Dramatic first look at recovered Titan submersible

The first glimpse of the wreckage of the ill-fated Titan sub was revealed on Wednesday, a full ten days after its tragic implosion claimed the lives of all five passengers during a deep-sea expedition to explore the Titanic. Large sections of the submersible were carefully transported to shore, lifted by a crane from the recovery ship upon its arrival in Canada.

Despite efforts to conceal it, photographs unveiled the twisted remnants of electronic equipment, along with the distinctive circular window of the nose cone, according to reports from Canada Press.

The retrieval operation was carried out by Pelagic Research Services, a US-based organisation. The crew aboard the Horizon Arctic vessel had tirelessly laboured for ten consecutive days, facing both physical and mental challenges.

Utilising specialised remote-controlled vehicles, they located the shattered sub approximately 12,500 feet beneath the surface, several hundred feet away from the Titanic wreckage that the Titan sub had set out to explore.

The debris retrieved will undergo examination as part of ongoing investigations conducted by authorities in the United States and Canada to shed light on the tragedy. The US Coast Guard has also recovered "presumed human remains" from the seafloor in the area of the Titan submersible's debris field.

The remains were recovered "within the wreckage" of the submersible and will be analysed by medical professionals, the Coast Guard said in a news release.

Officials believe the Titan sub experienced a "catastrophic implosion" early into its dive on Father's Day. The sub was piloted by Stockton Rush, the CEO of Titan sub, who has since faced growing controversy for allegedly disregarding significant safety concerns while allowing affluent tourists to pay a hefty sum of $250,000 per person for the ill-fated voyage.

Images: Twitter

Gender pension gap: why women save less - and why that’s changing dramatically

One issue that has attracted growing attention in recent years is the “gender pension gap” – the fact that on average, women have lower private pension wealth and lower income in retirement than men. But before rushing to conclusions about how to “fix” this, it is crucial to understand what lies behind any pension differences between men and women.

There are three main potential drivers behind this phenomenon:

Different labour market experiences: the “gender pay gap”, and the fact that men have longer paid working lives than women;

Different investment strategies: when it comes to defined contribution pensions, men choose to invest in portfolios with a higher expected rate of return.

Different saving rates: as we investigate below, men and women may also differ in how likely they are to be offered a pension in their job, or tend to work for employers that contribute more or less to a pension, or tend to make different contributions themselves.

Importantly, the role of these potential drivers will have changed over time for various reasons. Mothers have increasingly participated in the labour market over the years, for example. Final salary pensions have been reformed to career average schemes, which in particular reduced the generosity for long stayers and those with stronger pay growth, affecting men more than women. Also, automatic enrolment has been introduced for workplace pensions, which affected everyone’s participation in them.

Gaps in pension income today may therefore reflect labour markets and pension arrangements from many years ago, and the gap in pension income for current working-age individuals may be quite different when they reach retirement. In an ongoing programme of work at the Institute for Fiscal Studies, funded by the Nuffield Foundation, we are examining in detail differences in pension saving rates between men and women that will contribute to a future “gender pension gap” for today’s working age individuals.

Making sense of the gap

In a first publication, we have documented differences in average pension saving between male and female employees before the introduction of automatic enrolment in 2012. We found that on average across all employees (whether saving in a pension or not), women of all ages actually contributed more as a proportion of their earnings each year than men.

However, this was driven by the fact that women were more likely to work in the public sector, where contribution rates are typically higher. Examining average pension saving among men and women within each sector reveals a different pattern. The average saving rates of male and female employees were similar until around age 35 but then diverged, with average contributions continuing to increase with age for men but not changing for women.

The graphs below unpick what was driving this pattern among private-sector employees in Great Britain (though the pattern was broadly similar for public-sector employees). It was caused by the extent to which men and women participated in a pension.

The proportion of men and women saving anything in a private pension was similar until around age 30 but then diverged, with men increasingly likely to be saving in a pension as they get older, while women’s pension participation plateaued. On the other hand, average contribution rates for those saving in a pension were actually slightly higher as a share of earnings among women than men.

Pension participation in overall savings

Average contribution rates in pension savings

What might have been driving differences in pension participation? The timing of the divergence in people’s lives mirrored the evolution of the gender gaps in pay, commuting and firm productivity, and suggested that the arrival of children and related employment decisions was an important factor.

So in our ongoing programme of research we are examining whether the gap in pension participation is associated with the arrival of children, and the extent to which female employees received a different pension offer from their employer, or made different saving decisions when presented with the same offer as male employees.

Effect of automatic enrolment

The introduction of automatic enrolment into workplace pensions has substantially changed pension-saving behaviour – in particular, substantially increasing pension participation among employees targeted by the policy. The graph below shows the proportion of male and female employees of different ages who were saving in a private workplace pension in 2012 and 2019 in Great Britain.

The pattern in 2012 is represented by the two sets of dashed lines, with men again in blue and women in purple. It is similar to that estimated in the first graph in this article.

But the pattern in 2019 is totally different. Rather than participation diverging at a particular age, women are now slightly less likely to be in a pension at all ages than men (but the level of participation among both is considerably higher). Automatic enrolment will therefore have fundamentally changed the nature of the gender gap in pension-saving rates going forwards.

Pension participation 2019 vs 2012

This highlights the importance of examining gender differences in saving rates, rather than just accrued pension wealth or pension income. Focusing on the latter risks developing policies to fix a perceived problem that has already changed.

This article originally appeared on The Conversation.

"Dramatic result": New drug shows hope for slowing down Alzheimer's disease

A trial drug has shown "significant" results in slowing down Alzheimer's disease, with Australian healthcare experts hopeful in where this breakthrough can take their research.

The drug, known as Lecanemab, has been proven to reduce cognitive decline by 27 per cent compared to placebo, according to an overseas study.

More than 1,700 patients with mild cognitive impairment were enrolled in the study and the results were collected over 18 months.

"Functionally and cognitively, it seems they did better and so that is a dramatic result," Dr Lawrence Honig, one of the study investigators from Columbia University Medical Centre, said.

The drug works by removing the build-up of amyloid plaques in the brain which is one of the hallmarks of the disease, which featured in the scans of each study participant.

Australian experts are excited about the findings, and how this can further their research.

"This is the first time we've seen a drug like this have these kinds of effects," Professor Sharon Naismith, Clinical Neuropsychologist & NHMRC Dementia Leadership Fellow at the University of Sydney, said.

"The results of this trial have massive implications for our resourcing."

Naismith warns there's a need to spend more money on better diagnosing patients with mild cognitive impairment.

"In the past there has been a lot of reluctance from healthcare physicians to diagnose or ask about cognitive impairment, even in primary care," she said.

She said being able to access a drug that can slow cognitive decline will change the paradigm and conversation around Alzheimer's disease.

"I do think we're going to get a real avalanche of people coming to GPs and coming to memory clinics for that reason," she said.

Professor Kathryn Goozee, Director of KaRa Minds at Macquarie Park said the study showed using an antibody to target amyloid in the brain can help with cognition.

"To date there has been no disease-modifying medication so we want to be offering studies that can potentially change that trajectory," Goozee said.

The full details of the results will be presented at an international conference of experts in the US in late November.

Dramatic underwater rescue of unconscious swimmer captured in photographs

The dramatic rescue of Team USA swimmer Anita Alvarez has been captured by underwater photographer Oli Scarff in a series of photos that make for a moment-by-moment replay.

Alvarez was performing in the artistic swimming solo free final at the 2022 World Aquatics Championship in Budapest when, at the end of her swim, she became unconscious and sank to the bottom of the pool.

Head coach Andrea Fuentes quickly sprang into action, diving into the pool fully clothed and swimming down to grab Alvarez.

“It was a good scare,” Fuentes told Spanish sports newspaper Macra.

“I had to dive in because the lifeguards didn’t do it. I was scared because I could see she wasn’t breathing.”

Fuentes then brought Alvarez to the pool’s surface, where another swimmer helped take the unconscious athlete to the edge of the pool.

Alvarez was lifted out of the water and onto a stretcher so she could receive medical attention.

In a statement, Fuentes confirmed that Alvarez had a medical emergency but that “all is okay”.

“The doctors checked all vitals and everything is normal: heart rate, oxygen, sugar levels, blood pressure, etc … all is okay,” she said.

“We sometimes forget that this happens in other high-endurance sports.

“We have seen images where some athletes don’t make it to the finish line and others help them to get there.

“Our sport is no different than others, just in a pool, we push through limits and sometimes we find them.

“Anita feels good now and the doctors also say she is okay. Tomorrow she will rest all day and will decide with the doctor if she can swim free team finals or not. Thank you for all your well wishes for Anita.”

This isn’t the first time Alvarez has experienced a medical emergency in the pool, nor is it the first time Fuentes has saved her.

Alvarez briefly lost consciousness at the end of a routine while at an Olympic qualification event in Barcelona last June, where Fuentes dove in to rescue her.

The 25-year-old came seventh in Wednesday’s competition with a score of 87.6333, with Japan’s Yukiko Inui claiming victory having scored 95.3667.

Images: Oli Scarff (Getty Images)

Dramatic pics of huge brawl outside wedding reception

Footage has emerged of the moment a wedding reception in Sydney's north shore descended into chaos, as guests became involved in a brazen fight.

The video, which was uploaded to Reddit, shows dressed-up guests throwing punches in the affluent suburb of Mosman on Saturday night.

A spokeswoman for NSW Police spoke to news.com.au and said officers were called after reports were made of 30 guests becoming involved in a fight.

“This is after a wedding. Not sure the context but the groomsmen and guests were fighting among themselves,” the person behind the camera said.

In the now viral video, guests have taken off their suit jackets as four women and four men fought on the busy road, halting traffic.

One male guest is seen throwing a woman to the ground before running after another guest.

A separate fight, directly adjacent on the open highway side of the intersection, involved at least another dozen revellers.

One man is seen on the ground in front of a stopped white car, prompting three others to rush over to check on him.

Another man is captured on video with no shirt, and is seen grabbing someone from behind and hitting their head on the asphalt.

Meanwhile, another man – who appears to not be a guest at the function or involved in the fight – attempts to direct traffic around the brawl.

The police spokeswoman said that when police arrived, most of the guests had left the scene and “those remaining were reluctant to make a complaint”.

“Following further inquiries, police last night [Sunday, February 20] spoke with a 26-year-old man who told police he’d suffered a broken nose as well as injuries to his face and ribs after being knocked unconscious during the affray,” she said.

“Inquiries are continuing to identify those involved.”

Users on Reddit were shocked by the footage, with one person commenting he that they work “at the Yacht Club next door” and “probably served those people drinks before the wedding”.

Crime Stoppers have urged anyone who has any information about the incident to come forward.

Why accidents and emergencies seem to dramatically slow down time

A few years ago I had a car crash. I was driving in the middle lane of a motorway, when a truck pulled out from the inside lane and hit the side of our car, spinning us around, and then hitting us again.

As soon as the truck hit us, everything seemed to go into slow motion. There was a very long gap between the sound of impact and the beginning of the car’s spin. I looked behind and the other cars on the motorway seemed to be moving extremely slowly, almost as if they were stationery.

I felt as though I had a lot of time to observe the whole scene, and to try to regain control of the car. I was surprised by how clear and vivid everything became, and how much detail I was taking in. There was a strange sense of quietness too.

We span around for a few seconds, before careering into a crash barrier on the hard shoulder. Then everything seemed to switch back into normal time again. (Luckily, my wife and I were uninjured.)

My altered perception of time during the seconds of the crash is a common experience. Since writing a book and several articles on the subject, people regularly send me accounts of accidents and other moments of sudden shock which bring about an extreme slowing down of time.

One woman told me how she rushed to save her children from the dangers of a nearby fire:

Time seemed to stop, enabling me to do this. I moved first one child out and handed her over to a girl that came to help, and then I went back and woke up my eldest, scooped up the baby and then my eldest … I will never forget the moments of absolute clarity and calmness. It didn’t feel like I was even in my own body. Whatever happened, I remain extremely grateful.

Another woman described a horrific experience when two men tried to rape her, telling me: “I was able to defend myself and escape because everything was so slow that I had time to react faster than the men attacking me.”

I’ve been sent similar reports about people’s experience of robberies and assaults, dangerous confrontations with wild animals, and natural disasters. So why does time seem to slow down in these moments of emergency?

One possible explanation may lie with a neurological or psychological ability that our ancestors developed as an aid to survival. The ability to slow down our time perception increases our chances of surviving emergency situations, because it gives us more time to respond to the situation, to prepare and position ourselves. In this sense, we could perhaps interpret the ability as an evolutionary adaptation.

Another possibility is that the “time-slowing” effect is due to the increased number of impressions and perceptions of our surroundings that our minds absorbs during these moments. It does seem to be the case that increased information-processing slows down our experience of time.

This explanation leads to the idea that the time-slowing effect is a “recollective” phenomenon, due to the increased number of memories that are created in those few seconds. The neuroscientist David Eagleman has suggested this, claiming that “time-slowing is a function of recollection, not perception: a richer encoding of memory may cause a salient event to appear, retrospectively, as though it lasted longer”.

However, this seems to belie the subjective strength of the experiences. To anyone who has had one (myself included), there seems no doubt that the time expanding effect is happening in the present, rather than a belated effect of recollection.

In any case, the fact that these experiences bring an increased number of impressions could be an effect rather than a cause. That is, a slowed down sense of time may be the very reason we become able to absorb many more impressions.

A different mode of consciousness

While these explanations may well be contributing factors, I think the main reason for the time-slowing effect of accidents and emergencies is that they bring about an abrupt shift into a different mode of consciousness.

Our normal sense of time passing is a function of our normal state of consciousness. But there are many varieties of altered states of consciousness in which time slows down drastically.

Think of athletes when they are “in the zone” for example, or states of deep meditation, or being under the influence of psychedelic drugs. (There are also some altered states in which time appears to pass very quickly, such as hypnosis.)

Our sense of time passing isn’t absolute or fixed. Time has no “normal” speed. Instead, our experience of time is generated by our psychological structures and processes.

What we experience as normal time is simply a normal state of consciousness. Once our normal psychological structures and processes change, our sense of time alters too. But this altered sense of time is just as valid as our normal sense of time.

A more extreme interpretation would be that – as is suggested by some of the findings of quantum physics – time is a kind of illusion. It is created by our minds, and does not exist outside them.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. I put it on first thing in the morning. My kids visited the set and were shocked at the way I looked. You know, I’ve been working as an actor since I was 14 years old. It’s a choice, but it’s also a calling. Sometimes, I kind of try to move away, but it always pulls me back.”

But despite her highly acclaimed performance, the 51-year-old revealed that she wasn’t the first choice to play the part.

“In Destroyer, I play a cop who’s been through a lot – she’s very American, very angry, distressed and disturbed. I wasn’t the first choice for that role – it went to somebody else and she didn’t want to do it. I read the script and put my hand up and said, ‘What about me?’”

Kidman has received high praise for her performance in the crime drama and is predicted the role could nab her the title of Best Actress, Drama at the Golden Globes this weekend.

Kidman has won five Golden Globes to date, with the actress taking home the honour last year for her HBO show Big Little Lies.

How childhood has dramatically changed over the years

Barbara Binland is the pen name of a senior, Julie Grenness, in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. She is a poet, writer, and part-time English and Maths tutor, with over 40 years of experience. Her many books are available on Amazon and Kindle.

Another little baby boomer was born. Maybe our mothers smoked or drank during their pregnancies. Moreover, our mothers took aspirin or Bex, ate fish from tins, and had no ultrasounds or pre-natal testing.

Having been born, we were swaddled to the max, and cradled in bassinets and cots, painted with lead-based paints. We grew up in homes with no locks on cupboards or doors. We were given toy guns and loved playing cowboys. For transport, we rode on pushbikes or tricycles with no helmets, and bounced around in cars with no seat belts or child booster seats.

In daily life we were told to ‘go and play’, so we mucked around in large backyards, drank from the garden hose, shared drinks, and ate mud pies in the vegetable patch. We grew brown to the great summer sun. It was all good for our immune system, according to our old Grandpa. Hence, potential skin cancer these days.

We all took our lunch to school, sandwiches of white bread with real butter. We ate home baked cakes cooked with real white sugar and full cream milk. We ate musk lollies and lolly cigarettes. We were always playing, no one was checking constantly on a mobile phone where we were all day. We had no watches, or smart phones. When the street lighting came on, we went indoors for dinner of meat and three vegetables, home grown. We ate fruit from our fathers’ fruit trees.

What is more, we studied at schools in large grades. No laptops, no computer, no internet, or even calculators for doing Maths. We had to use our brains. We had no GPS to find our way around the suburbs to seek our friends, who all lived nearby.

We climbed trees, scraped knees, got cuts and broken bones, and got into ‘trouble’ at school, or when ‘father’ came home. No one got litigated. Lots of times we spent happy hours making up games with tennis balls or skipping ropes, and boys made go-carts, and had slingshots. We made our own fun.

So, what changed all that? Why, we became the generation that stopped Vietnam, had flowers in our hair, and along the way, invented technology. This is our legacy, we were the inventors. Thanks to the demise of the brick veneer or weatherboard dwelling, the great suburban dream, many millennial children are growing up in multi-cluster homes, with no back yard.

They play in the concrete driveway, or online. They are constantly supervised by their mobile phones. For friends, they travel to sporting complexes, under heavy escort, to play in approved sporting teams. Their education is that of the 21st century, a visual graphic and communicative approach. We had to learn with rote page turning in a limited range of text books. Norms change. But we all survived. Somehow.

Any of this ring a bell? What are your nostalgic memories of your childhood, now we are all ‘grown up’? Share your stories in the comments below!
