You’ll never believe the extreme cost of Duchess Meghan’s New York baby shower

Duchess Meghan arrived in New York City to see her friends and celebrate that her first child with husband Prince Harry is due soon with a star-studded $300,000 (NZD$ 437,445) baby shower

With 15 of her closest friends around her, the Duchess was sure to have enjoyed herself, especially considering her co-hosts Amal Clooney (George Clooney's wife) and Serena Williams were picking up the bill.

The baby shower was held at the Mark Hotel, where guests stayed in the $75,000-a-night (NZD$ 109,361) Grand Penthouse Suite. This astonishing cost makes it the most expensive hotel room in the USA.

The cost of Duchess Meghan’s baby shower is an extremely high number, coming in at a staggering $300,000 (NZD$ 437,445). Here is how much everything cost:

The Mark Hotel Grand Penthouse Suite: US$150,000 (NZD$ 218,722)

Five nights in a one-bedroom suite at the Mark Hotel: US$9,982.05 (NZD$ 14,555)

Dinner for five at the Polo Bar: US$420 (NZD$ 612)

Two Royal Protection officers: US$86,316 (NZD$ 125,861)

Flights from London to NYC: US$26,202 (NZD$ 38,206)

17 Away carry-on suitcases: US$3,825 (NZD$ 5,577)

Harpist: US$625 (NZD$ 909)

Roses: US$400 (NZD$ 583)

Lunch: US$78 approx. (NZD$ 113)

Afternoon tea: US$25 approx. (NZD$ 26)

Mandarin tree: US$140 approx. (NZD$ 204)

Trek bicycle: US$609.99 approx. (NZD$ 888)

Cotton candy machine: US$199.99 (NZD$ 290)

Total cost: US$279.201.98 (NZD$ 407,116)

Along with human rights lawyer Amal Clooney and tennis legend Serena Williams, the star-studded event was attended designer Misha Nonoo, stylist Jessica Mulroney, former Suits co-star Abigail Spencer, Oprah Winfrey's best friend and TV anchor Gayle King, and makeup artist Daniel Martin.

However, many are interested in whether or not the baby shower breaks royal protocol. Royal correspondent and commentator James Brookes told the ABC that the reporting around whether or not Duchess Meghan breaks royal protocol is unfounded.

"There's been a lot of talk, particularly in digital versions of the British press, of her breaking so-called 'protocol'," he said.

"A lot of it is rubbish. The 'shutting her own car door' is a good example – many times, the Royals have someone there to open their car door for them and they're straight out and into greeting people, but if there's nobody there to shut it and it's in the way, they'll close it themselves," he explained.

"Remember, they are human, after all. Meghan's putting her own stamp on her Royal role.”

Scroll through the gallery to see the star studded baby shower.

Do you think the baby shower breaks royal protocol? Amal Clooney's emotional tribute to husband George

Amal Clooney has given a rare romantic toast to her husband Hollywood star George Clooney as he was honoured with an American Film Industry (AFI) Life Achievement Award earlier this week.

Amal admitted she was nervous stepping into the spotlight but wanted to pay tribute to her husband.

"It's somehow easier for me to address a court on behalf of a detainee than to speak publicly, as I'm doing for the first time tonight for my husband," the international human rights lawyer said from the stage.

The barrister, 40, then shared some never-before-revealed details of their romance.

"I met George when I was 35 and starting to become quite resigned to the idea that I was going to be a spinster," she said. "Then we met, started hiding out in my London flat and very soon it felt like no matter what happened I would never want to be with anyone else. I couldn't sleep when we were apart, and I'm told I would display a particular grin and head tilt when reading his text messages or the letters that he would hide in my bag.

"Five years later, none of that has changed," she continued. "He is the person who has my complete admiration, and also the person whose smile makes me melt every time. My love, what I have found with you is the great love that I always hoped existed. And seeing you with our children, Ella and Alexander, is the greatest joy in my life. You fill our home with laughter and happiness and that's even before the children have worked out that 'Dada' is actually Batman."

She also spoke about her husband’s generosity, his fight for justice, and his witty sense of humour.

“Although George’s modesty attributes much of the success we are celebrating here tonight to luck, I think it’s incredible talent and character that got him here and these attributes also make him an amazing husband and father,” she said.

George, who visibly teared up during Amal's speech, also gave a heartwarming speech when he took to the stage to accept his AFI award from past winner Shirley MacLaine.

"So yesterday, my two children turned one year old," the Oscar-winner said, adding: "I thought if you had a successful career that you weren't really going to be able to have one great love in your life. And then Amal walked in.

"And now we've got these two knuckleheads," Clooney continued. "And every day they make me feel small. And Amal...you make every single day, every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, as special as today."

George Clooney twins make TV debut

It’s been four months since George and Amal Clooney welcomed their genetically-blessed twins into the world, and everyone is still dying to get their first glimpse. Well, now they have – sort of.

Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live to chat about life as a new dad, George asked the audience if they’d like to see his bubs, who he said were backstage. Of course, everyone said yes!

But the “twins” actually turned out to be Matt Damon, who has been embroiled in a hilarious, long-lasting feud with Kimmel, pushing an empty double pram and carrying a nappy bag and toys.

“I’m his manny. It’s a nanny who’s a man,” Matt said, to which Jimmy joked, “You’re not a man!”

“That’s not what your wife said,” Matt retorted.

“So based on your physique I guess you’re breast feeding the children too?” Jimmy clapped back.

“No, no, I actually just wanted them to get their nap, so I brought them to a place where they wouldn’t be woken up by laughter,” Matt cheekily replied.

See the hilarious exchange for yourself here:

When the focus was finally back on George, the star got candid about how he’s coping with first-time fatherhood, admitting he was afraid of “breaking” the twins because “they’re so small”.

“I changed diapers until yesterday. I was good at it,” he told Jimmy. “I flipped them over, I don’t care. It’s like cleaning up your dog’s poop. It’s not that big a deal. Then we introduced the children to solid food on Friday and how that goes in as a carrot and how it comes out the way it comes out is shocking.”

George Clooney reveals wife Amal was sexually harassed

George Clooney is the latest Hollywood star to speak out about sexual harassment in the wake of allegations against Harvey Weinstein, revealing in a new interview that his own wife, human rights lawyer Amal, has experienced it in her line of work.

“My wife is a very smart, very together, very accomplished human rights lawyer and she said, ‘There have been times in my life, in the law community, [that] I had to tell someone to knock it off,’ so it happens everywhere,” the 56-year-old told Extra.

The Money Monster star added that he hopes the growing number of accusations of sexual harassment and assault will change the culture of Hollywood heavyweights abusing their positions of power.

“This wasn’t just guys hitting on girls, this is assault,” he said. “If we don’t address this and really go after Harvey, it will come back. There has to be some good that comes out of all of this and the good is going to have to be that women feel safe to speak up, that they are believed and hopefully be enough that it scares any man who would behave like that from doing it.”

In another interview with Variety, Clooney slammed director Woody Allen (who has long been the subject of sexual assault allegations himself) for defending Weinstein and urging against a “witch hunt”.

“That’s a stupid thing to say,” Clooney fumed. “The reality is, it’s not a witch hunt to these women who are trapped in a hotel room and told they’re going to get a part and, suddenly, here comes Harvey Weinstein in his birthday suit. That’s not a witch hunt; that’s an assault."

George and Amal increase security for twins

Although the world is yet to see a picture of George and Amal’s twins, the couple are taking no chances when it comes to the security of their beloved newborns.

The 39-year-old lawyer gave birth to Alexander and Ella in June and the household has heavily increased its security after a recent breach in security by paparazzi.

"Amal is already concerned for their safety, which has only got worse since the birth of their children. The latest incident has really galvanised her and George," an insider told Grazia.

"They are hell-bent on doing whatever it takes to protect the twins and they’ve told their security advisors that money is not an issue when it comes to ensuring their safety."

George recently declared he would see French magazine Voici be “prosecuted to the full extent of the law" after the publication obtained photos of the twins by illegally scaling a fence on one of the Clooney properties.

"Make no mistake: the photographers, the agency and the magazine will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. The safety of our children demands it," George said at the time.

This event follows several security breaches in past months and George and Amal have added “video surveillance, bulletproof walls, panic rooms and basement bunkers" to make sure their children are protected.

When the twins were first born, it was believed that George hired baby bouncers to keep watch over them even while they slept in the nursery.

“Fatherhood was a long time coming for George so he’s not risking his brood coming to any harm. The baby bouncers are just the start," a source told RadarOnline.

The publication claimed the bodyguards cost over AU$422,000 and over AU$169,000 was spent on a high-tech security system on the family’s UK property.

How George and Amal Clooney first met

George and Amal’s love story is something of a modern fairytale – two people, from seemingly opposite walks of life, falling head-over-heels in love. So just how did a Hollywood heartthrob find himself in the same room as one of the world’s most distinguished international human rights lawyers? Well, according to George’s father Nick, it’s quite the story.

He revealed to People that the couple first met back in 2013 at a dinner party also attended by George’s parents, and the whole family – especially George – was instantly smitten with the barrister.

“[George’s mother] Nina and I were actually the ones who answered the door when Amal came in,” Nick recalled. “She introduced herself to us and we talked. She was obviously very charming, gorgeous and so clearly accomplished, but by the time we had supper that night, it was clear there was a kindness to her and an inclusiveness.”

Nick could see instantly that his notorious bachelor of a son was already falling hard for Amal. “By the end of supper, I started looking over at Nina and saying, ‘Look ouuuut, this could be trouble for this young man!” he said. “I really think by the time that first [meeting] was over, his and her fates were sealed, both of them. She was so remarkable and he was so remarkable around her.”

Less than a year later, they were engaged, and on September 27, 2014, the pair tied the knot in a romantic ceremony at Ca’ Farsetti palace on the banks of Venice’s Grand Canal. Just last week, the lovebirds welcomed twins Ella and Alexander into the world, whom Nick describes as “gorgeous”.

George Clooney hires bodyguards for twins

Amal Clooney gave birth to the twins less than a week ago but George is taking no chances when it comes to their children’s safety.

George has reportedly hired security guards to watch over twins Ella and Alexander.

The security will even guard the newborns while they sleep in the nursery.

“Fatherhood was a long time coming for George so he’s not risking his brood coming to any harm. The baby bouncers are just the start,” a source told RadarOnline.

It is believed that the bodyguards cost $422,000 a year and that the new parents also recently spent $169,000 on a high-tech security system for their UK property.

“He and Amal have really spoiled the twins,” the source told RadarOnline. “There’s been so much work done on the house already for them.”

Amal’s job as a human rights attorney places her in greater danger than the average person so the couple began to increase their security while she was expecting.

"We decided to be much more responsible, to avoid the danger. I will not go to South Sudan anymore and or the Congo [and] Amal will no longer go to Iraq and she will avoid places where she knows she is not welcome," George told Paris Match magazine before the birth of the twins.

"How can we not be anxious when faced with this immense responsibility? To give birth to a child in this world, nevermind two,” George said.

“We are very happy, very excited, but also a bit nervous. It's normal.”

George Clooney’s father gushes over new grandchildren

Yesterday, George and Amal Clooney welcomed two gorgeous new bubs into the world, twins Ella and Alexander, and the newborns’ grandparents couldn’t be more thrilled. Nick Clooney and Nina Warren first laid eyes on the two-hour-old babies over Skype, since the star couple had arranged the birth to take place in London. Nevertheless, they’re clearly proud as punch.

“They’re gorgeous,” Nick told FOX19. He revealed that while both babies have dark hair, one in particular appears to have taken after their heartthrob dad.

“Nina swears they have George’s nose,” Nick said. “Not both of them – one of them. The little boy looked like he had [George’s] nose, his little profile.”

And as for the names? The new grandparents “love” them. “Both sound terrific.”

Nick confirmed that the new parents-of-two are doing “wonderfully well,” albeit exhausted, naturally. “George, well, his eyes were glazed so I’m not sure that he was sober,” he joked.

Amal’s parents have also spoken out about their excitement for the new arrivals. Baria Alamuddin, who was present with her daughter for the birth, said the family is “over the moon”. “It was a beautiful delivery,” she told AFP. “The babies are beautiful and are doing well.”

Ramzi Alamuddin, Amal’s father, also issued a statement from his home in Beirut. “They are in great heath,” he said. “All is perfect.”

We don’t know about you, but we can’t wait to see the first snaps of the beautiful, newly-expanded family together!
