Teen saves money by flying from Sheffield to Essex via Germany
A thrifty English teenager took an international flight home because it was cheaper than the three-and-a-half hour train journey.
Jordon Cox, 18, who blogs as The Coupon Kid for MoneySavingExpert.com, wrote on the website that he travelled an extra 1637 kilometres and saved £7.72 by flying home to Essex from Sheffield via Berlin.
"I even had enough Euros spare for a currywurst sausage by the Brandenburg Gate," he said.
Cox said he booked a cheap train to Sheffield, but the best return ticket was £47.
He did some investigating, and found that flying from East Midlands Airport to Berlin, spending seven hours exploring the city before flying to Stansted and getting the bus home was cheaper than a single train journey in England.
Cox even managed to throw in a return train ticket to Berlin city centre, enjoying a free tour of a government building and lunch, and still came in under budget.
The entire journey took him 13 hours door to door.
He wrote: "Ok, this isn't for everyone as it can take a whole day to get to your final destination, but if you're not in a rush, your focus is saving money and you fancy a little walk around a European city, it's worth a look."
Cox admitted that he knew flying was not very environmentally friendly and he would not be doing it every time he travelled.
"However this was the cheapest way for me to get home and I got to enjoy a 'free' mini holiday to a city I've always wanted to visit."
