Awkward truth behind the "Kate shuffle"

While royal visits are usually the picture of poise and control, it turns out not even the royals are immune to the occasional awkward encounter.

A video clip of Kate Middleton's meeting with Queen Margrethe II of Denmark has gone viral, with one eagle-eyed royal fan pointing out the Princess of Wales' awkward body language.

The royal women met at Copenhagen's Christian IX's Palace in February 2022, with the clip of their photo opportunity appearing to show Kate shuffling her way closer to Margrethe.

From the looks of it, Kate was trying her best to get closer to Margrethe for the photocall without calling too much attention to herself.

The creator of the TikTok, a user named The Royal Watcher, dubbed her move the "princess shuffle" in a caption overlaying the clip.

However, according to royal fan and commentator Amanda Matta, Kate's shuffle may have shown a crack in her usually collected public appearance.

"I can honestly say that I haven't seen Kate do this move before. To me, it demonstrates the high level of consideration (to the point of overthinking) that she puts into her appearances. On that photocall with Queen Margarethe and Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, she seemed slightly nervous," Matta said.

"While a bolder move would have been to simply take a step to the right, Kate instead chose to try to make the shift towards the Queen as surreptitious as possible," she added.

"She was able to keep her eyes on the camera at all times as a result."

"Normally I don't like so-called 'body-language analysis,' but the signals that Kate may have been feeling a bit daunted by the Queen's presence were overwhelming on this day! And who wouldn't be?" Matta added.

Jacinda Ardern tackles awkward popularity question

Jacinda Ardern has faced an awkward moment on Australian television, after ABC’s 7.30 host Sarah Ferguson asked what it’s like to be more popular abroad than at home.

Though the New Zealand Prime Minister is quite a popular figure overseas, she faces growing voter dissatisfaction and has been criticised for the strict COVID-19 elimination policies her government introduced during the initial stages of the pandemic.

Ms Ardern has been in Australia on a trade and tourism mission, joining Anthony Albanese for the Australian Leadership Forum in Sydney on Thursday, where they discussed everything from climate change to trans-Tasman trade.

She was then interviewed on Thursday night’s episode of the ABC show, where she was quizzed about her experience being a global celebrity.

“How does it feel to be more popular abroad than at home?” Ferguson asked.

“My total focus is at home. That’s what matters to me,” Ms Ardern replied.

"All I do is magnify the Kiwi spirit." - @FergusonNews asks New Zealand Prime Minister @jacindaardern how she feels about being a global celebrity. #abc730 pic.twitter.com/JjvkGe2pBK

— abc730 (@abc730) July 7, 2022

Earlier in the interview, Ferguson remarked it was unusual for the leader of a small Pacific country to become an “international celebrity”, to which Ms Ardern said she wouldn’t think about herself in those terms.

“I think the rest of the world would,” Ferguson replied.

“I guess, gosh, that would be for them,” Ms Ardern said.

“For me, I will forever, first and foremost be the prime minister of New Zealand, and my focus is totally on our nation.

“If by virtue of just doing that job to the very best of my ability, there is some interest in what New Zealand does and how we do it - then I will always reflect back to the fact that all I do is magnify the Kiwi spirit.”

When Ferguson suggested that Ms Ardern had been able to take advantage of social media and use it to boost her “celebrity” status more instinctively than previous leaders, Ms Ardern replied that besides leading New Zealand in the best way she can, she felt she had a job to prove to the public that politicians are “very human”.

“Ultimately, we want people to be attracted to politics - we want people to want to do the job,” she said.

“If we give this air that you have to be completely ironclad and almost so resilient as to not to be human, people won’t see themselves wanting to enter the fray.”

Despite the tension of the interview, Ms Ardern’s trip to Australia has appeared to be mostly positive.
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; Robert Irwin’s awkward fan interaction

Robert Irwin has accidentally rejected an American tourist who may be in love with him after “missing” her message.

The son of the great Steve Irwin was called cute by Megan Grass after he completed a show at Australia Zoo.

She shared the footage to TikTok of her complimenting him before asking for his number to a round of laughter.

Robert said he was “flattered” and proceeded to ask where she was from to which she responded Utah, America.

“Utah is great. I’ll tell you what, the easiest way is literally on Instagram so my people can monitor and see where it comes from because my number is hit and miss,” he said to her.

Megan then to his surprise revealed that she had in fact messaged the night before to let him know she was going to Australia Zoo.

He asked for her name and said “I’ll look it up” before waving and putting his thumb up.

It however appears that Robert did not “look up” Megan as she is yet to receive any form of communication from him.

"I think it definitely paid off because I got the opportunity to meet Robert, which is really cool," she said on The Today Show.

"I definitely was not expecting it to blow up the way it did but it was a really cool experience all together and Robert was so sweet about it."

When asked about what she liked about Robert, Megan said it was the fact that “he’s a great guy all together”.

"I just think he's literally the sweetest person ever, like I was a stranger who asked for his number and he didn't have to be polite about it but he definitely was," she continued.

"Robert's also like really busy and if he sees it [her message], he sees it, and if he doesn't, it's totally okay."

Images: TikTok/Today

Tesla unveils new humanoid robot at an awkward event

Tesla CEO and billionaire Elon Musk has confused people with his latest tech product launch.

At Tesla’s AI Day event, Musk announced his new humanoid “Tesla bot”, which prompted one analyst to call the project a “head-scratcher that will further agitate investors.”

The entrepreneur said a 172cm, 56kg prototype robot could be ready as soon as next year.

Instead of waiting until a prototype was ready for the launch, Musk brought out a man in a latex bodysuit that was created to look like the robot’s design.

In a bizarre twist, when the “robot” came on stage, they broke out in a dance routine lasting one minute before Musk took to the stage.

Musk didn’t give many details on the Tesla bot, but insisted it will have a “profound” impact on the economy by driving down labour costs.

“But not right now because this robot doesn’t work,” Musk noted, nonetheless insisting that, “In the future, physical work will be a choice.”

“Talk to it and say, ‘please pick up that bolt and attach it to a car with that wrench,’ and it should be able to do that,” Musk said.

“‘Please go to the store and get me the following groceries.’ That kind of thing. I think we can do that.”

Musk says that the robot’s primary purpose will be to complete tasks that are “boring, repetitive and dangerous”, giving more free time to individuals who can afford the robot.

After onlookers raised concerns, Musk said the robot will be designed so that humans can easily run away from or overpower it if needed.

The Tesla CEO said the robot, which has been named Optimus, will run off the same chips and sensors as Tesla’s so-called Autopilot software, which has faced intense backlash from federal regulators and politicians.

Twitter users reacted to the news of the Tesla bot with an abundance of memes, saying the idea seemed to be straight out of a movie that does not end well for humankind.

Check out the unusual “prototype” unveiling below:

A man makes a shocking discovery after DNA test

A man who took a DNA test found an uncomfortable truth in his genes that makes a long-running family joke much more awkward.

The man posted his story anonymously on Reddit, sharing his desire to bust the family joke his father would make that the family was related to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who penned Sherlock Holmes.

The 27-year-old, whose parents divorced when he was only one year old, was discouraged from taking a DNA test to look into his family history by his mother.

Assuming she merely did not want him wasting money on a potentially inaccurate test, he took one anyway.

“This isn’t too far from expected for her, she’s a very financially conscious person and said that I shouldn’t waste my money on something silly like a DNA test,” he wrote in the post.

When he got the results, he said they “shook [him] to my core”.

The man discovered his biological father was not who raised him, but his ‘dad’s’ best friend.

On his mother’s side, the family tree was as he expected, writing, “I saw cousins, aunts, and uncles who all had used the same DNA service that I had.”

When he looked at his father’s side, he saw a list of names he recognised but were “just not my family as I had known it”.

Bringing up the discovery with his father, the man said he “took it in his stride” and “immediately averted his worst fear” by assuring him it would not affect their relationship.

“This man has paid child support, invested his efforts and time, and worked multiple jobs at a time to afford me the best life he could aadn biologically I’m not even his,” he said.

The discovery of his mother’s affair instead proved to be the “real twist”.

“I grew up with this other guy’s daughters (my apparent half-sisters) and wife as close family friends,” he continued.

Now facing “a quandary” of whether to reach out to his “apparent biological father”, the man explained his biological dad has been married for 26 years.

He even noted that the pair shared similar physical characteristics.

“Fun family anecdote has always been that he ‘rubbed off on me’ because we share a cleft chin,” the Redditor explained.

“Makes sense now.”

A video of a grandmother’s awkward reaction to an “ugly baby” has gone viral - but the prank has sparked a huge divide.

The grandma was filmed by grandson Stewart McGonigle who showed her a photo of the newborn.

After making a foul expression when seeing the baby, Stewart told her he was on FaceTime with the parents, causing his grandma to try and undo any offence she may have caused.

Fortunately, it was all a joke and he wasn’t really on video call, but the prank has divided those watching.

The viral video was filmed in Glasgow, Scotland.

“Oh nan look, Annie had a wean,” he says.

Glancing at the photo, the gran pulls a face and says: “Did she? Oh god.”

After her reaction, Stewart kickstarts his prank, telling her the parents of the child heard her.

Clearly embarrassed, she attempts to backtrack, saying the baby is “nice” and then asking Stewart to take the phone away.

While many thought the video was hilarious, others said it wasn’t funny to laugh at someone’s baby.

“Not funny. That’s someone’s baby your laughing about,” one person commented.

“Aww that’s so cruel,” another wrote.

“Awww, whose baby is this though? “Oh f***": Donald Trump caught in awkward blunder

6 magic phrases that can save an awkward conversation

1. Pay a compliment

Why is it so easy to forget someone’s name within seconds of meeting them? Because, you weren’t really listening—you were too busy thinking about what to say next. One easy way to skirt that natural selfishness and propel any conversation forward is to open with flattery. When you meet someone for the first time, 'Pay that person a compliment when repeating their name, thus helping to anchor and embed it even deeper into your memory,' says professional mentalist Oz Pearlman, who sometimes has to remember the names of hundreds of people he just met for his act. If you compliment Alyssa on her necklace, you instantly prime your brain to recall her name the next time you see that necklace, Pearlman says. 'As a bonus, everyone enjoys flattery, so that compliment can go a long way toward you being remembered as well.''

2. Ask lots of questions – good questions

Research shows that in conversations with unfamiliar people, we tend to rate the experience based on our own performance, not theirs. What’s more: the experience of talking about ourselves can be more pleasurable than food or money. So, how do you give your conversation partner the pleasure of a good conversation? Ask them questions—a lot of questions, and ones that call for more than vague one-word answers (a good rule is, if your question can be answered with “fine,” don’t ask it). Avoid work if you can; instead, ask about play—”What keeps you busy outside of work?” is a good place to start. According to Debra Fine, author of The Fine Art of Small Talk, one question pretty much guaranteed to put someone in a positive mindset and open doors to their personality: “What has the highlight of your year been so far?” This allows the person to show you her best self and, if her highlight includes a topic you’re interested in too, may lay the groundwork for a true friendship.

3. Try to make their day better

If your conversation partner still isn’t biting, make things even easier for them by asking games researcher Jane McGonigal’s favourite question: “On a scale of one to ten, how was your day?” Anyone can think of a number between one and ten, McGonigal says, and they’re likely to elaborate on their answer as they go. But it gets even better. After they respond, ask them this: “Is there anything I can do to move you from a six to a seven (or a three to a four, etc.)?” You’d be surprised how happy this little gesture will make someone.

4. Play the sympathy card

Ready for a cheater’s way to advance a conversation? Memorize three magic words: 'that sounds hard.' 'Nearly everyone in the world believes their job to be difficult,' entrepreneur Paul Ford wrote in his viral essay, 'How to Be Polite.' 'I once went to a party and met a very beautiful woman whose job was to help celebrities wear Harry Winston jewelry,' Ford wrote. 'I could tell that she was disappointed to be introduced to this rumpled giant in an off-brand shirt, but when I told her that her job sounded difficult to me she brightened and spoke for 30 straight minutes about sapphires and Jessica Simpson.'

5. Seek their opinion

This tip has been tested by tactful US founding father, Benjamin Franklin. In his memoir, Franklin describes an 'old maxim' that helped him along in his political career: 'He that has once done you a kindness will be more ready to do you another, than he whom you yourself have obliged.' In other words, if you ask someone for advice or a favour and they oblige you, they will be psychologically primed to like you and help you again (today this phenomenon is know as The Ben Franklin effect). So, if you truly want to endear yourself to a stranger and show them you value their mind, ask for their advice on something. If they give it to you, they get to feel important and valued—and you might just learn something in the process.

6. Exit gracefully

When your conversation reaches a natural conclusion, pull the trigger by saying 'I won’t keep you' or 'Give my regards to [mutual acquaintance]' before making your escape. Adam Dachis, coauthor of The Awkward Human Survival Guide, adds that context can provide you the perfect exit strategy. 'If you’re at a party, excuse yourself to get a drink; if you’re at work, you can leave to get some coffee. You can also say, ‘It’s nice talking to you, but I have to talk to someone before they leave.’'

Written by Brandon Spektor. The awkward moment between Prince William and Emma Thompson

Academy Award winning actress Emma Thompson was recently on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and shared some details about what happened whilst she was being awarded her damehood from Prince William.

Becoming a Dame was nothing compared to the honor I awarded Emma Thompson. pic.twitter.com/DtMTMRNEh8
— Ellen DeGeneres (@TheEllenShow) April 12, 2019

As it turns out, Prince William had pinned the dame pins in a bit of an awkward position.

Thompson re-enacted the moment with DeGeneres to explain just how awkward it was.

Congratulations to Dame Emma Thompson! Today at Buckingham Palace, the actor received her Damehood from The Duke for services to Drama. pic.twitter.com/1gSfaawBii
— Kensington Palace (@KensingtonRoyal) November 7, 2018

"He placed it right there,” Thompson explained through laughter.

"And it's a little bit of a nipple moment and you go, 'Gosh, I wasn't expecting that.'"

Thompson, 59, also joked about how she was “pretty low slung these days”, so when Prince William placed the two pins on her, it hurt “both times”.

Naturally, being hurt generates a reaction to the pain. However, Thompson revealed that she made an “inappropriate” noise in the palace.

"I made a very loud and inappropriate noise in Buckingham Palace," she admitted.

The joy of receiving a damehood couldn’t be overlooked though, as Thompson was thrilled to receive it.

It’s not the first time Thompson has had an awkward run-in with Prince William.

When she received her honorary title last November, she shared a joke with the Prince. She told the Associated Press:

“I love Prince William. I’ve known him since he was little, and we just sniggered at each other,” she explained.

“I said, ‘I can’t kiss you, can I?’ And he said, ‘No, don’t!'"

The awkward mistake Princess Diana made at her first Christmas as a royal

Princess Diana and Prince Charles were married less than six months before she was invited to the royal family’s annual Christmas festivities of December 1981.

The traditions of the royal family include the sharing and opening of presents on Christmas Eve at 6pm sharp according to The Mirror. To bring a playful twist to the festive season, all gifts bought for family members must be cheap and humorous.

Unfortunately, during Diana’s first Christmas as a royal, she wasn’t informed of the funny present rule and instead gifted the Queen’s daughter, Princess Anne, a cashmere sweater, whilst Diana received a toilet roll cosy.

Do not fret, Diana made up for this slip-up the following year by buying Duchess Fergie a leopard-print bath mat.

A few of the other humorous royal Christmas gifts over the years have included Duchess Catherine gifting then-single Prince Harry a ‘grow-your-own-girlfriend’ kit.
