<p>Jimmy Barnes has shared a major health update with his fans, just hours before heading into an emergency surgery. </p> <p>The iconic musician took to Instagram to share that he is set to undergo open heart surgery, after a dangerous infection was unable to be controlled. </p> <p>The 67-year-old, who has only recently recovered from pneumonia, announced the news from his hospital bed on Wednesday. </p> <p>"Unfortunately I got some bad news yesterday….despite everyone's best efforts the bacterial infection I've been battling over the last fortnight has apparently now spread to my heart," Barnes wrote.</p> <p>"It's infected an otherwise healthy valve that was replaced some years ago due to a congenital defect, so l'll be getting open heart surgery over the next few hours to clear out this infection and put in a clean valve."</p> <blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; If anxiety is in my brain, why is my heart pounding? A psychiatrist explains the neuroscience and physiology of fear

Butterflies in your stomach. Bad gut feeling. These are all phrases many people use to describe fear and anxiety. You have likely felt anxiety inside your chest or stomach, and your brain usually doesn’t hurt when you’re scared. Many cultures tie cowardice and bravery more <a href="https://afosa.org/the-meaning-of-heart-qalb-in-quran/">to the heart</a> <a href="https://byustudies.byu.edu/article/bowels-of-mercy/">or the guts</a> than to the brain.</p> <p>But science has traditionally seen the brain as the birthplace and processing site of fear and anxiety. Then why and how do you feel these emotions in other parts of your body?</p> <p>I am a <a href="https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=UDytFmIAAAAJ&amp;hl=en">psychiatrist and neuroscientist</a> who researches and treats fear and anxiety. In my book “<a href="https://rowman.com/ISBN/9781538170380/Afraid-Understanding-the-Purpose-of-Fear-and-Harnessing-the-Power-of-Anxiety">Afraid,</a>” I explain how fear works in the brain and the body and what too much anxiety does to the body. Research confirms that while emotions do originate in your brain, it’s your body that carries out the orders.</p> <h2>Fear and the brain</h2> <p>While your brain evolved to save you from a falling rock or speeding predator, the anxieties of modern life are often a lot more abstract. Fifty-thousand years ago, being rejected by your tribe could mean death, but not doing a great job on a public speech at school or at work doesn’t have the same consequences. Your brain, however, <a href="https://doi.org/10.1006/nimg.2002.1179">might not know the difference</a>.</p> <p>There are a few key areas of the brain that are heavily involved in processing fear.</p> <p>When you perceive something as dangerous, whether it’s a gun pointed at you or a group of people looking unhappily at you, these sensory inputs are first relayed to <a href="https://doi.org/10.1038%2Fnpp.2009.121">the amygdala</a>. This small, almond-shaped area of the brain located near your ears detects salience, or the emotional relevance of a situation and how to react to it. When you see something, it determines whether you should eat it, attack it, run away from it or have sex with it.</p> <p><a href="https://theconversation.com/the-science-of-fright-why-we-love-to-be-scared-85885">Threat detection</a> is a vital part of this process, and it has to be fast. Early humans did not have much time to think when a lion was lunging toward them. They had to act quickly. For this reason, the amygdala evolved to bypass brain areas involved in logical thinking and can directly engage physical responses. For example, seeing an angry face on a computer screen can immediately trigger a <a href="https://doi.org/10.1006/nimg.2002.1179">detectable response from the amygdala</a> without the viewer even being aware of this reaction.</p> <figure><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/xoU9tw6Jgyw?wmode=transparent&amp;start=0" width="440" height="260" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe><figcaption><span class="caption">In response to a looming threat, mammals often fight, flee or freeze.</span></figcaption></figure> <p><a href="https://doi.org/10.1038/npp.2009.83">The hippocampus</a> is near and tightly connected to the amygdala. It’s involved in memorizing what is safe and what is dangerous, especially in relation to the environment – it puts fear in context. For example, seeing an angry lion in the zoo and in the Sahara both trigger a fear response in the amygdala. But the hippocampus steps in and blocks this response when you’re at the zoo because you aren’t in danger.</p> <p>The <a href="https://doi.org/10.1176/appi.ajp.2016.16030353">prefrontal cortex</a>, located above your eyes, is mostly involved in the cognitive and social aspects of fear processing. For example, you might be scared of a snake until you read a sign that the snake is nonpoisonous or the owner tells you it’s their friendly pet.</p> <p>Although the prefrontal cortex is usually seen as the part of the brain that regulates emotions, it can also teach you fear based on your social environment. For example, you might feel neutral about a meeting with your boss but immediately feel nervous when a colleague tells you about rumors of layoffs. Many <a href="https://theconversation.com/trump-the-politics-of-fear-and-racism-how-our-brains-can-be-manipulated-to-tribalism-139811">prejudices like racism</a> are rooted in learning fear through tribalism.</p> <h2>Fear and the rest of the body</h2> <p>If your brain decides that a fear response is justified in a particular situation, it activates a <a href="https://doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190259440.003.0019">cascade of neuronal and hormonal pathways</a> to prepare you for immediate action. Some of the fight-or-flight response – like heightened attention and threat detection – takes place in the brain. But the body is where most of the action happens.</p> <p>Several pathways prepare different body systems for intense physical action. The <a href="https://doi.org/10.3389/fnins.2014.00043">motor cortex</a> of the brain sends rapid signals to your muscles to prepare them for quick and forceful movements. These include muscles in the chest and stomach that help protect vital organs in those areas. That might contribute to a feeling of tightness in your chest and stomach in stressful conditions.</p> <figure><iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/0IDgBlCHVsA?wmode=transparent&amp;start=0" width="440" height="260" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe><figcaption><span class="caption">Your sympathetic nervous system is involved in regulating stress.</span></figcaption></figure> <p>The <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK542195/">sympathetic nervous system</a> is the gas pedal that speeds up the systems involved in fight or flight. Sympathetic neurons are spread throughout the body and are especially dense in places like the heart, lungs and intestines. These neurons trigger the adrenal gland to release hormones like adrenaline that travel through the blood to reach those organs and increase the rate at which they undergo the fear response.</p> <p>To assure sufficient blood supply to your muscles when they’re in high demand, signals from the sympathetic nervous system increase the rate your heart beats and the force with which it contracts. You feel both increased heart rate and contraction force in your chest, which is why you may connect the feeling of intense emotions to your heart.</p> <p>In your lungs, signals from the sympathetic nervous system dilate airways and often increase your breathing rate and depth. Sometimes this results in a feeling of <a href="https://theconversation.com/pain-and-anxiety-are-linked-to-breathing-in-mouse-brains-suggesting-a-potential-target-to-prevent-opioid-overdose-deaths-174187">shortness of breath</a>.</p> <p>As digestion is the last priority during a fight-or-flight situation, sympathetic activation slows down your gut and reduces blood flow to your stomach to save oxygen and nutrients for more vital organs like the heart and the brain. These changes to your gastrointestinal system can be perceived as the discomfort linked to fear and anxiety.</p> <h2>It all goes back to the brain</h2> <p>All bodily sensations, including those visceral feelings from your chest and stomach, are relayed back to the brain through the pathways <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK555915/">via the spinal cord</a>. Your already anxious and highly alert brain then processes these signals at both conscious and unconscious levels.</p> <p><a href="https://doi.org/10.1176/appi.ajp.2016.16030353">The insula</a> is a part of the brain specifically involved in conscious awareness of your emotions, pain and bodily sensations. The <a href="https://doi.org/10.1038%2Fs41598-019-52776-4">prefrontal cortex</a> also engages in self-awareness, especially by labeling and naming these physical sensations, like feeling tightness or pain in your stomach, and attributing cognitive value to them, like “this is fine and will go away” or “this is terrible and I am dying.” These physical sensations can sometimes create a loop of increasing anxiety as they make the brain feel more scared of the situation because of the turmoil it senses in the body.</p> <p>Although the feelings of fear and anxiety start in your brain, you also feel them in your body because your brain alters your bodily functions. Emotions take place in both your body and your brain, but you become aware of their existence with your brain. As the rapper Eminem recounted in his song “Lose Yourself,” the reason his palms were sweaty, his knees weak and his arms heavy was because his brain was nervous.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Bindi Irwin and Chandler Powell share heart-warming milestone

<p>Bindi Irwin has shared a sweet tribute to her husband Chandler Powell as the couple celebrate an important anniversary. </p> <p>The wildlife warrior couple posted a heartfelt snap to Instagram, celebrating that it had been four years since they got engaged. </p> <p>Bindi said yes when Chandler popped the question in 2019, after the pair met in late 2013 when they were teenagers.</p> <p>Irwin posted a photo to Instagram, showing the couple embracing in front of sunlit bushland.</p> <p>“Exactly four years ago, I said ‘yes’. Good news for weekend warriors: people who do much of their exercise on a couple of days still get heart benefits

The <a href="https://bjsm.bmj.com/content/54/24/1451">World Health Organization</a> recommends adults do a minimum of 150–300 minutes of moderate or 75–150 minutes of vigorous activity each week. This can include active transport from place-to-place, exercise for fun and fitness, energetic housework or physical activity at work.</p> <p>These amounts can be accrued by being, as the <a href="https://bjsm.bmj.com/content/54/24/1451">WHO recommends</a>, regularly active throughout the week, or being a “weekend warrior” who does the bulk of their activity on one to two days only, which don’t need to be consecutive.</p> <p>So far, experts haven’t fully established which of the two patterns is better for overall health. For many people, busy lifestyles may make it hard to be physically active every day. It may be more feasible to squeeze most physical activity and exercise into a few days.</p> <p>Fresh <a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2807286">analysis</a> of the large <a href="https://www.ukbiobank.ac.uk/">UK Biobank</a> database attempted to compare these two patterns of weekly activity and compare how they reduced cardiovascular risk for heart attacks, heart failure, irregular heart beat and stroke.</p> <h2>What the new study found</h2> <p>Researchers analysed records from 89,573 participants who wore a wrist activity tracker for seven days and were tracked for cardiovascular events for over six years.</p> <p>Those who did less than the WHO recommended 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per week were considered inactive. About a third (33.7%) of participants were inactive. Some 42.2% were termed active “weekend warriors” (they did at least 150 minutes and more than half of it occurred within one to two days) and 24% were regularly active (at least 150 minutes with most activity spread out over three or more days).</p> <p>Researchers considered the potential factors that could explain the link between physical activity and new cases of cardiovascular events, such as smoking and alcohol intake. They found both active groups showed similarly lower risk of heart attack (a 27% reduction for weekend warriors and 35% for regularly active people, compared with inactive participants).</p> <p>For heart failure, weekend warriors had a 38% lower risk than inactive people, while regular exercisers had a 36% lower risk. Irregular heartbeat risk was 22% lower for weekend warriors and 19% lower for regularly actively people. Stroke was 21% and 17% lower for weekend warriors and regular exercisers, respectively.</p> <h2>Not so fast. Some study limitations</h2> <p>Although the information was recorded by activity trackers, researchers did not consider on which days of the week the activity was done. Some people may have been active on Saturdays and Sundays, others might have chosen Wednesday and Friday – or different days each week. In that sense, <a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2807286">the study</a> examined a “pseudo-weekend warrior” pattern.</p> <p>Despite the many advantages the UK Biobank activity trackers have over <a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/fullarticle/2596007">questionnaire-based studies</a>, these trackers are not great at capturing strength-training exercise, such as weights or pilates, and other static activities that have <a href="https://academic.oup.com/aje/article/187/5/1102/4582884">established cardiovascular</a> health benefits.</p> <h2>What other research in this area says</h2> <p>There have been several questionnaire based studies in this area in <a href="https://academic.oup.com/aje/article/160/7/636/136697">the past 20 years</a>.</p> <p>Our <a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/fullarticle/2596007">2017 study</a>, for example, combined data from 63,591 adults from England and Scotland and tracked them over 12 years. We looked at <a href="https://theconversation.com/weekend-warrior-exercise-is-it-good-for-you-70964">risk reductions</a> for death from any cause, cardiovascular disease and cancer causes. We found similar benefits among people who clocked at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity or at least 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity in one to two sessions per week, compared with three sessions or more per week.</p> <p>Our more <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-022-02100-x">recent studies</a> used activity trackers and emphasised the flexibility of activity patterns that benefit the heart and circulation. We found doing short one-minute-long bouts of incidental vigorous physical activity three to four times a day can cut the risk of death from cardiovascular causes by <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-022-02100-x">almost half</a>.</p> <p>Similarly, in another study we found just 19 minutes of vigorous physical activity a week was associated with <a href="https://academic.oup.com/eurheartj/article/43/46/4801/6771381">40% reduction</a> in the risk of cardiovascular death, with steadily increasing benefits to the maximum amount of vigorous activity recorded (110 minutes a week linked to a 75% risk reduction).</p> <h2>What it means for you and your routine</h2> <p>Taken together, the <a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jama/fullarticle/2807286">new study</a> and <a href="https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamainternalmedicine/fullarticle/2596007">previous research</a> suggest the same thing: if it is difficult to find time to be active during a busy week, it is good enough to plan moderate to vigorous physical activities in a couple of weekdays or in the weekend.</p> <p>That said, there are benefits in being regularly physically active on most days of the week. A good session of aerobic exercise, for example, improves health indicators such as <a href="https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/full/10.1161/HYP.0000000000000196">blood pressure</a>, and <a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s40279-021-01473-2">blood glucose</a> and <a href="https://lipidworld.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12944-017-0515-5">cholesterol levels</a> for a day or longer. Such effects can moderate some of the long-term health risks of these factors and assist with their day-to-day management.</p> <p>But confirmation that we can be flexible about how physical activity is accumulated across the week for heart health benefits is encouraging. “My heart is breaking”: The Wiggles perform for dying young fan

5 surprising factors damaging your heart

<p>It’s important to maintain heart health at all stages of life, but it becomes particularly crucial as we age – after all, the older you get, the older your heart becomes, too. And even though you might be taking all the right precautions (e.g. quitting smoking, eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly), you could be tarnishing your ticker without even realising it. Here are five things you didn’t know could negatively affect your heart health.</p> <p><strong>1. Damaged hearing</strong> – if you’ve spent much of your life working or living in noisy areas or regularly attending loud events (i.e. those rock concerts you frequented back in the day!), beware. A 2015 study found that people with high-frequency hearing loss in both years (most often due to prolonged exposure to high-decibel noise) were twice as prone to heart disease than those with normal hearing.</p> <p><strong>2. Air pollution</strong> – Have you been considering a sea or tree change? Now might be the time to do it. Researchers in 2011 discovered that exposure to traffic and air pollution is responsible for between 5 and 7 per cent of heart attacks around the world. Experts believe this may be due to an increase in arterial plaque build-up experienced by city-dwellers.</p> <p><strong>3. Sleep deprivation</strong> – A chronic lack of sleep increases production of adrenaline and cortisol (the stress hormone), which in turn increases your heart rate and blood pressure. In fact, one study found those who regularly had less than five hours of sleep were three times more at risk of heart attack than those who got between six and eight hours.</p> <p><strong>4. Excessive exercise</strong> – Believe it or not, but exercise could be putting you at risk of a heart attack – that is, if you’re doing too much vigorous exercise too often. Anything that causes strain can lead to dangerously high blood pressure – this means weightlifting and endurance sports (e.g. marathons) could be off the table. Stick to low-impact workouts like brisk walking, light weights and yoga.</p> <p><strong>5. Too much sitting</strong> – We’ve heard it all before – that sitting is bad for you – but you might not have realised just how bad it can be. According to a 2015 report, the average adult spends more than half of their waking hours sitting down, making them more likely to suffer or die from heart disease –even those who exercised an hour a day couldn’t combat this higher risk.</p> <p><em>Images: Getty</em></p>

“The heart of Hollywood” Treat Williams dead at 71

<p dir="ltr">Richard Treat Williams, a Hollywood heavyweight with over 129 acting credits to his name, has passed away at the age of 71.</p> <p dir="ltr">The actor was involved in a tragic accident with a car while riding his motorbike in Dorset, Vermont. Treat was the only person who sustained injuries in the crash, and while a helicopter was called in to airlift him to hospital, he sadly passed away. </p> <p dir="ltr">As Dorset’s fire chief Jacob Gibble told <em>People</em>, investigators believed that the car’s driver had been turning and didn’t notice the motorbike. </p> <p dir="ltr">And Treat’s agent of 15 years, Barry McPherson, said the same while confirming the news to the publication.</p> <p dir="ltr">“He was killed this afternoon. He was making a left or a right [and] a car cut him off," McPherson said. "I'm just devastated. He was the nicest guy. He was so talented.</p> <p dir="ltr">"He was an actor's actor. Filmmakers loved him. He's been the heart of Hollywood since the late 1970s. He was really proud of his performance this year. He's been so happy with the work that I got him. He's had a balanced career."</p> <p dir="ltr">Treat’s family later issued a statement regarding his passing to Deadline, where they shared that “it is with great sadness that we report that our beloved Treat Williams has passed away tonight in Dorset, Vermont after a fatal motorcycle accident. </p> <p dir="ltr">“As you can imagine, we are shocked and greatly bereaved at this time. Treat was full of love for his family, for his life and for his craft, and was truly at the top of his game in all of it. It is all so shocking right now, but please know that Treat was dearly and deeply loved and respected by his family and everyone who knew him. </p> <p dir="ltr">“We are beyond devastated and ask that you respect our privacy as we deal with our grief. To all his fans, please know that Treat appreciated all of you and please continue to keep him in your hearts and prayers.”</p> <p dir="ltr">Treat is survived by his wife of 35 years, Pam Van Sant, and their two children, Gill and Ellie, as well as his significant Hollywood legacy. </p> <p dir="ltr">He was a star across both the screen and stage over the course of his impressive career, with over 50 years of experience behind him. From <em>Prince of the City</em> to<em> A Streetcar Named Desire</em>, <em>Hair</em>, <em>Chicago Fire</em>, <em>Everwood</em>, and <em>Miss Congeniality 2</em>, he’d dipped his toes in a wide variety of content.</p> <p dir="ltr">Treat won over fans and co-workers alike with his presence, and they felt the weight of his passing, taking to social media to share their grief, and to pay tribute to the late star. </p> <p dir="ltr">“We are heartbroken over the passing of beloved … star of <em>Chesapeake Shores</em>, <em>The Christmas House</em> and so much more,” the Hallmark Channel wrote. “We will forever cherish him in our hearts, and extend our condolences to Treat’s family, friends, and loved ones.”</p> <p dir="ltr">“Working with Treat Williams in Mamet’s <em>Speed the Plow</em> at Williamstown in ‘91 was the start of great friendship. Damn it, damn it. Treat, you were the best. Love you,” writer and director Justine Bateman shared. </p> <p dir="ltr">“Treat Williams was a passionate, adventurous, creative man. In a short period of time, he quickly befriended me &amp; his adventurous spirit was infectious. We worked on just 1 film together but occasionally connected over the years. Kind and generous with advice and support. RIP,” actor Wendell Pierce said of Treat. </p> <p dir="ltr">And on behalf of many, actor Billy Baldwin noted down just a handful of the qualities he would remember his friend by, writing that “he truly and deeply cared about what’s going on here in America and around the world. "You're going to be a big sister": Serena Williams shares heart-warming family announcement

Stand up for your health</strong><br />Sitting is the new smoking. Sitting for hours on end, like most office workers do, increases the risk of heart attack and stroke – even if you are a regular exerciser. Try setting a diary reminder on your computer to stand up and walk around or try to stand during phone calls.</p> <p><strong>2. De-stress</strong><br />Despite modern technologies that are designed to make life easier, we’re all more stressed than ever. Long-term stress can spike levels of cortisol – a stress hormone which can affect the short-term memory regions of the brain. Meditation, spending time with friends and family, switching off from the Internet and social media, are all ways you can minimise stress and maintain long-term brain health.</p> <p><strong>3. Be a floss boss</strong><br />Not only can regular flossing prevent bad breath, it may prevent heart attack. While there is currently no definitive proof periodontal disease actually causes heart disease, there is proof that bacteria in the mouth can be released into the bloodstream and cause a hardening of the arteries. This can then lead to heart attack and stroke – reason enough to include flossing in your daily routine!</p> <p><strong>4. Good food</strong> <br />Good eye, brain and heart health all starts with the food on your fork. Try to include two serves of fruit and five serves of vegetables in your diet each day.</p> <p>Lutein (often referred to as the “eye vitamin”) and zeaxanthin, nutrients commonly found in vegetables, are disease-fighting antioxidants that are important for eyes, brain, and heart. Both nutrients are commonly found in green leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, turnips and lettuce as well as broccoli, zucchini and brussels sprouts and eggs.</p> <p>Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish and<strong> </strong>fish oil<strong>, </strong>may also help fight off macular degeneration and cataracts, while also maintaining good heart and brain health.</p> <p><strong>5. Get social</strong> <br />If you need another excuse to catch up with friends, or hang out with family, it’s this one! Socialising stimulates the brain and can also help to encourage healthy behaviours such as exercising. “Heavy heart”: Glenn McGrath’s heartbreaking news

<p>Glenn McGrath is in mourning after his father passed away. </p> <p>The Australian cricket legend's dad, Kevin, died earlier this week after a battle with an undisclosed illness. </p> <p>Glenn's wife Sara broke the news on Wednesday, sharing an emotional post on Instagram in tribute to her father-in-law. </p> <p>“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of my beloved father in law, Kevin James McGrath,” she wrote. </p> <p>“He was a great dad, husband, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle and friend. Know the signs of a heart attack this Heart Week

<p dir="ltr">Research conducted by Heart Smart Australia, an online health and wellbeing program, has revealed the concerning reality that only one third of Australians (38% of the 1,031 people surveyed) are able to recognise the symptoms of a heart attack, despite cardiovascular disease being attributed to <a href="https://www.heartfoundation.org.au/bundles/for-professionals/key-stats-cardiovascular-disease">25% of deaths in the country</a>. </p> <p dir="ltr">And during <a href="https://campaign.heartfoundation.org.au/heart-week">Heart Week</a>, which runs from May 1 to May 7, the organisation hopes to both raise awareness and educate everyone on the warning signs, from the obvious to the lesser known, to hopefully reduce an individual’s risk of heart disease.</p> <p dir="ltr">As explained on the official website for the initiative, Heart Week is “Australia’s national heart health awareness week” and “provides an opportunity for the Australian public and health professionals to start a conversation about heart health and take positive steps to reduce their heart disease risk.” </p> <p dir="ltr">Surprisingly, the generation with the least existing awareness are the Baby Boomers, with research showing that only 33% of them are typically able to recall all of the signs and symptoms.</p> <p dir="ltr">Roughly 98% of Australians were able to call one or more of the most common symptoms to mind, while only 55% were aware that fatigue is one of such signs. Fewer still - approximately 48% - could name nausea and vomiting as another. </p> <p dir="ltr">The numbers are far lower than ideal, and as leading cardiologist and Chief Medical Officer of Heart Smart Australia Dr Ross Walker explained, “heart attack can be a silent killer; therefore, it’s crucial that Australians are aware of all the symptoms, including the lesser-known ones such as fatigue, chest discomfort and vomiting.</p> <p dir="ltr">“If you experience any of these symptoms, it's important to seek medical attention immediately. We know that acting quickly reduces damage to the heart and increases chances of survival - it really is this important. Life or death!"</p> <p dir="ltr">Cardiovascular disease (otherwise known as CVD) accounts for a staggering one hospitalisation every single minute in Australia, so this Heart Week, Dr Walker is calling on everyone to get on top of their health, to learn the symptoms, and to make the necessary changes towards reducing the impact and risk of CVD. </p> <p dir="ltr">“Heart Health Week is the perfect opportunity for Australians to take stock of their heart health and make positive changes to their lifestyle,” he explained. “For example, we know that implementing some simple changes can reduce the risk profile for developing CVD. </p> <p dir="ltr">“Looking at things like participating in regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, not smoking, getting adequate sleep and eating a healthy, balanced diet are key."</p> <p dir="ltr">Some of Dr Walker’s main tips include forming strong social networks, not overlooking the importance of a healthy diet, exercising regularly, attending regular heart health check ups with medical professionals, and knowing the symptoms. </p> <p dir="ltr">“It’s not widely known, nor understood, but those with strong ties to friends and family fare better when it comes to lowering risk of heart disease. Regularly spend some guilt free time with loved ones - it’s for your heart,” he said. </p> <p dir="ltr">And as for diet, “Variety is key here. As well as a range of fruit and vegetables, including things like Omega 3’s and turmeric can work to decrease inflammation, a key risk factor for CVD.”</p> <p dir="ltr">For exercise, Dr Walker recommends a minimum of “5 or more active days”, with no less than two-and-a-half hours each week dedicated to physical activity.</p> <p dir="ltr">Heart health check ups are crucial, according to Dr Walker, who suggests that anyone over the age of 45 (or 30 for Indigenous Australians) should contact their doctor for a check up. </p> <p dir="ltr">“This check will include things like measuring blood pressure, cholesterol levels and assessing weight,” he noted. “Identifying risk works to pre-empt issues and is often an important preventative measure.” </p> <p dir="ltr">And when it comes to the symptoms, Dr Walker believes it to be imperative to recognise them, so that you can act immediately and get help as soon as possible if someone you know may be suffering from one, “as early treatment is strongly linked to better health outcomes”.</p> <p dir="ltr">Those all-important symptoms include chest pains - pressure and tightness - as well as dizziness and light-headedness, nausea or vomiting, indigestion, sweat, an unusually pale complexion, difficulty breathing and shortness of breath, and palpitations. </p> <p dir="ltr">Additionally, when dealing with a suspected heart attack in females, it’s important to watch out for breathlessness and general unwellness, tightness and discomfort of the arms, chest pains that are reminiscent of burning and trapped wind, as well as upper back pain and pressure in the area. </p> <p dir="ltr">For more information, and to learn more about the education and support on offer, head over to Heart Smart Australia’s official website: <a href="https://heartsmartaustralia.com/">https://heartsmartaustralia.com/</a> </p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Images: Getty</em></p>

Maddy McCann's parents' heart-wrenching post on 16-year anniversary

<p>Madeleine McCann's parents have released an emotional statement on the 16-year anniversary of when their daughter was abducted. </p> <p>Kate and Gerry McCann shared that they are still hoping for a breakthrough in the search for their daughter, who would now be 19 years old. </p> <p>Maddie vanished from her family’s holiday apartment in Portugal in May 2007 at the age of three and has not been seen since.</p> <p>The grieving parents shared that even after 16 difficult years, they struggle to put their heartbreak into words. </p> <p>Writing on the official Find Madeleine Instagram Page, Kate and Gerry posted an emotional poem called <em>The Contradiction</em> by Clare Pollard before thanking people for their support.</p> <blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; "Shattered hearts": Culinary world mourns tragic death of Jock Zonfrillo

<p>Jock Zonfrillo, celebrity chef and host of <em>Masterchef Australia</em>, has passed away at 46. </p> <p>The entertainment and culinary industries are in mourning - and the fate of the hit cooking competition in question - as friends, family, and fans try to come to terms with their tragic loss. </p> <p>The news was broken - and confirmed - with a statement from Zonfrillo’s family, who wrote of their devastation and “shattered hearts” as they faced life without him. </p> <p>"With completely shattered hearts and without knowing how we can possibly move through life without him, we are devastated to share that Jock passed away yesterday," they wrote.</p> <p>"So many words can describe him, so many stories can be told, but at this time we're too overwhelmed to put them into words.</p> <p>"For those who crossed his path, became his mate, or were lucky enough to be his family, keep this proud Scot in your hearts when you have your next whisky.</p> <p>"We implore you to please let us grieve privately as we find a way to navigate through this and find space on the other side to celebrate our irreplaceable husband, father, brother, son and friend."</p> <p>Zonfrillo’s body was reportedly discovered by police after they were called to a Carlton address at around 2am for a welfare check.</p> <p>It has been said that Zonfrillo had flown home early from a trip to Europe with his wife, Lauren, and their two young children - two-year-old Isla and five-year-old Alfie - ahead of the season 15<em> Masterchef Australia </em>launch. </p> <p>Production on the series had wrapped a month prior, and while it was set to premiere on May 1, it was delayed out of respect for their late host. </p> <p>Zonfrillo’s co-star and fellow celebrity chef Jamie Oliver was one of the first to take to social media to share his grief with supporters, posting a picture of the smiling <em>Masterchef</em> judging panel alongside the caption, “I’m in total shock to wake up to the sudden death of chef Jock Zonfrillo. </p> <p>“We had the best time working together for this year’s master chef, I can’t tell how good it was to work with him! <p>A Sydney mother has shared her shock and outrage after a stranger made "rude" comments about her son. </p> <p>Tori Boyadji and her friend Lyndal were walking through Collaroy Park in Sydney's north with Tori's two-year-old son Isaac, who has Down syndrome. </p> <p>The friends were stopped by a woman who looked at Isaac and exclaimed, "Ohh is this a little downsie?"</p> <p>Tori, 28, went on to recount how the stranger said she would "never want a kid with Down syndrome" herself.</p> <p>Ms Boyadji told <a href="https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/nsw/sydney-mum-tori-boyadji-shocked-by-strangers-taunt-to-her-son/news-story/d8e3ee46ad9ed07ded6776987ff220f7" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>The Daily Telegraph</em></a> that the stranger's comments left her feeling very upset. </p> <p>"Lyndal and I just looked at each other in disbelief – I’m not easily offended but this comment truly broke my heart," she said. </p> <p>"Why would you say that to two mums with their adorable kids right there?"</p> <p>Tori said Isaac is just like any other toddler, as he loved The Wiggles and going to the beach. </p> <p>"He also happens to have Down syndrome — but this is the least interesting part of him," she said.</p> <p>Rhonda Faragher, Associate Professor of Inclusion and Diversity at Queensland University, weighed in on the exchange, and shared her thoughts that the major issue lays with the fact that people believe those with Down syndrome need to change in some way. </p> <p>"In my view, it's not the language itself, it's what's behind the language," she explained to <a href="https://au.news.yahoo.com/sydney-mums-shock-at-strangers-rude-comment-about-disabled-son-073246046.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Yahoo News Australia</em></a>.</p> <p>"That somebody in the community would feel [a child with Down Syndrome] would not be a child they'd like to have in their family without even knowing the child."</p> <p>"I think it's [disappointing] that other people don't understand that this is not a tragedy," she added. “My whole heart”: Paris Hilton shares new photos of baby boy

<p dir="ltr">Paris Hilton took to Instagram to share a series of intimate mother and son portraits with her newborn, Phoenix Barron Hilton Reum.</p> <p dir="ltr">The heiress, 42, simply captioned the photos with: “My whole heart. #MommyMonday”.</p> <p dir="ltr">Hilton uploaded four black and white photos showing her cradling her baby boy in both candid and posed shots.</p> <p dir="ltr">"I feel like my life is so complete now," she said.</p> <p dir="ltr">Friends and fans took to the comments to share their love.</p> <p dir="ltr">“You were made to be a mom Paris 💗💗💗,” commented celebrity hairstylist, Brittney Conkle.</p> <p dir="ltr">"Paris. Beautiful mummy, two angels love you," wrote one of her friends.</p> <p dir="ltr">“So happy for you!!! He’s absolutely precious!!!” commented another.</p> <p dir="ltr">“I can already tell that you're an amazing mum!! ❤️ Phoenix is so lucky to have you as a mother,” wrote another.</p> <p dir="ltr">Hilton and her husband Carter Reum welcomed their baby boy via surrogate early this year, after admitting that they hoped to start a family following their wedding in 2021.</p> <p dir="ltr">The star has previously gushed about her son in an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, where she called him a "little angel".</p> <p dir="ltr">"I'm so obsessed with him. Mediterranean diet associated with big reduction in the risk of heart disease and dementia

<p><span style="font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Open Sans', 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;">Further scientific evidence of the benefits of a “Mediterranean diet” on health have been published this week, extolling the virtues of fruit, veggies, nuts and even a little wine.</span></p> <div class="copy"> <p>In one Australian-led <a href="https://doi.org/10.1136/%20heartjnl-2022-321930" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">review</a> researchers found women who closely followed a Mediterranean diet were associated with up to 24% lower risk of cardiovascular disease and up to 23% lower risk of death from any cause.</p> <p>This is the first study to examine the association between the Mediterranean diet, cardiovascular disease, and mortality in women specifically, and is published in the journal <em>Heart.</em></p> <p>A <a href="https://bmcmedicine.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12916-023-02772-3" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UK study</a> in <em>BMC Medicine</em> has also found that men and women with a strict Mediterranean diet had up to 23% lower risk for developing dementia in comparison with those with the lowest level of adherence to the diet.</p> <p>The Mediterranean diet is rich in fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, seeds, wholegrains, and olive oil; moderate in fish and shellfish; low to moderate in wine; and low in red meat and processed meats, dairy products, animal fat, and processed foods.</p> <p>Cardiovascular disease is an umbrella term that includes heart, stroke, and blood vessel diseases, and was the <a href="https://www.aihw.gov.au/reports/heart-stroke-vascular-diseases/hsvd-facts/contents/about" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">underlying cause</a> of one in four deaths in Australia in 2019.</p> <p>“The Mediterranean diet is known for its health benefits, especially for heart health, but most studies and research into diet and heart disease are done primarily in men,” says Anushriya Pant, University of Sydney PhD candidate at the Westmead Applied Research Centre (WARC) and first author of the <em>Heart</em> paper.</p> <p>The study analysed pooled data from 16 studies published between 2006 and 2021, involving over 722,000 female participants aged 18 and above who followed the Mediterranean diet and whose cardiovascular health was monitored for an average of 12.5 years.</p> <p>The researchers found that the reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and death applied to women of all ethnicities..</p> <p>“Now we have confirmed that similar benefits apply for women’s dietary guidelines, and this reflects the strength of the Mediterranean diet for good heart health,” adds Pant.</p> <p>“In medical research, there are sex disparities in how clinical trials are designed. This creates large gaps in clinical data, which can potentially impact the development of health advice. Our work is a step towards addressing this gap.”</p> <p>The researchers acknowledge some limitations to their findings. All studies analysed were observational – so could only establish an association, not causation, between the Mediterranean diet and lowered risk of cardiovascular disease and death – and relied on self-reported food frequency questionnaires. Adjustments for potentially influencing factors also varied across the studies.</p> <p>The second study into dementia is equally supportive of the diet guidelines.</p> <p>UK scientists analysed data from 60,298 individuals from the <a href="https://www.ukbiobank.ac.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">UK Biobank</a> – a large-scale biomedical database containing genetic and health information from half a million UK participants – who completed a dietary assessment.</p> <p>Participants were followed for nine years, during which there were 882 cases of dementia.</p> <p>The researchers scored individuals based on how closely their diet matched the key features of a Mediterranean one, while taking into account their genetic risk for dementia.</p> <p>The authors say the findings indicate that, even for those with a higher genetic risk for dementia, having a better diet could reduce the likelihood of developing the condition.</p> <p>“Dementia impacts the lives of millions of individuals throughout the world, and there are currently limited options for treating this condition,” says Dr Oliver Shannon, a lecturer in Human Nutrition and Ageing at Newcastle University, and first author of the study.</p> <p> “Finding ways to reduce our risk of developing dementia is, therefore, a major priority for researchers and clinicians.</p> <p> “Our study suggests that eating a more Mediterranean-like diet could be one strategy to help individuals lower their risk of dementia.”</p> <p>The authors caution that there are limitations to this study, including that their analysis is limited to individuals who self-reported their ethnic background as white, British, or Irish, as only genetic data based on European ancestry was available.</p> <p>Further research is needed in a range of populations to determine the potential benefit for all people.</p> <p>In 2022, it was estimated that there were 401,300 <a href="https://www.aihw.gov.au/reports/dementia/dementia-in-aus/contents/summary" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Australians living with dementia</a>.
