63-year-old mother accepts blame for deadly inferno at zoo

A fire broke out in a zoo in Western Germany just minutes into the new year, killing more than 30 animals.

A 60-year-old woman and her two adult daughters have turned themselves in after hearing that the blaze killed five orangutans, two gorillas and a chimpanzee as well as many more monkeys, birds and bats.

The women bought five Chinese lanterns, which are banned locally and in most of Germany for over a decade. 63-year-old university professor becomes accidental model

A 63-year-old university professor has become an accidental model after reporters believed she was a fashion star.

Lyn Slater, who teaches at Fordham University's School Of Social Service in New York, was waiting for a friend outside the Lincoln Centre during New York Fashion Week when reporters approached her, believing she was fashion industry insider.

“All of a sudden these photographers started to surround me and take pictures of me,” Slater told TODAY Style.

“A couple of journalists from Japan had approached me and were asking questions. Tourists started to see this and thought, ‘That must be some important person in fashion!’ so they started to take pictures of me. I had a huge crowd of people around me.”

The moment was pivotal for Slater, who decided to launch a fashion blog, named the Accidental Icon, to document her outfits and to show people that older women can dress fabulously.

“I get a lot of emails from younger people saying... you're making us feel like getting old is fun and cool, and that you can do whatever you want at whatever age,” she told TODAY.

The fashion industry soon caught on to Slater’s style, and earlier this year she was signed to modelling agency Elite London. Slater has posed for several high-profile brands, including Comme Des Garcons, Mango and Valentino.

Slater’s photos are challenging ageist beliefs of what women of a certain age can wear.

“Don’t wear mini skirts, don’t wear crop tops, don’t expose your cleavage, don’t wear low-rise jeans – I ignore them. Age is never a variable I use to make decisions about what I wear,” she said.

Slater wears what she feels comfortable in – and she says that’s the key to feeling good about yourself.

“There’s actual science that shows how [what you're wearing] impacts your ability to perform and your emotions,' she added. 'It’s called enclothed cognition. And for me, the way that I’ve been embracing clothing and reinventing myself at this time in my life is making me young.”

Couple married 63 years pass away minutes apart

A loving couple from the US, living in a nursing home in South Dakota, Missouri, have passed away within minutes of each other, after being together for 63 years.

Henry and Jeanette De Lange were married in 1953, and had five children together. Henry was a Korean War Veteran and Jeanette was a musician. Both were living at the Platte Care Centre nursing home when their health took a turn for the worse.

Jeanette, 87, was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease while Henry, 86, struggled with prostate cancer. Henry was a model of dedication, visiting Jeanette multiple times as day even as his condition deteriorated, but a fall made matter worse.

Their son Lee told US radio station KSFY.com, “Wednesday, when we checked him in, he said ‘I don’t know how many more days I have Lee. How many more days the good Lord will have me here’.”

Jeanette De Lange was first to pass, at 5.10pm in the room of her nursing home.

Lee told US radio station KSFY.com that his brother broke the news to his father, “My brother Keith said to my dad, said ‘mum’s gone to heaven. You don’t have to fight anymore, you can go too if you want’. He was laying in bed. He, for the first time, opened his eyes, looked intently over where mom was. Closed his eyes back down. Laid back down, died about 5 or 10 minutes after that.”

After being together for 63 years Henry and Jeanette De Lange passed within minutes of each other in the same nursing home. Our thoughts are with the family.

Have you ever had to deal with a dying loved one?
