Hard to watch! Paralympic champion given the worst gifts ever

A Spanish Paralympic cyclist has been given the worst trophy gifts in history, with his calm and collected reaction making waves online.

Ricardo Ten Argiles was last week crowned world champion in three separate events at the 2023 UCI World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland.

During the post race ceremonies, he was presented with two gold medals, along with two very surprising gifts from the event's major sponsor: international watch company Tissot.

The 47-year-old was gifted not one, but TWO watches in a fancy display case, despite having both his arms amputated at the forearm.

A video of Ten keeping a straight face while being handed one of the watches has started to spread across the internet with more than 800,000 views.

Not a very well thought gift. pic.twitter.com/hRhaTfnGsE

— Cycling out of context (@OutOfCycling) August 14, 2023

One video shows Ten standing on the podium and exchanging some friendly words with an official as he holds the watch case tightly between his arms.

Understandably, the mortifying moment has been met with outrage and black humour.

The athlete himself has been laughing off the incident and has embraced the way his social media pages have exploded with comments.

Many of the comments suggested that Ten regift the expensive watches at Christmas, while others wondered how officials at the event could've let the awkward gifts happen.

Despite the outrage from fans, Ten responded to one news story about the “tactless blunder” by writing on Twitter, “I am very happy to have won two TISSOTs, one for each arm, but above all for what it means for Paralympic cycling, total inclusion of the sport at the highest level”.

“Cruel disease”: Bruce Willis given heartbreaking new diagnosis

In a devastating statement on Instagram, Bruce Willis’ family have shared an update on his health, announcing that the actor has been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia.

Bruce’s wife, Emma Heming Willis, shared a picture of Bruce smiling on a beach, with a caption that provided their supporters news of the development in his health battle, and explained that his condition has gotten worse since his aphasia diagnosis in 2022. The same post was shared by Bruce’s ex-wife, Demi Moore, and daughter Rumer.

On behalf of herself and the “Ladies of Willis/Moore”, Emma wrote, “our family wanted to start by expressing our deepest gratitude for the incredible outpouring of love, support and wonderful stories we have all received since sharing Bruce’s original diagnosis.

“In the spirit of that, we wanted to give you an update about our beloved husband, father and friend since we now have a deeper understanding of what he is experiencing.

“Since we announced Bruce’s diagnosis of aphasia in spring 2022, Bruce’s condition has progressed and we now have a more specific diagnosis: frontotemporal dementia (known as FTD). Unfortunately, challenges with communication are just one symptom of the disease Bruce faces. While this is painful, it is a relief to finally have a clear diagnosis.”

In their full statement, the family explained that FTD is a “cruel disease” that is largely unheard of, although it is the most common form of dementia for individuals under the age of 60. Symptoms, which can worsen over time, include a loss of motor skills - from having trouble walking to muscle spasms.

“Today there are no treatments for the disease,” the family wrote, “a reality that we hope can change in the years ahead. As Bruce’s condition advances, we hope that any media attention can be focused on shining a light on this disease that needs far more awareness and research.”

“Bruce always believed in using his voice in the world to help others, and to raise awareness about important issues both publicly and privately. We know in our hearts that – if he could today -- he would want to respond by bringing global attention and a connectedness with those who are also dealing with this debilitating disease and how it impacts so many individuals and their families.”

The statement - from the hearts of Bruce’s wife, ex-wife, and five daughters - concluded with a plea for fans to go out and educate themselves on the disease, and to support the mission to help others, whether or not they had any experience with FTD themselves.

“Bruce has always found joy in life – and has helped everyone he knows to do the same,” they finished. “It has meant the world to see that sense of care echoed back to him and to all of us. We have been so moved by the love you have all shared for our dear husband, father, and friend during this difficult time. Your continued compassion, understanding, and respect will enable us to help Bruce live as full a life as possible.”

In response to the news, fans and fellow Hollywood stars came to share their love and support for the actor, as well as his loved ones as they all come to terms with the new diagnosis.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Emma Heming Willis (@emmahemingwillis)

“Thank you for sharing this with us. Aged care residents given 10 weeks to find a new home

Older Australians living in aged care have been forced out of their homes, after it was decided that the only facility in their small town would be shut down.

A Current Affair reported that the owners of Anglian Care, the only facility in the northern NSW town of Bulahdelah, gave families of residents ten weeks to find their loved ones a new place to live.

The decision has angered the community, with local resident Rod telling the program that losing “40 staff” and “40 local jobs in a small community” will be devastating.

Norma Hughes, a resident of the Cedar Wharf Lodge, told A Current Affair that she never imagined she would be asked to leave on the eve of her 90th birthday.

“I was going to finish my days here but that’s not happening anymore,” she said.

Her son Neil and daughter-in-law Lyn were also angered by the situation.

“The staff found out that day, I think I was the only one there that wasn’t in tears, they were all crying going ‘damn, what’s going on?’” Neil said.

“It was pretty sad for them; for everybody in a sense.”

Bob, another resident, passed away at the age of 99 shortly after his family was interviewed by A Current Affair.

His son-in-law, Kevin Carter, said the stress of being evicted was a heavy weight for him in his final days.

“Ninety-nine is a lot of age and how do you accommodate meeting the new nurse and staff? It’s quite frightening,” Mr Carter said.

Bulahdelah’s nursing home has been in operation since 1991, and the decision to close its doors came after the church reviewed its 11 aged care homes and found it wasn’t viable to continue operating.

The church said in a statement this was because the Federal Government wasn’t offering any long-term funding for small regional services like the one in Bulahdelah.

Though the closest facility is half an hour away, many residents will be forced to travel an hour away to Taree, meaning their loved ones will have to embark on two-hour round trips to visit them.

Rod told A Current Affair that a solution could arise through a “stay of execution”, but that he didn’t have his hopes up that Anglican Care and the bishop would change their minds.

“Potentially it could be saved … but they’re not flexible, they’ve made their decision and they won’t listen,” he said.

Now it seems the only hope for elderly Austraions in towns like Bulahdelah could come after the looming federal election, if the next leaders decide to funnel money into these areas.

Images: A Current Affair

Mum outraged after nine-year-old daughter given alcohol at a sleepover

A British mum has taken to the internet to vent her frustrations after her daughter was given alcohol at a sleepover without her permission.

Susan wrote on the Netmums forum about a birthday sleepover her nine-year-old daughter attended for a friend’s 10th birthday. She wrote, "My daughter attended a 10th birthday sleepover with five girls (mix of nine and 10 year old's) from school. I'm very friendly with all the mums. They had a great time and my daughter came back exhausted but in good spirits.

“During the day she told me bits and bobs of what they got up to and it all sounded lovely until she mentioned that she tried a snowball (Advocaat and lemonade) and I'm furious.

"At home she's had the odd sip of bucks fizz (champagne and orange juice) with me and my husband, but the mum has given my child (and other children) some alcohol without my permission. Worst of all my daughter thought it was her fault and got [very] upset."

The post attracted a lot of attention, with most commenters agreeing that Susan was right to be angry, with some even calling it child abuse and urging her to call the police or child protective services. One commenter wrote, "I agree that this was not on at all! At the very least, if she was planning on letting them try the snowball she should have checked with the parents first that it was OK."

Another mum shared her own experience in a similar situation, saying, "I'd also be absolutely livid. I've been there with my 14-year-old daughter. If there's alcohol involved the parents' permission should be obtained. I'd not be letting my child near that house again as trust would be completely shattered."

Others said they couldn’t see the issue as she had given her daughter alcohol in her own home, with one commenter saying, "I think if she is allowed a bucks fizz at home then a little snowball is not really that bad? You need to talk to your daughter about drinking alcohol and what is allowed and what isn't.”

In the UK, it is against the law to give children alcohol at home if they are under the age of five. That means that on private premises like homes, children aged five to 16 are allowed to consume alcohol, although Drinkaware and the Chief Medical Officers advise against it.

Image: hobo_018

The world is a safer place”: Couzens given UK’s most severe sentence

Warning: This story contains graphic content which may disturb some readers.

Wayne Couzens, the former policeman responsible for the kidnapping, rape, and murder of 33-year-old English woman Sarah Everard has been sentenced to life behind bars, with no chance of parole. Lord Justice Fulford handed down a whole life order, the most severe sentence in the UK, on Thursday, describing Everard’s murder as “devastating” and “tragic”, and Everard herself as an "intelligent, resourceful, talented and much-loved young woman".

Lord Fulford said, "First and foremost, Sarah Everard was a wholly blameless victim of a grotesquely executed series of offences that culminated in her death and the disposal of her body.”

Lord Fulford went on to Couzens’ actions in kidnapping Sarah, by using his position as a police officer to provide him with a pretext for stopping and questioning her. “I have not the slightest doubt that the defendant used his position as a police officer to coerce her on a wholly false pretext into the car he had hired for this purpose. It is most likely that he suggested to Sarah Everard that she had breached the restrictions on movement that were being enforced during that stage of the pandemic.”

Sarah was walking home from a friend’s house in south London on March 3 when Couzens pulled over his rental vehicle and stopped her. Couzens then falsely arrested her for breaching COVID-19 restrictions and handcuffed her before putting her in the car.

Couzens proceeded to rape and strangle Sarah before burning her body and clothes in an old refrigerator on land he owned before dumping her body. She was found in Ashford, Kent, roughly 100km south-east of London, a week later, following a dedicated search.

Sarah’s family released a statement following the sentencing, saying, "We are very pleased that Wayne Couzens has received a full life sentence and will spend the rest of his life in jail. Couzens held a position of trust as a police officer and we are outraged and sickened that he abused this trust in order to lure Sarah to her death. The world is a safer place with him imprisoned."

Her family had previously shared victim impact statements with the court, with Sarah’s mother Susan, expressing profound grief, saying, "Sarah died in horrendous circumstances. I am tormented at the thought of what she endured. In her last hours she was faced with brutality and terror, alone with someone intent on doing her harm. The thought of it is unbearable – I am haunted by the horror of it."

Sarah’s father Jeremy said he would never forgive Couzens for what he did to her. "The horrendous murder of my daughter, Sarah, is in my mind all the time and will be for the rest of my life. Sarah was handcuffed and unable to defend herself. This preys on my mind all the time. I can never forgive you for what you have done, for taking Sarah away from us."

In handing down the sentence, Lord Fulford said of Couzens, “Notwithstanding your guilty pleas, therefore, I have seen no evidence of genuine contrition on your part as opposed to evident self-pity and attempts by you to avoid or minimize the proper consequences of what you have done.”

Image: Metropolitan Police

The one thing Prince Harry has given up for his pregnant wife

Prince Harry has given up his love of alcohol by not consuming the beverage for the last three months, all to support his wife, the Duchess of Sussex.

The royal, who was known for his wild antics and his partying ways, reportedly stopped drinking alcohol the moment he discovered Meghan was pregnant.

Speaking to The Sun, a royal insider claimed, “Meghan obviously cannot drink during her pregnancy and Harry wants to be there to support here.

“When they are in London, they have been spending more nights in together as he cannot go out drinking with friends like he used to.”

The last time the famous couple were spotted drinking was in July, at an event in Dublin where they shared a glass of champagne together. The Duke and Duchess also caused a few whispers when they chose to skip Princess Eugenie’s wedding reception, an occasion where the alcohol was being served by the dozen.

View this post on Instagram

Established in 1916, @TarongaZoo is Australia's oldest zoological park – their commitment to conservation science has culminated in the development of the Taronga Institute of Science and Learning, whose work in forensic science has helped put controls in place to reduce illegal wildlife laundering. A tabloid regular, the young royal was often photographed stumbling drunk out of bars and night clubs.

In 2012, images of a naked Prince Harry were released to the public, after he was spotted at a Las Vegas hotel drinking heavily.

But it’s safe to say that his rowdy partying lifestyle is now behind him, as he prioritises his royal duties and his devotion to be a good husband and an even better father above anything else.

Meghan has previously spoken about her love for alcohol and a glass of wine, revealing in a 2015 interview, “It’s delicious and I enjoy it.”

Before adding, “Do the things you enjoy within reason. Know your body and what works for you and you’ll be fine.”

The Duchess also previously touched on her health and diet mantra in an interview with Best Health, where she admitted that she never wanted to feel “deprived” of the things she enjoys, because once you start placing restrictions on yourself, you start to “binge”.

Instead, she believes in balance as she encourages “lifestyle eating”, not dieting.

Duchess Kate reveals the unique nickname Prince Harry has given her

The royal family really are just like us, with each member of the family having a special nickname of their own. With Queen Elizabeth being known as “Lilibeth”, Duchess Meghan as “Meg” and Duchess Camilla as “GaGa”, the tradition of nicknames has now extended to Duchess Kate.

Speaking to BBC Radio One, it was revealed that Prince Harry likes to call Duchess Kate, “Cath” – a short form of her full name Catherine.

Presenter Scott Mills asked, “That really confused me because everyone else calls you Kate – all the press call you Kate. Is this a thing just in the family?”

“I’m not sure, actually,” said the Duchess. “I’m not that familiar with it, I have to say. But I’ll answer to most things, to be honest.”

The Duchess has previously revealed her childhood nickname: Squeak – a name that she shared with her pet hamster.

Speaking to the children at St Andrew’s School in Pangbourne, Berkshire in 2012, she mentioned that, “There was one called Pip and one called Squeak because my sister was called Pippa and I was Squeak.”

Though in her later years, the Duchess was known to prefer the name Catherine when being referred to, a name that Prince William still calls her by.

Do you have a special nickname? Royal wedding guests given seven pages of rules to follow

All major events come with logistical issues that need to be solved, and a royal wedding is no different.

To avoid any hiccups on May 19, when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle tie the knot, their guests have been sent a seven-page “critical guidance” booking, reported the Mail.

In the book, guests are advised on how to best enjoy the day and are informed that cameras and gifts are banned.

On the day of the wedding, guests must meet at the Windsor Farm Shop, roughly 5km from the venue, and they will then go through security checks and be asked to show identification.

Once they pass the checks, they will be ushered onto coaches to travel to Windsor Castle.

Items such as cameras, bulky bags and phones have been banned from the royal ceremony and reception.

The couple have asked for charity donations if guests wish to gift them with a present for their wedding. However, for those who are still hoping to give the royal couple a tangible present, they have been warned that gifts are not allowed to be brought in with guests.

"It should be noted that gifts cannot be brought to St George's Chapel or the Reception that follows at Windsor Castle.

"Guests are advised to seek further guidance on delivery arrangements for any gifts to Kensington Palace."

In the wedding invitation, the dress code was already communicated to guests, who must wear dress uniform, morning coat or lounge suit for men, and day dress and hat for women.

The “critical guidance” book also says that guests should not wear medals or swords when they go to accessorise their outfit.

Guests have also been warned that the toilet facilities will be unavailable during the wedding ceremony.

“Guests are advised that there are very limited toilet facilities in St George’s Chapel, but these are available for guests’ use between 9 am and 11 am at which point this facility will become restricted for the duration of the service.”

Have you ever attended a wedding with strict guest rules you had to follow? Tell us in the comments below.

The strangest gifts the royals have been given

If you thought you received some odd gifts for Christmas, they’re nothing compared to what the royals have been given in the past 12 months.

Gift giving is quite common practice when any member of the royal family makes a public appearance – but it’s not just flowers and chocolates.

In fact, there are entire reports written up about who received what, from whom, and on what occasion.

Young Prince George received clothes such as a waistcoat and shorts, toys including a hobbyhorse and Tintin figures – even a dream catcher.

Princess Charlotte was gifted a hobbyhorse too, as well as a toy pram, lollipops and a hair bow. Books and soft toys were the most common gifts for the smallest royals.

Duchess Kate was given figurines and an oven glove, along with a tea service and a traditional German cake known as bamkuch.

Prince William received gifts from the full spectrum, all the way from felt gnomes (two of them) to a replica cavalry sabre. As a couple, Kate and William received a framed Polish coat of arms as well as some commemorative coins.

Far from filling their own homes with all of these gifts, many are given to charities that could make use of them, while others are stored. Certain gifts are taken into the royal’s home, so perhaps Kate and William sat down to tea with some German cake while the kids rolled by on their hobbyhorses. We can only wonder what happened to the felt gnomes!

What’s the strangest present you’ve ever received? We would love to hear your story in the comments.

Why Princess Charlotte's future children won't be given royal titles

They both have official royal titles but while Prince George’s future children will also have royal status, Prince Charlotte’s children are unlikely to become princes or princesses.

“Royal titles are inherited through sons, so if Princess Charlotte has children they would not automatically inherit the titles HRH, Prince, or Princess,” Lucy Hume, associate director of etiquette experts Debrett's, explained to Town & Country.

This is the case with the Queen’s daughter Princess Anne's children Zara Tindall and Peter Phillips, who do not have HRH status, while Prince Andrew's daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, do.

However, there’s always exceptions to the rule as seen with Prince Edward and Sophie Wessex's children Lady Louise and James, Viscount Severn.

Ms Hume explained: “The monarch may offer to bestow a royal title upon his or her daughter's children.

“For Peter and Zara Phillips, the Queen offered to give them a royal title when they were born, but Princess Anne and Captain Phillips opted to decline this offer.”

Although Charlotte’s future children won’t automatically inherit a royal title, Prince William and Kate’s daughter won’t be overtaken in the line of success, even if the new baby is a boy.

A law change in 2013 before the birth of George means that male members of the royal family are no longer given preference.

Some of the worst parenting advice ever given

When someone we know has a baby, it can be difficult to resist the urge to offer sagely advice and helpful hints. When the new parents are our own children, however, the advice is often sought out, or expected. We’re sure you all have a bevvy of excellent tips for bringing up healthy, respectful, open-minded children, but here are some reminders that not all parenting advice is worth sharing.

1. Angry milk causes colic

A married pair of doctors warned, with sagely know-how, that a mother who breastfed her baby while she was angry would give her baby colic. The same pair (the Sadlers, in case you want to look them up), decided that a mother would run completely dry of milk if she succumbed to “worry, grief, or nagging.” So, basically, be a happy mother at all times or you’ll make your child sick and then cause them to starve.

2. High-rise baby cages

The Chelsea Baby Club were responsible for these terrifying contraptions, which sought to remedy the cramped conditions of 1930s London. If you don’t have room for your child to play outside, just hang them out the window in a cage. Yep, everything’s fine here.

3. Who’s a lardy baby? You are!

Newborn babies who came into the world at the start of the 20th century were in for a special treat: a head-to-toe slavering in lard. Parents were often told to cover their newborn in butter, olive-oil, or lard and not to wash them for two weeks. You know – to make sure their juices were well and truly sealed in.

4. Lefties are wrongies

Well into the 20th century, many experts, including psychologists, advocated for parents to re-train their left-handed children to be right-handed instead. The theory was that being left-handed was a decision made by “defiant” personalities. Studies showed that children who were forced to use their right hands often developed a stutter.

5. Mummy’s little socialist

A paediatrician named Walter W. Sackett Jr. published a book in 1962, Bringing Up Babies, in which he alluded to the unpatriotic nature of parents who did not enforce a rigid schedule upon their babies. This paediatrician advised new parents to never feed their child at night, no matter the age of the baby. Given up on dating? Then you need to read this!

Getting back into the dating game later in life can be a challenge, no doubt about it. When you continually put yourself out there only to be met with disappointment, it can be exhausting, disheartening and drive anyone to declare, “I give up!” It’s become so common that a phrase was coined: dating fatigue, which is defined as the result of continuing dating, over time, with perceived lack of success in finding a high quality partner. So if you’re suffering from “dating fatigue” and feeling discouraged from all the less-than-compatible fish in the sea, here are five tips to beat it.

Ease the pressure

If you turn up to every date with high expectations then the pressure is sure to mount. It’s not that you shouldn’t have high standards but don’t pin hope, dreams and expectations on one date. A date is just a date. It’s a meet-up with someone who you may or may not get along with. If you don’t expect to find the one at every date it will be much less stressful and exhausting. Just aim to have fun. If it turns out badly, then leave and have a laugh when retelling the stories to friend. If it turns out well, all the better.

Balance your perspective

The realities of dating, whether the traditional way or online dating, is that you will meet your fair share of bad eggs and have a few awful dates. People lie, people have less-than-good intentions and, well, with some people you simply won’t have any connection at all. Don’t take it as a sign or a reflection on you. Finding someone you have a connection with is difficult and sometimes you will have to sift through all the bad apples first. Prepare yourself for some disappointment and it won’t hit so hard, but when these moments happen, move pass them swiftly. There are good apples out there. Maintain a balance perspective and you should feel more control in the dating process.

Take some time for yourself

You know that saying “dating is a marathon, not a sprint”? If it’s a marathon then you need to make sure you take care of yourself. If dating is making you stressed, anxious or worried, then take a break! Schedule some freeze days (one week or two week blocks work) and stop all dating-related activities on these days. Don’t look at your online profile and stop chatting or texting. This is time for you to refuel and re-energise. Once you’ve spent a bit of “me time” next time you have a date, you’ll feel refreshed and enthusiastic.

Try other things

The dating game is just one way to find love. Open yourself up to new things that aren’t specific to looking for love and you might be surprise what follows. Volunteer, find a course to study, try meeting up with a hobby group and you’ll meet loads of new people. Friendship is the foundation of any good relationship so look for more friends. Who knows what might eventuate?

Don’t give up

If you are truly happy being single then that’s great – of course, you don’t need a partner to make you happy in life. But if you’re giving up because you’ve had several bad dates and it just seems too difficult to persist, then don’t! You aren’t going to find someone if you stop trying and if you do want to find a companion then resolve to not to give up. It doesn’t mean you can’t take a hiatus from dating but know that you’re coming back. You won’t find someone if you’re not open to the possibility so believe in the best about yourself and believe that someone great is looking too.

Related links:

25 ways to be happier (and why your relationship depends on it)

How to tell people about your divorce

Why some people take breakups harder than others

Shocking number of dying patients given unnecessary treatment

A review into end-of-life care by the University of New South Wales has examined doctors, patients and families from 10 countries around the world, has found a startlingly high number of terminally ill people are being given unnecessary treatment.

Data was analysed from 1.2 million patients worldwide, and found that more than a third of dying patients were being given needless and “excessive” treatments which had no impact on their prognosis.

The researchers behind the report believe the over-use of treatment comes from families desperate to do more for their loved one and hoping for a miracle. However, far from lengthening the patients’ lives, these treatments have been labelled “invasive and potentially harmful”. Among these include those with incurable cancer, a third of whom were subjected to chemotherapy in the final six weeks of life.

Sadly, it also appears this trend is spreading to those with Do Not Resuscitate orders, a quarter of whom were in fact resuscitated.

Dr Magnolia Cardona-Morrell of the Simpson Centre for Health Services Research told The Telegraph that media-exaggerated reports of advancements in medical science are giving patients and their families “unrealistic” expectations as to what can really be done for them. “It is not unusual for family members to refuse to accept the fact that their loved one is naturally dying of old age and its associated complications and so they pressure doctors to attempt heroic interventions.”

Cardona-Morrell believes that in lieu of false hope and striving for unattainable cures, the conversation needs to shift more towards the acceptance and inevitability of death. “As a community we must also stop shying away from the topic of death,” she said. “Start a discussion now with your elderly loves ones about their end of life care preferences before they become too ill to have that conversation.”

What do you think about these findings?
