Why Hopelessly Devoted to You wasn't meant to be in Grease

It's arguably the most famous song from the 1978 musical movie Grease.

But it turns out, Hopelessly Devoted to You was never meant to feature in the film.

The singer and actress, who died of breast cancer at age 73, was famed for her role in Sandy Olsson in the film, but her solo song in the movie was added after Grease had wrapped filming.

On The Project, Peter Helliar relayed the movie trivia after her death, saying the show-stopping ballad wasn't intended to be included in the movie.

"Hopelessly Devoted to You wasn't supposed to be in the film," he said.

"It was recorded after and it was her stand out moment from the film - apart from the bad Sandy moment at the end."

'That was filmed and written after the film was made. She had it in her contract that there was a song for her."

"The only Oscar nomination the film got was for that song," Peter continued.

Olivia last performed the song in 2019 when she reunited with her Grease co-star John Travolta for an event celebrating the hit musical in Florida.

Sporting their famed Grease costumes for the first time since the film's release, Olivia took to the microphone for a special moment on stage with John and sang a segment of the movie's ballad with the help of the audience.

Image credits: Paramount Pictures / Getty Images

Two schools cancel their productions of Grease over its outdated themes

Two high schools in Perth have cancelled their upcoming productions of the musical Grease, after students have called out the "outdated" themes of the story.

Year 7 - 10 students from Scotch College and Presbyterian Ladies‘ College in the Western Australia capital were due to perform their rendition of the iconic musical later this month, but decided against it.

The young women involved in the production believed that the play was inappropriate for modern times, saying the themes of the show were sexist, offensive and anti-feminist.

The kids at Scotch College also agreed that a different production would be better suited to a modern audience, but a replacement musical has not yet been announced.

PLC Principal Cate Begbie and Acting Scotch College Headmaster Mr Peter Burt issued a brief joint statement about the decision.

“A number of PLC students raised concerns whether the musical was appropriate in modern times,” it read.

“Scotch College listened respectfully to the girls’ concerns and both schools agreed a different musical would be better suited for their joint production in 2022.”

The 1978 movie, based on the 1971 musical, tells the story of good girl Sandy Olsson and bad boy greaser Danny Zuko falling in love during a summer fling, and later finding out they go to the same high school.

In recent times, the movie has been called out for its outdated themes, as star Olivia Newton-John claimed critics need to take into account the times in which the film as made.

"It's a movie," the 72-year-old told The Guardian. “Things were different”: Olivia Newton-John hits back at Grease sexism claims

Olivia Newton-John had addressed backlash surrounding her classic 1979 movie Grease.

In the smash hit musical, the Aussie actress plays goody-two-shoes Sandy Olsson who changes who she is at the end of the movie to impress her bad-boy boyfriend, Danny Zuko (played by John Travolta).

Despite the final scene being hailed as one of the most iconic movie screen moments, in recent times it’s been classified as sexist.

Speaking to The Guardian, Newton-John said critics need to take into account that the movie was filmed during a very different time period.

"It's a movie," the 72-year-old told the publication. "It's a story from the Fifties where things were different. Everyone forgets that, at the end, he changes for her, too. There's nothing deep in there about the #MeToo movement.

"It's just a girl who loves a guy, and she thinks if she does that, he'll like her. And he thinks if he does that, she'll like him. I think that's pretty real. People do that for each other. It was a fun love story."

Back in 2018, when the film celebrated its 40th birthday, Travolta also said he was proud of the film and how it remains a fan favourite with audiences both new and old.

"This is a film that's so timeless that keeps on giving to each new generation," he told ET at the time. "When people watch this, they just get happy. They want to become the characters they're watching. They want to sing along with it, they want to dance, they want to be part of this film. When mutual enthusiasm comes together and creates an environment you can create almost anything and we created Grease."

I'd go to sleep smelling him with my nose pressed to my pyjama sleeve,” she wrote.

Her father’s death in 1992 from liver cancer should have sent Olivia into a downward spiral –however, she flourished.

“Honestly, I had thought that I would retire, that it was the end of my career, but music kept appearing to me in my head and in my heart,” the 70-year-old explained.

“I didn't retreat from my career but rather I went through the fire and reinvented it.”

The Grease star also recounted her struggles with the first bout of cancer that was devastatingly realised on the weekend her father passed.

This was also a time when her first marriage with Lattanzi began to break down and recalls a specific instance where her doctor had asked her an uneasy question regarding troubles with a man due to some people believing “cancer in the right breast corresponds to a male figure".

Despite the rollercoaster year that overwhelmed her in 1995, the actress found love again in her second husband, John Easterling, who she met while walking the Great Wall of China.

“True love found me when I wasn't looking,” she wrote.

The couple married in 2008.

Olivia and her husband, John. Olivia Newton-John reveals why she couldn't date John Travolta during Grease

It seems almost inevitable these days for co-stars who play lovers on-screen to then translate that romantic relationship to real life. But despite Hollywood having countless celebrity couples who fell in love during filming, Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta were never one of them.

Once the popular musical Grease was released, fans of the movie were desperate to see Olivia and John together but the two of them preferred to keep their relationship with each other strictly platonic, with Olivia describing her love for John as “sisterly”.

Now, speaking on Mamamia's No Filter podcast, the actress shared the exact reason as to why the two never ended up dating, and why it was beneficial for the both of them.

“We were both with other people when we were filming, and I think, respectfully, it just didn’t happen,” said Olivia, who played Sandy in the film.

“I think it was good, because I think it kept the tension there and the chemistry. It might have been a real disaster had we decided to date, or we had a falling out or something. So, I think it was just as well that it didn’t happen. But we’re still great friends.”

Olivia, who was 28 when she played the iconic role of Sandy, shared in her book Don’t Stop Believin’ that she believed “Sandy was someone else’s role” and she was close to passing it off.

But it was John who convinced her to give it a chance, as he told her: “There was only one person on this planet I could see as Sandy, and that person was Olivia Newton-John. I told the producers.”

That’s all it took for Olivia to sign herself up and the rest is history, with the 1978 film being a smash hit and still one of the most popular musicals today.
