Elvis’ Honeymoon Hideaway hits the market

The sprawling mansion that served as the hideaway for Elvis and Priscilla Presley has hit the market for just $US 5.65 million ($NZ 10 million).

The Presleys called the four-bedroom, three-bathroom home in Palm Springs, California, home for the first few days of their marriage, renting out the mansion for $US 21,000 in 1967.

Although he initially planned to use the home as the location of his wedding, he and Priscilla decided to tie the knot in Vegas instead after the media found out about his plans.

Complete with a spa, pool, multiple private terraces and spectacular mountain views, the Presleys spent four days honeymooning at the mansion, before Elvis had to leave for filming.

Hosting music icons isn’t the only claim to fame the mansion has though.

The house, designed by William Krisel in 1960, came with a futuristic design and modern amenities - including vacuum ports, an indoor kitchen grill, and wall-mounted radios - that made it ahead of its time and earned it the nickname ‘The House of Tomorrow’ in 1962 by Look Magazine.

In more recent years, the house has been branded as Elvis’ Honeymoon Hideaway and open to the public for tours.

Given its design features, it’s certainly a house you wouldn’t want to miss seeing.

Highlights include its spaceship-like winged roof, the stepped waterfall located at the centre of the house, carved-wood double-height entry doors, and a circular theme throughout.

The living room area boasts stacked stone walls, built-in seating, floor-to-ceiling windows, and a “futuristic steel beaker-shaped fireplace hood and floating hearth”, according to the listing.

The dining room area overlooks the living room from a raised platform and opens out to a terrace and the pool, while the kitchen boasts top-notch appliances and a circular centre island.

Each of the bedrooms comes with an ensuite, with two also featuring sprawling terraces and the main bedroom accessed via a grand staircase.

The home has been renovated in recent years, with many of its original architectural details being restored.

Images: Compass / Getty Images

Inside Amber Heard's remote desert hideaway

We've all learnt an awful lot about Johnny Depp and Amber Heard in light of the recent, very public trial.

As the trial has reached its conclusion, yet another interesting piece of information about Heard has made its way into the public domain.

Reportedly, the 36-year-old actor confirmed in her opening testimony that she lives in a sleepy town called Yucca Valley, which is located in the beautiful Mojave Desert. The town is roughly 200-kilometres east of Los Angeles and the rural locale is not a place where you'll find many A-listers.

The locale only has about 22,000 residents total, and it's known for its art culture, as well as its proximity to celebrated places like Joshua Tree, Coachella and Palm Springs.

The house itself was purchased by Heard in 2019; however, property records show the abode was bought through a trust attached to Heard's accountant.

Costing USD $570,000 ($795,000) at the time, the unique 2015-built residence hoasts three bedrooms, three bathrooms and sits on 24,281-square-metres of arid but beautiful land.

Features include a large open-plan kitchen, living and dining area with vaulted ceilings, fireplace and floor to ceiling windows that no doubt provide Heard with exceptional views of the surrounding desert.

Another distinct benefit of the property is a custom 34-metres bridge that enables occupants to cross a dried-up creek and access an elevated gazebo perched on a rocky hill.

Although Heard purchased the property back in 2019, the mother-of-one only started living in the house earlier this year.

Image: Domain

Michael Schumacher’s new $52 million hideaway

Champion Formula One driver Michael Schumacher is in the process of moving into a $52 million (NZD) mansion located in Majorca, Spain, nearly five years after he suffered a catastrophic brain injury due to a skiing accident.

Purchased by his wife Corinna, the mansion was previously owned by Real Madrid president Florentino Perez and is an estimated 161,000 square feet.

Schumacher, who has not been seen publicly since 2013, was in a medically induced coma for six months after his accident and has been incredibly private about his life since. It is said that he is receiving full-time care at his current home in Switzerland.

Schumacher’s lawyer told a court in 2013 that he “cannot walk” after a German magazine falsely claimed he could “walk again”. As a result, they were forced to pay Schumacher $86,000 dollars for invading his privacy.

Katia Rouarch, the mayor of Andratx (a municipality in Majorca), confirmed the Schumachers' purchase of the Spanish property to Swiss magazine L’Illustre.

“I can officially confirm Michael Schumacher is going to move into our municipality and that everything is being prepared to welcome him,” she said.

The mega mansion, which contains two swimming pools, a helipad and guest villa, is surrounded by scenic views and extravagant properties.

While it is not confirmed when the German racing legend will arrive, or how long he will stay, the location is memorable to the couple as Schumacher and his wife Corinna spent time on the island before his tragic accident.

German tabloid Bild claims that Corinna has bought the property in order to spend time with family and friends.

Real Madrid president Perez had bought the house for $43 million but decided to sell the property after the death of his wife Mari Angeles Sandoval.

Inside Oprah Winfrey’s new $11 million hideaway mansion

Billionaire Oprah Winfrey has splashed out on a waterfront property in the United States, on Washington's secluded Orcas Island.

Located between Seattle and Vancouver, it's one of the four largest islands that comprise the San Juan Islands archipelago.

It's not exactly a well-known location and for a mega-celeb like her, that's probably the point.

The twice Oscar-nominated actress and global philanthropist already owns three stately homes – in Hawaii, California and Colorado – but what's another cool $11 million if it buys you a little privacy?

Previously known as the Madroneagle estate, Winfrey's new property consists of two waterfront titles combined into a total area of 17.4 hectares, which includes 914 metres of private shoreline, reported Variety.

The main dwelling is a plush 678 square metre lodge-style home with four bedrooms, three bathrooms, powder room, soaring exposed beam ceilings in the living areas, kitchen with full-size pizza oven, a games room, library nook with floor to ceiling bookcases, and a wine cellar and tasting room.

It's basically the ultimate retreat with everything the media mogul and her entourage could need to relax.

Finished internally with rare reclaimed woods, hand-forged iron work and wooden floorboards reclaimed from the old Sears' building in Chicago, the home has a luxurious cabin feel.

Additional to the primary home is a contemporary 273 square metre guesthouse with four more bedrooms and three bedrooms. Dubbed "the gallery house", it's not difficult to understand the moniker when you consider its position high on the cliff overlooking the private beach.

But wait, there's more. The property also holds an enclosed "tea house" out in the garden, set overlooking the water, plus a large barn that houses a yoga studio and gym downstairs, and a woodworking studio upstairs.

According to marketing materials, the property also features a sauna, Asian-style garden, private hiking trails, a pond and a stream.

Scroll through the gallery above to get a sneak peek inside Oprah Winfrey’s new estate.

Written by Anabela Rea. The European summer hideaway you haven’t visited yet

Travel writer Ben Squires visits Vevey, a gorgeous Swiss town on the Swiss Riviera that provides the perfect destination for any traveller looking for a European summer hideaway.

Perched between Mount Pélerin and Lake Geneva, Vevey is one of the hidden gems of the Swiss Riviera, a gorgeous town that’s long been a haven to artists, writers, intellectuals and anyone looking to experience the finer things in life.

We arrived in the Swiss Riviera via the famous GoldenPass line train. Modern carriages have huge panoramic windows so you can savour every inch of the view, but we travelled in the elegant replica carriages of the Belle-Époque trains that used to run through these valleys, a classy throwback perfect for nostalgia enthusiasts.

The accommodation couldn’t have been nicer. We stayed at the elegant Hôtel des Trois Couronnes in Vevey’s old town, a gorgeous hotel with a history dating back to 1842. This place has played host to many distinguished guests over the years, and when you experience the refined, intimate atmosphere it’s easy to see why.

Lake Geneva really is something else, although one sight that at a glance may seem incongruent to first-time visitors is the giant fork protruding from the lake’s surface. Originally installed in 1995 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Alimentarium, the nearby food museum, the fork was embraced by locals and despite being removed a year later was reinstalled in 2008. It’s now become a permanent part of Lake Geneva, and has held the Guinness World Record for being the world’s tallest standing fork since 2014.

A stone’s throw away is the famous statue of Charlie Chaplin, a one-time resident who in many ways has also become an emblem for the town of Vevey. The statue next to the lake commemorates the 25 years the actor, screenwriter and film producer spent in the gorgeous region, who was denied re-entry into the US due to McCarthyism.

If you’re a fan of Chaplin, make sure you take the time to visit Chaplin’s World, a nearby museum dedicated to the life and times of the legendary artist that’s set on the estate he used to live in. Walk through the impressive multimedia displays that chart the highs and lows of his careers, before exploring his mythical mansion and taking a wander around the grounds he called home for so many years when he was exiled from the US.

There’s plenty to do in and around Vevey, but if you have time to explore the region it’s worth visiting Chillon Castle in Montreux, the most visited monument in Switzerland. This medieval fortress inspired the likes of Jacques Rousseau, Victor Hugo and Lord Byron, author of the famous poem “The Prisoner of Chillon”. Just mind your bag as it’s a haven for pickpockets!

It is hard to pick a highlight out of the visit, but the buffet lunch and wine tasting at Domaine Wannaz is an experience that will stay with me for a long time. Located in of Lavaux, the largest contiguous vineyard region in Switzerland, Domaine Wannaz is one of the many daringly constructed hillside terraces that have been UNESCO protected since 2007 and the food was creative, daring and most-importantly tasty. Some of the best examples have been included in the gallery above (although you might not want to look if you’re hungry).

Whether you’re staying a weekend or a month, Vevey is an idyllic option for anyone looking for a European summer getaway. It might not be the first destination that comes to mind when you think of Europe in summer, but you won’t be disappointed.

*The writer travelled courtesy of Switzerland Tourism.

Visit www.myswitzerland.com for more information about Switzerland.

And visit www.myswtizerland.com/rail for the Swiss Travel Pass which allows holders unlimited access to all Swiss public transportation including buses, boats and trains, up to 50% off mountain railways and cableways and free access to more than 500 museums around the country.
