Loch Ness monster back in headlines after "most exciting" photo in decades

A recent potential Loch Ness monster sighting has generated immense excitement among monster enthusiasts, who claim these photographs are the most captivating seen in decades.

The incident unfolded when Chie Kelly, 51, inadvertently captured images of an unidentified, sizeable creature gliding across the surface of Loch Ness five years ago in August.

At the time, she hesitated to release the images, fearing public ridicule. However, her decision changed after the largest 'Nessie' search in over half a century took place last month – called The Quest Weekend.

Kelly, accompanied by her family, was enjoying a meal at an inn nestled on the shores of the Scottish loch when she began snapping photos.

According to the Lochness.com website, Chie Kelly "had lunch in the Dores Inn and then started walking around. I was just taking pictures with my Canon camera of Scott and our daughter Alisa, who was then five, when about 200 metres from the shore, moving right to left at a steady speed was this creature.

"It was spinning and rolling at times. We never saw a head or neck. After a couple of minutes, it just disappeared and we never saw it again.

"At first I wondered if it was an otter or a pair of otters or a seal, but we never saw a head and it never came up again for air.

"It was making this strange movement on the surface. We did not hear any sound. There were these strange shapes below the surface. I could not make out any colours – the water was dark. I could not accurately assess its length, but the two parts that were visible were less than two metres long together.

"I don’t know what it was, but it was definitely a creature – an animal. At the time I did not want to face public ridicule by making the photographs public. But I met Steve Feltham at the weekend and showed him the images, and he said immediately that they were ‘very interesting’.”

Feltham has dedicated more than 30 years to the search for Nessie since abandoning his job and selling his house in 1991. After looking at the images, he said, “These are the most exciting surface pictures I have seen. They are exactly the type of pictures I have been wanting to take for three decades.

"It is rare to see something so clear on the surface. They are vindication for all the people who believe there is something unexplained in Loch Ness. They are remarkable. I have studied them and still do not know what it is. I persuaded them that these pictures were so important they should make them public. They warrant further investigation. It is not driftwood – it is a moving creature and totally unexplained.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Chie Tchié Kelly-Kano (@kelly.chie)

Reports of the Loch Ness monster have spanned ancient history, with stories dating back to an Irish missionary allegedly rescuing a swimmer from a creature in the loch during the 7th century.

The completion of a road adjacent to the loch in 1933 led to a surge in monster sightings. Céline Dion's exciting news amid ongoing health battle

Céline Dion has taken fans by surprise - and given them something to be excited about after a challenging year - with her latest career announcement.

The singer, who in 2021 was forced to cancel shows due to illness, has revealed that she will be releasing her first new music in almost four years.

“Love comes to those who believe it,” Dion first wrote on Instagram, sharing a photo of her upcoming film with co-stars Sam Heughan and Priyanka Chopra, alongside the announcement that the movie would feature “new music from me [Dion]”.

The single ‘Love Again’ shares a name with the movie, and will feature on its soundtrack.

A day before the song’s release, Dion returned to her social media with another post, and fans were quick to share their excitement with their singing superstar.

“SO EXCITED, it’s Celine's first song in 4 years!!!” one gushed.

“We are waiting!!!! We miss you, but want you well of course!!!” another said.

“Can't wait! The Queen returns to her RIGHTFUL throne!” came one declaration.

“Been waiting for this magical remarkable moment since they finished the movie last year … still worth the wait,” one wrote, before adding that everyone missed her. “Speedy recovery Queen. Can’t wait to see [yo]u again soon.”

Dion’s last single ‘Courage’ released in 2019, right before the singer took a step back from the limelight, reportedly due to both the pandemic and her own declining health.

Late in 2022, Dion provided fans some insight into her situation, sharing a video on YouTube to explain what was going on in her day-to-day life, and the challenges she was facing - the same challenges that had led to the cancellation of her stage appearances.

“I sometimes have a lot of difficulty walking and I can't always use my vocal cords to sing as I would like,” she confessed.

It was revealed that Dion suffers from SPS (otherwise known as Stiff-Person Syndrome), a condition that causes both muscle spasms and severe pain.

And as the star’s sister, Claudette Dion, told Le Journal de Montreal, the family have high hopes that Dion may yet be able to return to the stage.

And while Claudette had previously been hesitant to discuss her sister’s health journey, she could now tell the publication that Dion had “done it with composure” while making her YouTube content, “I know she was holding herself back. It wasn’t done in a moment of crisis, with tears, in distress. She simply explained what it was.”

“Rather than crying about her fate,” she went on, “I’m trying to send her positive vibes and to make sure that one day, she’ll be able to get back on stage."

Images: Getty

10 exciting retirement adventure ideas

In the words of Mark Twain, “Years from now you’ll be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the one’s you did.” Now you’ve got a little bit of extra time up your hands heed these words and start your own retirement adventure, like one of the 10 ideas mentioned here.

1. Drive the Great Ocean Road

We’ve already talked about eight reasons everyone should drive the Great Ocean Road in Australia. Observe what remains of the 12 apostles, visit the many amazing sites and enjoy some of the best scenery Australia has to offer.

2. Discover the Red Centre

By land, air or water there’s never been a better time to discover the Red Centre. And because you’ve got nothing else going on you could do it all. It’s surprisingly cheap to book a helicopter tour of Uluru, a four wheel drive is classic and even a river cruise through Katherine Gorge is nice!

3. Head to a music festival

There are a number of festivals that cater to older (and more discerning) musical tastes. The Bluesfest in Byron Bay is a popular choice and recent festivals have included classic acts for all ages like Paul Simon, Bob Dylan and Crosby, Stills and Nash.

4. Head to Asia

You’ve probably been to Asia before, but now you can really explore. Bhutan is one of Asia’s best kept secrets and retirement is a great time to finally explore it. This land of rugged mountains, ancient shrines and awe-inspiring natural wildlife is a must now you’ve got more time.

5. European Peace Walk

This newly started walking trail (self-guided) sees you walk 550km across central Europe from Vienna to Trieste, via Bratislava, Hungary, Croatia and Slovenia. This annual walk marks the anniversary of World War I and is designed to celebrate and promote the creation of peace in Europe.

6. Cross the Arctic Circle

This is an ambitious trip, but now that you’ve got some more free time you can afford to be a little bit more adventurous! Depending on your age, budget, fitness and appetite, you can do anything from a four hours trip to an extensive, week-long trek where you’re camping under the stars!

7. Master a new sport

Now’s your big opportunity to try and master a new sport! Sure, maybe you’ve left it a bit late to try cliff diving, or to get into the octagon as an MMA fighter, but that doesn’t mean there’s any reason to not give any sport you’ve considered trying (but never had the time to) a red hot go.

8. Go caravanning

As recently mentioned in our recent community contributor article, how I drove a caravan around the world in retirement sometimes retirement can signal the start of your adventures rather than the end! Explore Australia or even head abroad and enjoy the bliss of life on the open road.

9. Volunteering in retirement

Giving up a little bit of your time to help others can be an adventure in its own right. As we outlined in our article, 5 reasons to volunteer in retirement, evidence shows that giving a little time to help others in retirement isn’t just good for the community, it’s good for you.

10. Pick up a new hobby

With a little bit of extra time on your hands, you’ll relish the opportunity to explore some of your interests. Whether it’s a new musical instrument, arts and crafts, or even learning how to fly a helicopter, with less restrictions on your time you’re only really limited by your imagination.

Related links:

8 tips that will help you downsize in retirement

Do I need a car in retirement?

5 common mistakes first time investors make

Robert Irwin's exciting news on Steve's birthday

On what would have been his late father's 60th birthday, Robert Irwin has proudly shared exciting news about Australia Zoo.

The 18-year-old conservationist took to Instagram to announce that the Koala Intensive Care Unit is now open in the wildlife hospital, following news that the native animals are now officially an endangered species.

"Here in Australia, we pride ourselves on being home to some of the most prolific and unique species on the planet and koalas are undoubtedly the icons of our native wildlife," Robert wrote alongside a photo of himself with an injured koala.

"But, Australia is also home to the highest mammal extinction rate of any country on earth. This upgrade in koala conservation status is yet another devastating reminder of the threats that climate change and habitat loss pose to our natural world."

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Robert Irwin (@robertirwinphotography)

Robert said that Australia still has "a lot of work to do" to preserve koalas, but that the new wing of the facility was a step in the right direction.

He also went on to thank Family Guy creator Seth Macfarlane for his generous $1 million donation to the centre.

"We are so happy to be doing our part. Through the support of @macfarlaneseth we're proud to have finished construction on a purpose built, state of the art koala ICU at our wildlife hospital," he said.

Seth made his donation following the devastating 2020 bushfires, that were responsible for the death of millions of native Australian animals.

"Our goal is for each koala to be rehabilitated and released back to the wild. Together we can all ensure that these truly special animals are on the planet forever."

It’s Never Too Late To Be Bold and Chase Excitement

A seemingly nonsensical suggestion led Gail MacCallum to uproot her life and follow her dream.

Some people get more averse to risk as the years go by. Not so Gail MacCallum, who at age 40 quit a secure job and left the city she had enjoyed her whole adult life in order to leap into the unknown. But she had to learn to be bold.

MacCallum moved quite a bit in childhood and spent her formative years outside Canberra in a farmhouse without electricity. She read the books of animal observer Gerald Durrell and relished the freedom of the natural world. In her teens she and her family moved into the heart of inner-city Sydney, and she found she adored that too. “I was 14 and it was the perfect time. I loved the excitement of the city.”

She continued to love it over the following decades as she moved through jobs including coffee-roaster and bookseller before finding her calling in book publishing and then magazines. In 2002 MacCallum and her then partner had a daughter, Amelia. They wanted to make sure that despite being a city kid Amelia had plenty of natural encounters so they sought out places to climb trees, watch lizards and spot turtles. But one day MacCallum realised her little girl was more at ease with busy streets than bushland. “When she was about seven, we were visiting a friend whose place had a beautiful lawn. Amelia called out to me from the verandah and said, ‘I can’t go into the wild!’ We decided we had to let her experience a wider world and two months later we were in a campervan heading off around Australia.”

MacCallum admits she felt daunted. “I thought we’d need to know things like how to whittle your own clutch plate. I didn’t know how much it would all cost or what we’d do about money. But I thought the worst thing that would happen is we’d have an adventure and a holiday. I figured if we only make it two weeks in, so be it.” As it happened, the van they’d bought broke down just 90 minutes into the trip. But after repairs they set off again and travelled the country for six months, during which Amelia became an avid adventurer adept at digging fire pits. They returned to the city purely because the money had run out. “That trip helped me understand that success doesn’t have to be assured,” MacCallum says. “I realised that you can start something and just work it out as you go along.”

Four years later she and her current partner Ian Connellan were on a brief holiday in Tasmania, enjoying the chance to get up close to wildlife including “the fluffiest wombats in the world”, when they ran into some friends-of-friends, soon to move interstate, who asked them to dinner. The next day, recalls MacCallum, “They said, ‘We think you should buy our house.’” With no intention of uprooting their lives she and Connellan thought this was “entirely ridiculous”, yet they got so excited talking about the possibilities such a move might present they missed their plane home. “We stayed at a hotel that night, woke up the next morning and said, ‘Let’s give it a go.’”

They resigned their publishing jobs and in January 2013 moved to Hobart to start not just a new life but a new business. Individually and together, both are intrepid, independent travellers who had spent time with scientists and conservationists working in various remote spots around the world, including Papua New Guinea and the Galapagos Islands. They wondered if they could make a living supporting such work by helping others to experience those unique places for themselves. The two decided to set up a company that specialised in organising trips to places where important scientific and environmental research was taking place.

Naming the new company Curious Traveller, they began taking paying customers to remote locations including Western Australia’s Kimberley region and islands off South America. “For us the travel business comes out of a love of science,” MacCallum explains. “It works brilliantly. Scientists get helpers and funding. Guests get to see what scientists do and how the world is changing because of it. They leave excited and inspired, having had an awesome experience in a place they otherwise might never have seen.”

Two-and-a-half years in, the pair still have to supplement their incomes with some freelance writing and editing, but the business is growing and within five years they hope to be helping fund half a dozen research projects. It’s a big task. “Some days we think it would be great to turn off and have making it all work become someone else’s problem,” MacCallum says, “but when we see the wonder on the face of a person who is experiencing somewhere like the Galapagos for the first time we know we’re living a fabulous, lucky life.”

The Expert View

The type of business MacCallum started, which aims to do good as well as provide a living, is known as social enterprise. Celia Hodson is CEO of an institution specially created to give such people the business savvy they’ll need to survive – the School for Social Entrepreneurs.

The desire to create a business with broader aims than just making money is gaining ground. “When we used to put a call-out for people who thought they had an amazing social enterprise idea we’d have maybe 20 applying.” says Hodson. “Now we get 120.” Some leap straight in, but most make the transition while establishing the business: “Typically they taper off their paid employment as their idea starts to gather speed.”

The rewards are great, but it’s important to be realistic. “We sometimes ask people who come to us, ‘Where in your cash-flow is your salary?’ They’ll say, ‘Oh I don’t need money.’ Yes, social impact is what it’s about but to make it sustainable you need to ask yourself, ‘Is it going to pay me a salary?’ And you need to think about how to measure the difference you’re hoping to make.”

This article originally appeared on Reader’s Digest

Photographs reflecting resilience, bravery, kindness – all those things that people are experiencing.”

The heartfelt project is now turning into a photography book called Hold Still: A Portrait of Our Nation in 2020.

Inside, it will feature 100 portraits from the project, along with accompanying stories, and a foreword from the Duchess herself.

“When we look back at the COVID-19 pandemic in decades to come, we will think of the challenges we all faced – the loved ones we lost, the extended isolation from our families and friends and the strain placed on our key workers,” the royal wrote.

“But we will also remember the positives: the incredible acts of kindness, the helpers and heroes who emerged from all walks of life, and how together we adapted to a new normal.

“Through Hold Still, I wanted to use the power of photography to create a lasting record of what we were all experiencing – to capture individuals' stories and document significant moments for families and communities as we lived through the pandemic,” she continues.

“I would like to thank everyone who took the time to submit an image – your stories are the most crucial part of this project. I hope that the final 100 images showcase the experiences and emotions borne during this extraordinary moment in history, pay tribute to the awe-inspiring efforts of all who have worked to protect those around them, and provide a space for us to pause and reflect upon this unparalleled period.”

The new book will be available both online and in bookstores in the UK starting May 7.

The sales will be split between the mental health charity Mind and the National Portrait Gallery.

Surprise Aussie destination makes National Geographic’s “most exciting” destinations to visit in 2020

National Geographic has surprised and delighted many by including another region in Australia on their “best trips to take in 2020” list.

Usually, it’s expected that cities like Sydney, Melbourne or even the Gold Coast appear on these lists, but National Geographic included the region of Tasmania.

Tasmania came in at number 16 on the list of 25, as the destination has quickly become a hotspot for domestic and international travellers.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Discover Tasmania (@tasmania) on Nov 24, 2019 at 12:53am PST

The 2019 figures indicate that the region has experienced the biggest growth in international visitors in the country.

The latest figures released from Tourism Research Australia showed that 307,000 international visitors explored Tasmania in the 12 months to September last year. “We’ve hatched the plan”: Kelsey Grammer excited about potential Frasier revival

With what was arguably the most successful spin-off in television history, it’s safe to say that fans are thrilled with the news that Frasier Crane might be returning to the small screen.

Frasier Crane, played by Kelsey Grammer, is entertaining the idea of returning to his iconic and neurotic character.

"My hope is that we can bring it back," he said excitedly.

"We're shopping for the right idea because I don’t think we should just pick up where we left off. Will and Grace has done a continuation, which is like the next day after they were last on the air–they picked up right where they left off. I don't think that's appropriate for Frasier," he explained to This Morning.

"He was leaving town at the end of the show previously, he was going to go and explore his life in Chicago with his new lady love. Whether that went badly or it went swimmingly, who knows, these are all themes we need to settle on and figure out what he's going to do next."

This isn’t the first time that fans of the show have been teased with news, as Grammer said that he has approved a tentative story for the show. However, a network hasn’t been secured.

“We’ve got it hatched. We’ve hatched the plan, what we think is the right way to go,” he said, during an appearance on In Depth With Graham Bensinger.

“We’re sort of on standby a little bit. Working out a couple of possible network deals that we’re circling. Frasier is sort of in a second position to that at this point. So there’s still stuff going on. But a revisit to Frasier, Frasier’s world is I think definitely going to come.”

While official details are slim at this point, Grammer has admitted that he wants a full cast reunion if possible.

"We would need to deal with [Mahoney's passing] within the storytelling, but I'd want everybody back, if they want to come back," he said.

This would mean his brother Niles, played by David Hyde Pierce, would be returning to the show.

Grammer has also confirmed that Frasier has moved on from his role on the radio.

"He’s passed the radio show. He might be an art dealer he might be a professor. We don’t know yet," Grammer told James Corden during an appearance on the Late, Late Show.

Magazines that you know, and love are included in the service, including Wired and National Geographic.

The titanium credit card is only available in the US, but people are intrigued. It’s called Apple Card.

Apple CEO Tim Cook explained the reason behind a credit card to CNBC:

"We saw an opportunity to transform another fundamental form of payment, and that's the credit card."

However, many are left wondering whether or not Apple have lost the creative edge that put them on top.

As the products were announced, some were unimpressed. Swinburne University digital media expert Belinda Barnet explained that Apple should have set their sights a little higher instead of trying to take on Netflix.

“People were expecting flying cars and a new iPhone but [the online content-focused launch] could be very significant in that Apple may be intending to take on a company like Amazon,” Dr Barnet said to The New Daily.

I don’t think Netflix is the end game here. Just look at the market cap of the companies to see who the real competitor is.”

With another announcement from Apple announcing the Apple Arcade – which aims to curate many of the games available on the App Store into a subscription service – it’s clear that Apple aren’t messing around anymore.

“A company like Apple does know everything about you but has never shared it,” Dr Barnet explained.

“So their tactic might be to leverage their dominance in terms of data – they certainly know more about you than Amazon does – with privacy absolutely central to their brand as opposed to all these other players.”

What do you think about the Apple launch? How to put the honeymoon-level excitement back in your marriage

Here's how to put the excitement back into a relationship that is decades long.

1. Encourage your partner to pursue a passion

Research suggests we're most attracted to our partner when they are in their own element—in other words, when they're feeling confident and in the flow. That may be when he's playing his trumpet or coding a new program, or when she's dancing to flamenco music or painting pictures of historical landscapes.

Whatever your individual passions may be, focus on supporting each other to pursue them. "Find where your partner excels and start looking at them fresh through that lens, as if you were strangers, meeting for the first time," suggests sexual health consultant Celeste Holbrook, PhD.

2. Show appreciation for your partner at least once a day

When you first started dating, remember how much you appreciated the little things your partner did for you and you did for him? Continue to do this in your relationship as it grows over the years. "At the beginning you're giddy with love and gratitude, and you're grateful for your lover and all the little things you do together, the things they say and the places you go together," says Claudia Six, PhD, sexologist, relationship coach, and author of Erotic Integrity: How to Be True to Yourself Sexually.

"Reconnect with that gratitude instead of taking your relationship for granted." Start the day by telling each other what you're grateful for, complimenting one another regularly, saying "I love you," and comment on a new dress or a new haircut. If you want to take the romance up a few notches, start leaving love notes in unexpected places—by the coffee machine, in his underwear drawer, by the door so he sees it as he's leaving, or on the garbage can for whoever takes out the trash.

3. Plan fun, spontaneous date nights

When love is new, date nights are special. But with limited time, kids, the stress of running a household and doing your job, date nights can represent a huge logistical 'should.' "But it really is important to remember how dates used to be, when you'd dress up for them, look your beloved in the eye, be interested in what they say, and allow them to put a twinkle back in your eye," says Dr. Six.

"Remember what made you fall in love with him and treat the date as a special time." Go to a concert in the park and bring a picnic basket with wine if that's allowed. Outdoor concerts are often free and can be a great way to have a nice evening together and just enjoy each other's company. Or go out to a nice place for dinner and split an appetiser—order a bottle of wine and make the meal last. "Do this as often as your budget allows, but at least once a month if you can save up for it," recommends Dr. Michael.

4. Use the power of touch to your advantage

Touching is small way to reconnect and make contact every day. Even just holding hands releases the love hormone oxytocin, which can strengthen empathy and communication between a couple.

"Make sure to hold hands, not only when walking down the street, but at home, in the morning when you first wake up, and at the end of the day before going to sleep," says Dr. Six. "You don't have to talk. You can just feel the warmth of your lover's hand in yours and rest in the comfort of it, enjoying the familiarity of your beloved's skin and energy."

5. Check in on a regular basis

Think of it as a state-of-the-union conversation between the two of you about your relationship. It can be as simple as 15 minutes on the couch where you talk about what made you happy, what moved you. "The mundane tasks of daily living can dull the sparkle in a relationship, but if you make an effort to be genuinely interested in your spouse's state of mind and how they're feeling about things in their life and in the relationship, it'll have you both feeling closer to each other," says Dr. Six.

In bed at night or over dinner, ask each other what your favourite part of the day was and why. You might be surprised to learn what is most meaningful to your mate and you may even chuckle at each other's answers as you reminisce about the day's events. This way you're constantly discovering something new about your partner and sharing in their joy, the way you did in the beginning of your relationship.

Do you have any other tips?
