Why you should never walk barefoot through airport security

The airport security check certainly isn’t the most enjoyable part of an overseas vacation. And while most people are happy enough to pass without a pat-down from security, travellers have warned to be extra careful on their way through.

Especially those who aren’t wearing any socks.

Heightened security measures at many airports require travellers to remove their footwear, and travel hygiene experts warns all this foot traffic can put holidaymakers at a high risk of contracting a fungal infection like athlete’s foot.

With millions of people passing around the security area shoeless, there’s a huge risk of contracting something nasty when passing the checkpoint if you’re not wearing socks.

Rami Calis, a podiatry instructor told WebMD: “The floor is often dirty where all those people walk through security. And it doesn't get any sun.

“I haven't taken any samples from these areas, but if we do I bet we'll find 101 different things.”

Calis recommends always leaving your socks on when passing the check, and if you’re wearing sandals having a spare pair packed in your bag to slip on.
