5 trips every senior traveller takes

They might be clichéd, but these are the trips you should definitely take as a senior traveller.

The coach tour

In your younger years, you probably dismissed organised coach tours as something for travellers who were incapable of ‘doing it themselves’. But as you get older, these kinds of tours actually start to get more appealing. They take the hassle out of organising your own itinerary, they are great if you’re concerned about safety, you will be travelling with people your own age and you can be confident that help is always at hand. Plus many modern coach tours are a world away from the bad old days, offering luxurious vehicles with lie-flat seats, screens and Wi-Fi.

The cruise

Cruising major demographic is the over 60s, so if you haven’t tried it already now is the time to get onboard (all puns intended). There’s a huge variety of cruises on offer today, ranging from quick jaunts around the South Pacific to sedate voyages along the European rivers and adventurous expeditions to Antarctica. Cruising has so much going for it and you’re guaranteed to make some new friends along the way.

The grey nomad

There are an estimate 350,000 recreational vehicles on the road around the country and a huge number of them are driven by retirees. It's one of the great Australian dreams – retire, buy a caravan and hit the road. It’s a fantastic way to see Australia and lets you do it all at your own pace. Just do your planning, be prepared for some hiccups and go with the flow.

The multi-generational trip

What could be better than a holiday for the whole family? Now that you’re retired or have more flexibility in your schedule, it can be the perfect time to get three (or more) generations together for the big trip. Rent a house somewhere, preferably with a pool or close to the beach, lots of outside space and multiple bathrooms. Cruising is also a great option for families as there’s enough to keep everyone occupied on the same vessel.

The splurge

You’ve worked hard all your life and you deserve it. Now is the time to splash out on that one incredible trip without worrying about the budget. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach for this – it’s up to you to decide what your heart desires. Go all out on a private jet tour around the world, charter a superyacht through the Whitsundays or book out the penthouse in New York City. The world is your oyster.

How many of these trips have you been on? Let us know in the comments below.
