5 US cities every senior will love

Pack your bags! These US cities are perfect for senior travellers.

1. Miami, Florida

It’s a bit of a running joke that all seniors move to Florida, but the state’s vibrant coastal hub is genuinely a fantastic destination. The weather is consistently excellent, there are some great beachfront resorts and the beautifully-preserved city centre is home to the largest collection of art deco architecture in the world. Add to that the distinct Latin vibe from nearby Cuba and the Caribbean, and you’re going to fall in love.

2. Sedona, Arizona

Think of Sedona as the adventure capital for seniors. It’s surrounded by geological wonders and is the closest gateway to the Grand Canyon, making for excellent walks, hikes, bike rides and drives. The town itself is compact and flat, making it great for getting around on foot, yet has enough tourists that you’ll find a good selection of restaurants and shops. It’s also a centre for spiritual experiences and wellbeing, so you can really recharge your batteries.

3. Savannah, Georgia

If you’ve ever wanted to live out your ‘Gone With the Wind’ fantasies, then Savannah is the place. A grand old town that moves at its own – decidedly sedate – pace, Savannah is the modern incarnation of the Old South. The bustling riverfront is easily walkable and lined with bars, restaurants, shops and more. The fascinating Historic District is filled with heritage buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries, set along cobblestone streets and dotted with shady green squares.

4. Branson, Missouri

A visit to this small town in the Ozark Mountains of southwest Missouri is like a step back into the classic Main Street USA. It prides itself on having a lot to offer senior travellers, from 50 theatres with live shows on every day (and tickets always under $50), charming 5- and 10-cent stores, and showboat cruises on old-fashioned paddlesteamers. Yes, it can be a little tacky, but learn to embrace it and you’re guaranteed to have a good time.

5. Washington DC

The nation’s capital manages to combine iconic landmarks, world-class museums and an up-and-coming food and wine scene in one budget-friendly package. It’s the place to tick off some of the places you’ve only ever seen on screen (think the Lincoln Memorial, the White House and the Washington Monument) with visits to small batch breweries and buzzing live music venues. And don’t miss a visit to the Smithsonian – there’s nothing in the world like it.
