Why walk when you can cruise? Venice is a city of canals and bridges, so even a simple trip across the city becomes a romantic boat trip. The narrow laneways are perfect for wandering hand in hand and you’ll be able to find your own special spot to share a pizza (or hot chocolate or gelato or bottle of wine). And when the sunset hits the stone roofs, the whole city seems to glow with love.

Taipei, Taiwan
Asian metropolises can be overwhelming, but Taipei will make female travellers on their own feel welcome. Most signage is in English, so you will have no trouble getting around, and crime is almost non-existent. At night, the metro system has a special ‘safe waiting zone’ marked on the platform that are monitored by security cameras. You also won’t feel out of place on your own – night markets and street stalls are filled with solo diners tucking into dumplings and noodle soups.

Edinburgh, Scotland
Edinburgh has been the capital of Scotland since the 15th century and the Old Town is one of the world’s best preserved medieval cities. The neoclassical New Town, built from the 18th century, is just as fascinating. First stop must be Edinburgh Castle, towering over the city from its clifftop position, then head for the Palace of Holyrood House, St Giles Catherdral, Greyfriars Kirkyard and Rosslyn Chapel.

Tokyo, Japan.
The Japanese capital is the undisputed fine dining capital of the world with more Michelin stars than any other city. Many of its best restaurants are tiny, hole in the walls secrets with just a few seats and no printed menu. But if that’s out of your budget, the food is great everywhere from convenience stores (seriously) to buzzing street stalls and casual izakaya pubs.

Los Angeles, USA
It makes sense that the city known for its celebrities and beautiful people would take health seriously. You can get a green juice or acai bowl on every corner, there are plenty of yoga studios or spin classes to attend, or you can just soak up the sunshine and make the most of the outdoor lifestyle.
