How the Queen conveys messages through her eclectic outfits

The Royal Family often use their wardrobes and fashion choices to reflect a statement, or even share messages without having to say anything.

It is a move flagrantly used by the Duchess of Cambridge and Sussex, who usually go out of their way to wear local designers and emblems when they are on royal tours overseas.

However it is not just the younger royals who use their wardrobes to convey a message as the Queen has used her brooches, hats and other accessories to make a statement for decades.

On Wednesday, Her Majesty wore a striking purple coat and dress with a matching hat while visiting the Royal British Legion Industries Village in Kent.

It is one of a series of events the Royal Family will be attending in commemoration of Remembrance Day.

Along with the stylish outfit, the royal wore a shining amethyst brooch that once belonged to Queen Victoria’s mother.

HELLO! magazine noted the brooch can be interpreted as a gesture of comfort for the veterans, and the gem in general is viewed as a stone for alleviating sadness and grief during a period of mourning.

It is also a stone perceived to be one of peace, with a calming presence, and even protection against harm.

However, it could just be possible the Queen enjoyed the colour of the brooch as she is one for colour coordinating.

The most senior royal has worn the brooch previously for military-related occasions, including a visit to the Poppy Factory and a Walking with the Wounded reception.

Royal sleuths love to consider the statements the Queen is making by what accessories she wears, and the speculation rammed up when the US President visited the UK.

It did not go unnoticed that the day Donald Trump landed in the UK, the monarch sported a brooch that had been given to her by former president Barack Obama.

It is nicknamed the American State Visit Brooch, and was hand selected by the Obamas to give to Queen Elizabeth during their State Visit to the UK in 2011.

While the royal did opt for a different accessory when she officially met with Trump, royal watchers were convinced that Obama’s gift was a deliberate choice.

On the second day of the president's visit, she wore a Sapphire Jubilee Brooch - a gift from Canada.

Scroll through the gallery above to see the Queen’s brooches that royal watchers say are a “message.”

Who was Princess Margaret’s “toy boy” Roddy Llewellyn?

Princess Margaret’s antics before her death in 2002 at 71 have made up some of the juiciest royal drama in the past.

When the Queen’s younger sister was seen kissing on a beach, it was just the first in a series of marriage scandals that would plague the Royal Family for decades.

Although the Queen did not love the relationship between Margaret's toy boy Roddy Llewellyn, who was 17 years her junior, she soon accepted it.

The affair between Princess Margaret and Roddy was first made aware to the public in February 1976 when the pair were spotted in swimsuits on the Caribbean island of Mustique.

The Princess was 45 and married to Lord Snowdon, when she was seen with the then 26-year-old landscape gardener.

They were already almost three years into what would be an eight-year affair.

It was only weeks after the photographs made tabloids that the Queen’s younger sister and Snowdon announced their separation, divorcing in 1978.

After their romantic holiday that pulled in a flood of coverage, the media hounded Roddy until he issued a statement.

"I much regret any embarrassment caused to Her Majesty the Queen and the royal family, for whom I wish to express the greatest respect, admiration and loyalty," it read.

"Could we please be permitted by the media, who have besieged us, to carry on with our work and private lives without further interference."

However, the two were not left alone.

"When it emerged, that Margaret was having the relationship with Roddy Llewellyn, we were absolutely in the age of tabloid gossip and celebrity news and this was the perfect story to feed that machine," Chris Granlund, executive producer of the documentary Margaret: A Rebel Princess, said.

The producer explained Princess Margaret’s story fit perfectly in the narrative of the 1970s.

"Feminism was growing but still there was a double standard that for an older woman being with a younger man at that time was a huge thing, and much more than it would be today. And so that was a part of it, so he was constantly referred to as her 'Toy Boy'.

“Politicians called him that when they were attacking the royal family in parliament. So [their relationship] was used as a weapon against the royal family."

Through the course of the relationship between Margaret and Roddy, the young gardener released a self-titled album Roddy, in 1978. However, the press’ interest remained tightly on his personal life.

Christopher Warwick, Princess Margaret’s authorised biographer, explained: “The Queen didn't approve of Roddy or of the relationship, and she thought that in all of this Roddy business, her sister was behaving badly.”

In the documentary Elizabeth: Our Queen, Lady Anne Glenconner explained a conversation the British Monarch and she shared at Princess Margaret’s funeral.

“After Princess Margaret’s funeral, the Queen, she said, ‘I’d just like to say, Anne, it was rather difficult at moments, but I thank you so much [for] introducing Princess Margaret to Roddy ’cause he made her really happy,’” Glenconner said.

After the couple’s highly publicised relationship came to an end in July of 1981, Roddy went on to marry Tatiana Soskin. Together they have three daughters – Alexandra, Natasha and Rosie.

In 2002, he opened up about his and Princess Margaret’s relationship in an open letter.

“I didn't think about the consequences of such a high-profile affair,” he said.

“If we all had crystal balls, we'd all know which horse to back, wouldn't we? I was just following my heart.

“I discovered a warm and witty woman, possessing a strong sense of duty and dedication to her country's interests, who has honoured me with her friendship since that first house party that was so filled with fun and laughter.

"We found we were all fond of charades and sing-songs. I have even sung to her accompaniment on the piano. To raise a laugh, HRH has donned a wig to sing a Sophie Tucker red hot momma number.

"In Princess Margaret I found a fine friend who could steady my restless nature and offer wise counsel," he said in a piece written by himself for the newspaper News of the World.

It’s time to talk to about your legacy

When is the last time you thought about your legacy? While it’s probably not something that’s front of mind in your day to day life, taking a moment to consider the lasting impression you will leave, and how you want to be remembered by your family, friends and members of your community is an important exercise.

Writing a will, or making sure your document is up to date, is the best way to ensure the legacy you leave is a lasting one. We’re going to run through the dangers of not having a will completed, the benefits of doing so, options for including a donation to your favourite charity, and just how easy it is to get started making your will. Talking about your legacy today is the best way to ensure your family, friends and community are taken care of tomorrow.

Dangers of not having a will

Even if you don’t have a substantial estate, not having a will, or having one that isn’t up to date, can leave your family vulnerable.

When you fail to provide a will, you leave your assets at the mercy of the Administration Act 1969. In this process, an administrator is appointed to distribute your assets to family members. While this process is completed in accordance with a set of regulations, ultimately it may not reflect your wishes.

Dying without a will (intestate) can leave your family members left with thousands of dollars in legal fees, as they seek to make sure your final wishes are fulfilled.

Benefits of completing a will

Completing a will, or making sure your current document is up to date, is the best way to ensure you have control over how your assets are distributed and that your loved ones benefit from your will. Making your final wishes known in your will can save family disputes and conflict.

Consider including a donation or gift to your community

Once you have provided for your family and loved ones, it is simple to include a gift to your charity or community. This can be a percentage of your estate, or a defined amount. Your donation need not be a large one to make a difference to help the environment, youth, health, animals, the arts or your favourite charity. You don’t have to be rich to be generous.

A method of charitable giving that is gaining momentum in New Zealand at the moment is giving through your local Community Foundation. Community foundations provide an opportunity for people to leave a gift to their community (either through donations or through a gift in their will). Their funds are pooled and invested in perpetuity; the interest from the funds are then distributed to local charities every year. Choosing to give through a community foundation means that your gift keeps giving back, every year, forever.

It’s not hard to do

Creating a will is surprisingly easy with the help of legal experts. Enlisting the help of those in the know makes seemingly complicated legal issues simple, so you can then have peace of mind knowing your final wishes will be fulfilled.

A free offer

Wakefields Lawyers are offering the chance for our Wellington Region readers to make or change a will for free when you include a donation to your favourite charities via Nikau Foundation, Wellington's community foundation.

Register between 3-7 July 2017 by emailing adrienne@nikaufoundation.org.nz.

THIS IS SPONSORED CONTENT BROUGHT TO YOU BY NIKAU FOUNDATION.

Daredevil Duke and Duchess take risky railway walk

When you’re an aide travelling with the Royal Family there’s never a dull day, and as you can see in the gallery above there can also be some very tense moments.

As the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge continue their tour of Canada they made a spur-of-the-moment decision to visit the railway line the Queen and Prince Phillip stopped in at when they were exploring the region back in 1959.

But not to be outdone by their illustrious forebears, Will and Kate decided to embark on an impromptu railway walk. As you can see in the gallery above, this tricky manoeuvre saw the royal couple sidestepping on the very edge of the track next to the train, all the while running the risk of falling into the icy cold waters below.

Royal aides’ hearts were in their mouths as the daredevil Duke and Duchess performed the manoeuvre. And justifiably so – the prospect of fishing a royal family member out of freezing cold rapids isn’t exactly that appealing.

But it looks like it was all in good fun. What your ranking in the family pecking order says about you

You’ve heard it before: the oldest child is the most successful, the middle child are better diplomats and the youngest is the rebel. It’s been long believed that your birth order influences your personality, career and even behaviour, but is any of this backed by science?

Back in the 1920s, Austrian physician Alfred Adler first championed the significance of birth order but since then, many of his findings have been dismissed due to a lack of scientific reasoning. Over the years, despite the wealth of research, the scientific community hasn’t come to a consensus about the effects of birth order, most concluding that the impact of birth order is likely to be small compared to other factors. Nevertheless, birth order is fun to debate and there are some interesting findings that are generally consistent across the research. So from eldest to youngest, here are some of the most interesting findings about what your family pecking order says about you.

If you’re the eldest…

A good deal of research supports the notion that first-borns tend to be achievement-oriented and thrive in leadership positions. A 2012 paper reviewing more than 500 studies on birth order from the past 20 years found that firstborns are more likely to take leadership positions, stick to rules and order, and strive for achievement. Belgian psychologists Vassilis Saroglou and Laure Fiasse noted in a 2003 study, published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences, “Firstborns tend to be responsible, competitive and conventional.”

Key characteristics:

Reliable

Conscientious

Cautious

Ambitious

Competitive

Famous first borns:

Hillary Clinton

Oprah

Winston Churchill

If you’re in the middle…

The middle child is popularly believed to be the least enviable position, but a 2010 review of birth order studies found that middle children tend to be sociable, very loyal in their relationships, and good at relating to both older and younger people. As middle children are literally “stuck in the middle”, they also turn out to be good negotiators and compromisers, as well as being co-operative and flexible.

“We discovered during our research, the stereotype does not correspond to reality. Far from being doomed to failure and loneliness, middle children are more likely than their siblings to be successful and enjoy strong social lives and flourishing careers,” Katrin Schumann, co-author of book The Secret Power Of Middle Children, told Daily Mail.

Key characteristics

People-pleasing

Diplomatic

Peacemaker

Sociable

Flexible

Famous middle-borns:

Martin Luther King Jr.

Bill Gates

Stella McCartney

If you’re the youngest…

Studies consistently show the baby of the family is more creative, rebellious, attention-seeking and confident than their elder siblings. “Firstborns are held to a higher standard. As kids come into the birth order, parents loosen up,” explains Dr. Kevin Leman, a psychologist and the author of The Birth Order Book and The First-Born Advantage. While the youngest tend to be charming and popular, they can also be manipulative. “They got away with murder as kids and know how to get around people,” Dr Leman said.

Key characteristics:

Fun-loving

Manipulative

Outgoing

Funny

Attention-seeking

Famous youngest-borns:

Mark Twain

Prince Harry

Jim Carrey
