Life behind bars for serial killer nurse

British nurse Lucy Letby has been handed a life sentence for the murder of seven infants and the attempted murder of six others in a neonatal ward located in Chester, England.

Justice James Goss, adhering to the strictest punishment allowed by British law, issued a whole-life order, ensuring that 33-year-old Letby would spend the remainder of her life incarcerated, as capital punishment is not applicable in the UK.

In a trial that spanned ten months, Letby was found guilty of killing five male and two female infants and causing harm to other newborns within the neonatal unit of the Countess of Chester Hospital between June 2015 and June 2016. This conviction ranks her among the most prolific child serial killers in the UK's history.

Despite her absence from the sentencing proceedings, Justice Goss emphasised the calculated nature of Letby's actions, stating, "There was premeditation, calculation and cunning." He further highlighted the malevolence and absence of remorse in her demeanour, emphasising that no mitigating factors were present.

Prosecutors detailed Letby's disturbing actions during her tenure in the neonatal unit. As the hospital witnessed an alarming increase in unexplained infant deaths and health deteriorations, Letby was consistently on duty during these incidents.

Prosecutors painted her as a constant, ominous presence when these infants experienced collapses or fatalities, using tactics that were difficult to detect. She even deceived colleagues into believing these incidents were normal.

The anguish and outrage from the victims' families were palpable during the sentencing, compounded by Letby's absence from the proceedings, which is permitted under British legal protocol.

The mother of a girl identified as Child I said in a statement read in court:

"I don’t think we will ever get over the fact that our daughter was tortured till she had no fight left in her and everything she went through over her short life was deliberately done by someone who was supposed to protect her and help her come home where she belonged."

Because of Letby's absence at the sentencing, calls for legal reform quickly emerged, urging that prisoners should be compelled to attend their sentencings. UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak expressed his government's intention to address this matter.

Medical professionals raised concerns about Letby's behaviour as early as 2015, but their apprehensions were not heeded by management. Some argue that had these concerns been acted upon promptly, lives could have been saved. An independent inquiry will delve into the hospital's response to the alarming rise in deaths and the actions of the staff and management.

In conclusion, British nurse Lucy Letby's life sentence for the murder of seven babies and the attempted murder of six others has sent shockwaves through the nation. Her calculated actions, lack of remorse, and absence from the sentencing have ignited discussions about legal reforms and the responsibility of institutions to heed early warning signs.

Images: Cheshire Constabulary

Kathleen Folbigg pardoned after 20 years behind bars

Jailed in 2003 and considered at the time to be Australia’s most prolific female serial killer, Kathleen Folbigg has now been pardoned over the death of her four children and will be released without delay.

Folbigg, 55, was convicted of killing her three children Patrick, Sarah and Laura, and was also found guilty of the manslaughter of her firstborn Caleb between 1989 to 1999.

Her babies were aged between 19 days and 19 months.

The historic convictions have not been quashed as that can only be done through the Court of Criminal Appeal.

Folbigg has always maintained her innocence, insisting that her children had each died of natural causes, and as a result she has served 20 years of a minimum 25-year prison sentence.

NSW Attorney General Michael Daley announced the pardon, saying Folbigg had endured “a terrible ordeal” and there was a possibility she could sue the government if the convictions were quashed, a legal step which goes beyond a pardon.

"What is the difference between today and what has transpired in the past? New evidence has come to light," he said, referring to new scientific evidence submitted in an inquiry into the death of the babies.

Former NSW Chief Justice Tom Bathurst KC is leading the inquiry and is now writing up a final report for the NSW governor.

Daley said he had received a phone from Chief Justice Bathurst last week that "he had come to a firm view" about what the outcome of his report would be.

Prosecutors argued Folbigg smothered her children during periods of frustration and insisted that some of her diary entries were admissions of guilt.

New scientific evidence has now cast sufficient doubt on her guilt.

Folbigg and her two daughters were found to carry a rare genetic variant, CALM2-G114R, which can cause cardiac arrhythmia and sudden death.

According to cardiology and genetic experts, the genetic verity was a “reasonably possible cause” of Sarah and Laura’s death.

The variant was not found in Caleb or Patrick.

Images: Facebook

The truth about cruise ship crew bars exposed

Everyone who has been on a cruise ship has a favourite spot onboard, and for many, that place is the bar.

Whether they’re in search of a refreshing lemonade or an extravagant cocktail concoction, there’s a lot to take in, with no few liners opting to deck their bars out in all the glitz and glamour they have to offer.

Celebrity Cruises, for example, have recently collaborated with designer Nate Berkus for their new Sunset Bar, and two separate spaces reserved for the ship’s crew.

For years avid cruise goers have wondered what goes on in these forbidden realms, and now, thanks to David Smiedt’s vast onboard experiences, curious souls can put their questions to rest - though the answers may not be quite as exciting, or things quite as dramatic, as they’d hoped.

As he explained for Escape, it isn’t - under any circumstances - possible for passengers to hop back into the crew bars for a look around, and especially not for a drink.

And contrary to popular belief, they aren’t particularly lavishly decorated, so there isn’t much to see back there anyway. Typically, David said, they are “furnished in stuff from the cruise boat deemed a bit too out of fashion for modern paying guests.

“As a result, the aesthetic is a bit of a hodge podge with mismatched couches, chairs and - oftentimes - a video jukebox.”

But rest assured, despite the lacklustre decor, the crew make sure there’s room for a well-loved dance floor.

And forget finding a four-course meal hidden away in there, as “unless you’ve made previous arrangements with the mess for a special occasion like a birthday, there ain’t a lot to eat.”

Employees can secure themselves a drink though, at a “heavily subsidised” rate no less.

“It would hardly be fair to begrudge your hard working crew a drink at the end of the day,” David pointed out. “It would be even more unfair to charge them the same as the passengers who make cruising the profitable venture it is.”

And while things can be a little on the quiet side during the day, the crew find their own ways to entertain themselves - with a large portion of them turning to FIFA in their downtime.

“The competition is intense and the skill level [is] off the charts,” David noted. “The matches are seriously some of the best entertainment on board.”

It’s a whole new world - or ocean - at nighttime, however. As David explained, anyone who’s been out on the open ocean on the cruise of a lifetime will have “noticed that the crew tends to divide into two main categories”.

“The first is those who have been on the sea for decades and are often sending money home for families,” he said. “They are often a bit older and fiercely disciplined about maintaining their budget.

“The second are the freshly scrubbed young folk in their 20s who are living a life of adventure on the ocean. Not long out of home, they work and play hard. And so they should.”

David assured that they have their fun - within reason and regulation - but that, at the end of the day, it’s still a crew-only affair.

Or as David put it, “once again, sorry, you're not allowed.”

Images: Getty

Detailed look at Chris Dawson's first day behind bars

After being found guilty of killing his wife, convicted murder Chris Dawson has spent his first night at Silverwater prison, located in NSW.

Supreme Court Justice Ian Harrison declared the 74-year-old guilty of murdering his wife Lynette and disposing of her body in 1982, after a lengthy trial.

Here is exactly how his first night in prison played out.

Upon arrival at the Silverwater facility, he was body-scanned or strip-searched and his clothing was replaced with the prison kit. Each prisoner is issued with a razor, toothbrush, toothpaste and soap.

Until Dawson receives a security classification number, he will remain at Silverwater, then he will be sent to a prison that matches that classification.

Prisoners at Silverwater consume one hot meal a day, served at 3 pm in their cell. The inmates also receive rations doled out in either the morning or evening, including milk, cereal and seven slices of bread to go with the sachets of coffee and prison-issue tea bags.

After 3pm, prisoners remain in their cell alone until the strict 7 am wake-up call.

Following the guilty verdict, Dawson’s lawyer Greg Walsh said he would likely apply for his client to be released on bail on the basis that his client wasn’t well.

“He’s been suffering from cognitive problems and also a lot of other physical problems,” he said, adding that Dawson had been diagnosed with dementia and had problems with his hips and knees.

“Whether I proceed with that application, I don’t know, but the judge hasn’t set a sentencing date yet, so it may well be that I don’t proceed with that application at this stage.”

Walsh claims Dawson was upset following the verdict and would likely appeal against his conviction, as he remains adamant of his absolute innocence.

Image: 7News

Controversial reason man barred wife's bridesmaid

A man has asked whether he’s in the right for asking his fiancée to ban her friend from their wedding because she works in the adult entertainment industry.

The groom took to Reddit revealing that his future wife is very close friends with the adult industry star, who is well known and could possibly be asked for autographs at the wedding.

However, he is questioning whether or not he is being reasonable to bar the friend from the wedding.

“Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t disapprove of her at all, that’s her business. She’s great. But my family is staunchly religious,” he wrote.

“So much so that my mom said that if the wedding was not held in a chapel she would not be attending.

“I know it’s ridiculous but it’s my family. And it’s not just her, it’s that entire side with the exception of a few cousins and my siblings.”

He insisted the problem with having her attend the wedding is because of how “recognisable she is” and even admitted to having seen some of her videos.

“I’ll fully admit that prior to meeting her, I had watched a few of her videos just because of how viral they are,” he confessed.

“I’m sure other guys there will have seen her videos too, and if something gets mentioned or pointed out it could cause so much drama that I really don’t want to deal with on the wedding day.

“I also don’t want attention to be taken off the woman I’m marrying.”

The couple broached the subject and his fiancée said she would have her friend at the wedding regardless of what anyone thinks or says despite trying to compromise.

“She told me that she is one of her closest friends and that she’s not moving her out of our wedding just to appease my mother,” the man continued.

“I told her that I want our day to go off without a hitch and this is just mitigating risk.

“I also said that I felt that she owed me one because she vetoed a groomsman of mine because he cheated on someone in the bridal party.

“She felt it was unfair and now we’re at an impasse. She told me that the way I was behaving was gross and I was being an a**hole.”

The Reddit community did not hold back questioning why the man was so worried about his religious family’s reaction when they shouldn't be watching such content.

“And how, pray, is this deeply religious family going to recognise an adult film actress? Anyone who recognises her has no right to be outraged,” someone wrote.

“Your family is deeply religious, but you were going to have a cheating groomsman? How does that work? This is about you being a prude,” another commented.

“I’m dying to know how the ‘very religious’ mother would know who this person was,” another interjected.

Image: Shutterstock

It doesn't matter whether you're a surfer, or a tennis player, a tourist or anyone else, those are the rules. Amazing find in tapas bar stuns archaeologists

With the coronavirus halting businesses around the world, the owners of the Cervercería Giralda tapas bar in Seville, Spain decided to use the time for much-needed renovations.

But, as the renovations of the 89-year-old eatery started, workers made an astonishing find.

Beneath the plaster that covered the ceiling they found a skylight in the form of an eight-pointed star belonging to a 12th century Islamic hammam.

“As soon as we saw one of the skylights, we knew what it was; it just couldn’t have been anything but a bath,” said archaeologist Álvaro Jiméz. “We just had to follow the pattern of the skylights.”

The former bathhouse was also found with elaborate red ochre paintings of geometric motifs on the walls, representing the night sky, which dates back to when the city was ruled by the Almohad caliphate, a Berber Empire that once controlled much of North Africa and the Iberian Peninsula.

“Decoratively speaking, these baths have the largest amount of preserved decoration of any of the known baths on the Iberian peninsula,” the archaeologist said.

“Absolutely everything here is decorated, and, luckily, it’s survived. The background is white lime mortar engraved with geometric lines, circles and squares. On top of that you have red ochre paintings of eight-pointed stars and eight-petalled multifoil rosettes. Those two designs alternate and entwine and adapt to the different geometric shapes of the skylight holes.”

Historians believe this bathhouse, as well as several others found around the city’s central mosque known as the Royal Alcázar palace, was used by devotees to cleanse themselves before going to the mosque to pray. They also believe the bathhouses were likely used as meeting places for people to socialise, talk business, or relax.

The tapas bar has since reopened and the bathhouse can still be seen.

Images: Cervercería Giralda / Instagram

One thing Prince Harry will be barred from doing after stepping down

Since Prince Harry stepped down from being a senior royal, he will no longer be allowed to wear his military uniform as part of the regulations for retired service personnel.

While Prince Harry will be able to wear medals that he received for his service, this does not include his uniform.

Prince Harry was commissioned in 2006 and left the Army in 2015, having undergone two operational tours of Afghanistan twice in that time. In the Army he was referred to as ‘Captain Wales’.

However, under the terms of the deal to step away from his royal duties, he gave up all military appointments.

Members Of The Royal Family Attend The 91st Field Of Remembrance At Westminster Abbey

Under the new agreement, his resignation from three honorary roles in the military will prevent him from wearing his uniform in a public setting and events such as Trooping the Colour and Remembrance Sunday at the cenotaph.

Lord West of Spithead, the former First Sea Lord, said: “The next time he [the Duke of Sussex] is at a military event he should be in civilian clothes because he is no longer involved with any military units. It is very unfortunate. It is very sad to be losing him from the military.”

Prince Harry’s highest military title was as Captain General of the Royal Marines, a role which was handed to him by the Queen in December 2017, in succession of his grandfather, the Duke of Edinburgh.

He was also made Honorary Air Force Commandant of the Royal Air Force Base Honington and honorary Commodore-in-Chief of The Royal Navy’s Small Ships and Diving Operations.

The Duke will still be able to don his medals but unlike his brother, Prince William, who did not serve in a conflict zone and has also retired from the Armed Forces, he is not able to wear his uniform as he no longer has any military honorary appointments.

Members Of The Royal Family Attend The 91st Field Of Remembrance At Westminster Abbey

The choice made by Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan to spend more time abroad in north America and to step down from their position as ‘senior’ Royals caused alarm within the Royal Marines.

It is not clear who will now take on the role of Captain General.

Lord West said: “A number of people in the Royal Marines had expressed concerns that they didn’t want a part-timer carrying out such an important role. It will be interesting to see who the next captain general will be.

“The Duke of Edinburgh took it very seriously and he was delighted to pass it on to Harry. The Royal Marines will be sad to see Harry go but they were not happy to have a Captain General who was going to be only part-time in the UK.”

Brave Australian woman who helped lock Rolf Harris behind bars goes public: "Bad day with a dirty old man"

An Australian woman has bravely unveiled her mask of anonymity to tell the harrowing story of her own molestation by disgraced entertainer, Rolf Harris.

Suzi Dent was an anonymous character witness who testified in Harris’ trial in the UK.

She aided in putting him behind bars after he was charged with 12 counts of indecent assault of girls and a young woman between 1968 and 1986.

Ms Dent told ABC’s 7.30 she was just 24 when she met Rolf as a make-up artist after being offered the opportunity to work at a Channel 7 studio.

While she said she was “very excited” to meet the TV star back in 1986, she now looks back at that “bad day with a dirty old man,” with no fondness.

“I had an all-day groping experience with a man who couldn't keep his hands off me,” she said.

“As soon as he sat in my make-up chair - I was wearing baggy pants at the time, baggy shorts - he'd run both hands up my legs all the way up my shorts right up to my thighs.

“He would grab the leather belt and pull me towards him so he could crotch-grind, which never quite happened, but he certainly tried.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by TV SHOWS THAT SHOULDNT HAPPEN (@tv_trauma) on Nov 16, 2018 at 1:56pm PST

The situation caused her to freeze up.

“I didn't jump or move or anything like that, because it's my job as a make-up artist to not upset the talent,” she explained.

“So if I had said something to him or, you know, slapped his hand away - which I might add is not what we did in 1986 - it was not acceptable behaviour for women to stand up for themselves like that, they had to cop it on the chin and grin and bear it and be polite.”

Ms Dent further explained the actor had made “disgusting” comments about her legs and body, making her feel like a “piece of meat.”

“I had a rip in my shorts, and he was trying to stick his fingers in there. I'd slap his hand away like he was a naughty boy,” she said.

“No one did anything to stop him, and I couldn't fight back because the number one rule back then – and now - was you never upset the talent.

“I had to be a good little girl, and it was the mentality that boys will be boys.”

Ms Dent as a young woman

Despite confiding in a colleague for comfort and support, the former makeup artist was shocked by their response.

“She said to me, much to my surprise, ''Oh, I thought you knew that - his nickname's The Octopus'',” Ms Dent recalled.

“He does that sort of thing all the time to make-up artists and he doesn't keep his hands to himself. He's like an octopus but because he puts his hands everywhere.”

Ms Dent says that when the day of horror was over for her, it was her job to remove all makeup from Harris’ face.

“There was absolutely no way I was going back into the makeup room by myself. I felt unsafe. I knew I was putting myself at physical risk if I went into the room alone with him,” she said.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by sinti mosi 🎛 (@sintimosi) on Jan 15, 2018 at 6:05am PST

“If he was going to behave like that in a room full of people, who knows what he would have done in a room with me alone. I could see up the hallway, and I saw him standing there waiting for me.

“Eventually the bosses came down and assumed I'd already left, so he was escorted out the door.'

When Harris was charged for his crimes, it came as little to surprise to Ms. Dent, and immediately contacted British authorities to see how she could help to prosecute during the trial in the following year.

“I didn't need to come forward for me, because it wasn't about me. I came forward to support the women who were little girls,” Ms Dent said.

“'I came forward for the women who were little girls when they were molested by Rolf Harris.

“All I had to do was tell the truth about a man who couldn't keep his hands off me, and what it was like and how he behaved.”

“They were little girls and there were other things that he did that he shouldn't have done, physical things, invasive things, that is just line crossing.”

Thanks to Ms Dent and other women’s accounts with similar experiences, Harris was found guilty on 12 counts of indecent assault, and was sentenced to five years and nine months in jail in 2014.

“There are women from, I think, four or five different countries around the world who say that it did [happen] and we all had very similar stories,” she said.

“I was thrilled. I was thrilled for the process. I was happy for his victims, that maybe they would get a little bit of closure now. And be happy that they came forward to tell their story.”

Harris, now 89, was released on parole in May 2017 after three years behind bars.

He now lives life as a recluse in Berkshire looking after his wife of 61 years, who has Alzheimer’s disease.

10 celebrities who ended up behind bars

Just because you have fame and fortune, doesn’t mean the rules don’t apply. Plenty of celebrities have fallen foul of the law over the years for numerous reasons.

Here are 10 celebrities who have ended up behind bars:

1. OJ Simpson

Orenthal James "O.J." Simpson was a running back in American Football but was better known for what he did off the field. In 1994, Simpson's ex-wife Nicole Brown and her friend, Ronald Goldman were murdered in Brown's home. Simpson was charged with their murder and a year later went on trial in what was dubbed "the trial of the century". He was acquitted but a civil jury in 1997 found him liable for the wrongful death and battery of the pair and he was ordered to pay $33,5 million in damages to the Goldman family. In 2007 Simpson was caught stealing sports memorabilia at gunpoint. He was found guilty of numerous felonies, including armed robbery and kidnapping, and sentenced to 33 years' jail with a minimum of nine years without parole.

2. Phil Spector

Phil Spector was a music producer who created the "wall of sound" production method. He worked with artists such as John Lennon and Tina Turner but it was his involvement with small-time actress Lana Clarkson, which he was now known for. When she was found dead at his California mansion in February 2003, he claimed she had committed suicide. But evidence and testimony indicated Spector himself had killed Clarkson. After two trials, Spector was found guilty of second-degree murder in 2009 and jailed from 19 years to life.

3. Tim Allen

Before his success as Tim Taylor on Home Improvement and voicing Buzz Lightyear in the Toy Story trilogy, Tim Allen was a struggling comedian and part-time drug dealer. In 1978 he was arrested with more than 600 grams of cocaine in his possession. He was reported to be part of a drug trafficking operation with nearly 20 other dealers. He was sentenced to only three to seven years jail because he pleaded guilty and co-operated with the officials by giving up names of other dealers.

4. Mike Tyson and Tupac Shakur

In the early 90s both the heavyweight boxer and gangsta rapper were at the peak of their powers. They were also very good friends and moved in the same circles. But both were to be convicted of sexual assault or rape. Tyson was convicted of the 1991 rape of Miss Black Rhode Island winner Desiree Washington and served three years of a six-year jail sentence. Shakur clearly did not learn the lesson of his friend and was convicted of a 1993 sexual assault of a woman. He was released after serving about a year of his sentence before being fatally shot after attending one of Tyson's fights in 1996.

5. James Brown

Although he appeared happy and smiley when he performed, the Godfather of Soul had a dark side to him. He had many brushes with the law and went to prison several times. The first was as a 16-year-old when he was convicted of armed robbery and served three years in juvenile prison. In 1988, Brown was arrested twice, first in May on drugs and weapons charges, and then in September following an alleged high-speed car chase. He was convicted of carrying an unlicensed pistol and assaulting a police officer, along with various drug-related and driving offences. He served three years of a six-year sentence. He also beat his partners. His third wife had him arrested four times for domestic abuse, while Tomi Rae Hynie accused him of punching her to the floor in 2004, a charge to which he plead no contest.

6. Chris Brown

Brown gets into trouble for punching people. In 2009 he pleaded guilty to felony assault on his then-girlfriend Rihanna, but escaped with probation. Last week he was sentenced to one year in prison for felony assault of a man in 2013. He has already served two-thirds of a year in rehab and custody, so was expected to be released soon.

7. Mark Wahlberg

Before he became a Hollywood star, Wahlberg was a rapper known as Marky Mark. This alter ego was not a good guy. At 16, Wahlberg approached a middle-aged Vietnamese man on the street and attacked him with a wooden stick while yelling racial remarks. That same day, he also attacked another Vietnamese man, leaving the victim permanently blind in one eye. For those crimes, Wahlberg was charged with attempted murder, pleaded guilty to assault, and was sentenced to two years in a state prison. Five years later he fractured the jaw of a neighbour in an apparent unprovoked attack. Commenting in 2006 on his past crimes, Wahlberg said: "I did a lot of things that I regret, and I have certainly paid for my mistakes."

8. Robert Downey Jr

The Iron Man star has not always been so clean-cut and for a long time was known as the biggest wasted talent in Hollywood. Addicted to drugs, he was in and out of jail in the late 1990s for a string of drug-related offences. He spent six months in prison in 1997 and was sentenced to three years of rehab in 1999, of which he served 12 months. He once told a judge: "Taking drugs to me is like having a shotgun in my mouth with my finger on the trigger - and I like the taste of the gunmetal."

9. Martha Stewart

The television homemaker and businesswoman found herself on the wrong side of the law in 2001 for insider trading. She sold her stake in a company called ImClone Systems based on nonpublic information, the day before the shares dropped by 16 per cent. She then lied to investigators about what she knew and was found guilty in March 2004 of conspiracy, obstruction of an agency proceeding, and making false statements to federal investigators. She was sentenced to a five-month term in a federal correctional facility.

10. Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton

These two can get lumped in together because their prison sentences could hardly be considered "hard time" and can mainly be attributed to idiocy. Lohan was jailed in 2010 for drink-driving and has returned to either jail or rehab a few times since. In 2007, Hilton was sentenced to 45 days in a county jail for violating her probation, a probation she had been on for drink-driving. Amanda Bynes also gets an honourable mention here, although she escaped jail time this year, in relation to a 2012 drink-driving charges.

Republished with permission of Stuff.co.nz.

Cadbury chocolate bars are about to look very different

The world’s second largest chocolate manufacturer Cadbury is pulling out of the Fairtrade scheme after seven years, in favour of its own sustainability program.

By the end of the year, the blue and green Fairtrade logo – which is awarded to product that meet strict criteria – will no longer appear on Cadbury packs worldwide. On some chocolate blocks, it’s already been removed.

Fairtrade will be replaced by a sustainability program called “Cocoa Life”, which is actually owned by Cadbury’s parent company Mondelez.

Cadbury says its own program is similar to the Fairtrade initiative and that Fairtrade Foundation will continue as a partner.

But news.com.au report that Fairtrade Australia and New Zealand boss Molly Harriss Olson said she would have preferred it if Cadbury had stuck with the Fairtrade brand.

Fairtrade help around 1.65 million farmers in 75 developing countries by ensuring they receive a fair price for their products.

“Cadbury Dairy Milk will not be Fairtrade certified in the traditional sense. It will be a new partnership, a different sort of partnership,” Olson said.

She said Fairtrade would continue to monitor elements of Cadbury’s new program.

But she also warned big companies turning to their own sustainability labels that consumers would see through “fair-washing” and companies’ “grading their own homework”.

Cadbury’s decision comes at a time where other big food companies, including Nestle and Ferrero, are expanding their Fairtrade mark across more products.

Shop owner finds 22-year-old KitKat bar

A shop owner who found a 22-year-old KitKat bar has discovered it contains less sugar than today’s incarnation.

Emma Duncan found the old chocolate bar at the bottom of an old box of crockery donated to her bric-a-brac shop.

The bar’s wrapper was perfectly intact with the red packaging clearly stamped with a best before date of Oct. 1, 1995.

Emma decided to buy a new KitKat to compare the two versions. She found the old wafer was bigger weighing 6.5g heavier and the main ingredient was listed as milk chocolate – whereas today’s version lists the main ingredient as sugar.

KitKat bars were launched in England on 29 August 1935, under the title of Rowntree’s Chocolate Crisp. The popular confection is now owned by Nestle.

The recipe was changed in April for the first time in more than 30 years.

The new four finger bars, which can be distinguished by the label “now with extra milk & cocoa”, contain 21.3g of sugar – versus the old bar’s 22g of sugar.

But the new bar is also about 10 per cent smaller, meaning today’s bar contains more sugar than its 22-year-old predecessor.
