5 secret ways to save on airport parking

It seems today that parking at the airport can cost you more than your flight. Use these handy tips to save a bundle.

1. Use a comparison site

Don’t just go straight to the airport’s website and assume that’s the best deal you’re going to get. Websites like finder.com.au and compareparking.com.au will give you the rundown on all your parking options so you can find the best rate. They are available for most major airports and you can even click through and book straight away.

2. Book in advance

The most expensive option for parking usually involves just arriving on the day and driving in. Book ahead online (either through one of the comparison sites above or direct through the airport) and you will save money. You can also access exclusive online-only deals for multiple days or take advantage of offer codes for first time users.

3. Avoid the airport itself

Parking within the airport grounds is going to cost the most, but many reputable operators set up parking lots a short distance away and offer really competitive rates. They will also offer a free transfer (usually a shuttle bus) to the airport so you can make your flight. Just remember to factor in a little extra time for your journey.

4. Book a hotel with parking

Major airports are always surrounded by multiple hotels and most of these will also have a sizeable car park. Look out for deals that offer you a stay before you depart and then let you leave your car there for the duration. It makes for a very short trip to the airport in the morning, usually on the hotel’s free shuttle, and then an easy pick up on the way out.

5. Join a reward scheme

If you fly a lot and want to park at the airport, many lots will offer a reward scheme for their ‘frequent parkers’. This can result in special discounts or bonuses over time, so it makes sense to stay loyal to the one group. They might even throw in nice extras like a free car wash while you’re away.
