How Fergie is set to make royal history at Princess Beatrice’s wedding

Sarah Ferguson has made quite the comeback into the Royal Family as of late.

And now, the Duchess of York is set to make history when Princess Beatrice gets married next year.

Fergie could become the first mother-of-the-bride at a Royal Wedding to be recorded on the marriage-certificate.

It is predicted that Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi will tie the knot at St George’s chapel – the same place where younger sister Princess Eugenie and cousin Prince Harry also wed.

Therefore the ceremony would be a Church of England one.

Currently, the Church of England's marriage certificates only list the father-of-the-bride’s name and occupation, but now, a major overhaul is set to take place for church marriage records.

A private members’ bill brought about by the Bishop of St Albans, Dr Alan Smith, received Royal Assent in parliament in March this year, however the changes are yet to filter through.

The Bishop said the current rules are “archaic and unchanged since Victorian times, where children were seen as fathers’ property, and little consideration was given to mothers’ roles in raising children”.

The changes will make sure mothers’ names are also included on the marriage registration, not just for those weddings in the Church of England faith.

It is assumed the update will occur by early 2020 – around the same time as Beatrice’s wedding.
