6 best art attractions in Australia

Get some culture at these world-class attractions.

1. MONA, Hobart

The Museum of Old and New Art is truly one of a kind. The largest privately owned museum in the country is run by professional gambler and all round interesting fellow David Walsh. Dramatically cut into a hillside just outside of Hobart, you’ll find fascinating interactive sculptures, spooky artworks and whole rooms dedicated to death or sex. Stick around for a drink at the on-site winery.

2. White Rabbit Gallery, Sydney

Tucked away in an unassuming backstreet in Chippendale, close to Central Station, White Rabbit Gallery houses one of the world’s most significant collections of modern Chinese art. Spread across four floors and with works from more than 35 artists on display at a time, you’ll find everything from photography and illustration to sculpture, painting, video art and large scale installations inside.

3. Melbourne Street Art Tours

Who says art has to be inside a gallery? Melbourne is famous for its street art with spray painting, paste ups and stencil art adorning walls all across the city. The tours are run by local artists who are involved in the scene, so you’ll get a genuine insight into the social and political issues behind the art.

4. GOMA, Brisbane

If you’re one of those people who dismiss art as ‘not for you’, then Queensland’s Gallery of Modern Art might just change your mind. Recent exhibitions include a show dedicated to the Marvel comic superheroes, a Valentino retrospective and a festival of Italian horror films. When you’ve had your fill of culture, you can dine at the two-hatted GOMA restaurant which blends art and gastronomy.

5. Burrup Peninsula, Western Australia

Art is one of the most ancient forms of expression and communication. Aboriginal rock art sites on the Burrup Peninsula, an island in the Dampier Archipelago of WA’s remote Pilbara region, date back some 20,000 years, making them some of the oldest surviving examples in the world. There are more than one million separate pieces of art, carved directly into rock, and showing native wildlife and extinct megafauna
