Brooklyn Nine-Nine star dies at age 61

“We lost a comedy giant today”: Norm Macdonald dead at 61

<p>The comedy world is in mourning after Norm Macdonald died of cancer on Tuesday at age 61. </p> <p>The Canadian stand-up comic and <em>Saturday Night Live</em> cast member <span>had been battling cancer in private</span> for nearly a decade, according to his lifelong friend Lori Jo Hoekstra who was with him when he dies. </p> <p>"He was most proud of his comedy", she said.</p> <p><span>"He never wanted the diagnosis to affect the way the audience or any of his loved ones saw him."</span></p> <p><span>"Norm was a pure comic. He once wrote that ‘a joke should catch someone by surprise, it should never pander.’ He certainly never pandered. Norm will be missed terribly.”</span></p> <p><span>Norm was known in the comedic circle for his signature deadpan delivery and dry style of humour that quickly made him an icon of the craft.</span><span></span></p> <p><span>Norm's impressions of </span>famous figures, such as TV star Burt Reynolds, became a teaching tool and huge inspiration for up and coming comics. </p> <p><span>“I essentially ripped off his delivery when I first started acting,” actor and fellow Canadian Seth Rogen tweeted. </span></p> <p><span>“I would stay up specifically to watch him on talk shows. He was the funniest guest of all time. We lost a comedy giant today. One of the all time greats.”</span></p> <p><span>Norm shot to fame when he was cast on <em>Saturday Night Live</em> in 1993 after performing in comedy circuits in Canada for several years. </span></p> <p><span>He performed on <em>SNL</em> until 1998, serving as a co-host of Weekend Update for three seasons.</span></p> <p><span>Norm then went on to star in his own ABC sitcom, <em>The Norm Show</em>, from 1999 until 2001, and also became a hilarious regular on a series of talk shows. </span></p> <p><span>In 2018, he hosted a Netflix talk show, <em>Norm Macdonald Has a Show</em>, that was inspired by his podcast and garnered an international audience. </span></p> <p><span>Hundred of comedians have shared their stories of Norm on Twitter in remembrance of the comedy giant and all he did for the world of show business. </span></p> <p><span>Actor Josh Gad wrote, "Absolutely gutted. One of the most underrated and hilarious SNL performers."</span></p> <p><span>Writer and director Edgar Wright also tweeted, saying, "Of the many addictive rabbit holes you can disappear down on the internet, the most pleasurable is ‘Norm MacDonald chat show appearances'."</span></p> <p><span>“Thanks for all the laughs Norm, very sorry to see you go.”</span></p> <p><em>Image credit: Getty Images</em></p>

Angelina Jolie selling iconic French Chateau for $61 million

<p><span>Angelina Jolie is selling her estate in Provence, France, after several legal issues.</span></p> <p><span>The actress filed for divorce from fellow actor Brad Pitt over five years ago, yet the couple remain linked due to the glorious French Chateau that was once a blessing, but now a plague for them.</span></p> <p><span>The pair purchased the estate back in 2008, for a reported €45 million (AUD $72 million).</span></p> <p><span>The incredible property includes several residential and non-residential structures, from a rundown, adorable chapel to a high-functioning farm.</span></p> <p><span>What gave the chateau a firm reputation, other than its high-profile owners, was its glorious pink wine which won them Wine Spectator’s award for best rosé in the world, back in 2013.</span></p> <p><span>Jolie claims since the couple split back in 2016, Pitt has prevented her from selling the estate.</span></p> <p><span>In June, the mother-of-four even went so far as to file a petition to ask the judge to lift the order that prevents a transfer of assets so she could finally be rid of the property.</span></p> <p><span>Considering the couple purchased the estate prior to their nuptials in 2014, Jolie’s lawyers say the glorious French chateau should solely be considered hers.</span></p> <p><span>“After all these years of trying to extricate herself from being business partners with her ex-husband on acceptable financial terms, Ms. Jolie is extremely desirous of closing the pending agreement for the sale of Nouvel, LLC, and requests that the Court issue an order lifting the ATROs and specifying that they shall not apply to Ms. Jolie’s sale of Nouvel, LLC,” the actress’ legal team stated in a document that was obtained by <em>Us Weekly.</em></span></p> <p><span>The rumour mill has claimed the actress has plans to sell it to a willing buyer for an estimate of USD $61 million.</span></p>

Roxette singer Marie Fredriksson dies aged 61

<p>Marie Fredriksson, frontwoman of Swedish pop-rock band Roxette, has died at the age of 61 following a long illness.</p> <p>The singer-songwriter passed away on Monday after “a 17-year long battle with cancer”, her management team said in a statement.</p> <p>“You were the most wonderful friend for over 40 years,” her Roxette bandmate Per Gessle said in the statement.</p> <p>“I’m proud, honoured and happy to have been able to share so much of your time, talent, warmth, generosity and sense of humour … Things will never be the same.”</p> <p>Fredriksson was first diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2002. She underwent treatments and survived, but had health problems as a result of radiation therapy, <em><a href="https://www.theguardian.com/music/2019/dec/10/roxette-singer-marie-fredriksen-dies-aged-61">The Guardian</a> </em>reported. She was able to continue performing until 2016, when her doctors advised her to focus on her health.</p> <p>Debuting as Roxette in 1986, Fredriksson and Gessle achieved success with the single <em>Neverending Love</em>. The duo went on to receive international recognition with <em>The Look</em>, followed by <em>Listen to Your Heart</em>, <em>It Must Have Been Love </em>and <em>Joyride</em>. For the time being, we’re just going to relax and enjoy this moment.”</p> <p>According to<span> <a href="https://www.fertilityassociates.co.nz/media/1052/vii-01donorandsurrogacybasics.pdf">Fertility Associates</a>, all surrogacy treatments in New Zealand need to be approved by the Ethics Committee on Assisted Reproductive Technology (ECART) before they can start. </span></p>

Couple die hours apart after 61 years of marriage

<p>For 60 years, a couple lived happily ever after together. The pair were inseparable.</p> <p>Even in death.</p> <p>Peter and Ruth Bedford both died on Monday, May 14, nine hours apart from each other, one year past their 60th anniversary. </p> <p>"It's good they went together," daughter Caroline Bedford said. "They would have been completely lost without each other."</p> <p>Bedford said her father was admitted to hospital on Saturday evening.</p> <p>"I think Mum decided he wasn't coming back," she said.</p> <p>"She died at 10am on Monday morning and I got a message to Dad. He followed her about nine hours later," she said. </p> <p>Peter and Ruth Bedford, 86 and 83, were married on December 30, 1957. </p> <p>Peter had emigrated to New Zealand, as a "10 pound pom", where he fell in love with Ruth, from Wellington.</p> <p>He was a rural man and a deep thinker, she eventually became a law clerk. But the pair were perfect for each other, Bedford said.</p> <p>The couple loved tramping together, music, and going to concerts.</p> <p>"Mum had a philosophical, intellectual brain and she loved to debate. And Dad was a big thinker too."</p> <p>"They loved animals and they loved their garden," Caroline Bedford said. "They should have entered them into competition they were so good."</p> <p>The couple were well known in the Kaikohe community where they had lived since 1980, and were heavily involved in the A&amp;P Show.</p> <p>Before then, the Bedford family had been raised in rural Manawatu. Caroline remembered growing up with sheep, cows, horses, possums, magpies, white rats, cats and a dog. </p> <p>"They were very rural people. Well, Dad was. Mum liked the arts and socialising," she said. </p> <p>"They were both fiercely independent. But very kind and helpful, especially in their community. </p> <p>The couple are survived by their three children Michael, Simon and Caroline, and two grandchildren.</p> <p>"They were very proud of their children and their grandchildren, I know that," she said. </p> <p>Caroline said her daughter Cadence, 31, had said: "My Grandad didn't speak much, but when he spoke people listened."</p> <p>Their funeral is on Wednesday at Squire Funeral Services in Kaikohe.</p> <p>What are your thoughts?</p> <p><em>Written by Laine Moger. Why this 61-year-old man buried himself alive for 3 days

<p>Earlier this year, a man was buried alive. It’s likely you didn’t hear about it on the news, and that’s probably because he did it himself. Confused? Let’s backtrack a little.</p> <p>Decades ago, Irishman John Edwards was an alcoholic and a drug addict. He was homeless, suicidal, abused, and had been in and out of psychiatric hospitals. He had cancer twice, a liver transplant, battled hepatitis C and watched too many of his loved ones die from their addictions. That’s when he decided enough was enough.</p> <p>Now 61, Edwards is 27 years sober and spends his life giving back to the community and helping others just like him overcome their addictions. Having set up a number of rehabilitation centres, he decided to take his cause one step further, burying himself alive to raise awareness of addiction and mental illness, and to prevent others ending up in “an early grave”.</p> <p style="text-align: center;"><iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fjohnedwardswalkingfree%2Fvideos%2F1274367152644089%2F&amp;show_text=0&amp;width=560" width="560" height="315" style="border: none; overflow: hidden;" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" allowtransparency="true" allowfullscreen="true"></iframe></p> <p>He spent 72 hours in a coffin, which had been expanded and modified to provide fresh air, internet and supplies. <a href="http://www.thejournal.ie/john-edwards-belfast-grave-3267928-Mar2017/" target="_blank"><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">Every few hours</span></strong></a>, he would “speak to [his followers] from the grave before they get there and show them hope,” as part of his regular “GraveChats”.</p> <p>In an interview with <a href="https://www.thesun.ie/news/664621/dublin-man-who-was-buried-alive-for-three-days-speaks-about-his-freaky-experience/" target="_blank"><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">The Sun</span></strong></a> after coming back from the dead, as it were, Edwards referred to the moment he was lowered into the ground as “surreal” and “freaky”. “When you’re actually in [a coffin] alive and the lid goes down on it and your wife and your friends are throwing down the soil on top of it – quite enthusiastically. I might add – it’s just freaky because your life flashes before you.”</p> <p>Despite admitting to the <a href="http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-northern-ireland-39135081" target="_blank"><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">BBC</span></strong></a> the live burial is a “bit of a gimmick,” Edwards says it’s all worth it if he can change the lives of those struggling with addiction. “I'm desperate to reach as many people as possible.”</p> <p>Could you stand to be buried alive – even for a good cause and with every convenience at your fingertips – for three days? Actor Bill Paxton passes away aged 61

My wife helped me lose 14 kilos at 61 years old

<p><em><strong>Greg, 68, and Sheryl, 61, took up competitive bodybuilding later in life. Here, they share why bodybuilding has made them fitter, stronger, slimmer and more confident in their 60s.</strong></em></p> <p>Too old to change and do new things? No way, age is just a number and a state of mind. Maybe the following will give you the motivation to step out of your comfort zone and you just might surprise yourself.</p> <p>After many years in collar and tie occupations my wife and I decided to follow our interests and have a change of career. Having run many marathons and half marathons, we changed our focus and sporting interest into a lifestyle and became personal trainers in 1995 at the age 40 and 48. Sheryl had got into weight training while recovering from a broken leg, and went on to do a couple of bodybuilding competitions, with some success.</p> <p>In 2004 at age 49, she decided to do more cycling and while out training for the “round Taupo” race was knocked off her bike and badly injured her legs. It was over six months before she was able to walk without crutches and she was told that she was not going to be able to run again, and the chance of bodybuilding again was very slight. However determination saw her back jogging and in 2008, back into bodybuilding.</p> <p>By 2009 my wife had been an active and competitive body builder for 17 years and at 54 she thought it might be time to retire. For those 17 years, I had just been a supporter, helper and bag carrier, and never thought it was my thing. But at age 61, I must have had a rush of blood to the brain and told my wife that I had better give this body building a go, before I get too old. So her retirement was put on hold! (She has since gone on to win the INBA Natural Olympia World Women’s over 60 years’ title.)</p> <p>On the left is a photo I had taken in October 2009. I was 76kg and mostly fat. The picture on the right was takne in August 2011 (aged 63) when I entered my first competition in Taupo, weighing 62kg. That’s a 14kg reduction in body weight.</p> <p><img width="499" height="500" src="https://oversixtydev.blob.core.windows.net/media/26110/transformation_499x500.jpg" alt="Transformation" style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"/></p> <p>Since then I have competed in about 20 competitions, always in the Men’s 60 years-plus class, and together with my wife we compete in the mixed pairs.</p> <p>Yes, it has become a bit of an addiction and I can say that it is not really the actual workouts that I enjoy, but the results. It is a good feeling when the weight drops off and for the first time in my life I could see some muscle definition and a six-pack! We also always endeavour to enter drug tested competitions.</p> <p>Forget the myths, such as “you have to starve yourself” or “your muscles will turn to fat when you stop”. There is immense satisfaction in being able to stand on stage with other over 60 year olds, and look like you are meant to be there!</p> <p>I have found that all the other body builders of all ages are very supportive and there is always a good atmosphere back stage at the competitions.</p> <p>All I can say is, it is worth giving it a go. At the very least you will become fitter, stronger, slimmer and more confident. You will need to find a trainer or a gym that has experience in body building and has the necessary nutritional knowledge as the food you eat plays a huge part in contest preparation. 61-year-old grandma plays 38 straight tennis matches for charity

<p>Meet Bonnie Vona, a 61-year-old grandmother who just broke the world record of most consecutive singles tennis matches played.</p> <p>Vona set out to complete the feat on the Fourth of July weekend in the US to raise money for the children and spouses of military service members.</p> <p>After playing a marathon 38 straight tennis matches over the weekend, Vona,a  mother of an army officer, succeeded in both her goals of becoming the new world record holder and raising awareness for the families of military officers.</p> <p>What an inspiration!
