Kiss’s debut album at 50: how the rock legends went from ‘clowns’ to becoming immortalised

Charlotte Markowitsch, RMIT University

It has been 50 years since Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Kiss launched their thunderock-doused debut album into the pop culture stratosphere. The eponymous album, released on February 18 1974, became a platform-stacked foot in the music industry’s door.

What followed established Kiss as one of the most memorable hard-rock bands of the 1970s and ’80s, with a globally recognised legacy.

The early days

In 1972, Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons shelved their first ever rock outfit following a short stint in a band called Wicked Lester. The pair then hatched a plan to form a far more aggressive and successful rock band. Drummer Peter Criss and guitarist Ace Frehley were recruited, and the new-generation Fab Four renamed themselves Kiss.

By late November of 1973, the band had developed their bombastic live performance style, perfected their makeup and signed a deal with Casablanca Records. Yet they dealt with some rocky beginnings.

Armed with reworked songs from Wicked Lester, Kiss entered New York’s Bell Sound Studios to record their debut. A mere three weeks later the album was complete – but the band quickly realised the studio recordings didn’t capture the essence of their high-energy live shows.

As vocalist Paul Stanley told Loudwire: "What was put down on tape was such a timid fraction of what we were in concert. I didn’t understand it because bands who were our contemporaries had much better-sounding albums."

They took another blow while shooting the album cover with Joel Brodsky when, after a mishap with Criss’s makeup, the band were allegedly handed balloons by the photographer since he thought they were clowns.

Then, soon before the album was released, Warner Brothers pulled its financial backing and distribution deal from Casablanca Records after witnessing Kiss play a New Year’s eve show. Although it’s said the band’s makeup was the last straw for the label, the show in question also featured Simmons setting his hair alight shortly after throwing a fireball at a fan’s face.

Despite the blunders, the release of the first album set Kiss on a path to becoming immortalised. As Stanley says in his book Face The Music: "For all the minuses I felt about the sound or the cover, we now had a finished album which was the prerequisite for all the other things we wanted to do. We were in the game now."

The Kiss sound

I first heard Kiss as a teenager. I’d just thrift-scored a pair of ’80s-era roller-skates with the band’s logo scrawled on the heels in glitter glue. The salesperson, responsible for the glitter glue, enthusiastically recounted seeing Kiss play VFL Park (now Waverley Park stadium) in 1980 and made me promise I’d listen to them.

Overwhelmed by the band’s expansive discography, and the possibility that their name stood for Knights In Satan’s Service, I thought it best to begin from the start.

With their reputation of on-stage pyrotechnics and gore, I’d expected something more akin to Black Sabbath’s Paranoid than the jangly riffs of Let Me Know or Love Theme From Kiss. A 1978 review by Gordon Fletcher for the Rolling Stone also noted this rift. Despite calling the album exceptional, Fletcher described its sound as a cross between Deep Purple and the Doobie Brothers.

Stanley and Simmons have spoken freely about borrowing heavily from a number of mid-century legends, so it’s no surprise that sonically the album was nothing new. The Rolling Stones’ influence can be heard in the songs Deuce and Strutter, while Led Zeppelin and Neil Young are present in Black Diamond.

The album initially hadn’t risen higher than #87 on Billboard’s album charts. A studio cover of Bobby Rydell’s Kissin’ Time was released next as the lead single, but the track only bumped them up to #83. This commercial unviability loomed over Kiss until the release of Alive! in 1975.

Success and beyond

As the band’s first live album, Alive! bridged the gap between the audacious intensity of Kiss’s performances and the timidness of their studio recordings. Their early tracks were repurposed to let listeners remotely experience the infamous Kiss live spectacle.

As Rock and Roll All Nite claimed #12 on the Billboard charts, the platform-stacked foot burst through the door to mainstream success.

Fifty years after Kiss first stepped into Bell Sound Studios, the band played their final sold-out show at Madison Square Garden on December 2 2023. The performance served as a crowning jewel on their End of the Road world tour, a four-year effort with more than 250 live shows.

Promised to be their biggest and best shows ever, the farewell became a colossal celebration of the band’s legacy. Theatrical pyrotechnics, fake blood and Stanley’s classic opening line – “you wanted the best, you got the best” – were featured at each performance.

While both Kiss’s anthemic numbers and earlier catalogue were performed in these final shows, the music came second to the celebration of the Kiss live spectacle.

From their carefully designed makeup, to bombastic theatrics and hoards of merchandise, it was Kiss’s brand building that set them apart and embedded them in the heritage bracket of popular culture.

Despite the end of their live shows, Kiss endeavours to stay embedded in public memory. Referring to some of the band’s 2,500 licensed products, Simmons recently spoke on what’s next for Kiss: "Kiss the entity will continue; what’s happening now is a metamorphosis. The caterpillar is dying, but the butterfly will be born."

With a Netflix biopic and holographic avatars on the way, Stanley and Simmons – the band’s two remaining members – have declared Kiss immortal.

Stanley even suggests the Kiss look has become so iconic it’s now bigger than any band member. This means the torch could be passed on to new-generation Kiss members.

Kiss has (quite literally) breathed fire into live rock performance. Now, they’re breathing fire into our expectations of what rock royalty retirement looks like. Pitt stop! Snubbed rookie’s hilarious response to Brad Pitt’s F1 debut

Brad Pitt is set to make his formula one debut at the Silverstone Grand Prix for his upcoming F1 movie that is co-produced by British F1 Driver, Lewis Hamilton.

News that the Hollywood heartthrob will drive an adapted F2 car as part of his role prompted a hilarious response from snubbed rookie Colton Herta, who was denied a super-licence last year because he didn’t have enough points.

“Brad Pitt got a super license before me. Tough,” he tweeted in response to the news.

“You're not experienced enough mate! 😂,” another user jokingly replied.

Brad Pitt got a super license before me. Artificial Intelligence makes Cosmo cover debut

Though Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been around since the 1950s and has been used for everything from predicting how much toilet paper stores should stock (Covid times notwithstanding) to helping doctors make the best decisions for their patients, more creative applications are still in relative infancy - though the latest Cosmopolitan’s latest efforts have pushed efforts forward.

With Cosmopolitan’s latest cover, a team of the magazine’s editors, members of artificial-intelligence research lab Open AI, and digital artist Karen X Cheng - the first “real-world” person to use the AI system the researchers have developed - went through the lengthy process to create it.

Though the AI system - called DALL-E 2 - takes just 20 seconds to create an image using verbal requests from users, it took the team several rounds of selecting phrases that would help the system generate the image of a powerful woman that would grace the cover.
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; Camilla celebrates birthday with Vogue debut

The Duchess of Cornwall will be marking her 75th birthday by making her debut on the cover of British Vogue.

Camilla is due to appear in July's issue, which coincides with her birthday, after months of negotiations, a source told The Mail on Sunday.

"Conversations have been ongoing for months so this has been in the pipeline for a long time," the source said.

"The timing has been carefully thought through and her 75th birthday felt like the appropriate time."

The Duchess reportedly turned down the offer for a team of celebrity stylists to fly to prepare her for the photoshoot.

Instead, she opted for a small team for the shoot and interview, both held in secrecy last week. according to 9Honey.

Her photoshoot comes just months after Queen Elizabeth II graced the cover for the first time as queen, after appearing as a one-year-old on her mother’s knee in 1927.

That issue, which celebrated the monarch's Platinum Jubilee, ran with the headline: "Platinum Queen: Vogue celebrates Her Majesty's 70 years on the throne”.
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; Pierce Brosnan film to debut after eight-year delay

Pierce Brosnan’s latest role sees him portray King Louis XIV in The King’s Daughter, but its January release comes after an unusually long delay.

The film, based on Vonda N. McIntyre’s 1997 novel The Moon and The Sun, follows King Louis XIV’s journey for immortality. His quest seemingly ends when he captures a mermaid with the intention of stealing her life force to fuel his immortality. However, the plot thickens when he discovers his illegitimate daughter, Marie-Josèphe, has become close with the mythical creature.

Starring alongside Brosnan is Kaya Scodelario (The Maze Runner) as Marie-Josèphe, Fan Bingbing (X-Men: Days of Future Past) as the Mermaid, and Julie Andrews as the film’s Narrator, as well as William Hurt, Benjamin Walker and Rachel Griffiths.

Although a trailer for the film was released in December 2021, no-one had heard of the film at the time, with ScreenRant reporting that the film was actually completed in 2014.

With an initial release date set for the following year, The King’s Daughter was cancelled just weeks before its premiere due to issues with the film’s water-based visual effects with no future release date set.

After responsibility for the film’s distribution was passed around multiple times, independent film company Gravitas Ventures eventually secured the rights and will now release it on January 21, 2022.

Pierce Brosnan stars as a French king in the film, which will finally be released after eight long years of delays. Image: Thekingsdaughter.com

The film’s lengthy delay comes as the film industry continues to grapple with the impact of COVID-19, which has seen delays affect big titles such as John Wick 4 and Marvel’s Morbius among others.

Though delays are often a bad sign for films, Paul Currie, a producer for The King’s Daughter, has said he is confident in the film and claims it will be “somewhere between Twilight and Alice in Wonderland”.

Expectations may also be running high due to the popularity of the source material, with the critically acclaimed The Moon and The Sun even beating Game of Thrones for the Nebula Award for Best Novel in 1997. But, it’s debut is sure to spark plenty of scrutiny too, as is common with book adaptations.

Whatever the outcome, the long-overdue release of The King’s Daughter will prove to be a victory in itself, all while showing that pandemic-related delays are nothing to be complained about.

Image: Thekingsdaughter.com

Taronga’s five new lion cubs make their public debut

Taronga Zoo’s new lion cubs have made their public debut and are now accepting visitors to their harbourside home in Mosman.

The five cubs, three females, named Malika, Zuri, and Ayanna, and two males, named Khari and Luzuko, were born to experienced mum Maya and first-time dad Ato on August 12, which also happened to be dad’s fourth birthday.

Once the cubs turned 12 weeks old, they were ready to be introduced to their new home, under the watchful eye of mum Maya, of course. It has been over 18 years since lion cubs were born at Taronga Zoo, and this litter marks the first time there has been an entire pride in the zoo’s African Savannah.

The cubs’ names are all Swahili, chosen by zoo supporters because of the lion’s African roots. Malika means ‘like a queen’, Zuri ‘beautiful’, and Ayanna ‘beautiful flower’, while Khari means ‘like a king’ and Luzuko, chosen by Taronga’s carnivore keepers, means ‘glory’.

We're brimming with pride to announce the public debut of five beautiful lion cubs! 🐾🦁

The cubs who are now 12-weeks-old have taken their first steps into their new home under the watchful 👁️ of mum Maya!

To find out more or to book tickets check out https://t.co/sC6cg9rIna pic.twitter.com/eKqEcH0Lh7
— Taronga Zoo (@tarongazoo) November 4, 2021

Mum and the cubs will have access to their exhibit from 10 am to 2 pm each day, and dad will be in the exhibit from 2 pm onwards. The zoo explains that just like any newborns, the cubs have “bursts of activity followed by napping and cuddling”, so their limited access to the exhibit reflects this; the family needs private time for very important napping and bonding time!

This is the third litter for Maya, who was moved to Taronga from the zoo’s sister zoo in Dubbo last year, where she had lived since moving from a South African zoo in 2014.

Carnivore unit supervisor Louise Ginman said that the cubs are growing at a rapid rate, currently weighing between 11 and 13kg each, and they’re already developing their own unique personalities. “Our guests are going to be in for a real treat every time they come to visit and see the cubs - with so many milestones on the horizon, no two visits will be the same,” Ms Ginman said.

Image: Rick Stevens/Taronga Zoo, Cameron Spencer/Getty Images
