5 markets you must visit in Australia

Food, clothes, crafts and the best local produce – everyone loves a market.

Mindil Beach Sunset Markets, Darwin

A true Top End experience that’s not to be missed. The Mindil Beach Markets are held every Thursday night from May to October and serve up a great selection of local arts and crafts, clothing, jewellery and more, as well as delicious food from around the world. Bring a blanket and set up camp on the beach, eating your fill of sizzling satay, gado-gado or crocodile burgers.

Eveleigh Market, Sydney

Every Saturday, you’ll find Sydney’s best eats under the one roof in Eveleigh, close to Redfern in the city centre. The teams from Bourke Street Bakery, Sonomo and Billy Kwong are there every week, and you might even see celebrity chef Kylie Kwong serving up her signature dumplings. There’s also a great farmers market with regional cheese, meats, produce and wine.

Queen Victoria Market, Melbourne

Covering more than 17 acres, the Queen Vic is the largest open-air market in the Southern Hemisphere. As well as a huge selection of fresh produce, you can find lots of souvenirs, clothes, jewellery and homewares at stalls in the historic sheds. To get the full experience, you can even join a guided tour. In summer, the fun continues after dark with the buzzing Night Market held every Wednesday.

Fremantle Market, Perth

This bustling indoor market first opened in 1897 and still retains its distinctive Old World atmosphere. The markets run from Friday to Sunday every week and is bursting with fresh fruit and veg, fashion, homewares, toys and more. There are also special events held most weekends, like native petting zoos with animals from West Oz Wildlife or traditional Welcome to Country ceremonies from local Nyungar elders.

Barossa Farmers Market, South Australia

Food doesn’t get fresher or more local than that you’ll find at the Barossa Farmers Market – most of the producers come from less than 15 kilometres away. There are more than 50 stalls selling seasonal fruit and vegetables, bread, ethically produced meat and eggs, milk, cheese, nuts, olive oil and tea. Many of them are serving up organic or chemical free products and the farmers are on hand to discuss their produce with you.
