Curtis Stone refuses to eat this one food on a plane

Curtis Stone is one of our biggest homegrown cooking talents, and since moving to LA he’s been globe-trotting around the world, creating a culinary empire that’s rivalling the likes of Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay. And when you spend so much time flying from country to country, there’s one thing that comes with it – airline food.

And while he may have a discerning palette when it comes to his restaurant, a recent interview with Escape suggests day-to-day Stone isn’t quite as much of a fussy eater.

“I eat what’s in front of me and that’s the truth!” Stone says. “People think that chefs are picky eaters, but we’re actually the opposite — we’re curious and eat all sorts of stuff.”

That said, there are some things Stone wouldn’t touch on a flight.

“I’d never eat anything like a lean cut of meat that should be grilled,” he reveals.

“Filet mignon, steak or a rack of lamb, for example. Once it’s cooked and reheated it ends up being too well done and dry. Saying that, I’d eat braised or stewed meat, such as curry or pot roast, which lends itself well to being reheated.

“I also don’t eat fish much either given the length of time and processing it needs to go through to be served in the air. And I never eat junk food — soft drinks included. It’s just a conscious decision.”

Stone also added meal quality varies greatly between airlines.

“It can be bad on certain airlines,” Stone said.

“Generally it’s the cheap ones where food isn’t a priority and where hundreds of portions have to be given out in a short space of time. But for a lot of airlines, it’s a key selling point and they do it well. I think airlines generally do a good job these days — it has improved a lot.

“Don’t get on there expecting to eat like you’re in a 5 star restaurant. Have reasonable expectations and don’t eat everything! Be choosy or you’ll feel crap.”

What are your thoughts? Are there any foods you refuse to eat on a plane?
