Bad news for travellers if you own this suitcase

They can charge your mobile phone, lock remotely, and even have GPS tracking – but these so-called smart suitcases may not be allowed to board the plane the next time you fly.

The suitcases are powered by lithium ion batteries, which are deemed a fire risk by the aviation industry.

Some US airlines have already outlined their new regulations, stating that if the smart suitcase’s battery can’t be removed before the flight, they won’t be placed in the cargo hold.

Following the US announcement, global airlines body, The International Air Transport Association (IATA), suggested that a new industry standard could soon be announced.

“We expect guidance to be issued potentially this week,” said IATA senior vice president of airport, passenger, cargo and security Nick Careen in Geneva at a recent media briefing.

According to the websites of two popular smart suitcase brands, Away and Raden, the battery can be removed. A third brand, BlueSmart, was unclear on their website as to whether the battery is removable.
