“You won’t believe it”: An a-moo-sing new addition for one Victorian farm

Megan and Barry Coster, two dairy farmers from Victoria’s West Gippsland region, were given the smiling surprise of a lifetime during their latest round of calving.

“My husband was collecting calves to bring in for the day,” Megan told ABC’s rural reporter Annie Brown. “And I think I was off with the kids at sport, and I just got this text message of this calf, and he’s [Barry] like ‘you won’t believe it’.

“Originally when he got the calf up he didn’t notice, and then he turned around and looked on the other side, and couldn’t believe it.”

The calf, affectionately named ‘Happy’ by the family, had been born with an award-winning grin - just not where one would expect. On his side was a very unique marking - two eyes, a nose, and a big smile.

When asked how old Happy was, Megan explained that he had only been born three or four days prior to the discovery, and went on to add that they had a lot of calving going on, so it was a busy time for them, and likely why they hadn’t immediately noticed what made Happy so special.

“We’ve seen some number sevens, or love hearts on the head, and a few strange markings but we’ve never seen anything that resembles a smiley face before … we’ve had thousands over the years, and we’ve never had anything like it,” Megan said.

“I couldn’t believe it,” she went on, before admitting she’d checked to ensure none of their staff had added any of the lines to the young cow. “And then I was pretty quickly sharing it with some of my friends - none of them could believe it either.”

Megan went on to post to Facebook, sharing a photo of their spectacular latest addition with the caption “the funniest marking we’ve had for a while”, to the delight of fellow dairy fans around the world.

“They look fake! How awesome,” wrote one individual, who seemed to share Megan’s initial disbelief, “best marking I’ve seen.”

“I guess that's his good side,” joked another.

“Love it. That's got to be a keeper as a pet,” said one, unaware that the family had every intention of keeping Happy on a pet - though he might also have to pull his weight as a lawn mower.

“One very happy calf,” came one declaration.

One person hit the nail on the head when they said “this one will always put a smile on your face every time u c [you see] it.”

Although not everyone was quite so onboard with the lovefest, with one woman admitting that she found it to be “a little bit clown-creepy”.

Images: Facebook

Roof roof! Huckleberry welcomes new addition to his family

A golden retriever pup named Huckleberry, who was photographed frequently sitting on the roof of his family home in Austin, Texas has quite the following on Instagram after rising to fame five years ago.

Huckleberry's owners, Allie Burnitt and Justin Lindenmuth, became so used to public concern for their dog they installed a framed sign outside their home.

"Don't be alarmed," the sign read. "Huckleberry is living up to his name and learned how to jump onto our roof from the backyard."

“We appreciate your concern but please do not knock on our door… we know he’s up there. But please feel free to take pictures of him and share with the world."

The family then offered the hashtag hucktheroofdog. Next, they had an Instagram account for him with over 3,000 follwers.

Allie told a news outlet in the US that Huckleberry gains access to the family home through an almost one-metre-wide clearance between a hill and the family's backyard.

"We wondered when he would figure it out. It took him about six months to figure out the roof was an extension of his backyard. He now goes up every single time we let him outside," she told the media outlet in 2017.

Fast forward five years and Huckleberry is still enjoying time on the roof as well as close to 40,000 Instagram followers.

Huckleberry's family have welcomed a new addition, Bluebell the Golden Retriever puppy earlier this year in April.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Huckleberry (@hucktheroofdog)

A video posted to Huckleberry's social media account shows Bluebell's excited arrival with the family as well as a sneaky photo of her on the family's roof.

Images: Reddit / Instagram

The Queen welcomes newest addition to the family

Yesterday, rumours developed that Duchess Kate wanted more children. Today, however, a new royal bundle of joy has been welcomed into the royal family.

Queen Elizabeth II has adopted an orphaned Corgi pup named Whisper.

Whisper was previously owned by the late Bill Fenwick, former gamekeeper at royal property Sandringham House in Norfolk.

It is believed while Bill was sick, the Queen would take his dogs for walks around Sandringham grounds and has continued to do so since his death earlier this year.

"She couldn't resist Whisper," a source told The Sun. "Now she has asked Bill's family if she can keep him."

The Queen’s love for corgis is no secret and she also owns a number of other breeds of dogs.

As well as her two corgis Willow and now Whisper, she has two “dorgis” (dachshund-corgi mixes) named Candy and Vulcan.

Corgis were first introduced into the royal family when King George VI bought one from a local kennel in 1933. Secret additions to tourist attractions around the world

An apartment in the Eiffel Tower, a tiny police station in a lamp post, secret passageways and unmarked floors.

These may sound like ideas straight from a spy movie, however, they are just some of the real - but hidden - additions to popular tourist attractions around the world.

While some are disguised, others can be spotted – if you know where to look.

One of the most iconic structures in the world, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, contains an apartment, Express.co.uk reported.

In 1889, engineer Gustave Eiffel had a private apartment constructed near the top of the 320 metre-tall tower.

In London, Trafalgar Square has an ornamental lamp post that once doubled as the country's smallest police station.

Inside, it had room for two prisoners, a phone line to Scotland Yard and a vantage point to watch crowds in the busy capital city.

While it was constructed in 1926, it is now reported to be used by council cleaners to store their equipment.

London has other hidden structures, too.

Beneath a section of the city's A212 road is the abandoned Crystal Palace station subway.

Although the station, built in 1865, was destroyed by fire in 1936, the subway was later used as an air raid shelter.

Parts were later used for the odd party and by children to play in but it was blocked off in 1990, the Express reported.

Some parts of the station remain and attempts are being made to reopen it.

In New York, hidden, private or now-unused spaces in tourist attractions seem common.

The Statue of Liberty's torch was once accessible to the public, but it was closed after it was damaged by a German act of sabotage in 1916, according to AM New York.

Now, the highest point which can be visited is the crown.

Many believe the top floor of the Empire State Building is 102 - but there is in fact a floor 103.

A small balcony with low railings, it is often only used by celebrities, according to the Express.

At the Grand Central Terminal, unknown to most, is a tennis club.

Located in the upper floors of the building, the Vanderbilt Tennis Club has been operating since the 1960s.

The Waldorf Astoria hotel in the city has its own secret underground railway.

President Franklin Roosevelt used to travel from his home using the underground route, the Express reported.

Also in the US, Mount Rushmore is home to four huge granite statues of former presidents; George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln.

Behind Lincoln's head is a hidden room, the Hall of Records, where documents tell the nation's history - but tourists are not allowed.

At Rome, Italy's Fiumicino-Leonardo Da Vinci Airport stands an almost 20-metre statue of the painter and inventor the airport takes its name from.

Although it was built in 1960, it was not until 2006 that a worker found a hidden compartment half-way up the structure with two documents inside, according to Atlas Obscura.

Both were written in classical latin, one revealing details of those who were at its opening ceremony and the other, the history of the area.

First appeared on Stuff.co.nz.

What are additional sources of income in retirement?

As we move into retirement the temptation to withdraw all our super at the one time before drawing on our pension can be quite an enticing one. But this isn’t necessarily putting us in a good position to enjoy a happy, healthy life in our senior years.

We should be looking at our nest egg less as a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, and more as a sustainable source of income that will ensure our golden years are some of our most enjoyable.

We’ve produced a simple guide to additional source of income in retirement. Having a few of these in play will ensure you have a happy, healthy retired life.

1. Superannuation

Super is often considered your main source of income after retirement and the chief benefit is most people pay less tax on super than if they had invested outside. You can also take money out as you need it, making it a flexible source of income after work.

2. Investments outside super

A key to retirement income is diversity and having investments outside super can potentially be lucrative for retirees. That being said, it’s also risky to have skin in the game and market movements that are outside your control can put your money at risk.

3. Part-time work

With today’s seniors living much longer than previous generations, many are turning to part-time work as a way of easing into semi-retired life before full retirement. If you’re working part-time and you’ve reached age pension age it may impact the amount of age pension you can claim, but it’s a good way to supplement this income.

4. Home equity release

If you own your home and are in desperate need of some extra cash, you might want to consider a home equity release. However, this move is one that is inherently risky and it’s recommended you seek financial advice before considering such a step.

5. Selling the family home

By the same token if you own your home and are looking to downsize, selling it can free up quite a cash for retirement while securing a more-sustainable living situation. It can also free up money from investments in shares, term deposits or managed funds.

Have you considered any of these additional sources of income in retirement? Where do you draw most of you money from at the moment?

Share your story in the comments.

Related links:

Do you have an emergency fund?

Are products keeping up to date with the ageing population?

Seniors relying on investment income are suffering

And now it's Holland America's turn to add to the mix!

Setting sail for its maiden voyage on April 8, Holland America’s Koningsdam is the cruise line’s first Pinnacle Class ship and is set to offer another exciting cruising choice.

After completing a successful delivery process, the Koningsdam was successfully delivered on March 31 ahead of the ship’s naming ceremony which is scheduled for May 20. The ceremony will take place in the line’s spiritual home at Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

After the ship’s exciting debut, it’s straight to work with the liner sailing Mediterranean, Baltic, British Isles and Northern Europe itineraries before heading to the US.

Speaking at the ship’s delivery, Holland America president Orlando Ashford said, “Today is a day of celebration for the entire Holland America Line family, and a milestone in our company history. We all share in this proud moment as we welcome Koningsdam to our fleet. Koningsdam looks spectacular.
