pelvic, her arms, legs, back, neck - there's hardly a thing that's not broken," he said.

"I just can't work out how the hell so much damage has been done. Even the doctors have said they haven't seen anything as bad as this for a long time."

Shylah’s sister Caisha told the outlet she was appalled at the online abuse directed at her sister, who is reportedly in a coma.

“It’s sad and disgusting to see the false stories and cover up when my sister is fighting for my life,” she said.

After police alleged she was trying to retrieve her mobile phone when she was hit, critics have said she was in the wrong, and Caisha said that rumours circulating about the details of the accident have caused more pain for her family as they struggle to cope.

“Definitely misinformation regarding the accident, which is really sad and causing more distress for our family,” she said.

“Shylah is in critical condition and we won't know more until later today as we will be discussing with police and giving some eye witness statements.”

Caisha also revealed that her sister had been working at the show that day and had been helping at a friend’s stall when she was sent on a break with another worker, with both deciding to take the opportunity to go on some rides.

With the incident still under investigation by WorkSafe, Brad Jenkins, the CEO of the Melbourne Royal Show has refused to speculate on details surrounding it, including whether the ride was surrounded by a fence or how Shylah got onto the tracks.

"That's a subject for WorkSafe and police. That's part of the investigation. I wouldn't want to comment on that until the investigation goes through the process,” he told ABC Mornings host Virginia Trioli.

Mr Jenkins did say that the operator of the ride was “devastated”.

"Carnival operators are very close knit,” he added.

“The show's about trying to put smiles on people's faces."

Image: Facebook

“I tried to protect her”: Victoria and David Beckham recount terrifying stalking incident

David and Victoria Beckham have opened up about their ordeal with a stalker who has been charged with harassing the former athlete.

The Beckhams are being represented by their lawyers in a Westminster Magistrate Court where 58-year-old Sharon Bell is facing stalking charges.

Bell believed she was in a relationship with Beckham and, after trying to contact him through a series of letters, claimed he and his wife were conspiring to “steal her eggs from inside her body”, as reported by The Daily Mail.

One of the letters Bell sent to the football star read: “I do love you and have done so since we were children.”

In a statement read to the court, the father of four said he doesn’t have a relationship with Bell and had never seen her before.

“I felt like the language in the letters was escalating and becoming more emotional and threatening towards me and my family and this worried me,” he said in his statement, addressing the impact the letters had on him.

The court also heard of a terrifying event involving the couple’s youngest child, 11-year-old Harper.

Bell reportedly appeared at Harper’s school in an attempt to abduct her.

“I’m Harper’s mother. I’m here to pick her up,” she reportedly told the school.

After police were called to the school, Bell was taken away.

A statement from Victoria was also read out in court by prosecutor Arizuna Asante, detailing the fashion designer’s concern for her young daughter following the incident.

“Due to the volume of attention [my husband and I receive from fans], we are rarely informed of the nature of communications from fans,” her statement read.

“I tried to protect her and I am worried about her.

“I am very concerned and anxious about Harper going to the park or being taken on school trips.”

Prosecutor Asante added: “She is now scared to go out and it has made things harder for her.

“She is worried, especially when Harper goes on school trips.”

Bell, who is currently detained under the Mental Health Act, was deemed a risk to the couple's children because she was “obsessed with the family” by District Judge Michael Snow.

Judge Snow charged Bell with stalking, though she will not face a criminal trial because of her mental health.

Image: Getty Images

Daniel Johns ordered to complete community service over drunk driving incident

Daniel Johns has narrowly avoided jail time with a 10-month intensive corrections order to be served in the community over a high-range drink-driving car crash.

The former Silverchair frontman has also been disqualified from driving for seven months and ordered to fit an alcohol-reading interlock device to his car for 24 months when he gets his driver's licence back.

In March this year, Johns was charged with high-range drink driving after a head-on crash at North Arm Cove, north of Newcastle.

When tested, he returned a blood alcohol reading three times the legal limit.

The police report states that Johns was heading north when his SUV crossed onto the wrong side of the Pacific Highway and collided with a light commercial truck travelling in the opposite direction.

Both vehicles ended up on a nearby nature strip, with the 51-year-old driver of the van and his 55-year-old female passenger being treated at the scene by paramedics.

Johns entered rehabilitation of his own will for four weeks after the crash and the court was told he had not touched alcohol since.

In his sentencing submission, defence lawyer Bryan Wrench said his client suffered from complex mental health issues from his time as a child musical star.

"He was a very successful musician. He was 14 when that came to him in an unwanted fashion and that came with attacks and vitriol," Mr Wrench said.

"He is a recluse, his house is his only safe place."

These defence submissions are what helped Johns avoid time behind bars, as Magistrate Ian Cheetham said Johns was best served to continue with psychiatric treatment in the community.

"There is no doubt a custodial sentence will not achieve an appropriate result for him or the community," Magistrate Cheetham said.

Ashley Judd opens up about traumatic incident in Congo jungle

Ashley Judd has gone into detail about her horrific experience after shattering her leg in the Congolese jungle, revealing it was locals who saved her.

The beloved actress, who was in the Congo to track endangered Bonobos, explained that she sustained “massive catastrophic injuries” after tripping over a fallen tree. “What was next was an incredibly harrowing 55 hours,” she said. She then told fans how she lay on the forest floor in agony, with the belief that her “internal bleeding would have likely killed her".

However, she says she owes all her thanks to a man named Dieumerci, who “stretched out his leg and put it under my grossly misshapen left leg to try to keep it still. It was broken in four places and had nerve damage. Dieumerci (“Thanks be to God”) remained seated, without fidgeting or flinching, for five hours on the rainforest floor.”

The actress then described another local man named Papa Jean who spent five hours searching for her, gave her a stick to bite on, then went on to readjust the shattered pieces of her leg.

“It took five hours, but eventually he found me, wretched and wild on the ground, and calmly assessed my broken leg. He told me what he had to do,” she wrote.

“I bit a stick. I held onto Maud. And Papa Jean, with certainty, began to manipulate and adjust my broken bones back into something like a position I could be transported in, while I screamed and writhed. How he did that so methodically while I was like an animal is beyond me. He saved me.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Ashley Judd (@ashley_judd)

She then went on to say a group of men improvised a hammock and spent three hours carrying Judd through the forest to find transportation.

The actress’ story does not end there though, as she told fans that her dear friend, a man named Maradona, volunteered to ride with her for six hours on a motorbike and kept her from falling off.

She wrote: “Didier drove the motorbike. I sat facing backwards, his back my backrest. When I would begin to slump, to pass out, he would call to me to re-set my position to lean on him. Maradona rode on the very back of the motorbike, I faced him.

“He held my broken leg under the heel and I held the shattered top part together with my two hands. Together we did this for six hours on an irregular, rutted and pocked dirt road that has gullies for rain run off during the rainy season. Maradona was the only person to come forward to volunteer for this task.”

Judd wrote that she made the decision to come forward about the accident as a way to spread the word about “what it means to be Congolese in extreme poverty with no access to health care, any medication for pain, any type of service, or choices.”

“The difference between a Congolese person and me is disaster insurance that allowed me, 55 hours after my accident, to get to an operating table in South Africa,” she says, adding that villages in Congo lack not only electricity but “a simple pill to kill the pain when you’ve shattered a leg in four places and have nerve damage.”

The actress now lies in her hospital bed in South Africa, saying: “I wake up weeping in gratitude, deeply moved by each person who contributed something life giving and spirit salving during my gruelling 55 hour odyssey.”

"Major incident" declared as thousands ignore advice to stay away

Officials in southern England have declared a "major incident" after thousands of beach-goers flocked to local beaches.

Bournemouth and Sandbanks in Dorset were hit hard as crowds came to enjoy the hottest day of the year so far and ignored advice to stay away from the area.

By Thursday morning, more than 40 tonnes of waste had been removed from the coastline.

Council leader Vikki Slade said she was "absolutely appalled" by the scenes.

"The irresponsible behaviour and actions of so many people is just shocking and our services are stretched to the absolute hilt trying to keep everyone safe," said Slade in the statement.

"We have had no choice now but to declare a major incident and initiate an emergency response."

As the UK is slowly easing its coronavirus restrictions, groups of up to six people are allowed to meet up outside.

However, people are taking the newly eased up restrictions too far as people were found camping illegally overnight.

Slade compared the scenes to a public holiday.

"We are not in a position to welcome visitors in these numbers now or to deal with the full range of problems associated with managing volumes of people like this," said Slade. Special treatment for Weinstein amid fears of “another Jeffrey Epstein incident”

Convicted rapist Harvey Weinstein will reportedly be given special treatment as jail officials raise concerns over another possible “Epstein incident”.

According to TMZ, officials at New York City Department of Correction are taking extraordinary measures to monitor Weinstein amid fears of an event similar to the death of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who was found hanging in his federal jail cell at Manhattan’s Metropolitan Correctional Center in July 2019.

“The last thing you want is another Jeffrey Epstein incident,” a source told The New York Post.

“Harvey is going to be isolated as much as possible and will always have a detail with him throughout the prison. The "peculiar" incident in Prince Philip’s childhood that shaped his entire life

Prince Philip’s childhood was what one would describe as rocky, and when the royal was only a toddler, an incident occurred that would shape his entire life from that moment onwards.

Being a part of the Greek royal family at the time, Philip and his family had to flee the country during the war against Turkey.

Due to this, his uncle King Constantine I abdicated the throne, forcing Prince Philip’s father, Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark, to be exiled from the country.

In what one could only describe as manic, the Prince’s father and mother, Princess Alice of Battenberg, smuggled their daughters and baby boy out of the country.

Prince Philip's parents Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg

“He was only 18 months old, and I think he was, the story goes, he was smuggled out of the country in an orange crate,” said 9Honey’s royal columnist, Victoria Arbiter, in The Windsors podcast.

“So, it was quite an auspicious beginning to his life,” she said.

Growing up in the Parisian town of Saint-Cloud, the blonde hair, blue-eyed boy stayed with his immediate family for a few years before moving.

At the age of seven, Prince Philip travelled to London to live with his maternal grandmother, Victoria Mountbatten, in 1928. At the time, she was residing at Kensington Palace – the home of his grandchildren years later.

During this time, the Prince formed a close relationship with his uncle, Lord Louis Mountbatten, the man he credits for his marriage to the then Princess Elizabeth.

“He was raised by the Mountbatten family and passed from pillar-to-post a little bit, he had a bit of a rackety childhood,” said Juliet Rieden, author of The Royals in Australia.

“Philip really grew up in and out of boarding schools,” said Victoria, going on to say, “He didn’t have a warm family life – his father was largely estranged, it was his uncle Louis Mountbatten who raised him.

“It was a difficult childhood and I think that’s really where Philip became a survivor.

“It was quite a tragic childhood for someone in his position,” Ms Rieden told the podcast.

“You would think, ‘Oh, he’s born a Royal, he must have had an easy life, it must have been a great early start.’ But it really wasn’t, it was a very difficult life.”

Prince Philip at Gordonstoun School in Scotland

Philip went on to study at Gordonstoun School in Scotland, an all-boys boarding school which proved to be tough but surprisingly, the Prince enjoyed it.

“Philip embraced everything Gordonstoun had to offer. He killed it in sports, he killed it in academics, he was so well respected there, it spoke to his philosophy and embraced every element of it,” said Victoria.

“I think that’s where he really came in to his own.”

The bizarre incident that forced plane to make emergency landing

Of all the reasons a plane might be forced to make an emergency landing – severe weather, technical issues, a medical episode – this has to be the most bizarre we’ve ever heard.

A Transavia Airlines flight from Dubai to Amsterdam Schiphol was forced to divert to Vienna Airport after a fight broke over a passenger who allegedly refused to stop farting. Yes, you read that right.

Metro reports that the cabin crew failed to help the passengers after they complained, which led to the fight. Despite a warning from the pilot, the argument continued, forcing the plane to make an emergency landing.

Upon landing in Vienna, police boarded the plane to remove two women and two men whom the pilot described as “passengers on the rampage”.

The two women, sisters, are now taking Transavia to court over the incident, claiming they were unfairly removed as they were not part of the altercation.

One of them, 25-year-old law student Nora Lachhab, said being kicked off the flight was “humiliating”.

“We had no idea who these boys were, we just had the bad luck to be in the same row and we didn’t do anything,” she told De Telegraaf. “All I will say is that the crew were really provocative and stirred things up.”

None of the four passengers involved were charged, however all have been banned from flying with the budget airline in the future.

“Our crew must ensure a safe flight,” Transavia said in a statement. “When passengers pose risks, they immediately intervene. Our people are trained for that. They know very well where the boundaries are. Transavia is therefore square behind the cabin crew and the pilots.”

Flight attendant quits after toilet incident

A flight to Amsterdam from Birmingham, England was forced to turn back around after a passenger became “aggressive and abusive” during a bathroom emergency.

Fox News report that Tabberner and three of his “loud and rowdy” friends had boarded the Flybe flight earlier this year but when he was told to buckle up for takeoff, he immediately asked to use the bathroom. He was told to wait.

According to records from the Birmingham Magistrates Court, flight attendant Robyn Pascoe, who appeared in court on Monday, claimed Tabberner then threatened to pee “on the floor” if he wasn’t allowed to go.

Just a few moments after takeoff, Pascoe said she used the bathroom herself as the captain had given the OK for the flight crew to move about the cabin. But when she exited the bathroom Tabberner was waiting outside the door.

“I went to the toilet but when I came out he was waiting trying to get in,” Pascoe told the Birmingham Mail.

“I told him he had to go back to his seat as the seat belt signs were still on, but he kept saying, ‘You have been to the toilet, so why can’t I?’

“It was a confined area and he was waving his arms around aggressively and shouting. I felt terrified. I have experienced rowdy behaviour on flights before but nothing like this in seven years.”

Tabberner eventually returned to his seat, but another flight attendant took note of the incident and informed the pilot.

The plane was then diverted back to Birmingham and Tabberner and his friends were escorted off the aircraft by police, the Birmingham Mail reported.

Pascoe further claimed that Tabberner’s behaviour gave her such anxiety that she quit her job after seven years in the air.

Tabberner denied being aggressive toward Pascoe and told the judge that he was simply “dying to go to the toilet” and “literally bursting” as soon as he set foot on the plane.

He said he was “upset and confused” when he was told he needed to return to his seat.

Nevertheless, a judge found Tabberner to be at fault and ordered him to pay $2700 in fines, court costs and compensation.

Why incidents of “air rage” are on the rise

On New Year's Day, a kerfuffle on an international flight led a San Francisco-bound plane departing from Sydney to divert to Auckland.

On what would have been a 13-hour flight, an agitated middle-seat passenger – who was recorded on video – exchanged terse words with a flight attendant and was subsequently arrested when the plane made an early landing.

The encounter was the latest incident of air rage – something that flight attendants say is on the rise.

"The conditions on board just lead to more potential for air rage," says Sara Nelson, international president of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA.

Nelson ticks off the reasons: tight seating, fuller flights, alcohol consumption, fewer flight attendants, human nature.

"Any time you get a whole bunch of humanity packed in together there's opportunity for a conflict," Nelson says.

According to data from the International Air Transport Association, a trade association that represents 265 airlines and 83 percent of global air traffic, unruly passengers on planes worldwide increased 14 per cent in 2015 over the previous year.

In 2015, there were 10,854 reported cases of such incidents, or one in every 1205 flights. In 2014, there were 9316 incidents, or one per 1282 flights. Alcohol or drug intoxication was reported in 23 per cent of the cases; physical aggression was reported 11 per cent of the time.

Verbal abuse and failure to follow the instructions of the flight crew were cited in a majority of the incidents.

A recent study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States found that airplane design may play a role in air rage.

The study found the mere presence of a first-class section in a plane mattered: The chance of an air rage incident happening in economy is 3.84 times greater when there is a first-class section.

"Making class difference more salient can be bad for everyone," research author Katherine DeCelles says.

For the study, the researchers had access to a database containing about five years of air-rage incidents from a major airline. For every 1000 flights, there were 1.58 incidences of air rage in economy and .31 in first class.

The researchers found that when passengers enter the plane through the front and pass through a first-class section, rather entering in the middle of the plane and into their own designated section, the odds of air rage increase, both in economy and in first-class: Economy passengers are 2.18 times more likely to become unruly and first-class passengers are 11.86 times more likely to act out than when they board from the middle.

DeCelles points out that these results statistically account for a number of other factors that might relate to first class and boarding patterns, such as leg room, flight size and flight length.

In describing the emotions of the passengers in the reports, flight crews classified disruptive first-class passengers more frequently as "belligerent," and described economy upsets as "emotional outbursts." (Beyond the report, the researchers didn't have any additional information on the passengers' actual emotions or other factors, such as alcohol intake, says DeCelles.)

Based on the correlational results, DeCelles theorises that first-class passengers may have felt a sense of entitlement, which led to their reactions, while those in economy may have felt a sense of deprivation and frustration.

"We all know we live in a class-based society, but it's never quite so in your face as when you board an airplane," says DeCelles.

Whatever the cause, Nelson, who is also a flight attendant with United Airlines, says that employees are trained to handle passenger interruptions of all types, and they are also presented with the option of taking a self-defense class offered by the Transportation Security Administration.

She adds that the Federal Aviation Administration takes poor passenger behaviour seriously: Passengers who interfere with the duties of the flight crew could face criminal charges or be fined up to $25,000 by the FAA.

Any type of unexpected behaviour in-flight could be cause for concern, says Nelson. Flight attendants are taught that if someone is acting out, it may be a distraction for a larger threat.

"We are in a metal tube hurtling through this space, an object that has been used as a weapon of mass destruction," says Nelson. "That is the new world."

Do you agree with this research? Let us know in the comments below.

Written by Kate Silver. Harrison Ford involved in another plane incident

Hollywood actor Harrison Ford was involved in another plane crash on Monday in California.

The Star Wars veteran was in a “potentially serious" incident as he was piloting a single-engine private plane. Ford tried to land on the tarmac at the John Wayne Airport in Orange County when his plane came close to a passenger airplane with 110 people on board.

In a statement released to Variety, the FAA explained: "Air traffic controllers cleared the pilot of a single-engine Aviat Husky to land on Runway 20L at John Wayne Airport Monday afternoon. The pilot correctly read back the clearance."

"The pilot then landed on a taxiway that runs parallel to the runway, overflying a Boeing 737 that was holding short of the runway. The FAA is investigating this incident."

Ford has a history of plane-related incidents. In 2015, Ford crash-landed a World War II-era airplane on a golf course in Santa Monica, California, after the engine failed. He suffered a broken pelvis and a broken ankle due to the crash.

Ford also crash-landed a helicopter in 1999 during a flight lesson in Ventura County, California. Again, in 2000, Ford’s Beechcraft Bonanza scraped the runway during an emergency landing at Nebraska's Lincoln Municipal Airport.

Despite his track-record, Ford is respected as an excellent pilot in aviation circles.

Related links:

10 actors with surprising famous relatives

Famous biopics ranked from most to least accurate

7 actors who refuse to watch their own films
